In an orientation $O$ of the graph $G$, the edge $e$ is deletable if and only if $O-e$ is strongly connected. For a $3$-edge-connected graph $G$, Hörsch and Szigeti defined the Frank number as the minimum $k$ for which $G$ admits $k$ orientations such that every edge $e$ of $G$ is deletable in at least one of the $k$ orientations. They conjectured the Frank number is at most $3$ for every $3$-edge-connected graph $G$. They proved the Petersen graph has Frank number $3$, but this was the only example with this property. We show an infinite class of graphs having Frank number $3$. Hörsch and Szigeti showed every $3$-edge-colorable $3$-edge-connected graph has Frank number at most $3$. It is tempting to consider non-$3$-edge-colorable graphs as candidates for having Frank number greater than $2$. Snarks are sometimes a good source of finding critical examples or counterexamples. One might suspect various snarks should have Frank number $3$. However, we prove several candidate infinite classes of snarks have Frank number $2$. As well as the generalized Petersen Graphs $GP(2s+1,s)$. We formulate numerous conjectures inspired by our experience.
A 3-graph $\mathcal{F}$ is \emph{$U(s, 2s+1)$} if for any $s$ edges $e_1,...,e_s\in E(\mathcal{F})$, $|e_1\cup...\cup e_s|\leq 2s+1$. Frankl and Kupavskii (2020) proposed the following conjecture: For any $3$-graph $\mathcal{F}$ with $n$ vertices, if $\mathcal{F}$ is $U(s, 2s+1)$, then $$e(\mathcal{F})\leq \max\left\{{n-1\choose 2}, (n-s-1){s+1\choose 2}+{s+1\choose 3}, {2s+1\choose 3}\right\}.$$ In this paper, we confirm Frankl and Kupavskii's conjecture.
The Lagrangian of a hypergraph has been a useful tool in hypergraph extremal problems. In most applications, we need an upper bound for the Lagrangian of a hypergraph. Frankl and Furedi in \cite{FF} conjectured that the $r$-graph with $m$ edges formed by taking the first $m$ sets in the colex ordering of ${\mathbb N}^{(r)}$ has the largest Lagrangian of all $r$-graphs with $m$ edges. In this paper, we give some partial results for this conjecture.
In 1965, Motzkin and Straus [5] provided a new proof of Turan's theorem based on a continuous characterization of the clique number of a graph using the Lagrangian of a graph. This new proof aroused interests in the study of Lagrangians of r-uniform graphs. The Lagrangian of a hypergraph has been a useful tool in hypergraph extremal problems. Sidorenko and Frankl-Furedi applied Lagrangians of hypergraphs in finding Turan densities of hypergraphs. Frankl and Rodl applied it in disproving Erdos' jumping constant conjecture. In most applications, we need an upper bound for the Lagrangian of a hyp…
Frankl's union-closed sets conjecture states that in every finite union-closed set of sets, there is an element that is contained in at least half of the member-sets (provided there are at least two members). The conjecture has an equivalent formulation in terms of graphs: In every bipartite graph with least one edge, both colour classes contain a vertex belonging to at most half of the maximal stable sets. We prove that, for every fixed edge-probability, almost every random bipartite graph almost satisfies Frankl's conjecture.
We disprove a conjecture of Frank stating that each weakly 2k-connected has a k-vertex-connected orientation. For k at least 3, we also prove that the problem of deciding whether a graph has a k-vertex-connected orientation is NP-complete.
Frankl and Füredi (1989) conjectured that the $r$-graph with $m$ edges formed by taking the first $m$ sets in the colex ordering of ${\mathbb N}^{(r)}$ has the largest graph-Lagrangian of all $r$-graphs with $m$ edges. In this paper, we establish some bounds for graph-Lagrangians of some special $r$-graphs that support this conjecture.
