In this paper, we mainly consider the speed selection problem for the classical Lotka-Volterra competition system. For the first time, we propose a sufficient and necessary condition for this long-standing problem from a new point of view. Moreover, our results can also reveal the essence of the linearly selected problem for the monostable dynamical system from the observation of the decay rate of the minimal traveling wave solution.
In this paper we derive quantitative conditions under which a compactly supported drift term depending on the direction of propagation blocks a traveling wave solution or lets it pass almost unchanged. We give explicit conditions on the drift term for blocking as well as almost unchanged propagation in one spacial dimension.
The propagation of fronts in the Fisher-Kolmogorov equation with spatially varying diffusion coefficients is studied. Using coordinate changes, WKB approximations, and multiple scales analysis, we provide an analytic framework that describes propagation of the front up to the minimum of the diffusion coefficient. We also present results showing the behavior of the front after it passes the minimum. In each case, we show that standard traveling coordinate frames do not properly describe front propagation. Lastly, we provide numerical simulations to support our analysis and to show, that around …
For scalar reaction-diffusion equations, a traveling wave is a front which transforms a higher energy state to a lower energy state. The same is true for a system of equations with a gradient structure. At the core of this phenomenon, the wave propagation results in an invasion of an equilibrium state from a different one. This paper is aimed at two questions: (i) Can reaction-diffusion waves exhibit front propagation in both directions between two distinct equilibrium states? (ii) The co-existence of traveling fronts and pulses; a subject rarely studied. Working on a FitzHugh-Nagumo model wit…
It is proved that for the 2-dimensional case with random shear flow of the G-equation model with strain term, the strain term reduces the front propagation. Also an improvement of the main result by Armstrong-Souganidis is provided.
We study front propagation phenomena for a large class of nonlocal KPP-type reaction-diffusion equations in oscillatory environments, which model various forms of population growth with periodic dependence. The nonlocal diffusion is an anisotropic integro-differential operator of order $α\in (0,2)$.
We consider the propagation of a flame front in a solid medium with a periodic structure. The model is governed by a free boundary system for the pair" temperature-front. "The front's normal velocity depends on the temperature via a (degenerate) Arrhenius kinetic. It also depends on the front's mean curvature. We show the existence of travelling wave solutions for the full system and consider their homogenization as the period tends to zero. We analyze the curvature effects on the homogenization and obtain a continuum of limiting waves parametrized by the limiting ratio "curvature coefficient/…
We show a result on propagation of the anisotropic Gelfand--Shilov wave front set for linear operators with Schwartz kernel which is a Gelfand--Shilov ultradistribution of Beurling type. This anisotropic wave front set is parametrized by two positive parameters relating the space and frequency variables. The anisotropic Gelfand--Shilov wave front set of the Schwartz kernel of the operator is assumed to satisfy a graph type criterion. The result is applied to a class of evolution equations that generalizes the Schrödinger equation for the free particle. The Laplacian is replaced by a partial di…
We study existence and stability of travelling waves for nonlinear convection diffusion equations in the 1-D Euclidean space. The diffusion coefficient depends on the gradient in analogy with the p-Laplacian and may be degenerate. Unconditional stability is established with respect to initial data perturbations in the Lebesgue space of integrable functions.
These notes are dedicated to the analysis of the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations. After a brief synthesis of the results obtained in [4] related to the existence and the asymptotic stability of partially congested profiles associated to the soft congestion Navier-Stokes system, we present a first local well-posedness result for the one-dimensional free-congested Navier-Stokes equations.
