We construct a new class of $\text{AdS}_3\times $S$^3\times $M$_4$ solutions of massive Type IIA supergravity with $(0,4)$ supersymmetries and SU(3) structure. We study in detail two subclasses of these solutions. The first subclass is when M$_4=$S$^2\times Σ_2$, with $Σ_2$ a 2d Riemann surface, and the geometry is foliated over the $Σ_2$. We interpret these solutions as duals to surface defect CFTs within the 6d $(1,0)$ CFTs dual to the $\text{AdS}_7\times$S$^2\times I$ solutions of massive IIA supergravity. The second subclass is when M$_4=\mathbb{T}^3\times I$ and the geometry is foliated over the interval. In this case supersymmetry is enhanced to $(4,4)$ in the massless limit, and the solutions are holographically dual to $(4,4)$ CFTs living in two dimensional D2-NS5-D4 Hanany-Witten brane set-ups. In turn, in the massive case the solutions find an interpretation as D2-D4 branes embedded in Type I' string theory. We construct explicit quiver gauge theories from the different brane set-ups that flow in the IR to the 2d dual CFTs dual to the solutions. We check the validity of our proposals with the matching between the field theory and holographic central charges.
We present Wess-Zumino actions for general IIA D-p-branes in explicit forms. We perform the covariant and irreducible separation of the fermionic constraints of IIA D-p-branes into the first class and the second class. A necessary condition which guarantees this separation is discussed. The generators of the local supersymmetry (kappa symmetry) and the kappa algebra are obtained. We also explicitly calculate the conserved charge of the global supersymmetry (SUSY) and the SUSY algebra which contains topological charges.
The N=4 superconformal algebra is derived from the symmetry transformations of fields in the N=4 SYM action in D=4. We use a Majorana-Weyl spinor in D=10 instead of four Weyl spinors in D=4. This makes it transparent to relate generators of the N=4 superconformal algebra to those of the super-AdS_5XS^5 algebra. Especially, we obtain the concrete map from the supersymmetries Q and conformal supersymmetries S in N=4 SYM to the supersymmetries (Q_1, Q_2) in the AdS_5XS^5 background.
Symmetry breaking by perturbations in the AdS/CFT correspondence is discussed. Perturbations of vector fields to the AdS_3 x S^3 solution of the six-dimensional N=(4,4) supergravity are considered. These perturbations are identified as descendents of chiral primary operators of a two-dimensional N=(4,4) CFT with conformal weight (2,2) or (1,1). We examine unbroken symmetries by the perturbations in the CFT side as well as in the supergravity side and find the same result: the N=(4,2) or N=(2,4) Poincare supersymmetry for the (2,2) perturbation and the N=(0,4) or N=(4,0) superconformal symmetry…
We describe brane configurations that interpolate between the N=6 AdS4xCP3 background of Type IIA supergravity and the N=0 AdS4xCP3 background of massive Type IIA supergravity. Using the T-dual Type IIB configurations we prove that this leads to unequal Chern-Simons levels in the dual gauge theory, and find the precise relation between the parameters of the gauge theory and the RR fluxes of the background. This provides further evidence for the conjecture of Gaiotto and Tomasiello about the CFT dual of the massive Type IIA background.
