Precession is one of the important mechanisms of gravitational wave generation in astrophysics. In general, free precession of a rigid body can be caused by the rotation of a triaxial body. In the case of symmetric body, if only the principal axis does not coincide with the axis of rotation, then there is the precession. When a symmetric body rotates around one of its principal axes, the body cannot move with precession. However, when there is a perturbation in angular velocity of the symmetric body spinning around the principal axis of the largest moment, the body can have a precession motion. In this paper, the wave forms and their characteristics of gravitational waves by the perturbation of a rotating axisymmetric rigid body are studied.
It is well known that all rotating perfect fluid stars in general relativity are unstable to certain non-axisymmetric perturbations via the Chandrasekhar-Friedman-Schutz (CFS) instability. However, the mechanism of the CFS instability requires, in an essential way, the loss of angular momentum by gravitational radiation and, in many instances, it acts on too long a timescale to be physically/astrophysically relevant. It is therefore of interest to examine the stability of rotating, relativistic stars to axisymmetric perturbations, where the CFS instability does not occur. In this paper, we pro…
We present a new numerical code to compute non-axisymmetric eigenmodes of rapidly rotating relativistic stars by adopting spatially conformally flat approximation of general relativity. The approximation suppresses the radiative degree of freedom of relativistic gravity and the field equations are cast into a set of elliptic equations. The code is tested against the low-order f- and p-modes of slowly rotating stars for which a good agreement is observed in frequencies computed by our new code and those computed by the full theory. Entire sequences of the low order counter-rotating f-modes are …
The aim of this paper is to clarify the stabilities of neutron stars with strong toroidal magnetic fields against non-axisymmetric perturbation. The motivation comes from the fact that super magnetized neutron stars of $\sim 10^{15}$G, magnetars, and magnetized proto-neutron stars born after the magnetically-driven supernovae are likely to have such strong toroidal magnetic fields. Long-term, three-dimensional general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic simulations are performed, preparing isentropic neutron stars with toroidal magnetic fields in equilibrium as initial conditions. To explore the…
We reduce Einstein's field equations for the interior of a uniformly rotating, axisymmetric perfect fluid to a system of six second order partial differential equations for the pressure p the energy density $μ$ and four dependent variables.Four of these equations do not depend on p and $μ$ and the other two determine p and $μ$.
Clairin's method of obtaining Bäcklund transformations is applied to Einstein's field equations for the interior of a uniformly rotating stationary axisymmetric perfect fluid. It is shown that for arbitrary pressure $p$ and mass density $μ$ the method does not give non-trivial Bäcklund transformations, while if $μ+ 3p =0$ it gives the transformation of Ehlers.
A relatively recent study by Mars and Senovilla provided us with a uniqueness result for the exterior vacuum gravitational field generated by an isolated distribution of matter in axial rotation in equilibrium in General Relativity. The generalisation to exterior electrovacuum gravitational fields, to include charged rotating objects, is presented here.
We calculate the scalar-gravitational quasi-normal modes of equal angular momenta Myers-Perry black holes in odd dimensions. We find a new bar-mode (non-axisymmetric) classical instability for $D \ge 7$. These black holes were previously found to be unstable to axisymmetric perturbations for spins very near extremality. The bar-mode instability we find sets in at much slower spins, and is therefore the dominant instability of these black holes. This instability has important consequences for the phase diagram of black holes in higher dimensions.
Quasi-equilibrium models of uniformly rotating axisymmetric and triaxial quark stars are computed in general relativistic gravity scenario. The Isenberg-Wilson-Mathews (IWM) formulation is employed and the Compact Object CALculator (COCAL) code is extended to treat rotating stars with finite surface density and new equations of state (EOSs). Besides the MIT bag model for quark matter which is composed of de-confined quarks, we examine a new EOS proposed by Lai and Xu that is based on quark clustering and results in a stiff EOS that can support masses up to $3.3M_\odot$ in the case we considere…
Non-axisymmetric oscillations of differentially rotating stars are studied using both slow rotation and Cowling approximation. The equilibrium stellar models are relativistic polytropes where differential rotation is described by the relativistic j-constant rotation law. The oscillation spectrum is studied versus three main parameters: the stellar compactness $M/R$, the degree of differential rotation $A$ and the number of maximun couplings $\ell_{\rm max}$. It is shown that the rotational splitting of the non-axisymmetric modes is strongly enhached by increasing the compactness of the star an…
We carry out a Lie group analysis of the Sachs equations for a time-dependent axisymmetric non-rotating space-time in which the Ricci tensor vanishes. These equations, which are the first two members of the set of Newman-Penrose equations, define the characteristic initial-value problem for the space-time. We find a particular form for the initial data such that these equations admit a Lie symmetry, and so defines a geometrically special class of such spacetimes. These should additionally be of particular physical interest because of this special geometric feature.