We study the asymptotics of Allen-Cahn-type bistable reaction-diffusion equations which are additively perturbed by a stochastic forcing (time white noise). The conclusion is that the long time, large space behavior of the solutions is governed by an interface moving with curvature dependent normal velocity which is additively perturbed by time white noise. The result is global in time and does not require any regularity assumptions on the evolving front. The main tools are (i)~the notion of stochastic (pathwise) solution for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations with multiplicative rough (…
We study in this note the Fisher-KPP equation where the Laplacian is replaced by the generator of a Feller semigroup with slowly decaying kernel, an important example being the fractional Laplacian. Contrary to what happens in the standard Laplacian case, where the stable state invades the unstable one at constant speed, we prove here that invasion holds at an exponential in time velocity. These results provide a mathematically rigorous justification of numerous heuristics about this model.
We study the biological situation when an invading population propagates and replaces an existing population with different characteristics. For instance, this may occur in the presence of a vertically transmitted infection causing a cytoplasmic effect similar to the Allee effect (e.g. Wolbachia in Aedes mosquitoes): the invading dynamics we model is bistable. After quantification of the propagules, a second question of major interest is the invasive power. How far can such an invading front go, and what can stop it? We rigorously show that a heterogeneous environment inducing a strong enough …
In this paper we consider a bistable reaction-diffusion equation in unbounded domains and we investigate the existence of propagation phenomena, possibly partial, in some direction or, on the contrary, of blocking phenomena. We start by proving the well-posedness of the problem. Then we prove that when the domain has a decreasing cross section with respect to the direction of propagation there is complete propagation. Further, we prove that the wave can be blocked as it comes to an abrupt geometry change. Finally we discuss various general geometrical properties that ensure either partial or c…
We study spinodal decomposition and coarsening when initiated by localized disturbances in the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Spatio-temporal dynamics are governed by multi-stage invasion fronts. The first front invades a spinodal unstable equilibrium and creates a spatially periodic unstable pattern. Secondary fronts invade this unstable pattern and create a coarser pattern in the wake. We give linear predictions for speeds and wavenumbers in this process and show existence of corresponding nonlinear fronts. The existence proof is based on Conley index theory, a priori estimates, and Galerkin approx…
The current paper is devoted to the investigation of wave propagation phenomenon in reaction-diffusion equations with ignition type nonlinearity in time heterogeneous and random media. It is proven that such equations in time heterogeneous media admit transition fronts or generalized traveling wave solutions with time dependent profiles and that such equations in time random media admit generalized traveling wave solutions with random profiles. Important properties of generalized traveling wave solutions, including the boundedness of propagation speeds and the uniform decaying estimates of the…
In this paper, we study gradient decay estimates for solutions to the multi-dimensional Fisher-KPP equation with fractional diffusion. It is known that this equation exhibits exponentially advancing level sets with strong qualitative upper and lower bounds on the solution. However, little has been shown concerning the gradient of the solution. We prove that, under mild conditions on the initial data, the first and second derivatives of the solution obey a comparative exponential decay in time. We then use this estimate to prove a symmetrization result, which shows that the reaction front flatt…

In this paper we use the theory of viscosity solutions for Hamilton-Jacobi equations to study propagation phenomena in kinetic equations. We perform the hydrodynamic limit of some kinetic models thanks to an adapted WKB ansatz. Our models describe particles moving according to a velocity-jump process, and proliferating thanks to a reaction term of monostable type. The scattering operator is supposed to satisfy a maximum principle. When the velocity space is bounded, we show, under suitable hypotheses, that the phase converges towards the viscosity solution of some constrained Hamilton-Jacobi e…
