The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) Linac has been in operation for 52 years. In approximately four years, it will be replaced by a new 800 MeV superconducting machine, the PIP-II SRF Linac. In the current configuration, the Linac delivers H- ions at 400 MeV and injects protons by charge exchange into the Booster synchrotron. Despite its age, the Linac is the most stable accelerator in the FNAL complex, reliably sending 22 mA in daily operations. We will discuss the status of the operation, beam studies, and plans.
The Fermilab Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) was formed in late 2011 to address important and necessary upgrades to the Proton Source machines (Injector line, Linac and Booster). The goal is to increase the proton flux by doubling the Booster beam cycle rate while maintaining the same intensity per cycle, the same uptime, and the same residual activation in the enclosure. For the Linac, the main focus within PIP is to address reliability. One of the main tasks is to replace the present hard-tube modulator used on the 200 MHz RF system. Plans to replace this high power system with a Marx-topology…
The 40-year-old Fermilab Proton Source machines, constituted by the Pre-Injector, Linac and the synchrotron Booster, have been the workhorse of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). During this time, the High Energy Physics Program has demanded an increase in proton throughput, especially during the past decade with the beginning of the neutrino program at Fermilab. In order to achieve a successful program, major upgrades and changes were made in Booster. Once again, the Proton Source has been charged to double their beam throughput, while maintain the present residual activati…
The FNAL accelerator complex is poised to reach MW neutrino beams on target for the exploration of the dark sector physics and rare physics program spaces. Future operations of the complex will include CW linac operations at beam intensities that have not been seen before \cite{PIP2,RCS_LOI}. The ambitious beam program relies on multi-turn H$^{-}$ injection into the FNAL Booster and then extracted into delivery rings or the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) 8 GeV HEP program. A new rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS) will be required to reach the LBNF goal of 2.4 MW because of intense space-charge limit…
The Fermilab Proton Source machines, constituted by Pre-Injector, conventional Linac and Booster synchrotron, at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) had have a long history of successful beam operations. Built in late '60s, the Fermilab Proton Source began operations early in the '70s and since then it has successful provided protons to support the laboratory physics experiments. During the past decade, Booster performance reached unprecedented proton flux delivery of the order of 1.0-1.1E17 protons per hour, corresponding to 40 kW of beam power while maintained an allowed upper l…
This paper will detail changes in the operational paradigm of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) magnetron $H^{-}$ ion source due to upgrades in the accelerator system. Prior to November of 2012 the $H^{-}$ ions for High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments were extracted at ~18 keV vertically downward into a 90 degree bending magnet and accelerated through a Cockcroft-Walton accelerating column to 750 keV. Following the upgrade in the fall of 2012 the $H^{-}$ ions are now directly extracted from a magnetron at 35 keV and accelerated to 750 keV by a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ). …
A superconducting (SC) linac is expected to lead to outstanding discoveries in various scientific fields because its beam current is a few orders of magnitude larger than in a normal-conducting linac. However, the widespread use of SC linac is limited by the high construction and operation costs. To resolve this problem, we propose a continuous wave (CW) operation of a SC linac shared by electron/positron beams for effective multi-purposes utilization. A high current positron/electron beam is required for high-energy physics projects such as linear collider and muon collider while high-current…
Currently there is a Proposed FNAL 750keV Injector Upgrade for the replacement of the 40 year old Fermi National Laboratory (FNAL) Cockcroft-Walton accelerators with a new ion source and 200MHz Radio Frequency Quadruple (RFQ). The slit type magnetron being used now will be replaced with a round aperture magnetron similar to the one used at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL). Operational experience from BNL has shown that this type of source is more reliable with a longer lifetime due to better power efficiency. The current source development effort is to produce a reliable source with >60mA of H- b…
The Advanced Photon Source (APS) linear accelerator has two thermionic cathode rf guns and one photocathode rf gun. The thermionic guns are used primarily for APS operations while the photocathode gun is used as a free-electron laser (FEL) driver. With each gun requiring a different lattice and timing configuration, the need to change quickly between guns puts great demands on the accelerator operators. Using the Procedure Execution Manager (PEM), a software environment for managing automated procedures, we have made start-up and switch-over of the linac systems both easier and more reliable. …
Fermilab is currently constructing a superconducting electron linac that will eventually serve as the backbone of a user-driven facility for accelerator science. This contribution describes the accelerator and summarizes the enabled research thrusts. A detailed description of the facility can be found at [\url{http://apc.fnal.gov/programs2/ASTA_TEMP/index.shtml}].
