Let r >= s >= 0 be integers and G be an r-graph. The higher inclusion matrix M_s^r(G) is a {0,1}-matrix with rows indexed by the edges of G and columns indexed by the subsets of V(G) of size s: the entry corresponding to an edge e and a subset S is 1 if S is contained in e and 0 otherwise. Following a question of Frankl and Tokushige and a result of Keevash, we define the rank-extremal function rex(n,t,r,s) as the maximum number of edges of an r-graph G having rank M_s^r(G) <=\binom{n}{s} - t. For t at most linear in n we determine this function as well as the extremal r-graphs. The special case t=1 answers a question of Keevash.
Let $n \geq r \geq s \geq 0$ be integers and $\mathcal{F}$ a family of $r$-subsets of $[n]$. Let $W_{r,s}^{\mathcal{F}}$ be the higher inclusion matrix of the subsets in ${\mathcal F}$ vs. the $s$-subsets of $[n]$. When $\mathcal{F}$ consists of all $r$-subsets of $[n]$, we shall simply write $W_{r,s}$ in place of $W_{r,s}^{\mathcal{F}}$. In this paper we prove that the rank of the higher inclusion matrix $W_{r,s}$ over an arbitrary field $K$ is resilient. That is, if the size of $\mathcal{F}$ is "close" to ${n \choose r}$ then $\mbox{rank}_{K}(W_{r,s}^{\mathcal{F}}) = \mbox{rank}_{K}(W_{r,s})…
Let (λ, v) be a known real eigenpair of a square real matrix A. In this paper it is shown how to locate the other eigenvalues of A in terms of the components of v. The obtained region is a union of Gershgorin discs of the second type recently introduced by the authors in a previous paper. Two cases are considered depending on whether or not some of the components of v are equal to zero. Upper bounds are obtained, in two different ways, for the largest eigenvalue in absolute value of A other than λ. Detailed examples are provided. Although nonnegative irreducible matrices are somewhat emphasize…
We present a new proof of the well known formula for the rank of the inclusion matrix by constructing a $k\mathcal{S}_n$-module spanned by the columns of this matrix and calculating its dimension.
Given integers $t$, $k$, and $v$ such that $0\leq t\leq k\leq v$, let $W_{tk}(v)$ be the inclusion matrix of $t$-subsets vs. $k$-subsets of a $v$-set. We modify slightly the concept of standard tableau to study the notion of rank of a finite set of positive integers which was introduced by Frankl. Utilizing this, a decomposition of the poset $2^{[v]}$ into symmetric skipless chains is given. Based on this decomposition, we construct an inclusion matrix, denoted by $W_{\bar{t}k}(v)$, which is row-equivalent to $W_{tk}(v)$. Its Smith normal form is determined. As applications, Wilson's diagonal …
We introduce and study three different notions of tropical rank for symmetric and dissimilarity matrices in terms of minimal decompositions into rank 1 symmetric matrices, star tree matrices, and tree matrices. Our results provide a close study of the tropical secant sets of certain nice tropical varieties, including the tropical Grassmannian. In particular, we determine the dimension of each secant set, the convex hull of the variety, and in most cases, the smallest secant set which is equal to the convex hull.
Let F_q be a finite field of order q with characteristic p. An arc is an ordered family of at least k vectors in (F_q)^k in which every subfamily of size k is a basis of (F_q)^k. The MDS conjecture, which was posed by Segre in 1955, states that if k <= q, then an arc in (F_q)^k has size at most q+1, unless q is even and k=3 or k=q-1, in which case it has size at most q+2. We propose a conjecture which would imply that the MDS conjecture is true for almost all values of k when q is odd. We prove our conjecture in two cases and thus give simpler proofs of the MDS conjecture when k <= p, and if q…
In this paper we announce a conjecture concerning enumeration of n-times persymmetric matrices over F_2 by rank. To justify our statement we remark that the formulas obtained are valid for n equal to one, two and three.
