Non-axisymmetric oscillations of rapidly rotating relativistic stars are studied using the Cowling approximation. The oscillation spectra have been estimated by Fourier transforming the evolution equations describing the perturbations. This is the first study of its kind and provides information on the effect of fast rotation on the oscillation spectra while it offers the possibility in studying the complete problem by including spacetime perturbations. Our study includes both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric perturbations and provides limits for the onset of the secular bar mode rotational instability. We also present approximate formulae for the dependence of the oscillation spectrum from rotation. The results suggest that it is possible to extract the relativistic star's parameters from the observed gravitational wave spectrum.
We perform 3D numerical simulations in full general relativity to study the stability of rapidly rotating, supramassive neutron stars at the mass-shedding limit to dynamical collapse. We adopt an adiabatic equation of state with $Γ= 2$ and focus on uniformly rotating stars. We find that the onset of dynamical instability along mass-shedding sequences nearly coincides with the onset of secular instability. Unstable stars collapse to rotating black holes within about one rotation period. We also study the collapse of stable stars which have been destabilized by pressure depletion (e.g. via a pha…
The equations describing nonradial adiabatic oscillations of differentially rotating relativistic stars are derived in relativistic slow rotation approximation. The differentially rotating configuration is described by a perturbative version of the relativistic j-constant rotation law. Focusing on the oscillation properties of the stellar fluid, the adiabatic nonradial perturbations are studied in the Cowling approximation with a system of five partial differential equations. In these equations, differential rotation introduces new coupling terms between the perturbative quantites with respect…
Relativistic Cowling approximation in which all metric perturbations are omitted is applied to non-axisymmetric infinitesimal oscillations of uniformly rotating general relativistic polytropes. Frequencies of lower order f-modes which are important in analysis of secular instability driven by gravitational radiation are investigated and neutral points of the mode along equilibrium sequences of rotating polytropes are determined. Since this approximation becomes more accurate as stars are more relativistic and/or as they rotates more rapidly, we will be able to analyze how a rotation period of …
For the analysis of the r-mode oscillation of hot young neutron stars, it is necessary to consider the effect of it differential rotation, because viscosity is not strong enough for differentially rotating young neutron stars to be lead to uniformly rotating configurations on a very short time scale after their birth. In this paper, we have developed a numerical scheme to solve r-mode oscillations of differentially rotating polytropic inviscid stars. This is the extended version of the method which was applied to compute r-mode oscillations of uniformly rotating Newtonian polytropic stars. By …
Since the last Amaldi meeting in 1997 we have learned that the r-modes of rapidly rotating neutron stars are unstable to gravitational radiation reaction in astrophysically realistic conditions. Newborn neutron stars rotating more rapidly than about 100Hz may spin down to that frequency during up to one year after the supernova that gives them birth, emitting gravitational waves which might be detectable by the enhanced LIGO interferometers at a distance which includes several supernovae per year. A cosmological background of these events may be detectable by advanced LIGO. The spins (about 30…
To investigate the formation mechanism of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei and micro-quasars, we have developed a new general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic code in Kerr geometry. Here we report on the first numerical simulation of jet formation in a rapidly-rotating (a=0.95) Kerr black hole magnetosphere. We study cases in which the Keplerian accretion disk is both co-rotating and counter-rotating with respect to the black hole rotation. In the co-rotating disk case, our results are almost the same as those in Schwarzschild black hole cases: a gas pressure-driven jet is formed by…
The first results of numerical analysis of classical r-modes of {\it rapidly} rotating compressible stellar models are reported. The full set of linear perturbation equations of rotating stars in Newtonian gravity are numerically solved without the slow rotation approximation. A critical curve of gravitational wave emission induced instability which restricts the rotational frequencies of hot young neutron stars is obtained. Taking the standard cooling mechanisms of neutron stars into account, we also show the `evolutionary curves' along which neutron stars are supposed to evolve as cooling an…
Uniformly rotating, homogeneous, incompressible Maclaurin spheroids that spin sufficiently rapidly are secularly unstable to nonaxisymmetric, bar-mode perturbations when viscosity is present. The intuitive explanation is that energy dissipation by viscosity can drive an unstable spheroid to a stable, triaxial configuration of lower energy - a Jacobi ellipsoid. But what about rapidly rotating compressible stars? Unlike incompressible stars, which contain no internal energy and therefore immediately liberate all the energy dissipated by viscosity, compressible stars have internal energy and can …
We study low-amplitude crustal oscillations of slowly rotating relativistic stars consisting of a central fluid core and an outer thin solid crust. We estimate the effect of rotation on the torsional toroidal modes and on the interfacial and shear spheroidal modes. The results compared against the Newtonian ones for wide range of neutron star models and equations of state.