For a set of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, let $\ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ and $\spex(n,\mathcal{F})$ denote the maximum number of edges and the maximum spectral radius of an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}$-free graph, respectively. Nikiforov ({\em LAA}, 2007) gave the spectral version of the Turán Theorem by showing that $\spex(n, K_{k+1})=λ(T_{k}(n))$, where $T_k(n)$ is the $k$-partite Turán graph on $n$ vertices. In the same year, Feng, Yu and Zhang ({\em LAA}) determined the exact value of $\spex(n, M_{s+1})$, where $M_{s+1}$ is a matching with $s+1$ edges. Recently, Alon and Frankl~(arXiv2210.15076) gave the e…
We attempt to generalize a theorem of Nash-Williams stating that a graph has a $k$-arc-connected orientation if and only if it is $2k$-edge-connected. In a strongly connected digraph we call an arc {\it deletable} if its deletion leaves a strongly connected digraph. Given a $3$-edge-connected graph $G$, we define its Frank number $f(G)$ to be the minimum number $k$ such that there exist $k$ orientations of $G$ with the property that every edge becomes a deletable arc in at least one of these orientations. We are interested in finding a good upper bound for the Frank number. We prove that $f(G)…
In this note, extending some results of Erdos, Frankl, Rodl, Alexeev, Bollobas and Thomason we determine asymptotically the number of graphs which do not contain certain large subgraphs. In particular, if H_1,...,H_n,... are graphs with chromatic numbers r_1,...,r_n,... and order o(log n), we dermine asymptotically the number of graphs of order n not containing H_n as a subgraph. We also give similar results for induced subgraphs.
We determine the independence number of the orthogonality graph on $2^k$-dimensional hypercubes. This answers a question by Galliard from 2001 which is motivated by a problem in quantum information theory. Our method is a modification of a rank argument due to Frankl who showed the analogous result for $4p^k$-dimensional hypercubes, where $p$ is an odd prime.
The generalized Turán number $ex(n,K_s,H)$ is the maximum number of complete graph $K_s$ in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Let $F_k$ be the friendship graph consisting of $k$ triangles. Erdős and Sós (1976) determined the value of $ex(n,K_3,F_2)$. Alon and Shikhelman (2016) proved that $ex(n,K_3, F_k)\le (9k-15)(k+1)n.$ In this paper, by using a method developed by Chung and Frankl in hypergraph theory, we determine the exact value of $ex(n,K_3,F_k)$ and the extremal graph for any $F_k$ when $n\ge 4k^3$.
Let $χ_Δ(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ denote the minimum number of colors needed to color $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ so that there will not be a monochromatic equilateral triangle with side length $1$. Using the slice rank method, we reprove a result of Frankl and Rodl, and show that $χ_Δ\left(\mathbb{R}^{n}\right)$ grows exponentially with $n$. This technique substantially improves upon the best known quantitative lower bounds for $χ_Δ\left(\mathbb{R}^{n}\right)$, and we obtain \[ χ_Δ\left(\mathbb{R}^{n}\right)>(1.01446+o(1))^{n}. \]
For a graph property $\mathcal{P}$ and a common vertex set $V = \{1, 2, \ldots, n\}$, a family of graphs on $V$ is \emph{$\mathcal{P}$-intersecting} iff $G \cap H$ satisfies $\mathcal{P}$ for all $G,H$ in the family. Addressing a question of Chung, Graham, Frankl, and Shearer, we explore---for various $\mathcal{P}$---the maximum cardinality among all $\mathcal{P}$-intersecting families of graphs. In the connected-intersecting case, we resolve the question completely by a short linear algebraic proof showing this maximum is attained by taking all graphs containing a fixed spanning tree (though …
In a recent paper, Frank Ruskey asked whether every linear recurrent sequence can occur in some solution of a meta-Fibonacci sequence. In this paper, we answer his question in the affirmative for recurrences with positive coefficients.
A graph G is called (2k, k)-connected if G is 2k-edge-connected and G-v is k-edge-connected for every vertex v. The study of (2k, k)-connected graphs is motivated by a conjecture of Frank which states that a graph has a 2-vertex-connected orientation if and only if it is (4, 2)-connected. In this paper, we provide a construction of the family of (2k, k)-connected graphs for k even which generalizes the construction given by Jordán for k = 2. We also solve the corresponding connectivity augmentation problem: given a graph G and an integer k \geq 2, what is the minimum number of edges to be adde…
Answering several questions of Duffus, Frankl and Rödl, we give asymptotics for the logarithms of (i) the number of maximal antichains in the n-dimensional Boolean algebra and (ii) the numbers of maximal independent sets in the covering graph of the n-dimensional hypercube and certain natural subgraphs thereof. The results in (ii) are implied by more general upper bounds on the numbers of maximal independent sets in regular and biregular graphs. We also mention some stronger possibilities involving actual rather than logarithmic asymptotics.
