We show that finite-type surfaces are characterized by a topological analog of the Hopf property. Namely, an oriented surface $Σ$ is of finite-type if and only if every proper map $f\colonΣ\to Σ$ of degree one is homotopic to a homeomorphism.
Let g and n be integers at least two, and let G be the pure braid group with n strands on a closed orientable surface of genus g. We describe any injective homomorphism from a finite index subgroup of G into G. As a consequence, we show that any finite index subgroup of G is co-Hopfian.
We study injective homomorphisms between big mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces. First, we construct (uncountably many) examples of surfaces without boundary whose (pure) mapping class groups are not co-Hopfian; these are the first examples of injective endomorphisms of mapping class groups (of surfaces with empty boundary) that fail to be surjective. We then prove that, subject to some topological conditions on the domain surface, any continuous injective homomorphism between (arbitrary) big mapping class groups that sends Dehn twists to Dehn twists is induced by homeomorphism. Fi…
For all but finitely many compact orientable surfaces, we show that any superinjective map from the complex of separating curves into itself is induced by an element of the extended mapping class group. We apply this result to proving that any finite index subgroup of the Johnson kernel is co-Hopfian. Analogous properties are shown for the Torelli complex and the Torelli group.
Let S be a connected, compact and orientable surface of genus two having exactly one boundary component. We study automorphisms of the Torelli complex for S, and describe any isomorphism between finite index subgroups of the Torelli group for S. More generally, we study superinjective maps from the Torelli complex for S into itself, and show that any finite index subgroup of the Torelli group for S is co-Hopfian.
Let $Σ_{\infty, 1}$ be the inductive limit of compact oriented surfaces with one boundary component. We prove the center of the Goldman Lie algebra of the surface $Σ_{\infty,1}$ is spanned by the constant loop. A similar statement for a closed oriented surface was conjectured by Chas and Sullivan, and proved by Etingof. Our result is deduced from a computation of the center of the Lie algebra of oriented chord diagrams.
We define and study analogs of curve graphs for infinite type surfaces. Our definitions use the geometry of a fixed surface and vertices of our graphs are infinite multicurves which are bounded in both a geometric and a topological sense. We show that the graphs we construct are generally connected, infinite diameter and infinite rank.
We show that a knot in $S^3$ with an infinite number of distinct incompressible Seifert surfaces contains a closed incompressible surface in its complement.
The random graph is an infinite graph with the universal property that any embedding of $G-v$ extends to an embedding of $G$, for any finite graph. In this paper we show that this graph embeds in the curve graph of a surface $Σ$ if and only if $Σ$ has infinite genus, showing that the curve system on an infinite genus surface is "as complicated as possible".
We show that the length spectrum metric on Teichmüller spaces of surfaces of infinite topological type is complete. We also give related results and examples that compare the length spectrum Teichmüller space with quasiconformal and the Fenchel-Nielsen Teichmüller spaces on such surfaces
We show that every countable subgroup $G<\rm GL_+(2,\mathbb{R})$ without contracting elements is the Veech group of a tame translation surface $S$ of infinite genus, for infinitely many different topological types of $S$. Moreover, we prove that as long as every end has genus, there are no restrictions on the topological type of $S$ to realise all possible uncountable Veech groups.
We study arc graphs and curve graphs for surfaces of infinite topological type. First, we define an arc graph relative to a finite number of (isolated) punctures and prove that it is a connected, uniformly hyperbolic graph of infinite diameter; this extends a recent result of J. Bavard to a large class of punctured surfaces. Second, we study the subgraph of the curve graph spanned by those elements which intersect a fixed separating curve on the surface. We show that this graph has infinite diameter and geometric rank 3, and thus is not hyperbolic.
Let $X_{0}$ be a complete hyperbolic surface of infinite type with geodesic boundary which admits a countable pair of pants decomposition. As an application of the Basmajian identity for complete bordered hyperbolic surfaces of infinite type with limit sets of 1-dimensional measure zero, we define an asymmetric metric (which is called arc metric) on the quasiconformal Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}(X_{0})$ provided that $X_{0}$ satisfies a geometric condition. Furthermore, we construct several examples of hyperbolic surfaces of infinite type satisfying the geometric condition and discuss the r…
Let $ϕ:\mathcal{C}(S)\to\mathcal{C}(S')$ be a simplicial isomorphism between the curve graphs of two infinite-type surfaces. In this paper we show that in this situation $S$ and $S'$ are homeomorphic and $ϕ$ is induced by a homeomorphism $h:S\to S'$.
