In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems governed by semilinear elliptic variational inequalities involving constraints on the state, and more precisely the obstacle problem. Since we adopt a numerical point of view, we first relax the feasible domain of the problem, then using both mathematical programming methods and penalization methods we get optimality conditions with smooth Lagrange multipliers. Some numerical experiments using IPOPT algorithm are presented to verify the efficiency of our approach.
The present contribution investigates shape optimisation problems for a class of semilinear elliptic variational inequalities with Neumann boundary conditions. Sensitivity estimates and material derivatives are firstly derived in an abstract operator setting where the operators are defined on polyhedral subsets of reflexive Banach spaces. The results are then refined for variational inequalities arising from minimisation problems for certain convex energy functionals considered over upper obstacle sets in $H^1$. One particularity is that we allow for dynamic obstacle functions which may arise …
We consider optimal control of fractional in time (subdiffusive, i.e., for $% 0<γ<1$) semilinear parabolic PDEs associated with various notions of diffusion operators in an unifying fashion. Under general assumptions on the nonlinearity we{~\textsf{first show}} the existence and regularity of solutions to the forward and the associated {\textsf{backward (adjoint)}} problems. In the second part, we prove existence of optimal {\textsf{controls% }} and characterize the associated {\textsf{first order}} optimality conditions. Several examples involving fractional in time (and some fractional in sp…
This paper studies a system of $m$ variational inequalities with interconnected obstacles in infinite horizon associated to optimal multi-modes switching problems. Our main result is the existence and uniqueness of a continuous solution in viscosity sense, for that system. The proof of the main result strongly relies on the connection between the systems of variational inequalities and reflected backward stochastic differential equations (RBSDEs) with oblique reflection, which will be characterized through a Feynman-Kac's formula. The main feature of our system of infinite horizon RBSDEs is th…
We propose an approximation scheme for a class of semilinear variational inequalities whose Hamiltonian is convex and coercive. The proposed scheme is a natural extension of a previous splitting scheme proposed by Liang, Zariphopoulou and the author for semilinear parabolic PDEs. We establish the convergence of the scheme and determine the convergence rate by obtaining its error bounds. The bounds are obtained by Krylov's shaking coefficients technique and Barles-Jakobsen's optimal switching approximation, in which a key step is to introduce a variant switching system.
This paper is concerned with the sensitivity analysis of a class of parameterized fixed-point problems that arise in the context of obstacle-type quasi-variational inequalities. We prove that, if the operators in the considered fixed-point equation satisfy a positive superhomogeneity condition, then the maximal and minimal element of the solution set of the problem depend locally Lipschitz continuously on the involved parameters. We further show that, if certain concavity conditions hold, then the maximal solution mapping is Hadamard directionally differentiable and its directional derivatives…
The directional differentiability of the solution map of obstacle type quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs) with respect to perturbations on the forcing term is studied. The classical result of Mignot is then extended to the quasi-variational case under assumptions that allow multiple solutions of the QVI. The proof involves selection procedures for the solution set and represents the directional derivative as the limit of a monotonic sequence of directional derivatives associated to specific variational inequalities. Additionally, estimates on the coincidence set and several simplifications …
We study parabolic quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs) of obstacle type. Under appropriate assumptions on the obstacle mapping, we prove the existence of solutions of such QVIs by two methods: one by time discretisation through elliptic QVIs and the second by iteration through parabolic variational inequalities (VIs). Using these results, we show the directional differentiability (in a certain sense) of the solution map which takes the source term of a parabolic QVI into the set of solutions, and we relate this result to the contingent derivative of the aforementioned map. We finish with an …
In this paper we consider feedback stabilization for parabolic variational inequalities of obstacle type with time and space depending reaction and convection coefficients and show exponential stabilization to nonstationary trajectories. Based on a Moreau-Yosida approximation, a feedback operator is established using a finite (and uniform in the approximation index) number of actuators leading to exponential decay of given rate of the state variable. Several numerical examples are presented addressing smooth and nonsmooth obstacle functions.
