Consider the motion of a Brownian particle in two or more dimensions, whose coordinate processes are standard Brownian motions with zero drift initially, and then at some random/unobservable time, one of the coordinate processes gets a (known) non-zero drift permanently. Given that the position of the Brownian particle is being observed in real time, the problem is to detect the time at which a coordinate process gets the drift as accurately as possible. We solve this problem in the most uncertain scenario when the random/unobservable time is (i) exponentially distributed and (ii) independent from the initial motion without drift. The solution is expressed in terms of a stopping time that minimises the probability of a false early detection and the expected delay of a missed late detection. To our knowledge this is the first time that such a problem has been solved exactly in the literature.
In this paper we resolve an open problem proposed by Lai, Poor, Xin, and Georgiadis (2011, IEEE Transactions on Information Theory). Consider a sequence of Brownian Motions with unknown drift equal to one or zero, which we may be observed one at a time. We give a procedure for finding, as quickly as possible, a process which is a Brownian Motion with nonzero drift. This original quickest search problem, in which the filtration itself is dependent on the observation strategy, is reduced to a single filtration impulse control and optimal stopping problem, which is in turn reduced to an optimal s…
In the classical quickest detection problem, one must detect as quickly as possible when a Brownian motion without drift "changes" into a Brownian motion with positive drift. The change occurs at an unknown "disorder" time with exponential distribution. There is a penalty for declaring too early that the change has occurred, and a cost for late detection proportional to the time between occurrence of the change and the time when the change is declared. Here, we consider the case where there is also a cost for observing the process. This stochastic control problem can be formulated using either…
By using the law of the excursions of Brownian motion with drift, we find the distribution of the $n-$th passage time of Brownian motion through a straight line $S(t)= a + bt.$ In the special case when $b = 0,$ we extend the result to a space-time transformation of Brownian motion.
We derive integral formulas, involving the Airy function, for moments of the time a two-sided Brownian motion with parabolic drift attains its maximum.
The d-inverse is a generalized notion of inverse of a stochastic process having a certain tendency of increasing expectations. Scaling limit of the d-inverse of Brownian motion with functional drift is studied. Except for degenerate case, the class of possible scaling limits is proved to consist of the d-inverses of Brownian motion without drift, one with explosion in finite time, and one with power drift.
We study Brownian motion in a drifted Brownian potential in the subexponential regime. We prove that the annealed probability of deviating below the almost sure speed has a polynomial rate of decay and compute the exponent in this power law. This provides a continuous-time analogue of what Dembo, Peres and Zeitouni proved for the transient random walk in random environment. Our method takes a completely different route, making use of Lamperti's representation together with an iteration scheme.
In this paper we study the drifted Brownian meander, that is a Brownian motion starting from $ u $ and subject to the condition that $ \min_{ 0\leq z \leq t} B(z)> v $ with $ u > v $. The limiting process for $ u \downarrow v $ is analyzed and the sufficient conditions for its construction are given. We also study the distribution of the maximum of the meander with drift and the related first-passage times. The representation of the meander endowed with a drift is provided and extends the well-known result of the driftless case. The last part concerns the drifted excursion process the distribu…
We study the Bayesian problems of detecting a change in the drift rate of an observable diffusion process with linear and exponential penalty costs for a detection delay. The optimal times of alarms are found as the first times at which the weighted likelihood ratios hit stochastic boundaries depending on the current observations. The proof is based on the reduction of the initial problems into appropriate three-dimensional optimal stopping problems and the analysis of the associated parabolic-type free-boundary problems. We provide closed form estimates for the value functions and the boundar…
In this paper, we obtain an explicit representation of the transition density of the one-dimensional skew Brownian motion with (a constant drift and) two semipermeable barriers. Moreover we propose a rejection method to simulate this density in an exact way.
In this paper we consider a (reflected) Brownian motion with broken drift hitting a random boundary. Some dedicated calculations allow us to obtain the formula on the joint Laplace transform of the hitting time and hitting position. These develop the research on first rendezvous times of (reflected) Brownian motion and compound Poisson-type processes by Perry et al. (2004).
In this paper, using an algorithm based on the retrospective rejection sampling scheme, we propose an exact simulation of a Brownian diffusion whose drift admits several jumps. We treat explicitly and extensively the case of two jumps, providing numerical simulations. Our main contribution is to manage the technical diffculty due to the presence of two jumps thanks to a new explicit expression of the transition density of the skew Brownian motion with two semipermeable barriers and a constant drift.