We say that $k$ graphs $G_1,G_2,\dots,G_k$ on a common vertex set of size $n$ contain a rainbow copy of a graph $H$ if their union contains a copy of $H$ with each edge belonging to a distinct $G_i$. We provide a counterexample to a conjecture of Frankl on the maximum product of the sizes of the edge sets of three graphs avoiding a rainbow triangle. We propose an alternative conjecture, which we prove under the additional assumption that the union of the three graphs is complete. Furthermore, we determine the maximum product of the sizes of the edge sets of three graphs or four graphs avoiding…
As an application of Szemeredi's regularity lemma, Erdos-Frankl-Rodl (1986) showed that the number of graphs on vertex set {1,2,...n} with a monotone class P is $2^{(1+o(1))ex(n,P)n^2/2}$ where $ex(n,P)$ is the maximum number of edges of an n-vertex graph which has no subgraph in P. Kohayakawa et al. (2003) extended it from monotone to hereditary and from graphs to 3-uniform hypergraphs. We extend it to general hypergraphs. This may be a simple example illustrating how to apply a recent hypergraph regularity lemma by the author.
Let r >= s >= 0 be integers and G be an r-graph. The higher inclusion matrix M_s^r(G) is a {0,1}-matrix with rows indexed by the edges of G and columns indexed by the subsets of V(G) of size s: the entry corresponding to an edge e and a subset S is 1 if S is contained in e and 0 otherwise. Following a question of Frankl and Tokushige and a result of Keevash, we define the rank-extremal function rex(n,t,r,s) as the maximum number of edges of an r-graph G having rank M_s^r(G) <=\binom{n}{s} - t. For t at most linear in n we determine this function as well as the extremal r-graphs. The special ca…
In 1976 Frank and Gy{á}rf{á}s gave a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an orientation in an arbitrary graph $G$ such that for each vertex $v$, the out-degree $d^+_G(v)$ of it satisfies $p(v)\le d^+_G(v)\le q(v)$, where $p$ and $q$ are two integer-valued functions on $V(G)$ with $p\le q$. In this paper, we give a sufficient edge-connectivity condition for the existence of an orientation in $G$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d^+_G(v)\in \{p(v),q(v)\}$, provided that for each vertex $v$, $p(v)\le \frac{1}{2}d_G(v) \le q(v)$, $|q(v)-p(v)|\le k$, and there is $t(v)\in \{p(v),…
Nash-Williams proved that every graph has a well-balanced orientation. A key ingredient in his proof is admissible odd-vertex pairings. We show that for two slightly different definitions of admissible odd-vertex pairings, deciding whether a given odd-vertex pairing is admissible is co-NP-complete. This resolves a question of Frank. We also show that deciding whether a given graph has an orientation that satisfies arbitrary local arc-connectivity requirements is NP-complete.
The $k$-th $p$-power of a graph $G$ is the graph on the vertex set $V(G)^k$, where two $k$-tuples are adjacent iff the number of their coordinates which are adjacent in $G$ is not congruent to 0 modulo $p$. The clique number of powers of $G$ is poly-logarithmic in the number of vertices, thus graphs with small independence numbers in their $p$-powers do not contain large homogenous subsets. We provide algebraic upper bounds for the asymptotic behavior of independence numbers of such powers, settling a conjecture of Alon and Lubetzky up to a factor of 2. For precise bounds on some graphs, we ap…
A central problem in extremal graph theory is to estimate, for a given graph $H$, the number of $H$-free graphs on a given set of $n$ vertices. In the case when $H$ is not bipartite, fairly precise estimates on this number are known. In particular, thirty years ago, Erdős, Frankl, and Rödl proved that there are $2^{(1+o(1))\text{ex}(n,H)}$ such graphs. In the bipartite case, however, nontrivial bounds have been proven only for relatively few special graphs $H$. We make a first attempt at addressing this enumeration problem for a general bipartite graph $H$. We show that an upper bound of $2^{O…
Given a finite simple graph $G$, an odd cover of $G$ is a collection of complete bipartite graphs, or bicliques, in which each edge of $G$ appears in an odd number of bicliques and each non-edge of $G$ appears in an even number of bicliques. We denote the minimum cardinality of an odd cover of $G$ by $b_2(G)$ and prove that $b_2(G)$ is bounded below by half of the rank over $\mathbb{F}_2$ of the adjacency matrix of $G$. We show that this lower bound is tight in the case when $G$ is a bipartite graph and almost tight when $G$ is an odd cycle. However, we also present an infinite family of graph…