In this paper, we study the existence and stability of travelling wave solutions of a kinetic reaction-transport equation. The model describes particles moving according to a velocity-jump process, and proliferating thanks to a reaction term of monostable type. The boundedness of the velocity set appears to be a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of positive travelling waves. The minimal speed of propagation of waves is obtained from an explicit dispersion relation. We construct the waves using a technique of sub- and supersolutions and prove their \eb{weak} stability in a we…
We study multiplicity of the supercritical traveling front solutions for scalar reaction-diffusion equations in infinite cylinders which invade a linearly unstable equilibrium. These equations are known to possess traveling wave solutions connecting an unstable equilibrium to the closest stable equilibrium for all speeds exceeding a critical value. We show that these are, in fact, the only traveling front solutions in the considered problems for sufficiently large speeds. In addition, we show that other traveling fronts connecting to the unstable equilibrium may exist in a certain range of the…
Motivated by tumor growth in Cancer Biology, we provide a complete analysis of existence and non-existence of invasive fronts for the reduced Gatenby--Gawlinski model \[ \partial_t U = U\{f(U)-dV\}, \qquad \partial_t V = \partial_x \{f(U)\,\partial_x V\} + r V f(V), \] where $f(u) = 1-u$ and the parameters $d,r$ are positive. Denoting by $(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ the traveling wave profile and by $(\mathcal{U}_\pm,\mathcal{V}_\pm)$ its asymptotic states at $\pm\infty$, we investigate existence in the regimes i) $d > 1$ (homogeneous invasion) : $(\mathcal{U}_-,\mathcal{V}_-) = (0,1)$, $(\math…
In this paper, we analyze the behavior of viscous shock profiles of one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a singular pressure law which encodes the effects of congestion. As the intensity of the singular pressure tends to 0, we show the convergence of these profiles towards free-congested traveling front solutions of a two-phase compressible-incompressible Navier-Stokes system and we provide a refined description of the profiles in the vicinity of the transition between the free domain and the congested domain. In the second part of the paper, we prove that the profiles are…
In this paper we present a mathematical theory and a numerical method to study the propagation of a three-dimensional (3-D) weak shock front into a polytropic gas in a uniform state and at rest, though the method can be extended to shocks moving into nonuniform flows. The theory is based on the use of 3-D kinematical conservation laws (KCL), which govern the evolution of a surface in general and a shock front in particular. The 3-D KCL, derived purely on geometrical considerations, form an under-determined system of conservation laws. In the present paper the 3-D KCL system is closed by using …
We consider a reaction-diffusion equation in narrow random channels. We approximate the generalized solution to this equation by the corresponding one on a random graph. By making use of large deviation analysis we study the asymptotic wave front propagation.
In this paper, we prove some qualitative properties of pushed fronts for the periodic reaction-diffusion-equation with general monostable nonlinearities. Especially, we prove the exponential behavior of pushed fronts when they are approaching their unstable state. The proof also allows us to get the exponential behavior of pulsating fronts with speed $c$ larger than the minimal speed. Through the exponential behavior, we finally prove the stability of pushed fronts.
We study front solutions of a system that models combustion in highly hydraulically resistant porous media. The spectral stability of the fronts is tackled by a combination of energy estimates and numerical Evans function computations. Our results suggest that there is a parameter regime for which there are no unstable eigenvalues. We use recent works about partially parabolic systems to prove that in the absence of unstable eigenvalues the fronts are convectively stable.
We investigate a general, local version of the cane toads equation, which models the spread of a population structured by unbounded motility. We use the thin-front limit approach of Evans and Souganidis in [Indiana Univ. Math. J., 1989] to obtain a characterization of the propagation in terms of both the linearized equation and a geometric front equation. In particular, we reduce the task of understanding the precise location of the front for a large class of equations to analyzing a much smaller class of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We are then able to give an explicit formula for the front loc…
We consider Scrödinger equations with real-valued smooth Hamiltonians, and non-smooth bounded pseudo-differential potentials, whose symbols may be not even differentiable. The well-posedness of the Cauchy problem is proved in the frame of the modulation spaces, and results of micro-local propagation of singularities are given in terms of Gabor wave front sets.