This note describes fitting formulae for the gravitational waveforms generated by a rapidly rotating neutron star (e.g., newly-formed in the core collapse of a supernova) as it evolves from an initial axisymmetric configuration toward a triaxial ellipsoid.
It has been recently demonstrated that the orbital velocity profile around Kerr black holes in the equatorial plane as observed in the locally non-rotating frame exhibits a non-monotonic radial behaviour. We show here that this unexpected minimum-maximum feature of the orbital velocity remains if the Kerr vacuum is generalized to the Kerr-de Sitter or Kerr-anti-de Sitter metric. This is a new general relativity effect in Kerr spacetimes with non-vanishing cosmological constant. Assuming that the profile of the orbital velocity is known, this effect constrains the spacetime parameters.
We construct models of rotating stars using the perturbative approach introduced by J. Hartle in 1967, and a set of equations of state proposed to model hadronic interactions in the inner core of neutron stars. We integrate the equations of stellar structure to third order in the angular velocity and show, comparing our results to those obtained with fully non linear codes, to what extent third order corrections are needed to accurately reproduce the moment of inertia of a star which rotates at rates comparable to that of the fastest isolated pulsars.
Recent observations of Galactic Black Hole Candidates (BHCs) suggest that those that are superluminal jet sources have more rapid black hole spin rates than otherwise normal BHCs. This provides observational support for models of relativistic jet formation that extract rotational energy of the central black hole. To investigate this mechanism, we have developed a new general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic code in Kerr geometry. Here we report on the first numerical simulation of the formation of a relativistic jet in a rapidly-rotating (a=0.95) Kerr black hole magnetosphere. We assume that t…
We use time-evolutions of the linear perturbation equations to study the oscillations of rapidly rotating neutrons stars. Our models account for the buoyancy due to composition gradients and we study, for the first time, the nature of the resultant g-modes in a fast spinning star. We provide detailed comparisons of non-stratified and stratified models. This leads to an improved understanding of the relationship between the inertial modes of a non-stratified star and the g-modes of a stratified system. In particular, we demonstrate that each g-mode becomes rotation-dominated, i.e. approaches a …
We discuss an astrometric timing effect on data analysis of continuous gravitational waves from rapidly rotating isolated neutron stars. Special attention is directed to the possibility of determining their distances by measuring the curvature of the wave fronts. We predict that if continuous gravitational waves from an unknown neutron star with a stable rotation are detected around 1kHz within 1/3yr by initial LIGO detectors and the ellipticity parameter epsilon is smaller than 10^{-6}, the distance r to the source can be estimated with relative error Δr/r of \sim 10% by using the broad band …
Rapidly rotating white dwarfs in cataclysmic variable systems may be emitting gravitational radiation due to the recently discovered relativistic r-mode instability. Assuming that the four most rapidly rotating known systems are limited in rotation rate by the instability, the amplitude of the emitted gravitational waves is determined at Earth for both known rapid rotators and for a model background caused by a galactic population of such systems. The proposed LISA and OMEGA space-based interferometer gravitational wave detectors could observe such signals and determine whether the r-mode inst…
We present results from numerical solution of Einstein's equation in five dimensions describing evolution of rapidly rotating black holes. We show, for the first time, that the rapidly rotating black holes in higher dimensions are unstable against nonaxisymmetric deformation; for the five-dimensional case, the critical value of spin parameter for onset of the instability is $\approx 0.87$.
We consider rapidly rotating black holes and neutron stars in dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGBd) theory and determine their quadrupole moments, which receive a contribution from the dilaton. The quadrupole moment of EGBd black holes can be considerably larger than the Kerr value. For neutron stars, the universality property of the $\hat I$-$\hat Q$ relation between the scaled moment of inertia and the scaled quadrupole moment appears to extend to EGBd theory.