In this article, we derive the explicit transition density functions of skew Brownian motion (SBM in abbreviation) with two-valued drift for all $t>0$. As an important step of this result, it is also shown in this paper that SBM with two-valued drift is a strong Markov process by finding its symmetrizing measure and canonical scale function, from which one can tell what values of the drift make such a process transient or recurrent.
Explicit formulae for the densities of the first hitting times to the sphere of Brownian motions with drifts are given. We need to consider the joint distributions of the first hitting times to the sphere and the hitting positions of the standard Brownian motion and explicit expression for their Laplace transforms are given, which are different from the known formulae in the literature and are of independnt interest.
We establish a small time large deviation principle and a Varadhan type asymptotics for Brownian motion with singular drift on $\bR^d$ with $d\geq 3$ whose infinitesimal generator is $\frac12 Δ+ μ\cdot \nabla$, where each $μ_i$ of $μ= (μ_1, \cdots, μ_d)$ is a measure in some suitable Kato class.
Many properties of Brownian motion on spaces with varying dimension (BMVD in abbreviation) have been explored in [5]. In this paper, we study Brownian motion with drift on spaces with varying dimension (BMVD with drift in abbreviation). Such a process can be conveniently defined by a regular Dirichlet form that is not necessarily symmetric. The drift term is in some type of $L^{p}$ space with $p$ depending on the region of the state space. We show BMVD with drift can be related to a BMVD without drift via Girsanov transform. Through the method of Duhamel's principle, it is established in this …
A famous result of Orey and Taylor gives the Hausdorff dimension of the set of fast times, that is the set of points where linear Brownian motion moves faster than according to the law of iterated logarithm. In this paper we examine what happens to the set of fast times if a variable drift is added to linear Brownian motion. In particular, we will show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of fast times cannot be decreased by adding a function to Brownian motion.
Strongly consistent and asymptotically normal estimators of the Hurst index and volatility parameters of solutions of stochastic differential equations with polynomial drift are proposed. The estimators are based on discrete observations of the underlying processes.
We study the maximum of a Brownian motion with a parabolic drift; this is a random variable that often occurs as a limit of the maximum of discrete processes whose expectations have a maximum at an interior point. We give series expansions and integral formulas for the distribution and the first two moments, together with numerical values to high precision.
In this paper, high-order moment, even exponential moment, estimates are established for the Hölder norm of solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion whose drifts are measurable and have linear growth. As applications, we first study the weak uniqueness of solutions to fractional stochastic differential equations. Moreover, combining our estimates and the Fourier transform, we establish the existence of density of solutions to equations with irregular drifts.
In this paper, we will first give the numerical simulation of the sub-fractional Brownian motion through the relation of fractional Brownian motion instead of its representation of random walk. In order to verify the rationality of this simulation, we propose a practical estimator associated with the LSE of the drift parameter of mixed sub-fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, and illustrate the asymptotical properties according to our method of simulation when the Hurst parameter $H>1/2$.
An analog of the Trotter formula for the Arratia flow is presented. Perturbations of the Brownian web by mappings associated with an ordinary differential equation with a smooth right part are considered and proved to be convergent exclusively in the weak sense. The flow obtained as a limit is the Arratia flow with drift.
Consider the motion of a Brownian particle in three dimensions, whose two spatial coordinates are standard Brownian motions with zero drift, and the remaining (unknown) spatial coordinate is a standard Brownian motion with a non-zero drift. Given that the position of the Brownian particle is being observed in real time, the problem is to detect as soon as possible and with minimal probabilities of the wrong terminal decisions, which spatial coordinate has the non-zero drift. We solve this problem in the Bayesian formulation, under any prior probabilities of the non-zero drift being in any of t…
In this paper we prove the existence of strong solutions to a SDE with a generalized drift driven by a multidimensional fractional Brownian motion for small Hurst parameters H<1/2. Here the generalized drift is given as the local time of the unknown solution process, which can be considered an extension of the concept of a skew Brownian motion to the case of fractional Brownian motion. Our approach for the construction of strong solutions is new and relies on techniques from Malliavin calculus combined with a "local time variational calculus" argument.
