For $N \geq 5$ and $a>0$, we consider the following semipositone problem \begin{align*} Δ^2 u= g(x)f_a(u) \text { in } \mathbb{R}^N, \, \text{ and } \, u \in \mathcal{D}^{2,2}(\mathbb{R}^N),\ \ \ \qquad \quad \mathrm{(SP)} \end{align*} where $g \in L^1_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is an indefinite weight function, $f_a:\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ is a continuous function that satisfies $f_a(t)=-a$ for $t \in \mathbb{R}^-$, and $\mathcal{D}^{2,2}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is the completion of $\mathcal{C}_c^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ with respect to $(\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} (Δu)^2)^{1/2}$. For $f_a$ satisfying subcritical nonlinearity and a weaker Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz type growth condition, we find the existence of $a_1>0$ such that for each $a \in (0,a_1)$, (SP) admits a mountain pass solution. Further, we show that the mountain pass solution is positive if $a$ is near zero. For the positivity, we derive uniform regularity estimates of the solutions of (SP) for certain ranges in $(0,a_1)$, relying on the Riesz potential of the biharmonic operator.
This paper concerns the existence of a solution for the following class of semipositone quasilinear problems \begin{equation*} \left \{ \begin{array}{rclcl} -Δ_p u = h(x)(f(u)-a),\ & u > 0 & \mbox{in} & \mathbb{R}^N, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $1<p<N$, $a>0$, $ f:[0,+\infty) \to [0,+\infty)$ is a function with subcritical growth and $f(0)=0$, while $h:\mathbb{R}^N \to (0,+\infty)$ is a continuous function that satisfies some technical conditions. We prove via nonsmooth critical points theory and comparison principle, that a solution exists for $a$ small enough. We also provide a…
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$, $N\geq1$, be a smooth bounded domain, and let $m:Ω\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ be a possibly sign-changing function. We investigate the existence of positive solutions for the semipositone problem $-Δu=λm(x)(f(u)-k)$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ on $\partialΩ$, where $λ,k>0$ and $f$ is either sublinear at infinity with $f(0)=0$, or $f$ has a singularity at $0$. We prove the existence of a positive solution for certain ranges of $λ$ provided that the negative part of $m$ is suitably small. Our main tool is the sub-supersolutions method, combined with some rescaling properties.
In this paper we prove the existence of at least one positive solution for the nonlocal semipositone problem \[ \displaystyle \left\{\begin{array}{rcll} (-Δ)_p^s(u) &=& λf(u) \qquad & \text{in} \ \ Ω \\u &=& 0 & \text{in} \ \ \mathbb{R}^N -Ω, \end{array}\right. \] whenever $λ>0$ is a sufficiently small parameter. Here $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^N$ a bounded domain with $C^{1,1}$ boundary, $2\leqslant p <N$, $s\in (0,1)$ and $f$ superlineal and subcritical. We prove that if $λ>0$ is chosen sufficiently small the associated Energy Functional to the problem has a mountain pass structure and, therefor…
In this paper we prove the existence of at least one positive solution for nonlocal semipositone problem of the type $$ (P_λ^μ)\left\{ \begin{array}{lll} (-Δ)^s u&=& λ(u^{q}-1)+μu^r \mbox{ in } Ω\\ u&>&0 \mbox{ in } Ω\\ u&\equiv &0 \mbox{ on }{\mathbb R^N\setminusΩ}. \end{array}\right. $$ when the positive parameters $λ$ and $μ$ belongs to certain range. Here $Ω\subset\mathbb R^N$ is assumed to be a bounded open set with smooth boundary, $s\in (0,1), N> 2s$ and $0<q<1<r\leq \frac{N+2s}{N- 2s}.$ The proof relies on the construction of a positive subsolution for $(P_λ^0)$ for $λ>λ_0.$ Now for ea…
We obtain existence and multiplicity results for quasilinear fourth order elliptic equations on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ with sign-changing potential. Our results generalize some recent results on this problem.
We consider a class of fourth-order elliptic equations of Kirchhoff type with critical growth in $\mathbb{R}^N$. By using constrained minimization in the Nehari manifold, we establish sufficient conditions for the existence of nodal (that is, sign-changing) solutions.
In this paper, we study the following fourth order elliptic problem $$ Δ^2 u=(1+εK(x)) u^{2^*-1}, \quad x\in \mathbb{R}^N $$ where $2^*=\frac{2N}{N-4}$,$N\geq5$, $ ε>0$. We prove that the existence of two peaks solutions for the above problem, if $K(x)$ has two critical points satisfying certain conditions, provided $ε$ is small enough.
