\noindent Consider an infinite collection of particles on the real line moving according to independent Brownian motions and such that the $i$-th particle from the left gets the drift $g_{i-1}$. The case where $g_0=1$ and $g_{i}=0$ for all $i \in \mathbb{N}$ corresponds to the well studied infinite Atlas model. Under conditions on the drift vector $\boldsymbol{g} = (g_0, g_1, \ldots)'$ it is known that the Markov process corresponding to the gap sequence of the associated ranked particles has a continuum of product form stationary distributions $\{π_a^{\boldsymbol{g}}, a \in S^{\boldsymbol{g}}\}$ where $S^{\boldsymbol{g}}$ is a semi-infinite interval of the real line. In this work we show that all of these stationary distributions are extremal and ergodic. We also prove that any product form stationary distribution of this Markov process that satisfies a mild integrability condition must be $π_a^{\boldsymbol{g}}$ for some $a \in S^{\boldsymbol{g}}$. These results are new even for the infinite Atlas model. The work makes progress on the open problem of characterizing all the invariant distributions of general competing Brownian particle systems interacting through their relative ranks. Proofs rely on synchronous and mirror coupling of Brownian particles and properties of the intersection local times of the various particles in the infinite system.
We first study the convergence of solutions of a system of F-KPP equations related to irreducible multitype branching Brownian motions with Heaviside-type initial conditions to traveling wave solutions. Then we apply this convergence result to prove that the extremal processes of irreducible multitype branching Brownian motions converges weakly to a cluster point process.
In a previous paper, the authors proved a conjecture of Lalley and Sellke that the empirical (time-averaged) distribution function of the maximum of branching Brownian motion converges almost surely to a Gumbel distribution. The result is extended here to the entire system of particles that are extremal, i.e. close to the maximum. Namely, it is proved that the distribution of extremal particles under time-average converges to a Poisson cluster process.
We derive asymptotics for the probability of the origin to be an extremal point of a random walk in R^n. We show that in order for the probability to be roughly 1/2, the number of steps of the random walk should be between e^{c n / log n}$ and e^{C n log n}. As a result, we attain a bound for the ?pi/2-covering time of a spherical brownian motion.
We construct and describe the extremal process for variable speed branching Brownian motion, studied recently by Fang and Zeitouni, for the case of piecewise constant speeds; in fact for simplicity we concentrate on the case when the speed is $σ_1$ for $s\leq bt$ and $σ_2$ when $bt\leq s\leq t$. In the case $σ_1>σ_2$, the process is the concatenation of two BBM extremal processes, as expected. In the case $σ_1<σ_2$, a new family of cluster point processes arises, that are similar, but distinctively different from the BBM process. Our proofs follow the strategy of Arguin, Bovier, and Kistler.
By using the law of the excursions of Brownian motion with drift, we find the distribution of the $n-$th passage time of Brownian motion through a straight line $S(t)= a + bt.$ In the special case when $b = 0,$ we extend the result to a space-time transformation of Brownian motion.
We prove the convergence of the extremal processes for variable speed branching Brownian motions where the "speed functions", that describe the time-inhomogeneous variance, lie strictly below their concave hull and satisfy a certain weak regularity condition. These limiting objects are universal in the sense that they only depend on the slope of the speed function at $0$ and the final time $t$. The proof is based on previous results for two-speed BBM obtained in a recent paper of ours and uses Gaussian comparison arguments to extend these to the general case.
We derive integral formulas, involving the Airy function, for moments of the time a two-sided Brownian motion with parabolic drift attains its maximum.
The d-inverse is a generalized notion of inverse of a stochastic process having a certain tendency of increasing expectations. Scaling limit of the d-inverse of Brownian motion with functional drift is studied. Except for degenerate case, the class of possible scaling limits is proved to consist of the d-inverses of Brownian motion without drift, one with explosion in finite time, and one with power drift.