We solve a class of boundary value problems for the stationary axisymmetric Einstein equations corresponding to a disk of dust rotating uniformly around a central black hole. The solutions are given explicitly in terms of theta functions on a family of hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces of genus 4. In the absence of a disk, they reduce to the Kerr black hole. In the absence of a black hole, they reduce to the Neugebauer-Meinel disk.
Axisymmetric pulsations of rotating neutron stars can be excited in several scenarios, such as core-collapse, crust and core-quakes and binary mergers and could become detectable either in gravitational waves or high-energy radiation. Here, we present a comprehensive study of all low-order axisymmetric modes of uniformly and rapidly rotating relativistic stars. Initial stationary configurations are appropriately perturbed and are numerically evolved using an axisymmetric, nonlinear relativistic hydrodynamics code, assuming time-independence of the gravitational field (Cowling approximation). T…
The shadow of a black hole can be one of the strong observational evidences for stationary black holes. If we see shadows at the center of galaxies, we would say whether the observed compact objects are black holes. In this paper, we consider a formula for the contour of a shadow in an asymptotically-flat, stationary, and axisymmetric black hole spacetime. We show that the formula is useful for obtaining the contour of the shadow of several black holes such as the Kerr-Newman black hole and rotating regular black holes. Using the formula, we can obtain new examples of the contour of the shadow…
A class of stationary rigidly rotating perfect fluid coupled with non-linear electromagnetic fields was investigated. An exact solution of the Einstein equations with sources for the Carter B(+) branch was found, for the equation of state $3p + ε= constant$. We use a structural function for the Born-Infeld non-linear electrodynamics which is invariant under duality rotations and a metric possessing a four- parameter group of motions. The solution is of Petrov type D and the eigenvectors of the electromagnetic field are aligned to the Debever-Penrose vectors.

Stationary and axisymmetric solutions of relativistic rotating stars with strong mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields are obtained numerically. Because of the mixed components of the magnetic field, the underlying stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes are no longer circular. These configurations are computed from the full set of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, Maxwell's equations and from first integrals and integrability conditions of the magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium equations. After a brief introduction of the formulation of the problem, we present the first results for highly def…
We study non-linear axisymmetric pulsations of rotating relativistic stars using a general relativistic hydrodynamics code under the assumption of a conformal flatness. We compare our results to previous simulations where the spacetime dynamics was neglected. The pulsations are studied along various sequences of both uniformly and differentially rotating relativistic polytropes with index N = 1. We identify several modes, including the lowest-order l = 0, 2, and 4 axisymmetric modes, as well as several axisymmetric inertial modes. Differential rotation significantly lowers mode frequencies, in…
We give a thorough investigation of sequences of uniformly rotating, homogeneous axisymmetric Newtonian equilibrium configurations that bifurcate from highly flattened Maclaurin spheroids. Each one of these sequences possesses a mass-shedding limit. Starting at this point, the sequences proceed towards the Maclaurin sequence and beyond. The first sequence leads to the well known Dyson rings, whereas the end points of the higher sequences are characterized by the formation of a two-body system, either a core-ring system (for the second, the fourth etc. sequence) or a two-ring system (for the th…

Axisymmetric numerical simulations of rotating stellar core collapse to a neutron star are performed in the framework of full general relativity. The so-called Cartoon method, in which the Einstein field equations are solved in the Cartesian coordinates and the axisymmetric condition is imposed around the $y=0$ plane, is adopted. The hydrodynamic equations are solved in the cylindrical coordinates (on the $y=0$ plane in the Cartesian coordinates) using a high-resolution shock-capturing scheme with the maximum grid size $(2500,2500)$. A parametric equation of state is adopted to model collapsin…
A key result in the proof of black hole uniqueness in 4-dimensions is that a stationary black hole that is ``rotating''--i.e., is such that the stationary Killing field is not everywhere normal to the horizon--must be axisymmetric. The proof of this result in 4-dimensions relies on the fact that the orbits of the stationary Killing field on the horizon have the property that they must return to the same null geodesic generator of the horizon after a certain period, $P$. This latter property follows, in turn, from the fact that the cross-sections of the horizon are two-dimensional spheres. Howe…
We revisit secular stability against quasi-radial collapse for rigidly rotating supermassive stars (SMSs) in general relativity. We suppose that the SMSs are in a nuclear-burning phase and can be modeled by polytropic equations of state with the polytropic index $n_p$ slightly smaller than $3$. The stability is determined in terms of the turning-point method. We find a fitting formula of the stability condition for the plausible range of $n_p$ ($2.95 \alt n_p \alt 3$) for SMSs. This condition reconfirms that, while non-rotating SMSs with mass $\sim 10^5M_\odot$--$10^6M_\odot$ may undergo a gen…
Spherically symmetric spacetimes admit the so-called Kodama vector, which provides a locally conserved current and a preferred time even for dynamical spacetime without any time translation symmetry. A charge associated with this conserved current leads to a quasilocal mass which agrees with the Misner-Sharp mass. In three dimensions, spherically symmetric spacetimes correspond to axisymmetric ones, while axisymmetry allows spacetimes to be rotating with angular momentum. We extend the notion of the Kodama vector to axisymmetric rotating spacetimes in three dimensions. We also define a quasilo…
The gravitational field of a rigidly rotating perfect fluid cylinder with gamma- law equation of state is found analytically. The solution has two parameters and is physically realistic for gamma in the interval (1.41,2]. Closed timelike curves always appear at large distances.