In this paper we study generation results in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$ for the fourth order Schrödinger type operator with unbounded coefficients of the form $$A=a^{2} Δ^2+V^{2}$$ where $a(x)=1+|x|^α$ and $V=|x|^β$ with $α>0$ and $β>(α-2)^+$. We obtain that $(-A,D(A))$ generates an analytic strongly continuous semigroup in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$ for $N\geq5$. Moreover, the maximal domain $D(A)$ can be characterized for $N>8$ by the weighted Sobolev space \[ D_2(A)=\{u\in H^{4}(\mathbb{R}^N)\,:\,V^{2}u\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^N), |x|^{2α-h}D^{4-h}u\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^N) \text{ for } h=0,1,2,3,4\}. \]
In this paper, we study the mixed dispersion fourth order nonlinear Helmholtz equation $Δ^2 u -βΔu + αu= Γ|u|^{p-2} u$ in $\mathbb R^N$ for positive, bounded and $\mathbb Z^N$-periodic functions $Γ$. Using the dual method of Evequoz and Weth, we find solutions to this equation and establish some of their qualitative properties.
In this paper, we establish the linear profile decomposition for the one dimensional fourth order Schrödinger equation $$ iu_t-μΔu+Δ^2u=0, t\in\mathbb{R}, x\in\mathbb{R}, u(0,x)=f(x)\in L^2, $$ where $μ\ge 0$. As an application, we establish a dichotomy result on the existence of extremals to the symmetric Schrödinger Strichartz inequality.
In this paper we study the biharmonic operator perturbed by an inverse fourth-order potential. In particular, we consider the operator $A=Δ^2-V=Δ^2-c|x|^{-4}$ where $c$ is any constant such that $c<\left(\frac{N(N-4)}{4}\right)^2$. The semigroup generated by $-A$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$, $N\geq5$, extrapolates to a bounded holomorphic $C_0$-semigroup on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^N)$ for $p\in [p^{'}_0,p_0]$ where $p_0=\frac{2N}{N-4}$ and $p_0^{'}$ is its dual exponent. Furthermore, we study the boundedness of the Riesz transform $ΔA^{-1/2}$ on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^N)$ for all $p\in(p_0^{'},2]$.
In this paper, we consider the focusing mass-critical nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation. We prove that blowup solutions to this equation with initial data in $H^γ(\mathbb{R}^d), 5\leq d \leq 7, \frac{56-3d+\sqrt{137d^2+1712d+3136}}{2(2d+32)} <γ<2$ concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blowup time. This extends the work in \cite{ZhuYangZhang11} where Zhu-Yang-Zhang studied the formation of singularity for the equation with rough initial data in $\mathbb{R}^4$. We also prove that the equation is globally well-posed with initial data $u_0 \in H^γ(\mathbb{R}^d), 5\leq …
We are concerned on the fourth-order elliptic equation \begin{equation}\tag{$P_λ$} \left\{ \begin{array}[c]{ll} Δ^2 u- Δu + V(x)u -λΔ[ρ(u^2)]ρ'(u^2)u= f(u)\, \, \mbox{in} \, \, \mathbb{R}^N, & u\in W^{2,2}(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{array} \right. \end{equation} where $Δ^2 = Δ(Δ)$ is the biharmonic operator, $3\leq N\leq 6$, the radially symmetric potential $V$ may change sign and $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^N}V(x)=-\infty$ is allowed. If $f$ satisfies a type of nonquadracity and monotonicity conditions and $ρ$ is a suitable smooth function, we prove, via variational approach, the existence of a radially symme…
We consider the fourth-order Schrödinger equation $$ i\partial_tu+Δ^2 u+μΔu+λ|u|^αu=0, $$ where $α>0,μ=\pm1$ or $0$ and $λ\in\mathbb{C}$. Firstly, we prove local well-posedness in $H^4\left(\R^N\right)$ in both $H^4$ subcritical and critical case: $α>0$, $(N-8)α\leq8$. Then, for any given compact set $K\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, we construct $H^4(\R^N)$ solutions that are defined on $(-T, 0)$ for some $T>0$, and blow up exactly on $K$ at $t=0$.
Focusing on the fourth-order wave equation $u_{tt} + Δ^2 u + f(u)= 0$, we prove the existence of ground state solutions $u=u(x+ct)$ for an optimal range of speeds $c\in\mathbb{R}^n$ and a variety of nonlinearities $f$.
This paper discusses the unique continuation principal of the solutions of the following perturbed fourth order elliptic differential operator $\mathcal{L}_{A,q}u=0$, where \[ \mathcal{L}_{A,q}(x,D)\ =\ \sum_{j=1}^nD^4_{x_j} + \sum_{j=1}^n A_jD_{x_j} + q, \qquad (A, q) \in W^{1,\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}^n) \times L^{\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}) \] whose principal term is not given by some integer power of the Laplacian operator. We derive some suitable Carleman estimates which is the main tool to prove the unique continuation principle. As a by-product, we also deduce some stability estimate and prove the…
In this paper, we consider a class of nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation, namely \[ \left\{ \begin{array}{rcl} i\partial_t u +Δ^2 u &=&-|u|^{ν-1} u, \quad 1+ \frac{8}{d}<ν<1+\frac{8}{d-4},\\ u(0)&=&u_0 \in H^γ(\mathbb{R}^d), \quad 5 \leq d \leq 11. \end{array} \right. \] Using the $I$-method combined with the interaction Morawetz inequality, we establish the global well-posedness and scattering in $H^γ(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with $γ(d,ν)<γ<2$ for some value $γ(d,ν)>0$.