Active discussion on the high energy physics priorities in the US carried out since summer of 2013 resulted in changes in Fermilab plans for future development of the existing accelerator complex. In particular, the scope of Project X was reduced to the support of the Long Base Neutrino Facility (LBNF) at the project first stage. The name of the facility was changed to the PIP-II (Proton Improvement Plan). This new facility is a logical extension of the existing Proton Improvement Plan aimed at doubling average power of the Fermilab's Booster and Main Injector (MI). Its design and required R&D…
A beam loss in the superconducting part of the SNS linac has been observed during its commissioning and operation. Although the loss does not prevent the SNS high power operation, it results in an almost uniform irradiation of linac components and increased radiation levels in the tunnel. Multi-particle tracking could neither account for the magnitude of the observed loss nor its dependence on machine parameters. It was recently found that the loss is consistent with the intrabeam particle collisions resulting in stripping of H- ions. The paper describes experimental observations and correspon…
We report results of the beam commissioning and first operation of the 1.3 GHz superconducting RF electron linear accelerator at Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility. Construction of the linac was completed and the machine was commissioned with beam in 2017. The maximum total beam energy of about 300 MeV was achieved with the record energy gain of 250 MeV in the ILC-type SRF cryomodule. The photoinjector was tuned to produce trains of 200 pC bunches with a frequency of 3 MHz at a repetition rate of 1 Hz. This report describes the aspects of machine commissioning such as …
The disassembly of the Unilac prestripper linac of the Wideroe type took place at the beginning of 1999. An increase of more than two orders of magnitude in particle number for the most heavy elements in the SIS had to be gained. Since that time the new High Current Injector (HSI) consisting of H-type RFQ and DTL-structures for dual beam operation was installed and successfully commissioned. The High Charge Injector (HLI) supplied the main linac during that time. Simultaneously conditioning and running in of the rf-transmitters and rf-structures were done. The HSI commissioning strategy includ…
We present a topology for linear accelerators (linacs) that permits larger degrees of freedom for the optimization of individual cavity shapes. The power is distributed to the cavities through a waveguide with periodic apertures that guarantees the correct phases and amplitudes along the structure. This topology optimizes the power consumption and efficiency and allows the manipulation of the surface fields for high gradient operation. It also provides a possibility for low-temperature manufacturing techniques for use with novel materials. This greatly enhanced performance for both normal and …
A superconducting linear accelerator operating in continuous-wave mode could produce X-ray free electron lasers (XFEL) at megahertz repetition rate, with the capability that delivering wide spectral range coherent radiation to multi end stations. In this Letter, the energy recovery Linac (ERL) mode is proposed to flexibly control the electron beam energy for a continuous-wave superconducting Linac. Theoretical investigations and multi-dimensional numerical simulations are applied to the Linac case of Shanghai high-repetition-rate XFEL and extreme light facility. The results show that, with ERL…
As an accelerator control system survives over several years, it is often the case that new subsystems are introduced into the original control system. The control system for the KEK electron/positron injector-linac has been using Unix workstations and VME computers since 1993. During the eight-year operation, we extended the system by introducing a) Windows PCs, b) PLC controllers with a network interface, and c) web servers based on modern information technology. Although such new subsystems are essential to improve control functionalities, they often cause communication problems with the or…
The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) [1] has been developed at Fermilab to provide powerful proton beams to the laboratorys experiments. An 800-MeV superconducting linear accelerator-a centerpiece of the project-is currently under construction in Batavia, Illinois (USA). After completion, the superconducting linac will be the starting point for the 1.2 MW (Phase 1) and 2.4-MW (Phase 2) proton beam that is needed for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) at Fermilab [2]. Due to unavoidable loss of a fraction of the beam in the accelerator components, a certain level of radiation will be…
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is being designed for operation in 2004. The SNS is a 1 GeV machine consisting of a combination normal-conducting and super-conducting linac as well as a ring and target area. The linac front end is a 402.5 MHz RFQ being developed by Lawrence Berkeley Lab. The DTL (at 402.5 MHz) and the CCL (at 805 MHz) stages are being developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory. The expected output energy of the DTL is 87 MeV and that of the CCL is 185 MeV. The RF control system under development for the linac is based on the Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) con…