In this note we review the construction of topologically gauged M2 branes with 6 supersymmetries and discuss some of its properties. This is done using the 3-algebra formulation thereby covering all possible gauge groups. We will elaborate upon 1) the fundamental identity and its solutions noting, provided these gauged theories describe stacks of branes, the case of a single brane, 2) the chiral point solution to the field equations (occuring even for a single brane) that breaks the superconformal symmetries down to those of AdS_3 (TMG) supergravity, 3) physical parameters and how they scale i…
We review recent developments in the study of the AdS/CFT correspondence in low dimensions, focusing on the construction of AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ and AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ dual pairs in massive Type IIA string theory. We start discussing the $\text{AdS}_3\times S^2\times \text{CY}_2\times I$ solutions to massive IIA supergravity with $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry constructed in 1908.09851. We review the 2d CFTs dual to these solutions, together with their defect interpretation as surface defects within 5d fixed point theories living in D4-D8 bound states. Next, we discuss the $\text{AdS}_2\times S^3\t…
We establish a map between AdS$_3 \times$S$^2$ and AdS$_7$ solutions to massive IIA supergravity that allows one to interpret the former as holographic duals to D2-D4 defects inside 6d (1,0) CFTs. This relation singles out in a particular manner the AdS$_3\times$S$^2$ solution constructed from AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times $CY$_2$ through non-Abelian T-duality, with respect to a freely acting SU(2). We find explicit global completions to this solution and provide well-defined (0,4) 2d dual CFTs associated to them. These completions consist of linear quivers with colour groups coming from D2 and D6 b…
In this paper, we construct Janus-type solutions of three-dimensional gauged supergravity with sixteen supersymmetries. We find solutions which correspond to interfaces between the same CFT on both sides, as well as RG-flow interfaces between CFTs with different numbers of supersymmetries and central charges. The solutions are obtained by solving the flow equations derived from the supersymmetry variations, and they preserve some fraction of the supersymmetries of the $\AdS_3$ vacua.
We study $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3/\mathbb{Z}_k\times {\tilde S}^3/\mathbb{Z}_{k'}$ solutions to M-theory preserving $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetries, arising as near-horizon limits of M2-M5 brane intersections ending on M5'-branes, with both types of five-branes placed on A-type singularities. Solutions in this class asymptote locally to $\mathrm{AdS}_7/\mathbb{Z}_k\times {\tilde S}^3/\mathbb{Z}_{k'}$, and can thus be interpreted as holographic duals to surface defect CFTs within the $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ 6d CFT dual to this solution. Upon reduction to Type IIA, we obtain a new class of solu…
We investigate various aspects of the plane wave geometries obtained from D1/D5-brane system. We study the effect of Hopf-duality on the supersymmetries preserved by the Penrose limit of $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ geometry. In type-IIB case, we first show that the Penrose limit makes the size of the `would-be' internal torus comparable to that of the other directions. Based on this observation, we consider, in taking the Penrose limit, the generalization of the null geodesic to incorporate the tilted direction between the equator of $S^3$ and one of the torus directions. For generic values of…
All symmetric space AdS(n) solutions of ten-dimensional type IIA and type IIB supergravity are constructed for n>2. There are a total of 26 geometries. Out of these only 7 allow for supersymmetries and these are the well known backgrounds coming from near-horizon limits of (intersecting) branes in ten or eleven dimensions and preserving 32, 16 or 8 supersymmetries.
We discuss (extended) super Schrodinger algebras obtained as subalgebras of the superconformal algebra psu(2,2|4). The Schrodinger algebra with two spatial dimensions can be embedded into so(4,2). In the superconformal case the embedded algebra may be enhanced to the so-called super Schrodinger algebra. In fact, we find an extended super Schrodinger subalgebra of psu(2,2|4). It contains 24 supercharges (i.e., 3/4 of the original supersymmetries) and the generators of so(6), as well as the generators of the original Schrodinger algebra. In particular, the 24 supercharges come from 16 rigid supe…