We investigate the tail distribution of the first exit time of Brownian motion with drift from a cone and find its exact asymptotics for a large class of cones. Our results show in particular that its exponential decreasing rate is a function of the distance between the drift and the cone, whereas the polynomial part in the asymptotics depends on the position of the drift with respect to the cone and its polar cone, and reflects the local geometry of the cone at the point where the drift is orthogonally projected.
We solve an optimal stopping problem where the underlying diffusion is Brownian motion on $\bf R$ with a positive drift changing at zero. It is assumed that the drift $μ_1$ on the negative side is smaller than the drift $μ_2$ on the positive side. The main observation is that if $μ_2-μ_1>1/2$ then there exists values of the discounting parameter for which it is not optimal to stop in the vicinity of zero where the drift changes. However, when the discounting gets bigger the stopping region becomes connected and contains zero. This is in contrast with results concerning optimal stopping of skew…
We study interacting systems of linear Brownian motions whose drift vector at every time point is determined by the relative ranks of the coordinate processes at that time. Our main objective has been to study the long range behavior of the spacings between the Brownian motions arranged in increasing order. For finitely many Brownian motions interacting in this manner, we characterize drifts for which the family of laws of the vector of spacings is tight, and show its convergence to a unique stationary joint distribution given by independent exponential distributions with varying means. We als…
Let (B^{(1)}_t ;B^{(2)}_t ;B^{(3)}_t + μt) be a three-dimensional Brownian motion with drift μ, starting at the origin. Then X_t = ||(B^{(1)}_t ;B^{(2)}_t ;B^{(3)}_t +μt)||, its distance from the starting point, is a diffusion with many applications. We investigate the distribution of the supremum of (X_t), give an infinite-series formula for its density and an exact estimate by elementary functions.
In this paper we consider the iterated Brownian motion $ ^{μ_1}_{μ_2}\!I(t) = B_1^{μ_1} ( | B_{2}^{μ_2} (t)|) $ where $B_j^{μ_j} , j=1,2$ are two independent Brownian motions with drift $μ_j$. Here we study the last zero crossing of $ ^{μ_1}_{μ_2}\!I(t) $ and for this purpose we derive the last zero-crossing distribution of the drifted Brownian motion. We derive also the joint distribution of the last zero crossing before $ t $ and of the first passage time through the zero level of a Brownian motion with drift $ μ$ after $ t $. All these results permit us to derive explicit formulas for ${^I_…
Consider a random walker on the nonnegative lattice, moving in continuous time, whose positive transition intensity is proportional to the time the walker spends at the origin. In this way, the walker is a jump process with a stochastic and adapted jump intensity. We show that, upon Brownian scaling, the sequence of such processes converges to Brownian motion with inert drift (BMID). BMID was introduced by Frank Knight in 2001 and generalized by White in 2007. This confirms a conjecture of Burdzy and White in 2008 in the one-dimensional setting.
We study reflecting Brownian motion with drift constrained to a wedge in the plane. Our first set of results provide necessary and sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of a solution to the corresponding submartingale problem with drift, and show that its solution possesses the Markov and Feller properties. Next, we study a version of the problem with absorption at the vertex of the wedge. In this case, we provide a condition for existence and uniqueness of a solution to the problem and some results on the probability of the vertex being reached.