We prove that the extremal process of branching Brownian motion, in the limit of large times, converges weakly to a cluster point process. The limiting process is a (randomly shifted) Poisson cluster process, where the positions of the clusters is a Poisson process with exponential density. The law of the individual clusters is characterized as branching Brownian motions conditioned to perform "unusually large displacements", and its existence is proved. The proof combines three main ingredients. First, the results of Bramson on the convergence of solutions of the Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piscouno…
We extend the results of Arguin et al and A\"ıdékon et al on the convergence of the extremal process of branching Brownian motion by adding an extra dimension that encodes the "location" of the particle in the underlying Galton-Watson tree. We show that the limit is a cluster point process on $\mathbb{R}_+\times \mathbb{R}$ where each cluster is the atom of a Poisson point process on $\mathbb{R}_+\times \mathbb{R}$ with a random intensity measure $Z(dz) \times Ce^{-\sqrt 2x}dx$, where the random measure is explicitly constructed from the derivative martingale. This work is motivated by an anal…
Recently Ren et al. [Stoch. Proc. Appl., 137 (2021)] have proved that the extremal process of the super-Brownian motion converges in distribution in the limit of large times. Their techniques rely heavily on the study of the convergence of solutions to the Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piscounov equation along the lines of [M. Bramson, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc., 44 (1983)]. In this paper we take a different approach. Our approach is based on the skeleton decomposition of super-Brownian motion. The skeleton may be interpreted as immortal particles that determine the large time behaviour of the process. We e…
In this paper we study the drifted Brownian meander, that is a Brownian motion starting from $ u $ and subject to the condition that $ \min_{ 0\leq z \leq t} B(z)> v $ with $ u > v $. The limiting process for $ u \downarrow v $ is analyzed and the sufficient conditions for its construction are given. We also study the distribution of the maximum of the meander with drift and the related first-passage times. The representation of the meander endowed with a drift is provided and extends the well-known result of the driftless case. The last part concerns the drifted excursion process the distribu…
In this paper, we obtain an explicit representation of the transition density of the one-dimensional skew Brownian motion with (a constant drift and) two semipermeable barriers. Moreover we propose a rejection method to simulate this density in an exact way.
In this paper we consider a (reflected) Brownian motion with broken drift hitting a random boundary. Some dedicated calculations allow us to obtain the formula on the joint Laplace transform of the hitting time and hitting position. These develop the research on first rendezvous times of (reflected) Brownian motion and compound Poisson-type processes by Perry et al. (2004).
In this paper, using an algorithm based on the retrospective rejection sampling scheme, we propose an exact simulation of a Brownian diffusion whose drift admits several jumps. We treat explicitly and extensively the case of two jumps, providing numerical simulations. Our main contribution is to manage the technical diffculty due to the presence of two jumps thanks to a new explicit expression of the transition density of the skew Brownian motion with two semipermeable barriers and a constant drift.
In this article, we derive the explicit transition density functions of skew Brownian motion (SBM in abbreviation) with two-valued drift for all $t>0$. As an important step of this result, it is also shown in this paper that SBM with two-valued drift is a strong Markov process by finding its symmetrizing measure and canonical scale function, from which one can tell what values of the drift make such a process transient or recurrent.
Explicit formulae for the densities of the first hitting times to the sphere of Brownian motions with drifts are given. We need to consider the joint distributions of the first hitting times to the sphere and the hitting positions of the standard Brownian motion and explicit expression for their Laplace transforms are given, which are different from the known formulae in the literature and are of independnt interest.
We establish a small time large deviation principle and a Varadhan type asymptotics for Brownian motion with singular drift on $\bR^d$ with $d\geq 3$ whose infinitesimal generator is $\frac12 Δ+ μ\cdot \nabla$, where each $μ_i$ of $μ= (μ_1, \cdots, μ_d)$ is a measure in some suitable Kato class.
Many properties of Brownian motion on spaces with varying dimension (BMVD in abbreviation) have been explored in [5]. In this paper, we study Brownian motion with drift on spaces with varying dimension (BMVD with drift in abbreviation). Such a process can be conveniently defined by a regular Dirichlet form that is not necessarily symmetric. The drift term is in some type of $L^{p}$ space with $p$ depending on the region of the state space. We show BMVD with drift can be related to a BMVD without drift via Girsanov transform. Through the method of Duhamel's principle, it is established in this …
In this paper, we establish limit theorems for the supremum of the support, denoted by $M_t$, of a supercritical super-Brownian motion $\{X_t, t\ge0\}$ on $\mathbb{R}$. We prove that there exists an $m(t)$ such that $(X_t-m(t), M_t-m(t))$ converges in law, and give some large deviation results for $M_t$ as $t\to\infty$. We also prove that the limit of the extremal process $\mathcal{E}_t:=X_t-m(t)$ is a Poisson random measure with exponential intensity in which each atom is decorated by an independent copy of an auxiliary measure. These results are analogues of the results for branching Brownia…
A famous result of Orey and Taylor gives the Hausdorff dimension of the set of fast times, that is the set of points where linear Brownian motion moves faster than according to the law of iterated logarithm. In this paper we examine what happens to the set of fast times if a variable drift is added to linear Brownian motion. In particular, we will show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of fast times cannot be decreased by adding a function to Brownian motion.