This paper treats a distributed optimal control problem for a tumor growth model of Cahn-Hilliard type including chemotaxis. The evolution of the tumor fraction is governed by a variational inequality corresponding to a double obstacle nonlinearity occurring in the associated potential. In addition, the control and state variables are nonlinearly coupled and, furthermore, the cost functional contains a nondifferentiable term like the $L^1$-norm in order to include sparsity effects which is of utmost relevance, especially time sparsity, in the context of cancer therapies as applying a control t…
We employ the proximal averaged Newton-type method for optimal control (PANOC) to solve obstacle avoidance problems in real time. We introduce a novel modeling framework for obstacle avoidance which allows us to easily account for generic, possibly nonconvex, obstacles involving polytopes, ellipsoids, semialgebraic sets and generic sets described by a set of nonlinear inequalities. PANOC is particularly well-suited for embedded applications as it involves simple steps, its implementation comes with a low memory footprint and its fast convergence meets the tight runtime requirements of fast dyn…
In general, standard necessary optimality conditions cannot be formulated in a straightforward manner for semi-smooth shape optimization problems. In this paper, we consider shape optimization problems constrained by variational inequalities of the first kind, so-called obstacle-type problems. Under appropriate assumptions, we prove existence of adjoints for regularized problems and convergence to limiting objects of the unregularized problem. Moreover, we derive existence and closed form of shape derivatives for the regularized problem and prove convergence to a limit object. Based on this an…
We prove the Lewy-Stampacchia inequalities for the two obstacles problem in abstract form for T-monotone operators. As a consequence for a general class of quasi-linear elliptic operators of Ladyzhenskaya-Uraltseva type, including p(x)-Laplacian type operators, we derive new results of $C^{1,α}$ regularity for the solution. We also apply those inequalities to obtain new results to the N-membranes problem and the regularity and monotonicity properties to obtain the existence of a solution to a quasi-variational problem in (generalized) Orlicz-Sobolev spaces.
We focus on elliptic quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs) of obstacle type and prove a number of results on the existence of solutions, directional differentiability and optimal control of such QVIs. We give three existence theorems based on an order approach, an iteration scheme and a sequential regularisation through partial differential equations. We show that the solution map taking the source term into the set of solutions of the QVI is directionally differentiable for general data and locally Hadamard differentiable obstacle mappings, thereby extending in particular the results of our p…
We consider the semilinear parabolic equation of normal type connected with the 3D Helmholtz equation with periodic boundary condition. The problem of stabilization to zero of the solution for normal parabolic equation with arbitrary initial condition by starting control is studied. This problem is reduced to establishing three inequalities connected with starting control, one of which has been proved previously. The proof for the other two is given here.
In this note, we prove that the minimal and maximal solution maps associated to elliptic quasi-variational inequalities of obstacle type are directionally differentiable with respect to the forcing term and for directions that are signed. Along the way, we show that the minimal and maximal solutions can be seen as monotone limits of solutions of certain variational inequalities and that the aforementioned directional derivatives can also be characterised as the monotone limits of sequences of directional derivatives associated to variational inequalities. We conclude the paper with some exampl…
For a class of quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs) of obstacle-type the stability of its solution set and associated optimal control problems are considered. These optimal control problems are non-standard in the sense that they involve an objective with set-valued arguments. The approach to study the solution stability is based on perturbations of minimal and maximal elements of the solution set of the QVI with respect to {monotone} perturbations of the forcing term. It is shown that different assumptions are required for studying decreasing and increasing perturbations and that the optimiz…
In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems for Allen-Cahn variational inequalities with a dynamic boundary condition involving double obstacle potentials and the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The approach covers both the cases of distributed controls and of boundary controls. The cost functional is of standard tracking type, and box constraints for the controls are prescribed. We prove existence of optimal controls and derive first-order necessary conditions of optimality. The general strategy is the following: we use the results that were recently established by two of the authors fo…
The purpose of this paper is three-fold. Firstly we attack a nonlinear interface problem on an unbounded domain with nonmonotone set-valued transmission conditions. The investigated problem involves a nonlinear monotone partial differential equation in the interior domain and the Laplacian in the exterior domain. Such a scalar interface problem models nonmonotone frictional contact of elastic infinite media. The variational formulation of the interface problem leads to a hemivariational inequality (HVI), which however lives on the unbounded domain, and thus cannot analyzed in a reflexive Banac…
We present a novel penalty approach for a class of quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs) involving monotone systems and interconnected obstacles. We show that for any given positive switching cost, the solutions of the penalized equations converge monotonically to those of the QVIs. We estimate the penalization errors and are able to deduce that the optimal switching regions are constructed exactly. We further demonstrate that as the switching cost tends to zero, the QVI degenerates into an equation of HJB type, which is approximated by the penalized equation at the same order (up to a log fac…