Within general relativity, we construct sequences of rapidly rotating Dirac stars consisting of a spinor fluid described by an effective equation of state. We find the physically relevant domain of stable configurations and calculate their principal characteristics which are completely determined by the central density of the spinor fluid, the mass of the nonlinear spinor field, and the velocity of rotation. It is demonstrated that for a certain choice of the spinor field mass, the main physical characteristics of the Dirac stars are close to those that are typical of rotating neutron stars.
I discuss the range of validity of Detweiler's formula for the resonant frequencies of rapidly rotating Kerr black holes. While his formula is correct for extremal black holes, it has also been commonly accepted that it describes very well the resonant frequencies of near extremal black holes, and that therefore there is a large number of modes clustering on the real axis as the black hole becomes extremal. I will show that this last statement is not only incorrect, but that it also does not follow from Detweiler's formula, provided it is handled with due care. It turns out that only the first…
The Klein-Gordon equation for a massive scalar field in the background of a rapidly-rotating Kerr black hole is studied analytically. In particular, we derive a simple formula for the stationary (marginally-stable) resonances of the field in the black-hole spacetime. The analytically derived formula is shown to agree with direct numerical computations of the resonances. Our results provide an upper bound on the instability regime of rapidly-rotating Kerr black holes to massive scalar perturbations.
We discuss a Chern-Simons (CS) scalar field around a rapidly rotating black hole in dynamical CS modified gravity. The CS correction can be obtained perturbatively by considering the Kerr spacetime to be the background. We obtain the CS scalar field solution around the black hole analytically and numerically, assuming a stationary and axisymmetric configuration. The scalar field diverges on the inner horizon when we impose the boundary condition that the scalar field is regular on the outer horizon and vanishes at infinity. Therefore, the CS scalar field becomes problematic on the inner horizo…
We present a new numerical code to compute non-axisymmetric eigenmodes of rapidly rotating relativistic stars by adopting spatially conformally flat approximation of general relativity. The approximation suppresses the radiative degree of freedom of relativistic gravity and the field equations are cast into a set of elliptic equations. The code is tested against the low-order f- and p-modes of slowly rotating stars for which a good agreement is observed in frequencies computed by our new code and those computed by the full theory. Entire sequences of the low order counter-rotating f-modes are …
We study analytically the relaxation phase of perturbed, rapidly rotating black holes. In particular, we derive a simple formula for the fundamental quasinormal resonances of near-extremal Kerr black holes. The formula is expressed in terms of the black-hole physical parameters: omega=m Omega-i2 pi T(n+1/2), where T and Omega are the temperature and angular velocity of the black hole, and m is the azimuthal harmonic index of a co-rotating equatorial mode. This formula implies that the relaxation period tau sim 1/Im(omega) of the black hole becomes extremely long as the extremal limit T to 0 is…
It is shown that rapidly-rotating Kerr black holes are characterized by the dimensionless ratio $τ_{\text{gap}}/τ_{\text{emission}}=O(1)$, where $τ_{\text{gap}}$ is the average time gap between the emission of successive Hawking quanta and $τ_{\text{emission}}$ is the characteristic timescale required for an individual Hawking quantum to be emitted from the black hole. This relation implies that the Hawking cascade from rapidly-rotating black holes has an almost continuous character. Our results correct some inaccurate claims that recently appeared in the literature regarding the nature of the…
We construct sequences of rapidly rotating neutron stars in dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, employing two equations of state for the nuclear matter. We analyze the dependence of the physical properties of these neutron stars on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling strength. For a given equation of state we determine the physically relevant domain of rapidly rotating neutron stars, which is delimited by the set of neutron stars rotating at the Kepler limit, the set of neutron stars along the secular instability line, and the set of static neutron stars. As compared to Einstein gravity, the presenc…
We solve the 2+1-dimensional Teukolsky equation numerically for the Weyl scalars $ψ_0$ and $ψ_4$ along a time-like geodesic approaching the Cauchy horizon of a rapidly rotating perturbed Kerr black hole. We find that both the amplitude and frequency of the Weyl scalars agree with the results of linear perturbation analysis. We then model a physical object by a simple damped harmonic oscillator, which is driven by an external force that mimics the tidal force experienced by the infalling object. We use this model to find the total deformation of the object at the Cauchy horizon, and the resonan…
Quasi-toroidal oscillations in slowly rotating stars are examined in the framework of general relativity. The oscillation frequency to first order of the rotation rate is not a single value even for uniform rotation unlike the Newtonian case. All the oscillation frequencies of the r-modes are purely neutral and form a continuous spectrum limited to a certain range. The allowed frequencies are determined by the resonance condition between the perturbation and background mean flow. The resonant frequency varies with the radius according to general relativistic dragging effect.