The gravitational field of a rigidly rotating cylinder of charged dust is found analytically. The general and all regular solutions are divided into three classes. The acceleration and the vorticity of the dust are given, as well as the conditions for the appearance of closed timelike curves.
We present new results on dynamical instabilities in rapidly rotating neutron-stars. In particular, using numerical simulations in full General Relativity, we analyse the effects that the stellar compactness has on the threshold for the onset of the dynamical bar-mode instability, as well as on the appearance of other dynamical instabilities. By using an extrapolation technique developed and tested in our previous study [1], we explicitly determine the threshold for a wide range of compactnesses using four sequences of models of constant baryonic mass comprising a total of 59 stellar models. O…
Non-axisymmetric oscillations of rapidly rotating relativistic stars are studied using the Cowling approximation. The oscillation spectra have been estimated by Fourier transforming the evolution equations describing the perturbations. This is the first study of its kind and provides information on the effect of fast rotation on the oscillation spectra while it offers the possibility in studying the complete problem by including spacetime perturbations. Our study includes both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric perturbations and provides limits for the onset of the secular bar mode rotational i…
Based on numerical simulations and analytical calculations we formulate a new conjecture concerning the multipole moments of a rigidly rotating fluid body in equilibrium. The conjecture implies that the exterior region of such a fluid is not described by the Kerr metric.
Motivated by a recent paper by the Potsdam numerical relativity group, we have constructed a new numerical code for hydrodynamic simulation of axisymmetric systems in full general relativity. In this code, we solve the Einstein field equation using Cartesian coordinates with appropriate boundary conditions. On the other hand, the hydrodynamic equations are solved in cylindrical coordinates. Using this code, we perform simulations to study axisymmetric collapse of rotating stars, which thereby become black holes or new compact stars, in full general relativity. To investigate the effects of rot…
We take an axisymmetric rotating universe model by crossing with a time dependent factor and evaluate its force and momentum in this evolving universe. It is concluded that it behaves exactly like a Friedmann model. We also extend this conclusion to the most general cosmological model.
We consider rotating black hole configurations of self-gravitating maps from spacetime into arbitrary Riemannian manifolds. We first establish the integrability conditions for the Killing fields generating the stationary and the axisymmetric isometry (circularity theorem). Restricting ourselves to mappings with harmonic action, we subsequently prove that the only stationary and axisymmetric, asymptotically flat black hole solution with regular event horizon is the Kerr metric. Together with the uniqueness result for non-rotating configurations and the strong rigidity theorem, this establishes …
Bondi's approach to the construction of a coordinate system is used with a different choice of gauge, in accordance with which the radial coordinate r is an affine parameter, to cast the metric tensor into a form suitable for use with the Newman-Penrose null tetrad formalism. The choice of tetrad has the result that the equations and all the functions that appear in them are real-valued. A group classification of the Sachs equations in this gauge leads to a unique expression for the first of the five independent elements $Ψ_0$ of the Weyl spinor, and to the corresponding exact solutions for tw…
In this paper, we study the physical properties and the equilibrium thermal radiation emission characteristics of matter forming thin accretion disks in stationary axially symmetric wormhole spacetimes. The thin disk models are constructed by taking different values of the wormhole's angular velocity, and the time averaged energy flux, the disk temperature and the emission spectra of the accretion disks are obtained. Comparing the mass accretion in a rotating wormhole geometry with the one of a Kerr black hole, we verify that the intensity of the flux emerging from the disk surface is greater …
We study time evolutions of superfluid neutron stars, focussing on the nature of the oscillation spectrum, the effect of mutual friction force on the oscillations and the hydrodynamical spin-up phase of pulsar glitches. We linearise the dynamical equations of a Newtonian two-fluid model for rapidly rotating backgrounds. In the axisymmetric equilibrium configurations, the two fluid components corotate and are in beta-equilibrium. We use analytical equations of state that generate stratified and non-stratified stellar models, which enable us to study the coupling between the dynamical degrees of…
In a recent paper we presented analytic expressions for the axis potential, the disk metric, and the surface mass density of the global solution to Einstein's field equations describing a rigidly rotating disk of dust. Here we add the complete solution in terms of ultraelliptic functions and quadratures.