In this paper, we are concerned with Liouville-type theorems for the nonlinear elliptic equation {equation*} Δ^2 u=|x|^a |u|^{p-1}u\;\ {in}\;\ Ω, {equation*}where $a \ge 0$, $p>1$ and $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an unbounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n \ge 5$. We prove Liouville-type theorems for solutions belonging to one of the following classes: stable solutions and finite Morse index solutions (whether positive or sign-changing). Our proof is based on a combination of the {\it Pohozaev-type identity}, {\it monotonicity formula} of solutions and a {\it blowing down} sequence, which is used …
We consider the Cauchy problem for the fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with derivative nonlinearity $(i\partial _t + Δ^2) u= \pm \partial (|u|^2u)$ on $\mathbb{R} ^d$, $d \ge 3$, with random initial data, where $\partial$ is a first order derivative with respect to the spatial variable, for example a linear combination of $\frac{\partial}{\partial x_1} , \, \dots , \, \frac{\partial}{\partial x_d}$ or $|\nabla |= \mathcal{F}^{-1}[|ξ| \mathcal{F}]$. We prove that almost sure local in time well-posedness, small data global in time well-posedness and scattering hold in $H^s(\mathbb{R}…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the fourth order cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (4NLS). The main goal of this paper is to prove low regularity well-posedness and mild ill-posedness for (4NLS). We prove three results. First, we show that (4NLS) is locally well-posed in $H^s\left(\mathbb{R}\right), s\geq -\frac{1}{2}$ using the Fourier restriction norm method. Second, we show that (4NLS) is globally well-posed in $H^s\left(\mathbb{R}\right),s\geq -\frac{1}{2}$. To prove this, we use the $I$-method with the correction term strategy presented in Colliander-Keel-Staffilani-Takaoka-Tao [7].…
In this paper, we consider the defocusing mass-critical nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation. Using the $I$-method combined with the interaction Morawetz estimate, we prove that the problem is globally well-posed in $H^γ(\mathbb{R}^d), 5\leq d\leq 7$ with $γ(d)<γ<2$, where $γ(5)=\frac{8}{5}, γ(6)=\frac{5}{3}$ and $γ(7)=\frac{13}{7}$.
We study the ground states of the following generalization of the Kirchhoff-Love functional, $$J_σ(u)=\int_Ω\dfrac{(Δu)^2}{2} - (1-σ)\int_Ωdet(\nabla^2u)-\int_ΩF(x,u),$$ where $Ω$ is a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with $C^{1,1}$ boundary and the nonlinearities involved are of sublinear type or superlinear with power growth. These critical points correspond to least-energy weak solutions to a fourth-order semilinear boundary value problem with Steklov boundary conditions depending on $σ$. Positivity of ground states is proved with different techniques according to the range of the pa…
Let $γ> 0\,$, $β> 0\,$, $α> 0$ and $0 < σN < 4$. In the present paper, we study, for $c > 0$ given, the constrained minimization problem \begin{equation*} \label{MinL2fixed} m(c):=\inf_{u\in S (c) }E(u), \end{equation*} where \begin{equation*} E (u):=\fracγ{2}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|Δu|^2\, dx -\fracβ{2}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|\nabla u|^2\, dx-\fracα{2σ+2}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|u|^{2σ+2}\, dx, \end{equation*} and \begin{equation*} S(c):=\left\{u\in H^2(\mathbb{R}^N):\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|u|^{2}\, dx=c\right\}. \end{equation*} The aim of our study is twofold. On one hand, this minimization problem is relate…
We consider the low regularity behavior of the fourth order cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (4NLS) \begin{align*} \begin{cases} i\partial_tu+\partial_x^4u=\pm \vert u \vert^2u, \quad(t,x)\in \mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x)\in H^s\left(\mathbb{R}\right). \end{cases} \end{align*} In arXiv:1911.03253, the author showed that this equation is globally well-posed in $H^s, s\geq -\frac{1}{2}$ and ill-posedness in the sense that the solution map fails to be uniformly continuous for $-\frac{15}{14}<s<-\frac{1}{2}$. Therefore, $s=-\frac{1}{2}$ is the lowest regularity that can be handle…
We prove the decay in the energy space for the solution to the defocusing biharmonic Hartree-Fock equations with mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical Choquard-type nonlinearity in space dimension $d\geq3$. We treat both the free and the perturbed by a potential case. As a direct consequence, we obtain large-data scattering in $H^2(\mathbb R^d)^N, \, N\geq 1$.