For any finite type connected surface $S$, we give an infinite presentation of the fundamental group $π_1(S,\ast)$ of $S$ based at an interior point $\ast\in{S}$ whose generators are represented by simple loops. When $S$ is non-orientable, we also give an infinite presentation of the subgroup of $π_1(S,\ast)$ generated by elements which are represented by simple loops whose regular neighborhoods are annuli.
We prove that for any infinite-type orientable surface S there exists a collection of essential curves Γ in S such that any homeomorphism that preserves the isotopy classes of the elements of Γ is isotopic to the identity. The collection Γ is countable and has infinite complement in C(S), the curve complex of S. As a consequence we obtain that the natural action of the extended mapping class group of S on C(S) is faithful.
We answer two questions about the topology of end spaces of infinite type surfaces and the action of the mapping class group that have appeared in the literature. First, we give examples of infinite type surfaces with end spaces that are not self-similar, but a unique maximal type of end, either a singleton or Cantor set. Secondly, we use an argument of Tsankov to show that the "local complexity" relation $\preccurlyeq$ on end types gives an equivalence relation that agrees with the notion of being locally homeomorphic.
After Fossas-Parlier, we consider two graphs $\mathcal{G}_{0}(S)$ and $\mathcal{G}_{\infty}(S)$, constructed from multicurves on connected, orientable surfaces of infinite-type. Our first result asserts that $\mathcal{G}_{\infty}(S)$ has finite diameter, which extends a result of Fossas-Parlier. Next, we prove that the group of (label-preserving) automorphisms of $\mathcal{G}_{0}(S)$ is the extended mapping class group of $S$, which may be regarded as an infinite-type analog of a theorem of Margalit about pants complexes.
We generalise surface cluster algebras to the case of infinite surfaces where the surface contains finitely many accumulation points of boundary marked points. To connect different triangulations of an infinite surface, we consider infinite mutation sequences. We show transitivity of infinite mutation sequences on triangulations of an infinite surface and examine different types of mutation sequences. Moreover, we use a hyperbolic structure on an infinite surface to extend the notion of surface cluster algebras to infinite rank by giving cluster variables as lambda lengths of arcs. Furthermore…
Consider a connected orientable surface $S$ of infinite topological type, i.e. with infinitely-generated fundamental group. We describe the large-scale geometry of arbitrary connected subgraphs of the arc complex $A(S)$ and curve complex $C(S)$ of $S$, provided they are invariant under a sufficiently big subgroup of the mapping class group $Mod(S)$. We obtain a number of consequences; in particular we recover the main results of J. Bavard and Aramayona-Fossas-Parlier .
Let S be any orientable surface of infinite genus with a finite number of boundary components. In this work we consider the curve complex C(S), the nonseparating curve complex N(S) and the Schmutz graph G(S) of S. When all the topological ends of S carry genus, we show that all elements in the automorphism groups Aut(C(S)), Aut(N(S)) and Aut(G(S)) are geometric, i.e. these groups are naturally isomorphic to the extended mapping class group MCG*(S) of the infinite surface S. Finally, we study rigidity phenomena within Aut(C(S)) and Aut(N(S))
In this paper we present in a topological way the construction of the orientable surface with only one end and infinite genus, called \emph{The Infinite Loch Ness Monster}. In fact, we introduce a flat and hyperbolic construction of this surface. We discuss how the name of this surface has evolved and how it has been historically understood.
We show that any infinite-type surface without planar ends admits arbitrarily large families of length isospectral hyperbolic structures. If the surface has infinite genus and its space of ends is self-similar, we construct an uncountable family of isospectral and quasiconformally distinct hyperbolic structures.
The Alexander method is a combinatorial tool used to determine when two elements of the mapping class group are equal. We extend the Alexander method to include the case of infinite-type surfaces. Versions of the Alexander method was proven by Hernández--Morales--Valdez and Hernández--Hidber. As sample applications, we verify a relation in the mapping class group, show that the centers of many twist subgroups of the mapping class group are trivial, and provide a relatively smaller basis for the topology of the mapping class group.
We associate to triangulations of infinite type surface a type of flip graph where simultaneous flips are allowed. Our main focus is on understanding exactly when two triangulations can be related by a sequence of flips. A consequence of our results is that flip graphs for infinite type surfaces have uncountably many connected components.
A closed, orientable, splitting surface in an oriented $3$-manifold is a topologically minimal surface of index $n$ if its associated disk complex is $(n-2)$-connected but not $(n-1)$-connected. A critical surface is a topologically minimal surface of index $2$. In this paper, we use an equivalent combinatorial definition of critical surfaces to construct the first known critical bridge spheres for nontrivial links.
We study geodesics on a planar Riemann surface of infinite type having a single infinite end. Of particular interest is the class of geodesics that go out the infinite end in a most efficient manner. We investigate properties of these geodesics and relate them to the structure of the boundary of a Dirichlet polygon for a Fuchsian group representing the surface.