We study various aspects of N=(4,4) type IIA GS superstring theory in the pp-wave background, which arises as the compactification of maximally supersymmetric eleven-dimensional pp-wave geometry along the spacelike isometry direction. We show the supersymmetry algebra of N=(4,4) worldsheet supersymmetry as well as non-linearly realized supersymmetry. We also give quantization of closed string and open string incorporating various boundary conditions. From the open string boundary conditions, we find configurations of D-branes which preserve half the supersymmetries. Among these we identify D4 …
We present two new solutions of Romans' massive type IIA supergravity characterized by the two non-trivial massive potentials of Romans' theory: the NSNS 2-form and the RR 7-form. They can be interpreted respectively as the intersection of a fundamental string and a D8-brane over a D0-brane and the intersection of a D6-brane with a D8-brane over a NSNS5-brane. The D8-brane manifests itself through the mass parameter and in the massless limit one recovers the standard fundamental string and D6-brane solutions. Although these solutions do not have the usual form for BPS bound states at threshold…
We identify the fractions of supersymmetry preserved by the most general warped flux AdS and flat backgrounds in both massive and standard IIA supergravities. We find that $AdS_n\times_w M^{10-n}$ preserve $2^{[{n\over2}]} k$ for $n\leq 4$ and $2^{[{n\over2}]+1} k$ for $4<n\leq 7$ supersymmetries, $k\in \bN_{>0}$. In addition we show that, for suitably restricted fields and $M^{10-n}$, the killing spinors of AdS backgrounds are given in terms of the zero modes of Dirac like operators on $M^{10-n}$. This generalizes the Lichnerowicz theorem for connections whose holonomy is included in a genera…
In this thesis, we investigate all warped AdS$_4$ and AdS$_3$ backgrounds with the most general allowed fluxes that preserve more than 16 supersymmetries in 10- and 11-dimensional supergravities. Assuming either that the internal manifold is compact without boundary or that the isometry algebra of the background decomposes into that of AdS and that of the transverse space, we find that there are no AdS$_4$ backgrounds in IIB supergravity. Similarly, we find a unique such background with 24 supersymmetries in IIA supergravity, locally isometric to $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$. In 11-dimensional …
Starting from the (q,p) 5-brane solution of type IIB string theory, we here construct the low energy configuration corresponding to (NS5,Dp)-brane bound states (for $0\leq p\leq 4$) using the T-duality map between type IIB and type IIA string theories. We use the SL(2,Z) symmetry on the type IIB bound state (NS5,D3) to construct (NS5,D5,D3) bound state. We then apply T-duality transformation again on this state to construct the bound states of the form (NS5,D(p+2),Dp) (for $0\leq p\leq 2$) of both type IIB and type IIA string theories. We give the tension formula for these states and show that…
Motivated by the study of black attractors in 8D supergravity with 16 supersymmetries, we use the field theory approach and 8D supersymmetry with non trivial central charges to shed light on the exact duality between heterotic string on T^2 and type IIA on real connected and compact surfaces Σ2. We investigate the two constraints that should be obeyed by Σ2 and give their solutions in terms of intersecting 2-cycles as well their classification using Dynkin diagrams of affine Kac-Moody algebras. It is shown as well that the moduli space of these dual theories is given by SO(1,1)x((SO(2,r+2))/(S…
We construct an N=1 superconformal field theory using branes of type IIA string theory. The IIA construction is related via T-duality to a IIB configuration with 3-branes in a background generated by two intersecting O7-planes and 7-branes. The IIB background can be viewed as a local piece of an F-theory compactification previously studied by Sen in connection with the Gimon-Polchinski orientifold. We discuss the deformations of the IIA and IIB constructions and describe a new supersymmetric configuration with curving D6-branes. Starting from the IIB description we find the supergravity dual o…
We prove that Killing horizons in massive IIA supergravity preserve an even number of supersymmetries, and that their symmetry algebra contains an $\mathfrak{sl}(2, R)$ subalgebra, confirming the conjecture of [5]. We also prove a new class of Lichnerowicz type theorems for connections of the spin bundle whose holonomy is contained in a general linear group.
We study the 2d N = 4 gauge theory descriptions of little strings on type II NS5- branes. The IIB strings on N NS5-branes are described by the N = (4,4) gauge theories, whose Higgs branch CFTs on U(N) instanton moduli spaces are relevant. The IIA strings are described by N = (4,4) circular A_{N-1} quiver theories, whose Coulomb branch CFTs are relevant. We study new N = (0,4) quiver gauge theories for the IIA strings, which make it easier to study some infrared observables. In particular, we show that the elliptic genera of the IIA / IIB strings precisely map to each other by T-duality.