We prove that the following pointwise inequality holds \begin{equation*} -Δu \ge \sqrt\frac{2}{(p+1)-c_n} |x|^{\frac{a}{2}} u^{\frac{p+1}{2}} + \frac{2}{n-4} \frac{|\nabla u|^2}{u} \ \ \text{in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^n \end{equation*} where $c_n:=\frac{8}{n(n-4)}$, for positive bounded solutions of the fourth order Hénon equation that is \begin{equation*} Δ^2 u = |x|^a u^p \ \ \ \ \text {in }\ \ \mathbb{R}^n \end{equation*} for some $a\ge0$ and $p>1$. Motivated by the Moser's proof of the Harnack's inequality as well as Moser iteration type arguments in the regularity theory, we develop an iteration a…
By using a suitable transform related to Sobolev inequality, we investigate the sharp constants and optimizers in radial space for the following weighted Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg-type inequalities: \begin{equation*} \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|x|^α|Δu|^2 dx \geq S^{rad}(N,α)\left(\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|x|^{-α}|u|^{p^*_α} dx\right)^{\frac{2}{p^*_α}}, \quad u\in C^\infty_c(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{equation*} where $N\geq 3$, $4-N<α<2$, $p^*_α=\frac{2(N-α)}{N-4+α}$. Then we obtain the explicit form of the unique (up to scaling) radial positive solution $U_{λ,α}$ to the weighted fourth-order Hardy (for $α>0$) or…
This paper deals with a class of initial-boundary value problems for nonlinear fourth order parabolic systems with time dependent coefficients in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N, N\geq 2$. Introducing suitable conditions on the source terms, we obtain a time interval $[0,T],$ where the solution remains bounded by deriving a lower bound $T$ of $t^*$. Moreover, we establish conditions on the shape of the spatial domain and on data sufficient to guarantee that the solution blows up in finite time $t^*$, deriving an upper bound for $t^*$.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the cubic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (4NLS) on the circle. In particular, we prove global well-posedness of the renormalized 4NLS in negative Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s > -\frac{1}{3}$, with enhanced uniqueness. The proof consists of two separate arguments. (i) We first prove global existence in $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s > -\frac{9}{20}$, via the short-time Fourier restriction norm method. By following the argument in Guo-Oh for the cubic NLS, this also leads to non-existence of solutions for the (non-renormalized) 4NLS in negative Sobo…
This paper deals with the Cauchy problem associated to the nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation with isotropic and anisotropic mixed dispersion. This model is given by the equation $i\partial _{t}u+εΔu+δA u+λ|u|^αu=0,$ $x\in \mathbb{R}^{n},$ $t\in \mathbb{R},$ where $A$ represents either the operator $Δ^2$ (isotropic dispersion) or $\sum_{i=1}^d\partial_{x_ix_ix_ix_i},\ 1\leq d<n$ (anisotropic dispersion), and $α, ε, λ$ are given real parameters. We obtain local and global well-posedness results in spaces of initial data with low regularity, such as weak-$L^p$ spaces. Our analysis also …
We consider the fourth order Schrödinger operator $H=Δ^2+V(x)$ in three dimensions with real-valued potential $V$. Let $H_0=Δ^2$, if $V$ decays sufficiently and there are no eigenvalues or resonances in the absolutely continuous spectrum of $H$ then the wave operators $W_{\pm}= s\,-\,\lim_{t\to \pm \infty} e^{itH}e^{-itH_0}$ extend to bounded operators on $L^p(\mathbb R^3)$ for all $1<p<\infty$.
We deal with nonlinear weighted biharmonic problem in the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^{4}$. The weight is of logarithm type. The nonlinearity is critical in view of Adam's inequalities in the weighted Sobolev space $W^{2,2}_{0}(B,w)$. We prove the existence of non trivial solutions via the critical point theory. The main difficulty is the loss of compactness due to the critical exponential growth of the nonlinear term $f$. We give a new growth condition and we point out its importance for checking the Palais-Smale compactness condition.
We consider the following class of focusing $L^2$-supercritical fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equations \[ i\partial_t u - Δ^2 u + μΔu = - |u|^αu, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^N, \] where $N\geq 2$, $μ\geq 0$, and $\frac{8}{N}<α<α^*$ with $α^*:=\frac{8}{N-4}$ if $N\geq 5$ and $α^*=\infty$ if $N\leq 4$. By using the localized Morawetz estimates and radial Sobolev embedding, we establish the energy scattering below the ground state threshold for the equation with radially symmetric initial data. We also address the existence of finite time blow-up radial solutions to the equ…