Starting with the Dolgachev surface E(1)_{2,3} we construct an infinite family of distinct exotic copies of the rational surface E(1), each of which admits a handlebody decomposition without 1- and 3- handles, and we draw these handlebodies.
We show that the extended based mapping class group of an infinite-type surface is naturally isomorphic to the automorphism group of the loop graph of that surface. Additionally, we show that the extended mapping class group stabilizing a finite set of punctures is isomorphic to the arc graph relative to that finite set of punctures. This extends a known result for sufficiently complex finite-type surfaces, and provides a new angle from which to study the mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces.
We give an infinite presentation for the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface. The generating set consists of all Dehn twists and all crosscap pushing maps along simple loops.
We give an infinite presentation for the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface with boundary components. The presentation is a generalization of the presentation given by the second author [15].
The Gauss-Bonnet formula for classical translation surfaces relates the cone angle of the singularities (geometry) to the genus of the surface (topology). When considering more general translation surfaces, we observe so-called wild singularities for which the notion of cone angle is not applicable any more. We study whether there still exist relations between the geometry and the topology for translation surfaces with wild singularities. By considering short saddle connections, we determine under which conditions the existence of a wild singularity implies infinite genus. We apply this to sho…
A finite presentation for the subgroup of the mapping class group of a compact non-orientable surface generated by all Dehn twists was given by Stukow. In this paper, we give an infinite presentation for this group, mainly using the presentation given by Stukow and Birman exact sequences on mapping class groups of non-orientable surfaces.
We consider a planar surface Σof infinite type which has the Thompson group T as asymptotic mapping class group. We construct the asymptotic pants complex C of Σand prove that the group T acts transitively by automorphisms on it. Finally, we establish that the automorphism group of the complex C is an extension of the Thompson group T by Z/2Z.
We prove a partial generalization of Bonahon's tameness result to surfaces inside irreducible 3-manifolds with hyperbolic fundamental group. Bonahon's result states that geometrically infinite ends of freely indecomposable hyperbolic 3-manifolds are simply degenerate. It is easy to see that a geometrically infinite end gives rise to a sequence of curves on the corresponding surface whose geodesic representatives are not contained in any compact set. The main step in his proof is showing that one may assume that these curves are simple on the surface. In this paper, we generalize the main step …

We give a new proof of a theorem of D. Calegari that says that the Cayley graph of a surface group with respect to any generating set lying in finitely many mapping class group orbits has infinite diameter. This applies, for instance, to the generating set consisting of all simple closed curves.
We show that any surface of infinite type admits an ideal triangulation. Furthermore, we show that a set of disjoint arcs can be completed into a triangulation if and only if, as a set, they intersect every simple closed curve a finite number of times.
Unlike the case of surfaces of topologically finite type, there are several different Teichmüller spaces that are associated to a surface of topological infinite type. These Teichmüller spaces first depend (set-theoretically) on whether we work in the hyperbolic category or in the conformal category. They also depend, given the choice of a point of view (hyperbolic or conformal), on the choice of a distance function on Teichmüller space. Examples of distance functions that appear naturally in the hyperbolic setting are the length spectrum distance and the bi-Lipschitz distance, and there are o…
We study the pants complex of surfaces of infinite type. When $S$ is a surface of infinite type, the usual definition of the pants graph $\mathcal{P}(S)$ yields a graph with infinitely many connected-components. In the first part of our paper, we study this disconnected graph. In particular, we show that the extended mapping class group $\mathrm{Mod}(S)$ is isomorphic to a proper subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{P})$, in contrast to the finite-type case where $\mathrm{Mod}(S)\cong \mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{P}(S))$. In the second part of the paper, motivated by the Metaconjecture of Ivanov, we se…
In this work we compute the first integral cohomology of the pure mapping class group of a non-orientable surface of infinite topological type and genus at least 3. To this purpose, we also prove several other results already known for orientable surfaces such as the existence of an Alexander method, the fact that the mapping class group is isomorphic to the automorphism group of the curve graph along with the topological rigidity of the curve graph, and the structure of the pure mapping class group as both a Polish group and a semi-direct product.
The loop graph of an infinite type surface is an infinite diameter hyperbolic graph first studied in detail by Juliette Bavard. An important open problem in the study of infinite type surfaces is to describe the boundary of the loop graph as a space of geodesic laminations. We approach this problem by constructing the first examples of 2-filling rays on infinite type surfaces. Such rays accumulate onto geodesic laminations which are in some sense filling, but without strong enough properties to correspond to points in the boundary of the loop graph. We give multiple constructions using both a …