Strongly consistent and asymptotically normal estimators of the Hurst index and volatility parameters of solutions of stochastic differential equations with polynomial drift are proposed. The estimators are based on discrete observations of the underlying processes.
We study the maximum of a Brownian motion with a parabolic drift; this is a random variable that often occurs as a limit of the maximum of discrete processes whose expectations have a maximum at an interior point. We give series expansions and integral formulas for the distribution and the first two moments, together with numerical values to high precision.
In this paper, high-order moment, even exponential moment, estimates are established for the Hölder norm of solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion whose drifts are measurable and have linear growth. As applications, we first study the weak uniqueness of solutions to fractional stochastic differential equations. Moreover, combining our estimates and the Fourier transform, we establish the existence of density of solutions to equations with irregular drifts.
In this paper, we will first give the numerical simulation of the sub-fractional Brownian motion through the relation of fractional Brownian motion instead of its representation of random walk. In order to verify the rationality of this simulation, we propose a practical estimator associated with the LSE of the drift parameter of mixed sub-fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, and illustrate the asymptotical properties according to our method of simulation when the Hurst parameter $H>1/2$.
An analog of the Trotter formula for the Arratia flow is presented. Perturbations of the Brownian web by mappings associated with an ordinary differential equation with a smooth right part are considered and proved to be convergent exclusively in the weak sense. The flow obtained as a limit is the Arratia flow with drift.
Consider the motion of a Brownian particle in three dimensions, whose two spatial coordinates are standard Brownian motions with zero drift, and the remaining (unknown) spatial coordinate is a standard Brownian motion with a non-zero drift. Given that the position of the Brownian particle is being observed in real time, the problem is to detect as soon as possible and with minimal probabilities of the wrong terminal decisions, which spatial coordinate has the non-zero drift. We solve this problem in the Bayesian formulation, under any prior probabilities of the non-zero drift being in any of t…
In this paper we prove the existence of strong solutions to a SDE with a generalized drift driven by a multidimensional fractional Brownian motion for small Hurst parameters H<1/2. Here the generalized drift is given as the local time of the unknown solution process, which can be considered an extension of the concept of a skew Brownian motion to the case of fractional Brownian motion. Our approach for the construction of strong solutions is new and relies on techniques from Malliavin calculus combined with a "local time variational calculus" argument.
We investigate the tail distribution of the first exit time of Brownian motion with drift from a cone and find its exact asymptotics for a large class of cones. Our results show in particular that its exponential decreasing rate is a function of the distance between the drift and the cone, whereas the polynomial part in the asymptotics depends on the position of the drift with respect to the cone and its polar cone, and reflects the local geometry of the cone at the point where the drift is orthogonally projected.
We solve an optimal stopping problem where the underlying diffusion is Brownian motion on $\bf R$ with a positive drift changing at zero. It is assumed that the drift $μ_1$ on the negative side is smaller than the drift $μ_2$ on the positive side. The main observation is that if $μ_2-μ_1>1/2$ then there exists values of the discounting parameter for which it is not optimal to stop in the vicinity of zero where the drift changes. However, when the discounting gets bigger the stopping region becomes connected and contains zero. This is in contrast with results concerning optimal stopping of skew…
We study interacting systems of linear Brownian motions whose drift vector at every time point is determined by the relative ranks of the coordinate processes at that time. Our main objective has been to study the long range behavior of the spacings between the Brownian motions arranged in increasing order. For finitely many Brownian motions interacting in this manner, we characterize drifts for which the family of laws of the vector of spacings is tight, and show its convergence to a unique stationary joint distribution given by independent exponential distributions with varying means. We als…
Let (B^{(1)}_t ;B^{(2)}_t ;B^{(3)}_t + μt) be a three-dimensional Brownian motion with drift μ, starting at the origin. Then X_t = ||(B^{(1)}_t ;B^{(2)}_t ;B^{(3)}_t +μt)||, its distance from the starting point, is a diffusion with many applications. We investigate the distribution of the supremum of (X_t), give an infinite-series formula for its density and an exact estimate by elementary functions.