Within the weak-field, post-Newtonian approximation of the metric theories of gravity, we determine the one-way time transfer up to the order 1/c^4, the unperturbed term being of order 1/c, and the frequency shift up to the order 1/c^4. We adapt the method of the world-function developed by Synge to the Nordtvedt-Will PPN formalism. We get an integral expression for the world-function up to the order 1/c^3 and we apply this result to the field of an isolated, axisymmetric rotating body. We give a new procedure enabling to calculate the influence of the mass and spin multipole moments of the bo…
We study the stationary and axisymmetric non-convective differentially rotating perfect-fluid solutions of Einstein's field equations admitting one conformal symmetry. We analyse the two inequivalent Lie algebras not exhaustively considered in Mars and Senovilla, 1994, and show that the general solution for each Lie algebra depends on one arbitrary function of one of the coordinates while a set of three ordinary differential equations for four unknowns remains to be solved. The conformal Killing vector of these solutions is necessarily homothetic. We summarize in a table all the possible solut…
We consider rigidly rotating states in thermal equilibrium on static spherically symmetric spacetimes. Using the Maxwell-Juttner equilibrium distribution function, onstructed as a solution of the relativistic Boltzmann equation, the equilibrium particle flow four-vector, stress-energy tensor and the transport coefficients in the Marle model are computed. Their properties are discussed in view of the topology of the speed-of-light surface induced by the rotation for two classes of spacetimes: maximally symmetric (Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter) and charged (Reissner-Nordstrom) black-ho…
In this work we present an approximate solution of the Einstein equations describing a global model for the gravitational field generated by a bounded, self-gravitating stationary and axisymmetric body rotating rigidly with constant angular velocity.
It is shown that the interior solution of axially symmetric, stationary and rigidly rotating dust configurations is completely determined by the mass density along the axis of rotation. The particularly interesting case of a mass density, which is cylindrical symmetric in the interior of the dust configuration, is presented. Among other things, this proves the non-existence of homogeneous dust configurations.
This note describes fitting formulae for the gravitational waveforms generated by a rapidly rotating neutron star (e.g., newly-formed in the core collapse of a supernova) as it evolves from an initial axisymmetric configuration toward a triaxial ellipsoid.
We describe a set of time evolution equations and its numerical implementation for the investigation of non-axisymmetric oscillations of rapidly rotating compact objects in full General Relativity, taking into account the contribution of a dynamic spacetime. We derive the perturbation equations for the spacetime in the Hilbert gauge, while the hydrodynamical evolution is based on perturbations of the energy-momentum tensor. In our numerical implementation, we use Kreiss-Oliger dissipation in order to achieve a stable time evolution. Our code features high accuracy at comparably low computation…
We use a recent result by Cabezas et al. to build up an approximate solution to the gravitational field created by a rigidly rotating polytrope. We solve the linearized Einstein equations inside and outside the surface of zero pressure including second-order corrections due to rotational motion to get an asymptotically flat metric in a global harmonic coordinate system. We prove that if the metric and their first derivatives are continuous on the matching surface up to this order of approximation, the multipole moments of this metric cannot be fitted to those of the Kerr metric.