We study the behaviour of the 2-rank of the adjacency matrix of a graph under Seidel and Godsil-McKay switching, and apply the result to graphs coming from graphical Hadamard matrices of order $4^m$. Starting with graphs from known Hadamard matrices of order $64$, we find (by computer) many Godsil-McKay switching sets that increase the 2-rank. Thus we find strongly regular graphs with parameters $(63,32,16,16)$, $(64,36,20,20)$, and $(64,28,12,12)$ for almost all feasible 2-ranks. In addition we work out the behaviour of the 2-rank for a graph product related to the Kronecker product for Hadam…
We show that every principal submatrix of a square matrix $A$ with only entries in $\{0,1,-1\}$ has even rank if and only if $A$ is skew-symmetric up to multiplication of rows/columns by $-1$.
Let $A$ be a real matrix. The term rank of $A$ is the smallest number $t$ of lines (that is, rows or columns) needed to cover all the nonzero entries of $A$. We prove a conjecture of Li et al. stating that, if the rank of $A$ exceeds $t-3$, there is a rational matrix with the same sign pattern and rank as those of $A$. We point out a connection of the problem discussed with the Kapranov rank function of tropical matrices, and we show that the statement fails to hold in general if the rank of $A$ does not exceed $t-3$.
In this note, we generalize the technique developed in [13] and prove that every 5xn matrix of tropical rank at most 3 has Kapranov rank at most 3, for the ground field that contains at least 4 elements. For the ground field either F_2 or F_3, we construct an example of a 5x5 matrix with tropical rank 3 and Kapranov rank 4.
Connection matrices were introduced by Freedman, Lovasz and Schrijver [1], who used them to characterize graph homomorphism functions. The goal of this note is to determine the exact rank of these matrices. The result can be rephrased in terms of graph algebras (also introduced in [1]. Yet another version proves that if two k-tuples of nodes behave the same way from the point of view of graph homomorphisms, then they are equivalent under the automorphism group.
In this paper we investigate partial spreads of $H(2n-1,q^2)$ through the related notion of partial spread sets of hermitian matrices, and the more general notion of constant rank-distance sets. We prove a tight upper bound on the maximum size of a linear constant rank-distance set of hermitian matrices over finite fields, and as a consequence prove the maximality of extensions of symplectic semifield spreads as partial spreads of $H(2n-1,q^2)$. We prove upper bounds for constant rank-distance sets for even rank, construct large examples of these, and construct maximal partial spreads of $H(3,…
We characterize the rank of edge connection matrices of partition functions of real vertex models, as the dimension of the homogeneous components of the algebra of $G$-invariant tensors. Here $G$ is the sub- group of the real orthogonal group that stabilizes the vertex model. This answers a question of Balázs Szegedy from 2007.
We formulate conjectures regarding the maximum value and maximizing matrices of the permanent and of diagonal products on the set of stochastic matrices with bounded rank. We formulate equivalent conjectures on upper bounds for these functions for nonnegative matrices based on their rank, row sums and column sums. In particular we conjecture that the permanent of a singular nonnegative matrix is bounded by 1/2 times the minimum of the product of its row sums and the product of its column sums, and that the product of the elements of any diagonal of a singular nonnegative matrix is bounded by 1…
The minimum rank of a simple graph $G$ is defined to be the smallest possible rank over all symmetric real matrices whose $ij$th entry (for $i\neq j$) is nonzero whenever $\{i,j\}$ is an edge in $G$ and is zero otherwise. Minimum rank is a difficult parameter to compute. However, there are now a number of known reduction techniques and bounds that can be programmed on a computer; we have developed a program using the open-source mathematics software Sage to implement several techniques. We have also established several additional strategies for computation of minimum rank. These techniques hav…
In this paper we illustrate by some examples the connection between the number of solutions of polynomial equations satisfying degree conditions and the number of rank I matrices related to persymmetric matrices.
We establish lower bounds on the rank of matrices in which all but the diagonal entries lie in a multiplicative group of small rank. Applying these bounds we show that the distance sets of finite pointsets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ generate high rank multiplicative groups and that multiplicative groups of small rank cannot contain large sumsets.
We prove the conjecture that, for any $n$, the monoid of all $n \times n$ tropical matrices satisfies nontrivial semigroup identities. To this end, we prove that the factor rank of a large enough power of a tropical matrix does not exceed the tropical rank of the original matrix.
We investigate the rank of random (symmetric) sparse matrices. Our main finding is that with high probability, any dependency that occurs in such a matrix is formed by a set of few rows that contains an overwhelming number of zeros. This allows us to obtain an exact estimate for the co-rank.