In this article, we study the extremal processes of branching Brownian motions conditioned on having an unusually large maximum. The limiting point measures form a one-parameter family and are the decoration point measures in the extremal processes of several branching processes, including branching Brownian motions with variable speed and multitype branching Brownian motions. We give a new, alternative representation of these point measures and we show that they form a continuous family. This also yields a simple probabilistic expression for the constant that appears in the large deviation pr…
In this paper we consider the iterated Brownian motion $ ^{μ_1}_{μ_2}\!I(t) = B_1^{μ_1} ( | B_{2}^{μ_2} (t)|) $ where $B_j^{μ_j} , j=1,2$ are two independent Brownian motions with drift $μ_j$. Here we study the last zero crossing of $ ^{μ_1}_{μ_2}\!I(t) $ and for this purpose we derive the last zero-crossing distribution of the drifted Brownian motion. We derive also the joint distribution of the last zero crossing before $ t $ and of the first passage time through the zero level of a Brownian motion with drift $ μ$ after $ t $. All these results permit us to derive explicit formulas for ${^I_…
Consider a random walker on the nonnegative lattice, moving in continuous time, whose positive transition intensity is proportional to the time the walker spends at the origin. In this way, the walker is a jump process with a stochastic and adapted jump intensity. We show that, upon Brownian scaling, the sequence of such processes converges to Brownian motion with inert drift (BMID). BMID was introduced by Frank Knight in 2001 and generalized by White in 2007. This confirms a conjecture of Burdzy and White in 2008 in the one-dimensional setting.
We study reflecting Brownian motion with drift constrained to a wedge in the plane. Our first set of results provide necessary and sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of a solution to the corresponding submartingale problem with drift, and show that its solution possesses the Markov and Feller properties. Next, we study a version of the problem with absorption at the vertex of the wedge. In this case, we provide a condition for existence and uniqueness of a solution to the problem and some results on the probability of the vertex being reached.
Consider the motion of a Brownian particle in two or more dimensions, whose coordinate processes are standard Brownian motions with zero drift initially, and then at some random/unobservable time, one of the coordinate processes gets a (known) non-zero drift permanently. Given that the position of the Brownian particle is being observed in real time, the problem is to detect the time at which a coordinate process gets the drift as accurately as possible. We solve this problem in the most uncertain scenario when the random/unobservable time is (i) exponentially distributed and (ii) independent …
This paper derives an exact asymptotic expression for \[ \mathbb{P}_{\mathbf{x}_u}\{\exists_{t\ge0} \mathbf{X}(t)- \boldsymbolμt\in \mathcal{U} \}, \ \ {\rm as}\ \ u\to\infty, \] where $\mathbf{X}(t)=(X_1(t),\ldots,X_d(t))^\top,t\ge0$ is a correlated $d$-dimensional Brownian motion starting at the point $\mathbf{x}_u=-\boldsymbolαu$ with $\boldsymbolα\in \mathbb{R}^d$, $\boldsymbolμ \in \mathbb{R}^d$ and $\mathcal{U}=\prod_{i=1}^d [0,\infty)$. The derived asymptotics depends on the solution of an underlying multidimensional quadratic optimization problem with constraints, which leads in some c…
In this paper we obtain a Wiener-Hopf type factorization for a real-valued arithmetic Brownian motion with time-dependent drift and volatility. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the very first step towards realizing the objective of deriving Wiener-Hopf type factorizations for (real-valued) time-inhomogeneous Levy processes. In order to prove our main theorem, we derive some new results regarding time-inhomogeneous noisy Wiener-Hopf factorization. We demonstrate that in the special case of the arithmetic Brownian motion with constant drift and volatility our main result agrees with c…
Let $B^{H}$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$, $f:[0,1]\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{d}$ a Borel function, and $E\subset[0,1]$, $F\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$ are given Borel sets. The focus of this paper is on hitting probabilities of the fractional Brownian motion $B^{H}$ with the deterministic drift $f$. It aims to highlight the role of the regularity properties of the drift $f$ as well as that of the dimension of $E$ in determining the upper and lower bounds of $\mathbb{P}\{(B^H+f)(E)\cap F\neq \emptyset \}$ for $F$ a subset of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and also fo…
In this note we consider the time of the collision $τ$ for $n$ independent Brownian motions $X^1_t,...,X_t^n$ with drifts $a_1,...,a_n$, each starting from $x=(x_1,...,x_n)$, where $x_1<...<x_n$. We show the exact asymptotics of $P_x(τ>t) = C h(x)t^{-α}e^{-γt}(1 + o(1))$ as $t\to\infty$ and identify $C,h(x),α,γ$ in terms of the drifts.