Consider a negatively drifted one dimensional Brownian motion starting at positive initial position, its first hitting time to 0 has the inverse Gaussian law. Moreover, conditionally on this hitting time, the Brownian motion up to that time has the law of a 3- dimensional Bessel bridge. In this paper, we give a generalization of this result to a family of Brownian motions with interacting drifts, indexed by the vertices of a conductance network. The hitting times are equal in law to the inverse of a random potential that appears in the analysis of a self-interacting process called the Vertex R…
In this paper we obtain a Wiener-Hopf type factorization for a real-valued arithmetic Brownian motion with time-dependent drift and volatility. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the very first step towards realizing the objective of deriving Wiener-Hopf type factorizations for (real-valued) time-inhomogeneous Levy processes. In order to prove our main theorem, we derive some new results regarding time-inhomogeneous noisy Wiener-Hopf factorization. We demonstrate that in the special case of the arithmetic Brownian motion with constant drift and volatility our main result agrees with c…
Let $B^{H}$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$, $f:[0,1]\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{d}$ a Borel function, and $E\subset[0,1]$, $F\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$ are given Borel sets. The focus of this paper is on hitting probabilities of the fractional Brownian motion $B^{H}$ with the deterministic drift $f$. It aims to highlight the role of the regularity properties of the drift $f$ as well as that of the dimension of $E$ in determining the upper and lower bounds of $\mathbb{P}\{(B^H+f)(E)\cap F\neq \emptyset \}$ for $F$ a subset of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and also fo…
In this note we consider the time of the collision $τ$ for $n$ independent Brownian motions $X^1_t,...,X_t^n$ with drifts $a_1,...,a_n$, each starting from $x=(x_1,...,x_n)$, where $x_1<...<x_n$. We show the exact asymptotics of $P_x(τ>t) = C h(x)t^{-α}e^{-γt}(1 + o(1))$ as $t\to\infty$ and identify $C,h(x),α,γ$ in terms of the drifts.
Fractional equations governing the distribution of reflecting drifted Brownian motions are presented. The equations are expressed in terms of tempered Riemann--Liouville type derivatives. For these operators a Marchaud-type form is obtained and a Riesz tempered fractional derivative is examined, together with its Fourier transform.
We study fractal properties of the image and the graph of Brownian motion in $\R^d$ with an arbitrary c{à}dl{à}g drift $f$. We prove that the Minkowski (box) dimension of both the image and the graph of $B+f$ over $A\subseteq [0,1]$ are a.s.\ constants. We then show that for all $d\geq 1$ the Minkowski dimension of $(B+f)(A)$ is at least the maximum of the Minkowski dimension of $f(A)$ and that of $B(A)$. We also prove analogous results for the graph. For linear Brownian motion, if the drift $f$ is continuous and $A=[0,1]$, then the corresponding inequality for the graph is actually an equalit…
We study a scaled version of a two-parameter Brownian penalization model introduced by Roynette-Vallois-Yor in arXiv:math/0511102. The original model penalizes Brownian motion with drift $h\in\mathbb{R}$ by the weight process ${\big(\exp(νS_t):t\geq 0\big)}$ where $ν\in\mathbb{R}$ and $\big(S_t:t\geq 0\big)$ is the running maximum of the Brownian motion. It was shown there that the resulting penalized process exhibits three distinct phases corresponding to different regions of the $(ν,h)$-plane. In this paper, we investigate the effect of penalizing the Brownian motion concurrently with scalin…
We study the long-range asymptotic behavior for an out-of-equilibrium countable one-dimensional system of Brownian particles interacting through their rank-dependent drifts. Focusing on the semi-infinite case, where only the leftmost particle gets a constant drift to the right, we derive and solve the corresponding one- sided Stefan (free-boundary) equations. Via this solution we explicitly determine the limiting particle-density profile as well as the asymptotic trajectory of the leftmost particle. While doing so we further establish stochastic domination and convergence to equilibrium result…
Consider the $λ$-Green function and the $λ$-Poisson kernel of a Lipschitz domain $U\subset \mathbb H^n=\left\{x\in\mathbb R^n:x_n>0\right\}$ for hyperbolic Brownian motion with drift. We provide several relationships that facilitate studying those objects and explain somehow theirs nature. As an application, we yield uniform estimates in case of sets of the form $S_{a,b}=\{x\in\mathbb H^n:x_n>a, x_1\in(0,b)\}$, $a,b>0$, $a,b>0$, which covers and extends existing results of that kind.
We raise a question on whether a dynamical system driven by Markov process is Markovian, for which we are able to propose a criterion and examples of positive case. This investigation leads us to develop (i) a general construction of intertwining dual via Liggett duality, and (ii) a realization of $Λ$-linked coupling in a form of dynamical system. We show this construction of intertwining dual and $Λ$-linked coupling for an $n$-dimensional drifting Brownian motion when it is a characteristic diffusion. In particular, it includes an extension of Pitman's $2M-W$ theorem by Rogers and Pitman as a…
We derive the probability density function of the positive occupation time of one-dimensional Brownian motion with two-valued drift. Long time asymptotics of the density are also computed. We use the result to describe the transitional probability density function of a general N-dimensional system of stochastic differential equations representing stochastically perturbed sliding motion of a discontinuous, piecewise-smooth vector field on short time frames. A description of the density at larger times is obtained via an asymptotic expansion of the Fokker-Planck equation.