The problem of optimal antipodal codes can be framed as finding low rank Gram matrices $G$ with $G_{ii} = 1$ and $|G_{ij}| \leq ε$ for $1 \leq i \neq j \leq n$. In 2018, Bukh and Cox introduced a new bounding technique by removing the condition that $G$ be a gram matrix. In this work, we investigate how tight this relaxation is, and find exact results for real valued matrices of rank $2$.
A tropical matrix is a matrix defined over the max-plus semiring. For such matrices, there exist several non-coinciding notions of rank: the row rank, the column rank, the Schein/Barvinok rank, the Kapranov rank, or the tropical rank, among others. In the present paper, we show that there exists a natural notion of ultimate rank for the powers of a tropical matrix, which does not depend on the underlying notion of rank. Furthermore, we provide a simple formula for the ultimate rank of a matrix which can therefore be computed in polynomial time. Then we turn our attention to finitely generated …
Motivated by applications to low-rank matrix completion, we give a combinatorial characterization of the independent sets in the algebraic matroid associated to the collection of $m\times n$ rank-2 matrices and $n\times n$ skew-symmetric rank-2 matrices. Our approach is to use tropical geometry to reduce this to a problem about phylogenetic trees which we then solve. In particular, we give a combinatorial description of the collections of pairwise distances between several taxa that may be arbitrarily prescribed while still allowing the resulting dissimilarity map to be completed to a tree met…
The binary rank of a $0,1$ matrix is the smallest size of a partition of its ones into monochromatic combinatorial rectangles. A matrix $M$ is called $(k_1, \ldots, k_m ; n_1, \ldots, n_m)$ circulant block diagonal if it is a block matrix with $m$ diagonal blocks, such that for each $i \in [m]$, the $i$th diagonal block of $M$ is the circulant matrix whose first row has $k_i$ ones followed by $n_i-k_i$ zeros, and all of whose other entries are zeros. In this work, we study the binary rank of these matrices and of their complement. In particular, we compare the binary rank of these matrices to …
We define the Augmentation property for binary matrices with respect to different rank functions. A matrix $A$ has the Augmentation property for a given rank function, if for any subset of column vectors $x_1,...,x_t$ for for which the rank of $A$ does not increase when augmented separately with each of the vectors $x_i$, $1\leq i \leq t$, it also holds that the rank does not increase when augmenting $A$ with all vectors $x_1,...,x_t$ simultaneously. This property holds trivially for the usual linear rank over the reals, but as we show, things change significantly when considering the binary a…
Let $M_n$ be a random $n\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. $\text{Bernoulli}(1/2)$ entries. We show that for fixed $k\ge 1$, \[\lim_{n\to \infty}\frac{1}{n}\log_2\mathbb{P}[\text{corank }M_n\ge k] = -k.\]
We study the rank of complex sparse matrices in which the supports of different columns have small intersections. The rank of these matrices, called design matrices, was the focus of a recent work by Barak et. al. (BDWY11) in which they were used to answer questions regarding point configurations. In this work we derive near-optimal rank bounds for these matrices and use them to obtain asymptotically tight bounds in many of the geometric applications. As a consequence of our improved analysis, we also obtain a new, linear algebraic, proof of Kelly's theorem, which is the complex analog of the …
Motivated by the work of Fulman and Goldstein, comparing the distribution of the corank of random matrices in $\mathbb F_q[n]$ with the limit distribution as $n \to \infty$, we define a countdown process, driven by independent geometric random variables related to random integer partitions. Analysis of this process leads to sharper bounds on the total variation distance.
We derive a sufficient condition for a sparse random matrix with given numbers of non-zero entries in the rows and columns having full row rank. The result covers both matrices over finite fields with independent non-zero entries and $\{0,1\}$-matrices over the rationals. The sufficient condition is generally necessary as well.
This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 13082 "Communication Complexity, Linear Optimization, and lower bounds for the nonnegative rank of matrices", held in February 2013 at Dagstuhl Castle.
In this paper we study how perturbing a matrix changes its non-negative rank. We prove that the non-negative rank is upper-semicontinuos and we describe some special families of perturbations. We show how our results relate to Statistics in terms of the study of Maximum Likelihood Estimation for mixture models.