Fermilab is developing a Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) to increase throughput of its proton source. The plan addresses hardware modifications to increase repetition rate and improve beam loss while ensuring viable operation of the proton source through 2025. The first phase of the PIP will enable the Fermilab proton source to deliver 1.8e17 protons per hour by mid-2013. As part of this initial upgrade, Fermilab plans to install a new front-end consisting of dual H- ion sources and a 201 MHz pulsed RFQ. This paper will present beam studies measurements of this new front-end and discuss new beam…
An S-band linear accelerator is the source of particles and the front end of the Advanced Photon Source injector. In addition, it supports a low-energy undulator test line (LEUTL) and drives a free-electron laser (FEL). A waveguide-switching and distribution system is now under construction. The system configuration was revised to be consistent with the recent change to electron-only operation. There are now six modulator-klystron subsystems, two of which are being configured to act as hot spares for two S-band transmitters each, so that no single failure will prevent injector operation. The t…
The JAERI/KEK Joint Project for the high-intensity proton accelerator facility has been proposed with a superconducting (SC) linac option from 400 MeV to 600MeV. System design of the SC linac has been carried out based on the equipartitioning concept. The SC linac is planned to use as an injector to a 3GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) for spallation neutron source after it meets requirement to momentum spread less than +-0.1%. In the R&D work for SC cavities, vertical tests of single-cell and 5 cell cavities were performed. Experiments on multi-cell (5 cell) cavities of b=0.50 and b=0.89 at…
Beam loss is a critical issue in high-intensity accelerators, and much effort is expended during both the design and operation phases to minimize the loss and to keep it to manageable levels. As new accelerators become ever more powerful, beam loss becomes even more critical. Linacs for H- ion beams, such as the one at the Oak Ridge Spallation Neutron Source, have many more loss mechanisms compared to H+ (proton) linacs, such as the one being designed for the European Spallation Neutron Source. Interesting H- beam loss mechanisms include residual gas stripping, H+ capture and acceleration, fie…
The LIGHT (Linac for Image-Guided Hadron Therapy) project was initiated to develop a modular proton accelerator delivering beam with energies up to 230 MeV for cancer therapy. The machine consists of three different kinds of accelerating structures: RFQ (Radio-Frequency Quadrupole), SCDTL (Side Coupled Drift Tube Linac) and CCL (Coupled Cavity Linac). These accelerating structures operate at 750 MHz (RFQ) and 3 GHz (SCDTL, CCL). The accelerator RF signals are generated, distributed, and controlled by a Low-Level RF (LLRF) system. The LIGHT LLRF system is based on a commercially available solut…
KEKB completed all of the technical milestones, and had offered important insights into the flavor structure of elementary particles, especially the CP violation. The accelerator control system at KEKB and injector linac was initiated by a combination of scripting languages at the operation layer and EPICS at the equipment layer. During the project many features were implemented to achieve extreme performance out of the machine. Especially the online linkage to the accelerator simulation played an essential role. In order to further improve the reliability and flexibility two major concepts we…
The H- Accelerator consists of a 750 keV Cockcroft Walton preaccelerator and an Alvarez type 50 MeV linac. The accelerator has been in operation since 1961. Since 1981, it has been used as the injector for the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS), a national user facility for neutron scattering. The linac delivers about 3.5x1012 H- ions per pulse, 30 times per second (30 Hz), for multi-turn injection to a 450 MeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS). IPNS presently operates about 4,000 hours per year, and operating when scheduled is critical to meeting the needs of the user community. For many year…
For proton linear accelerators used in applications such as accelerator-driven systems, due to the nature of the operation, it is essential for the beam failure rate to be several orders of magnitude lower than usual performance of similar accelerators. A fault-tolerant mechanism should be mandatorily imposed in order to maintain short recovery time, high uptime and extremely low frequency of beam loss. This paper proposes an innovative and challenging way for compensation and rematch of cavity failure using fast electronic devices and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) instead of embedded…
The second phase accelerator for the Dual Axis Hydrodynamic Test facility (DARHT) is designed to provide an electron beam pulse that is 2 microsec long, 2kA, and 20 MeV in particle energy. The injector provides 3.2 MeV so that the linac need only provide 16.8 MeV. The linac is made with two types of induction accelerator cells. The first block of 8 cells have a 14 in. beam pipe compared to 10 in. in the remaining 80 cells. The other principal difference is that the first 8 cells have reduced volt-sec in their induction cores as a result of a larger diameter beam pipe. The cells are designed fo…