We derive the strong consistency of the least squares estimator for the drift coefficient of a fractional stochastic differential system. The drift coeffcient is one-sided dissipative Lipschitz and the driving noise is additive and fractional with Hurst parameter $H \in (\frac{1}{4}, 1)$. We assume that continuous observation is possible. The main tools are ergodic theorem and Malliavin calculus. As a by-product, we derive a maximum inequality for Skorohod integrals, which plays an important role to obtain the strong consistency of the least squares estimator.
We consider the last zero crossing time $T_{μ,t}$ of a Brownian motion, with drift $μ\neq 0$ in the time interval $[0, t]$. We prove the large deviation principle of $\{T_{μ\sqrt r t} : r > 0 \}$ as $r$ tends to infinity. Moreover, motivated by the results on moderate deviations in the literature, we also prove a class of large deviation principles for the same random variables with different scalings, which are governed by the same rate function. Finally we compare some aspects of the classical moderate deviation results, and the results in this paper.
This paper deals with the rate of convergence in 1-Wasserstein distance of the marginal law of a Brownian motion with drift conditioned not to have reached 0 towards the Yaglom limit of the process. In particular it is shown that, for a wide class of initial measures including Dirac measures and probability measures with compact support, the Wasserstein distance decays asymptotically as 1/t. Likewise, this speed of convergence is recovered for the convergence of marginal laws conditioned not to be absorbed up to a horizon time towards the Bessel-$3$ process, when the horizon time tends to infi…
We study the 'Up the River' problem formulated by Aldous (2002), where a unit drift is distributed among a finite collection of Brownian particles on $ \mathbb{R}_+ $, which are annihilated once they reach the origin. Starting $ K $ particles at $ x=1 $, we prove a conjecture of Aldous (2002) that the 'push-the-laggard' strategy of distributing the drift asymptotically (as $ K\to\infty $) maximizes the total number of surviving particles, with approximately $ \frac{4}{\sqrtπ} K^{1/2} $ surviving particles. We further establish the hydrodynamic limit of the particle density, in terms of a two-p…
In this paper, we study a class of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>\ff 1 2$. The drift term of the equation is locally Lipschitz and unbounded in the neighborhood of $0$. We show the existence, uniqueness and positivity of the solutions. The estimations of moments, including the negative power moments, are given. Based on these estimations, strong convergence of the positivity preserving drift-implicit Euler-type scheme is proved, and optimal convergence rate is obtained. By using Lamperti transformation, we show th…
We give a new proof for a Ray-Knight representation of Feller's branching diffusion with logistic growth in terms of the local times of a reflected Brownian motion $H$ with a drift that is affine linear in the local time accumulated by $H$ at its current level. In \cite{LPW}, such a representation was obtained by an approximation through Harris paths that code the genealogies of particle systems. The present proof is purely in terms of stochastic analysis, and is inspired by previous work of Norris, Rogers and Williams \cite{NRW}.
In this paper we study weak solutions for the following type of stochastic differential equation \[ dX_{t}=dW_{t}+b(t, X_{t})dt, \quad t\ge s, \quad X_{s}=x, \] where $b: [0,\infty) \times \mathbb{R}^{d} \to \mathbb{R}^{d}$ is a measurable drift, $W=(W_{t})_{t \ge 0}$ is a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and $(s,x)\in [0,\infty) \times \mathbb{R}^{d}$ is the starting point. A solution $X=(X_t)_{t \ge s}$ for the above SDE is called a Brownian motion with time-dependent drift $b$ starting from $(s,x)$. Under the assumption that $|b|$ belongs to the forward-Kato class $\mathcal{F} \mathcal{K}_{d…
Motivated by recent developments on random polymer models we propose a generalisation of reflected Brownian motion (RBM) in a polyhedral domain. This process is obtained by replacing the singular drift on the boundary by a continuous one which depends, via a potential U, on the position of the process relative to the domain. It was shown by Harrison and Williams (1987) that RBM in a polyhe- dral domain has an invariant measure in product form if a certain skew-symmetry condition holds. We show that (modulo technical assumptions) the generalised RBM has an invariant measure in product form if (…