$f(R)$ theories of gravity are one of the most popular alternative explanations for dark energy and therefore studying the possible astrophysical implications of these theories is an important task. In the present paper we make a substantial advance in this direction by considering rapidly rotating neutron stars in $R^2$ gravity. The results are obtained numerically and the method we use is non-perturbative and self-consistent. The neutron star properties, such as mass, radius and moment of inertia, are studied in detail and the results show that rotation magnifies the deviations from general …
We prove the existence of a unique family of non-oscillatory (purely-imaginary) polar quasinormal resonances of rapidly-rotating Kerr black holes. These purely imaginary resonances can be expressed in the compact form: w_n=-i2*pi*T_{BH}*(l+1+n), where T_{BH} is the black-hole temperature, l is the spheroidal harmonic index of the mode, and n=0,1,2,... is the resonance parameter. It is shown that our analytical results for the black-hole resonance spectrum agree with new numerical data that recently appeared in the literature.
We construct rapidly rotating neutron star models in scalar-tensor theories with a massive scalar field. The fact that the scalar field has nonzero mass leads to very interesting results since the allowed range of values of the coupling parameters is significantly broadened. These deviations from pure general relativity can be very large for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. The rapid rotation can magnify the differences several times compared to the static case. The universal relations between the normalized moment of inertia and quadrupole moment are also …
We present the field equations governing the equilibrium of rapidly rotating neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories of gravity, as well as representative numerical solutions. The conditions for the presence of a nontrivial scalar field and the deviations from the general relativistic solutions are studied. Two examples of scalar-tensor theories are examined - one case that is equivalent to the Brans-Dicke theory and a second case, that is perturbatively equivalent to Einstein's General Relativity in the weak field regime, but can differ significantly for strong fields. Our numerical results s…
In the present paper we examine gravitational wave asteroseismology relations for f-modes of rapidly rotating neutron stars. An approach different to the previous studies is employed - first, the moment of inertia is used instead of the stellar radius, and second, the normalization of the oscillation frequencies and damping times is different. It was shown that in the non-rotating case this can lead to a much stronger equation of state independence and our goal is to generalize the static relations to the rapidly rotating case and values of the spherical mode number $l\ge2$. We employ realisti…
We report on numerical calculations of orbital and epicyclic frequencies in nearly circular orbits around rotating neutron stars and strange quark stars. The FPS equation of state was used to describe the neutron star structure while the MIT bag model was used to model the equation of state of strange quark stars. The uniformly rotating stellar configurations were computed in full general relativity. We find that the vertical epicyclic frequency is very sensitive to the oblateness of the rotating star. For models of rotating neutron stars of moderate mass, as well as for strange quark star mod…
We examine the toroidal oscillations on the slowly rotating relativistic stars in tensor-vector-scalar (TeVeS) theory with the Cowling approximation. As a result, we find that perturbation equations describing the toroidal oscillations are same equation form as in general relativity (GR). Although the frequencies of toroidal oscillations in TeVeS are not so different from those in GR, the momentum inertia depends strongly on the gravitational theory. Thus, observing the frequencies of toroidal oscillations and momentum inertia with high accuracy might reveal the gravitational theory in the str…
We consider generic axially symmetric rotating spacetimes and examine particle collisions in the ergoregion. The results are generic and agree with those obtained in the particular case of the rotating Teo wormhole in N. Tsukamoto and C. Bambi, Phys. Rev. D 91, 104040 (2015). It is shown that for sufficiently rapid rotation, the energy of a particle escaping to infinity can become arbitrary large (so-called super-Penrose process). Moreover, this energy is typically much larger than the center-of mass energy of colliding particles. In this sense the situation differs radically from that for col…
We consider a universal relation between moment of inertia and quadrupole moment of arbitrarily fast rotating neutron stars. Recent studies suggest that this relation breaks down for fast rotation. We find that it is still universal among various suggested equations of state for constant values of certain dimensionless parameters characterizing the magnitude of rotation. One of these parameters includes the neutron star radius, leading to a new universal relation expressing the radius through the mass, frequency, and spin parameter. This can become a powerful tool for radius measurements.