On dynamics of gasless combustion in slowly varying periodic media: periodic fronts, their stability and propagation-extinction-diffusion-reignition pattern
In this paper we investigate the long-term behaviour of solutions to the discrete Allen-Cahn equation posed on a two-dimensional lattice. We show that front-like initial conditions evolve towards a planar travelling wave modulated by a phaseshift $γ_l(t)$ that depends on the coordinate $l$ transverse to the primary direction of propagation. This direction is allowed to be general, but rational, generalizing earlier known results for the horizontal direction. We show that the behaviour of $γ$ can be asymptotically linked to the behaviour of a suitably discretized mean curvature flow. This allow…
The adaptation of biological species to their environment depends on their traits. When various biological processes occur (survival, reproduction, migration, etc.), the trait distribution may change with respect to time and space. In the context of invasions, when considering the evolution of a heritable trait that encodes the dispersive ability of individuals, the trait distribution develops a particular spatial structure that leads to the acceleration of the front propagation. That phenomenon is known as spatial sorting. Many biological examples can be cited like the bush cricket in Britain…
We study front propagation problems for forced mean curvature flows and their phase field variants that take place in stratified media, i.e., heterogeneous media whose characteristics do not vary in one direction. We consider phase change fronts in infinite cylinders whose axis coincides with the symmetry axis of the medium. Using the recently developed variational approaches, we provide a convergence result relating asymptotic in time front propagation in the diffuse interface case to that in the sharp interface case, for suitably balanced nonlinearities of Allen-Cahn type. The result is esta…
We study the stability and dynamics of traveling-front solutions of a modified Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation arising in the modeling of nanoscale ripple patterns that form when a nominally flat solid surface is bombarded with a broad ion beam at an oblique angle of incidence. Structurally, the linearized operators associated with these fronts have unstable essential spectrum---corresponding to instability of the spatially asymptotic states---and stable point spectrum---corresponding to stability of the transition profile of the front. We show that these waves are linearly orbitally asymptotic…
We consider a controlled reaction-diffusion equation, motivated by a pest eradication problem. Our goal is to derive a simpler model, describing the controlled evolution of a contaminated set. In this direction, the first part of the paper studies the optimal control of 1-dimensional traveling wave profiles. Using Stokes' formula, explicit solutions are obtained, which in some cases require measure-valued optimal controls. In the last section we introduce a family of optimization problems for a moving set. We show how these can be derived from the original parabolic problems, by taking a sharp…
We study invasion fronts in the FitzHugh--Nagumo equation in the oscillatory regime using singular perturbation techniques. Phenomenologically, localized perturbations of the unstable steady-state grow and spread, creating temporal oscillations whose phase is modulated spatially. The phase modulation appears to be selected by an invasion front that describes the behavior in the leading edge of the spreading process. We construct these invasion fronts for large regions of parameter space using singular perturbation techniques. Key ingredients are the construction of periodic orbits, their unsta…
We study propagation over $\mathbb{R}^d$ of the solution to a nonlocal nonlinear equation with anisotropic kernels, which can be interpretted as a doubly nonlocal reaction-diffusion equation of the Fisher--KPP-type. We prove that if the kernel of the nonlocal diffusion is exponentially integrable in a direction and if the initial condition decays in this direction faster than any exponential function, then the solution propagates at most linearly in time in that direction. Moreover, if both the kernel and the initial condition have the above properties in any direction (being, in general, anis…
We consider pattern-forming fronts in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with a traveling spatial heterogeneity which destabilizes, or quenches, the trivial ground state while progressing through the domain. We consider the regime where the heterogeneity propagates with speed $c$ just below the linear invasion speed of the pattern-forming front in the associated homogeneous system. In this situation, the front locks to the interface of the heterogeneity leaving a long intermediate state lying near the unstable ground state, possibly allowing for growth of perturbations. This manifests itself…
We describe acceleration of the front propagation for solutions to a class of monostable nonlinear equations with a nonlocal diffusion in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq1$. We show that the acceleration takes place if either the diffusion kernel or the initial condition has 'regular' heavy tails in $\mathbb{R}^d$ (in particular, decays slower than exponentially). Under general assumptions which can be verified for particular models, we present sharp estimates for the time-space zone which separates the region of convergence to the unstable zero solution with the region of convergence to the stable posi…