Suppression of beam losses is essential for successful operation of high-intensity linac. Historically, the values of the field amplitudes and phases of the side-coupled, 805-MHz LANSCE linac modules are maintained using a well-known delta-t tuning procedure. Transverse matching of the beam with accelerator is performed through adjustments of beam ellipses in 4D phase space with accelerator lattice using matching quadrupoles. Control of the beam-energy ramp along the length of a proton linear accelerator is required to improve tune of accelerator and decrease beam losses. Time-of-flight measur…
Beam injections to KEKB and Photon Factory are performed with pulse-to-pulse modulation at 50 Hz. Three very different beams are switched every 20 ms in order to inject those beams into KEKB HER, LER and Photon Factory (PF) simultaneously. Human operators work on one of those three virtual accelerators, which correspond to three-fold accelerator parameters. Beam charges for PF injection and the primary electron for positron generation are 50-times different, and beam energies for PF and HER injection are 3-times different. Thus, the beam stabilities are sensitive to operational parameters, and…
Accelerators produce too many signals for a small operations team to monitor in real time. In addition, many of these signals are only interpretable by subject matter experts with years of experience. As a result, changes in accelerator performance can require time-intensive consultations with experts to identify the underlying problem. Herein, we focus on a particular anomaly detection task for radio-frequency (RF) stations at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The existing RF station diagnostics are bandwidth limited, resulting in slow, unreliable signals. As a result, anomaly detection…
Fermilab is committed to upgrade its accelerator complex to support HEP experiments at the intensity frontier. The ongoing Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) enables us to reach 700 kW beam power on the NuMI neutrino targets. By the end of the next decade, the current 400 MeV normal conducting LINAC will be replaced by an 800 MeV superconducting LINAC (PIP-II) with an increased beam power >50% of the PIP design goal. Both in PIP and PIP-II era, the existing Booster is going to play a very significant role, at least for next two decades. In the meanwhile, we have recently developed an innovative bea…
The cw CCL being designed for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) project accelerates protons from 96MeV to 211MeV. It consists of 99 segments each containing up to seven accelerating cavities. Segments are coupled by intersegment coupling cavities and grouped into supermodules. The design method needs to address not only basic cavity sizing for a given coupling and pi/2 mode frequency, but also the effects of high power densities on the cavity frequency, mechanical stresses, and the structure's stop band during operation. On the APT project, 3-D RF (Ansoft Corp.'s HFSS) and coupled RF…
The Linac to End Station A (LESA) beamline is being constructed at SLAC and will provide a near-CW beam of multi-GeV electrons to the SLAC End Station A for experiments in particle physics. The 1st half of LESA is ready for commissioning at the end of FY22 and the full beamline will be operational Q1 FY24. The low-current multi-GeV electron beam is produced parasitically by the superconducting RF (SRF) linac for the LCLS-II/LCLS-II-HE X-ray Free Electron Laser. LESA is designed to host experiments to detect light dark matter such as the Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) as well as a wide ran…

The accelerator systems are designed to deliver a 695 ns proton-pulse onto a mercury target at a 60-Hz repetition rate and an average power of 2-MW. Neutron moderators that will convert the spallation neutrons into slow neutrons for material science re…
Proton linear accelerator is the base Accelerator Driven Power System (ADS). Such ADS are dedicated to various purposes: weapon plutonium conversion, "energy amplifier", transmutation of radionuclear wastes etc. Solution of these tasks requires proton beams with energy 1 GeV and average current up to 30 mA. At the moment there are no problems of fundamental nature in such linac construction. The main problems have economic and technical aspects. Problems of CW linac will be demonstrated on the base beam dynamics requirements. New code package LIDOS.RFQ.Designer makes possible to simulate beam …
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) is in the process of being upgraded to a superconducting radio frequency (SRF) accelerator and renamed LCLS-II. This upgrade requires thirty five 1.3 GHz SRF cryomodules (CM) and two 3.9 GHz CM. A cryogenic distribution system (CDS) is in development by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory to interconnect the CM Linac with the cryogenic plant (CP). The CDS design utilizes cryogenic helium to support the CM operations with a high temperature thermal shield around 55 K, a low temperature thermal intercepts aroun…

Realization of a short bunch beam by manipulating the longitudinal phase space distribution with a finite longitudinal dispersion following an off-crest accelera- tion is a widely used technique. The technique was applied in a compact test accelerator of an energy-recovery linac scheme for compressing the bunch length at the return loop. A diagnostic system utilizing coherent transition radiation was developed for the beam tuning and for estimating the bunch length. By scanning the beam parameters, we experimentally found the best condition for the bunch compression. The RMS bunch length of 25…