Classical Censorship permits AdS$_5$-Kerr black holes with arbitrarily large angular momenta per unit mass, which does not seem reasonable from a holographic point of view. However, it has been shown that, when these black holes are embedded in string theory, their angular momentum per unit mass is in fact bounded by $2\sqrt{2}L$, where $L$ is the asymptotic curvature scale. One might suppose that the most rapidly rotating AdS$_5$-Kerr black holes, with angular momentum per unit mass close to this bound, might be unstable, for example, to a superradiant instability. We show that this is not al…
Viscosity driven bar mode secular instabilities of rapidly rotating neutron stars are studied using LORENE/Nrotstar code. These instabilities set a more rigorous limit to the rotation frequency of neutron star than the Kepler frequency/mass shedding limit. The procedure employed in the code comprises of perturbing an axisymmetric and stationary configuration of a neutron star and studying its evolution by constructing a series of triaxial quasi-equilibrium configurations. Symmetry breaking point was found out for Polytropic as well as 10 realistic Equations of states (EOS) from the CompOSE dat…
Rapidly rotating black holes are a prime arena for understanding corrections to Einstein's theory of general relativity (GR). We construct solutions for rapidly rotating black holes in dynamical Chern-Simons (dCS) gravity, a useful and motivated example of a post-GR correction. We treat dCS as an effective theory and thus work in the decoupling limit, where we apply a perturbation scheme using the Kerr metric as the background solution. Using the solutions to the scalar field and the trace of the metric perturbation, we determine the regime of validity of our perturbative approach. We find tha…
We study the orbital and epicyclic frequencies of particles orbiting around rapidly rotating neutron stars and strange stars in a particular scalar-tensor theory of gravity. We find very large deviations of these frequencies, when compared to their corresponding values in general relativity, for the maximum-mass rotating models. In contrast, for models rotating with spin frequency of 700Hz (approximately the largest known rotation rate of neutron stars), the deviations are generally small. Nevertheless, for a very stiff equation of state and a high mass the deviation of one of the epicyclic fr…
We investigate the dynamics of r modes at amplitudes in the nonlinear regime for rapidly but uniformly rotating neutron stars with a polytropic equation of state. For this, we perform three-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamical simulations, making the simplifying assumption of a fixed spacetime. We find that for initial dimensionless amplitudes around three, r modes decay on timescales around ten oscillation periods, while at amplitudes of order unity, they are stable over the evolution timescale. Together with the decay, a strong differential rotation develops, conserving the total angular …
The neutrino oscillations in the field of a rotating deformed mass is investigated. The phase shift is evaluated in the case of weak field limit, slow rotation and small deformation. To this aim the Hartle-Thorne metric is used, which is an approximate solution of the vacuum Einstein equations accurate to second order in the rotation parameter $a/M$ and to first order in the mass quadrupole moment $q$. Implications on atmospheric, solar and astrophysical neutrinos are discussed.
We analytically study the linear response of a near-extremal Kerr black hole to external scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational field perturbations. We show that the energy density, electromagnetic field strength, and tidal force experienced by infalling observers exhibit transient growth near the horizon. The growth lasts arbitrarily long in the extremal limit, reproducing the horizon instability of extremal Kerr. We explain these results in terms of near-horizon geometry and discuss potential astrophysical implications.
In this paper we study the shadow of rotating Kaluza-Klein (KK) black holes and the connection between the shadow radius and the real part of quasi-normal modes (QNMs) in the eiokonal limit. In addition we have explored the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the rotating KK black hole.
Neutron stars are attractive places to look for dark matter because their high densities allow repeated interactions. Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) may scatter efficiently in the core or in the crust of a neutron star. In this paper we focus on WIMP contributions to transport properties, such as shear viscosity or thermal conductivity, because these can be greatly enhanced by long mean free paths. We speculate that WIMPs increase the shear viscosity of neutron star matter and help stabilize r-mode oscillations. These are collective oscillations where the restoring force is the C…