Using time evolutions of the relevant linearised equations we study non-axisymmetric oscillations of rapidly rotating and superfluid neutron stars. We consider perturbations of Newtonian axisymmetric background configurations and account for the presence of superfluid components via the standard two-fluid model. Within the Cowling approximation, we are able to carry out evolutions for uniformly rotating stars up to the mass-shedding limit. This leads to the first detailed analysis of superfluid neutron star oscillations in the fast rotation regime, where the star is significantly deformed by t…
Shape dynamics is a classical theory of gravity which agrees with general relativity in many important aspects, but which possesses different gauge symmetries and can present some fundamental global differences with respect to Einstein spacetimes. Here, we present a general procedure for (locally) mapping stationary, axisymmetric general relativity solutions onto their shape dynamic counterparts. We focus in particular on the rotating black hole solution for shape dynamics and show that many of the properties of the spherically symmetric solution are preserved in the extension to the axisymmet…
Stationary, axisymmetric and slowly rotating vacuum spacetimes in the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity are studied, and shown that, for any given spherical static vacuum solution of the HL theory (of any model, including the ones with an additional U(1) symmetry), there always exists a corresponding slowly rotating, stationary and axisymmetric vacuum solution, which reduces to the former, when the rotation is switched off. The rotation is universal and only implicitly depends on the models of the HL theory and their coupling constants through the spherical seed solution. As a result, all asymptoti…
We write down the relevant field equations for a stationary axially symmetric rigidly rotating dust source in such a way that the general solution depends upon the solution of an elliptic equation and upon harmonic functions. Starting with the dipole Bonnor solution, we built an asymptotically flat solution with two curvature singularities on the rotational axis with diverging mass. Apart from the two point singularities on the axis, the metric is regular everywhere. Finally, we study a non-asymptotically flat solution with NUT charge and a massless ring singularity, but with a well-defined ma…
The kinematic evolution of axisymmetric magnetic fields in rotating magnetospheres of relativistic compact objects is analytically studied, based on relativistic Ohm's law in stationary axisymmetric geometry. By neglecting the poloidal flows of plasma in simplified magnetospheric models, we discuss self-excited dynamos due to the frame-dragging effect (originally pointed out by Khanna & Camenzind), and we propose alternative processes to generate axisymmetric magnetic fields against ohmic dissipation. The first process (which may be called induced excitation) is caused by the help of a backgro…
We investigate the effects of general relativity upon the non-axisymmetric ``bar'' mode secular instability of rapidly rotating stars, i.e. the relativistic and compressible analog of the transition from Maclaurin spheroids to Jacobi ellipsoids. Our method consists in perturbing a stationary axisymmetric configuration, constructed by a 2-D general relativistic numerical code, and taking into account only the dominant terms in the non-axisymmetric part of the 3-D relativistic equations. For a polytropic equation of state, we have determined, as a function of the degree of relativity, the critic…
In this work we check the validity of the no scalar hair theorem in charged axisymmetric stationary black holes for a wide class of scalar tensor theories.
Stationary axisymmetric metric describing the exterior field of a rotating, charged sphere endowed with magnetic dipole moment is presented and discussed. It has a remarkably simple multipole structure defined by only four nonzero Hoenselaers-Perjés relativistic moments.
In the literature, the Newman-Janis algorithm (NJA) has been widely used to construct stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes to describe rotating black holes. In addition, it has been recently shown that the general stationary and axisymmetric spacetime generated through NJA allows the complete separability of the null geodesic equations. In fact, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in this spacetime is also separable if one of the metric functions is additively separable. In this work, we further study the conditions for a separable Klein-Gordon equation in such a general spacetime. The relations be…
In this review article, we present the main results from our most recent research concerning the oscillations of fast rotating neutron stars. We derive a set of time evolution equations for the investigation of non-axisymmetric oscillations of rapidly rotating compact objects in full general relativity, taking into account the contribution of a dynamic spacetime. Using our code, which features high accuracy at comparably low computational expense, we are able to extract the frequencies of non-axisymmetric modes of compact objects with rotation rates up to the Kepler limit. We propose various u…
We show that under certain conditions an axisymmetric rotating spacetime contains a ring of points in the equatorial plane, where a particle at rest with respect to an asymptotic static observer remains at rest in a static orbit. We illustrate the emergence of such orbits for boson stars. Further examples are wormholes, hairy black holes and Kerr-Newman solutions.
Gravitational waves from oscillating neutron stars in axial symmetry are studied performing numerical simulations in full general relativity. Neutron stars are modeled by a polytropic equation of state for simplicity. A gauge-invariant wave extraction method as well as a quadrupole formula are adopted for computation of gravitational waves. It is found that the gauge-invariant variables systematically contain numerical errors generated near the outer boundaries in the present axisymmetric computation. We clarify their origin, and illustrate it possible to eliminate the dominant part of the sys…