We discuss AdS$_2\times S^3\times{\text{CY}}_2\times I_ρ$ solutions to massive Type IIA supergravity with 4 Poincaré supersymmetries. We propose explicit dual quiver quantum mechanics built out of D0 and D4 colour branes coupled to D4' and D8 flavour branes. We propose that these quivers describe the interactions of instantons and Wilson lines in 5d gauge theories with 8 Poincaré supersymmetries. Using the RR Maxwell fluxes of the solutions, conveniently put off-shell, we construct a functional from which the holographic central charge can be derived through a geometrical extremisation princip…
Motivated by the AdS_6/CFT_5 correspondence, we study general supersymmetric solutions of massive type IIA supergravity, consisting of a warped product of six-dimensional anti-de Sitter space AdS_6 with a four-dimensional Riemannian manifold M_4, and fluxes compatible with the SO(5,2) symmetry. We find that the only local solution of this form is the warped AdS_6 x_w S^4 solution, originally discovered by Brandhuber and Oz. We discuss the supersymmetric properties of this solution.
We study $T^2$ compactification of massive type IIA supergravity in presence of possible Ramond-Ramond (RR) background fluxes. The resulting theory in D=8 is shown to possess full $SL(2,R)\times SL(2,R)$ T-duality symmetry similar to the massless case. It is shown that elements of duality symmetry interpolate between massive type IIA compactified on $T^2$ and ordinary type IIA compactified on $T^2$ with RR 2-form flux. We also discuss relationship between M-theory vacua and massive type IIA vacua. The D8-brane is found to correspond to M-theory `pure gravity' solution which is a direct product…
We consider the four-point function of operators in the stress tensor multiplet of the $U(N)_k\times U(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory, in the limit where $N$ is taken to infinity while $N/k^{5}$ is held fixed. In this limit, ABJM theory is holographically dual to type IIA string theory on $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$ at finite string coupling $g_s \sim (N/k^5)^{1/4}$. While at leading order in $1/N$, the stress tensor multiplet four-point function can be computed from type IIA supergravity, in this work we focus on the first subleading correction, which comes from tree level Witten diagrams with an $R^4$…
We extend the search for supergravity solution duals of non-relativistic $d=3$ CFTs to $d=11$ supergravity. We consider the internal space to be an $S^2$ bundle over a product base: $S^2 \times S^2$ and $S^2 \times T^2$. For purely M-theoretic $S^2 \times S^2$, we find only magnetic fluxes preserving two supersymmetries. $S^2 \times T^2$ is far richer admitting in addition to magnetic fluxes, various non-trivial electric fluxes which break all supersymmetry.
In this work we study various aspects of six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs. We consider the construction of their string duals in Massive IIA and discuss some observables in given examples. We study the dynamics of string solitons wrapping and rotating on the Massive IIA background and show that the associated Hamiltonian system is both non-integrable and chaotic, implying the non-integrability of the dual CFT. Our procedure is analytic, using well developed mathematical techniques, and numerical, by the explicit calculation of power spectra, Lyapunov coefficients and Poincaré sections.
We consider non-Abelian T-duality on N=1 supergravity backgrounds possessing well understood field theory duals. For the case of D3-branes at the tip of the conifold, we dualise along an SU(2) isometry. The result is a type-IIA geometry whose lift to M-theory is of the type recently proposed by Bah et. al. as the dual to certain N=1 SCFT quivers produced by M5-branes wrapping a Riemann surface. In the non-conformal cases we find smooth duals in massive IIA supergravity with a Romans mass naturally quantised. We initiate the interpretation of these geometries in the context of the AdS/CFT corre…
Motivated by a recently found class of AdS_7 solutions, we classify AdS_5 solutions in massive IIA, finding infinitely many new analytical examples. We reduce the general problem to a set of PDEs, determining the local internal metric, which is a fibration over a surface. Under a certain simplifying assumption, we are then able to analytically solve the PDEs and give a complete list of all solutions. Among these, one class is new and regular. These spaces can be related to the AdS_7 solutions via a simple universal map for the metric, dilaton and fluxes. The natural interpretation of this map …
We present a new BPS flow within minimal $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity in seven dimensions describing a warped $\textrm{AdS}_{3}$ background supported by a "dyonic" profile of the three-form. Furthermore, we discuss the holographic interpretation of the above solution in terms of a defect $\textrm{SCFT}_{2}$ inside the 6d $(1,0)$ theory dual to the AdS in the asymptotic region. Finally we provide the brane picture of the aforementioned defect CFT as D2- and wrapped D4-branes ending on a D6 - NS5 - D8 funnel in massive type IIA string theory.