The energy recovery linac test facility (ERL-TF), a compact ERL-FEL (free electron laser) two-purpose machine, was proposed at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing. As one important component of the ERL-TF, the photo-injector started with a photocathode direct-current gun has been designed. In this paper optimization of the injector beam dynamics in low-charge operation mode is performed with iterative scans using Impact-T. In addition, the dependencies between the optimized beam quality and the initial offset at cathode and element parameters are investigated. The tolerance of alignm…
SPIRAL 2 is a high intensity heavy ions beams accelerator project that has been going on for more than 10 years now. Countless efforts in different disciplines made it what it is today. One of the most important steps after the set up of the different equipments has been the very first full cool down of the superconducting cavities in an accelerator operation type configuration. While this has been a major achievement for the SPIRAL 2 teams, it also hi-lighted new challenges and constraints that would have to be addressed in order to have a high availability rate of the beam from the cryogenic…
The lack of equitable access to radiotherapy linear accelerators (LINACs) is a substantial barrier to cancer care in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Aside from the issue of cost, there are also issues of robustness of state-of-the-art LINACs in LMICs, which are subject to mechanical and electrical breakdowns, which can result in downtimes ranging from days to months. Recent research has identified disparities in failure frequency and downtimes between LMICs (Nigeria, Botswana) and a High-Income Countries (HIC, the UK), and highlighted the need for additional data and study particularl…
The TAC (Turkish Accelerator Center) IR FEL Oscillator facility, which has been supported by Turkish State Planning Organization (SPO) since 2006, will be based on a 15-40 MeV electron linac accompanying two different undulators with 2.5 cm and 9 cm periods in order to obtain IR FEL ranging between 2-250 microns. The electron linac will consist of two sequenced modules, each housing two 9-cell superconducting TESLA cavities for cw operation. It is planned that the TAC IR FEL facility will be completed in 2012 at Golbasi campus of Ankara University. This facility will give an opportunity to the…
In order to study the dynamic response of the material and the physical mechanism of the fluid dynamics, an accelerator scenario which can be applied to hard X-ray free electron laser and high energy electron radiography was proposed. This accelerator is mainly composed of a 12GeV linac, an undulator branch and an eRad beamline. In order to characterize sample's dynamic behavior in situ and real-time with XFEL and eRad simultaneously, the linac should be capable of accelerating the two kinds of beam within the same operation mode. Combining with in-vacuum and tapering techniques, the undulator…
During the operation of the China ADS Front End Superconducting Demo Linac of the China initiative Accelerator Driven System (CiADS), it was found that there was flashover happened on the surface of vacuum ceramic window in the pick-up coupler of superconducting cavity, which is uncommon under low temperature conditions. That seriously affects on the stable operation of the superconducting linear accelerator. By comparing the flashover trajectory on the electrical aging windows from the accelerator, the simulation results of the field emission electrons trajectory in the superconducting cavity…
For the proper operation of Dalian Compact Light Source (DCLS) linac, measurement and control of the electron bunch is critical. In order to test control algorithms and high level physical applications, a virtual accelerator environment is constructed based on ELEGANT and SDDS toolkit. The required beam parameter measurement and orbit control tools are verified under this virtual environment. The design concept and current development status are presented.
The Gamma Beam System (GBS) is a high brightness LINAC to be installed in Magurele (Bucharest) at the new ELI-NP (Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics) laboratory. The accelerated electrons, with energies ranging from 280 to 720 MeV, will collide with a high power laser to produce tunable high energy photons (0.2-20MeV ) with high intensity (10e13 photons/s), high brilliance and spectral purity (0.1% BW), through the Compton backscattering process. This light source will be open to users for nuclear photonics and nuclear physics advanced experiments. Tested high level applications wi…
Test beam and irradiation facilities are the key enabling infrastructures for research in high energy physics (HEP) and astro-particles. In the last 11 years the Beam-Test Facility (BTF) of the DAΦNE accelerator complex in the Frascati laboratory has gained an important role in the European infrastructures devoted to the development and testing of particle detectors. At the same time the BTF operation has been largely shadowed, in terms of resources, by the running of the DAΦNE electron-positron collider. The present proposal is aimed at improving the present performance of the facility from t…
