Suppression of beam losses is essential for successful operation of high-intensity linac. Historically, the values of the field amplitudes and phases of the side-coupled, 805-MHz LANSCE linac modules are maintained using a well-known delta-t tuning procedure. Transverse matching of the beam with accelerator is performed through adjustments of beam ellipses in 4D phase space with accelerator lattice using matching quadrupoles. Control of the beam-energy ramp along the length of a proton linear accelerator is required to improve tune of accelerator and decrease beam losses. Time-of-flight measurements of the H- beam energy are now being used to confirm and improve the overall control of the energy ramp along the linac. The time-of-flight method utilizes absolute measurements of beam energy using direct signals from beam at an oscilloscope, as well as the difference in RF phases measured as the beam passes installed delta-t pickup loops. A newly developed BPPM data acquisition system is used. Beam energy measurement along accelerator together with phase scans, klystrons output power control, and delta-t method, allow tuning of accelerator much more close to original design and reduce losses generated by linac. Details of the upgraded tuning procedure and results of tuning and operation are presented.

The 750-keV low-energy beam transport of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) linac consists of two independent beam lines that facilitate simultaneous injection of H+ and H- beams into the linear accelerator. The efficiency of beam transport within this structure is largely controlled by the effects of space-charge neutralization. In this paper, we report a series of experiments that were performed to determine the level, as well as the required timescale for the onset of beam space charge neutralization. Measurements performed along the structure indicate significant variation of n…

The front end of Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) linear accelerator uses four 201.25-MHz Drift-Tube Linacs (DTLs) to accelerate the H+ and H- beams to 100 MeV. Three of the 201.25-MHz DTLs are powered by diacrodes and the first DTL is powered by a tetrode. A 20-kW solid-state power amplifier (SSPA) is used to provide ~15 kW drive power to the tetrode. The SSPA is water-cooled and consists of 24 push-pull LDMOS transistors operating at 45% of their power saturation capability, providing ample power headroom and excellent linearity. However, the phase of the SSPA is perturbed at +/-20…
Radio frequency (RF) windows are historically a point where failure occurs in input-power couplers for accelerators. To understand more about the reliability of high power RF windows, lifetime testing was done on 700 MHz coaxial RF windows for the Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) project of the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) program. The RF windows, made by Marconi Applied Technologies (formerly EEV), were tested at 800 kW for an extended period of time. Changes in the reflected power, vacuum, air outlet temperature, and surface temperature were monitored over time. The res…

A high-intensity continuous wave (CW) radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator is designed for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The transmission efficiency of a 20-mA proton beam accelerated from 30 keV to 2.5 MeV can reach 98.7% at an operating frequency of 200 MHz. The beam dynamics has good tolerance to errors. By comparing the high-frequency parameters of quadrilateral and octagonal RFQ cross-sections, the quadrilateral structure of the four-vane cavity is selected owing to its multiple advantages, such as a smaller cross section at the same frequency and easy processing. In addit…
Linear accelerators containing the sequence of independently phased cavities with constant geometrical velocity along each structure are widely used in practice. The chain of cavities with identical cell lengths is utilized within a certain beam velocity range, with subsequent transformation to the next chain with higher cavity velocity. Design and analysis of beam dynamics in this type of accelerator are usually performed using numerical simulations. A full theoretical description of particle acceleration in an array of independent phased cavities has not been developed. In the present paper,…
We are currently operating the front end of the accelerator production of tritium (APT) accelerator, a 7 MeV radio frequency quadrapole (RFQ) using three, 1.2 MW CW klystrons. The high-power RF systems for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) program require high-power circulators at 350 MHz and 700 MHz to protect 1 MW Continuous Wave (CW) klystrons from reflected power. The 350 MHz circulator is based on the CERN, ESRF, and APS designs and has performed very well. The 700 MHz circulator is a new design. Prototype 700 MHz circulators have been high-power tested at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The first of these circulators has satisfied performance requirements. The circulator requirements, results from the testing, and lessons learned from this dev…

The beam emittance is inferred from wire scanner measurements of the beam profile at a single location in the H…
Two superconducting quarter-wave resonator (QWR) prototypes have been fabricated and tested. They operate at 80.5 MHz and 161 MHz and are optimised for beta = 0.085 and beta = 0.16, respectively. The prototypes are simplified versions without integrated helium vessels. In the first RF tests, the beta = 0.085 QWR reached a peak surface electric field (Ep) in excess of 30 MV/m, with an intrinsic quality factor (Q0) in excess of 1E9 at the design field of Ep = 20 MV/m. The beta = 0.16 QWR reached Ep = 20 MV/m with Q0 = 2.5E9. It is suspected that the performance of the latter cavity can be improv…

Electro-optical detection has proven to be a valuable technique to study temporal profiles of THz pulses with pulse durations down to femtoseconds. As the Coulomb field around a relativistic electron bunch resembles the current profile, electro-optical detection can be exploited for non-invasive bunch length measurements at accelerators. We have developed a very compact and robust electro-optical detection system based on spectral decoding for bunch length monitoring at the European XFEL with single-shot resolution better than 200~fs. Apart from the GaP crystal and the corresponding laser opti…

The radiofrequency resonant four-quadrant mechanical structure of a 4-vane Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) has a high quality factor and narrow bandwidth, resulting in high sensitivity to frequency detuning caused by thermal expansion under high power operation, so minimization of frequency errors and affording dynamic tuning are very important design issues. Here we describe an optimization approach to figure out a suitable cooling design for a 4-vane RFQ in steady state. Besides, we investigate how the accelerator responds in transient thermal analysis that could help to guide commissioning…

In the framework of the development of a new linac for carbon ion therapy, this article describes the design of a compact 750 MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) with trapezoidal vanes. A new semi-analytic approach to design the trapezoidal-vane RFQ is introduced together with the relevant beam dynamics properties. The RFQ is split into two decoupled r…
High-bunch-charge photoemission electron-sources operating in a continuous wave (CW) mode are required for many advanced applications of particle accelerators, such as electron coolers for hadron beams, electron-ion colliders, and free-electron lasers (FELs). Superconducting RF (SRF) has several advantages over other electron-gun technologies in CW mode as it offers higher acceleration rate and potentially can generate higher bunch charges and average beam currents. A 112 MHz SRF electron photoinjector (gun) was developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) to produce high-brightness and h…
Beam matching is a common technique that is routinely employed in accelerator design with the aim of minimizing beam losses and preservation of beam brightness. Here, we present an analytical treatment of 6D beam matching of a high-intensity beam onto an RF structure. We begin our analysis within the framework of a linear model, and apply the averaging method to a set of 3D beam envelope equations. Accordingly, we obtain a matched solution that is comprised of smoothed envelopes and periodic ter…

We summarize the current state of a concept for muon acceleration aimed at a future Neutrino Factory. The main thrust of these studies was to reduce the overall cost while maintaining performance by exploring the interplay between the complexity of the cooling systems and the acceptance of the accelerator complex. To ensure adequate survival for the short-lived muons, acceleration must occur at high average gradient. The need for large transverse and longitudinal acceptances drives the design of the acceleration system to an initially low RF frequency, e.g., 325 MHz, which is then increased to…