For a pair $(H_1,H_2)$ of graphs, Lovász introduced a polytopal complex called the Hom complex $\text{Hom}(H_1,H_2)$, in order to estimate topological lower bounds for chromatic numbers of graphs. The definition is generalized to hypergraphs. Denoted by $K_r^r$ the complete $r$-graph on $r$ vertices. Given an $r$-graph $H$, we compare $\text{Hom}(K_r^r,H)$ with the box complex $\mathsf{B}_{\text{edge}}(H)$, invented by Alon, Frankl and Lovász. We verify that $\text{Hom}(K_r^r,H)$ and $\mathsf{B}_{\text{edge}}(H)$, both are equipped with right actions of the symmetric group on $r$ letters $S_r$…

A real number $α\in [0, 1)$ is a jump for an integer $r\ge 2$ if there exists $c>0$ such that no number in $(α, α+ c)$ can be the Turán density of a family of $r$-uniform graphs. A classical result of Erd\H os and Stone \cite{ES} implies that that every number in $[0, 1)$ is a jump for $r=2$. Erd\H os \cite{E64} also showed that every number in $[0, r!/r^r)$ is a jump for $r\ge 3$ and asked whether every number in $[0, 1)$ is a jump for $r\ge 3$. Frankl and Rödl \cite{FR84} gave a negative answer by showing a sequence of non-jumps for every $r\ge 3$. After this, Erd\H os modified the question …
Frank Harary introduced the concept of integral sum graph. A graph $G$ is an \emph{ integral sum graph} if its vertices can be labeled with distinct integers so that $e = uv$ is an edge of $G$ if and only if the sum of the labels on vertices $u$ and $v$ is also a label in $G.$ For any non-empty set of integers $S$, let $G^+(S)$ denote the integral sum graph on the set $S$. In $G^+(S)$, we define an \emph{edge-sum class} as the set of all edges each with same edge sum number and call $G^+(S)$ an \emph{edge sum color graph} if each edge-sum class is considered as an edge color class of $G^+(S)$.…
In 1972, Erdös - Faber - Lovász (EFL) conjectured that, if $\textbf{H}$ is a linear hypergraph consisting of $n$ edges of cardinality $n$, then it is possible to color the vertices with $n$ colors so that no two vertices with the same color are in the same edge. In 1978, Deza, Erdös and Frankl had given an equivalent version of the same for graphs: Let $G= \bigcup _{i=1}^{n} A_i$ denote a graph with $n$ complete graphs $A_1, A_2,$ $ \dots , A_n$, each having exactly $n$ vertices and have the property that every pair of complete graphs has at most one common vertex, then the chromatic number of…
In the dense graph limit theory, the topology of the set of graphs is defined by the distribution of the subgraphs spanned by finite number of random vertices. Vera T. Sós proposed a question that if we consider only the number of edges in the spanned subgraphs, then whether it provides an equivalent definition. We show that the answer is positive on quasirandom graphs, and we prove a generalization of the statement.
We present a 6-approximation algorithm for the minimum-cost $k$-node connected spanning subgraph problem, assuming that the number of nodes is at least $k^3(k-1)+k$. We apply a combinatorial preprocessing, based on the Frank-Tardos algorithm for $k$-outconnectivity, to transform any input into an instance such that the iterative rounding method gives a 2-approximation guarantee. This is the first constant-factor approximation algorithm even in the asymptotic setting of the problem, that is, the restriction to instances where the number of nodes is lower bounded by a function of $k$.
Graph bootstrap percolation is a deterministic cellular automaton which was introduced by Bollobás in 1968, and is defined as follows. Given a graph $H$, and a set $G \subset E(K_n)$ of initially `infected' edges, we infect, at each time step, a new edge $e$ if there is a copy of $H$ in $K_n$ such that $e$ is the only not-yet infected edge of $H$. We say that $G$ percolates in the $H$-bootstrap process if eventually every edge of $K_n$ is infected. The extremal questions for this model, when $H$ is the complete graph $K_r$, were solved (independently) by Alon, Kalai and Frankl almost thirty ye…
In this paper, we prove a generalization of a conjecture of Erdös, about the chromatic number of certain Kneser-type hypergraphs. For integers $n,k,r,s$ with $n\ge rk$ and $2\le s\le r$, the $r$-uniform general Kneser hypergraph $\mbox{KG}^r_s(n,k)$, has all $k$-subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ as the vertex set and all multi-sets $\{A_1,\dots, A_r\}$ of $k$-subsets with $s$-wise empty intersections as the edge set. The case $r=s=2$, was considers by Kneser \cite{K} in 1955, where he conjectured that its chromatic number is $n-2(k-1)$. This was finally proved by Lovász \cite{L} in 1978. The case $r>…