Fractional equations governing the distribution of reflecting drifted Brownian motions are presented. The equations are expressed in terms of tempered Riemann--Liouville type derivatives. For these operators a Marchaud-type form is obtained and a Riesz tempered fractional derivative is examined, together with its Fourier transform.
We study fractal properties of the image and the graph of Brownian motion in $\R^d$ with an arbitrary c{à}dl{à}g drift $f$. We prove that the Minkowski (box) dimension of both the image and the graph of $B+f$ over $A\subseteq [0,1]$ are a.s.\ constants. We then show that for all $d\geq 1$ the Minkowski dimension of $(B+f)(A)$ is at least the maximum of the Minkowski dimension of $f(A)$ and that of $B(A)$. We also prove analogous results for the graph. For linear Brownian motion, if the drift $f$ is continuous and $A=[0,1]$, then the corresponding inequality for the graph is actually an equalit…
We study a scaled version of a two-parameter Brownian penalization model introduced by Roynette-Vallois-Yor in arXiv:math/0511102. The original model penalizes Brownian motion with drift $h\in\mathbb{R}$ by the weight process ${\big(\exp(νS_t):t\geq 0\big)}$ where $ν\in\mathbb{R}$ and $\big(S_t:t\geq 0\big)$ is the running maximum of the Brownian motion. It was shown there that the resulting penalized process exhibits three distinct phases corresponding to different regions of the $(ν,h)$-plane. In this paper, we investigate the effect of penalizing the Brownian motion concurrently with scalin…
We study the long-range asymptotic behavior for an out-of-equilibrium countable one-dimensional system of Brownian particles interacting through their rank-dependent drifts. Focusing on the semi-infinite case, where only the leftmost particle gets a constant drift to the right, we derive and solve the corresponding one- sided Stefan (free-boundary) equations. Via this solution we explicitly determine the limiting particle-density profile as well as the asymptotic trajectory of the leftmost particle. While doing so we further establish stochastic domination and convergence to equilibrium result…
Consider the $λ$-Green function and the $λ$-Poisson kernel of a Lipschitz domain $U\subset \mathbb H^n=\left\{x\in\mathbb R^n:x_n>0\right\}$ for hyperbolic Brownian motion with drift. We provide several relationships that facilitate studying those objects and explain somehow theirs nature. As an application, we yield uniform estimates in case of sets of the form $S_{a,b}=\{x\in\mathbb H^n:x_n>a, x_1\in(0,b)\}$, $a,b>0$, $a,b>0$, which covers and extends existing results of that kind.
We derive the probability density function of the positive occupation time of one-dimensional Brownian motion with two-valued drift. Long time asymptotics of the density are also computed. We use the result to describe the transitional probability density function of a general N-dimensional system of stochastic differential equations representing stochastically perturbed sliding motion of a discontinuous, piecewise-smooth vector field on short time frames. A description of the density at larger times is obtained via an asymptotic expansion of the Fokker-Planck equation.
We derive the strong consistency of the least squares estimator for the drift coefficient of a fractional stochastic differential system. The drift coeffcient is one-sided dissipative Lipschitz and the driving noise is additive and fractional with Hurst parameter $H \in (\frac{1}{4}, 1)$. We assume that continuous observation is possible. The main tools are ergodic theorem and Malliavin calculus. As a by-product, we derive a maximum inequality for Skorohod integrals, which plays an important role to obtain the strong consistency of the least squares estimator.
We consider the last zero crossing time $T_{μ,t}$ of a Brownian motion, with drift $μ\neq 0$ in the time interval $[0, t]$. We prove the large deviation principle of $\{T_{μ\sqrt r t} : r > 0 \}$ as $r$ tends to infinity. Moreover, motivated by the results on moderate deviations in the literature, we also prove a class of large deviation principles for the same random variables with different scalings, which are governed by the same rate function. Finally we compare some aspects of the classical moderate deviation results, and the results in this paper.