We obtain an AdS$_{2}$ solution to Type IIA supergravity with 4 Poincare supersymmetries, via non-Abelian T-duality with respect to a freely acting SL(2,$\mathbf{R}$) isometry group, operating on the AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times$CY$_2$ solution to Type IIB. That is, non-Abelian T-duality on AdS$_3$. The dual background obtained fits in the class of AdS$_2\times$S$^3\times$CY$_2$ solutions to massive Type IIA constructed in [1]. We propose and study a quiver quantum mechanics dual to this solution that we interpret as describing the backreaction of the baryon vertex of a D4-D8 brane intersection.
We present new M2 and M5-brane solutions in M-theory based on transverse Gibbons-Hawking spaces. These solutions provide realizations of fully localized type IIA D2/D6 and NS5/D6 brane intersections. One novel feature of these solutions is that the metric functions depend on more than two transverse coordinates (unlike all the other previous known solutions). All the solutions have eight preserved supersymmetries and the world-volume theories of the NS5-branes are new non-local, non-gravitational, six dimensional, T-dual little string theories with eight supersymmetries. We discuss the limits …
We lift the bosonic AdS_4 x CP^3 solution of type IIA supergravity preserving 24 supersymmetries to a D=10 superspace which has 32 Grassmann-odd directions. The type IIA superspace is obtained from D=11 via dimensional reduction of the coset superspace OSp(8|4)/SO(7) x SO(1,3) by realizing the latter as a Hopf fibration over the former. This construction generalizes to superspace the Hopf fibration of S^7 as a U(1) bundle over CP^3, and is suitable for writing the explicit form of Green-Schwarz-type actions encoding the dynamics of the type IIA string and branes in the AdS_4 x CP^3 superbackgr…
We study Schrödinger invariant deformations of the AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 (or K3) solution of IIB supergravity and find a large class of solutions with integer and half-integer dynamical exponents. We analyze the supersymmetries preserved by our solutions and find an infinite number of solutions with four supersymmetries. We study the solutions holographically and find that the dual D1-D5 (or F1-NS5) CFT is deformed by irrelevant operators of spin one and two.
We study the entropy of static dyonic BPS black holes in AdS$_4$ in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauged supergravities with vector and hyper multiplets, and how the entropy can be reproduced with a microscopic counting of states in the AdS/CFT dual field theory. We focus on the particular example of BPS black holes in AdS$_4 \times S^6$ in massive Type IIA, whose dual three-dimensional boundary description is known and simple. To count the states in field theory we employ a supersymmetric topologically twisted index, which can be computed exactly with localization techniques. We find perfect match at le…
We explore all warped $AdS_4\times_w M^{D-4}$ backgrounds with the most general allowed fluxes that preserve more than 16 supersymmetries in $D=10$- and $11$-dimensional supergravities. After imposing the assumption that either the internal space $M^{D-4}$ is compact without boundary or the isometry algebra of the background decomposes into that of AdS$_4$ and that of $M^{D-4}$, we find that there are no such backgrounds in IIB supergravity. Similarly in IIA supergravity, there is a unique such background with 24 supersymmetries locally isometric to $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$, and in $D=11$ s…
We clarify the higher-dimensional origin of a class of dyonic gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity recently discovered, when the gauge group is chosen to be ISO(7). This dyonically-gauged maximal supergravity arises from consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on $S^6$, and its magnetic coupling constant descends directly from the Romans mass. The critical points of the supergravity uplift to new AdS$_4$ massive type IIA vacua. We identify the corresponding CFT$_3$ duals as super-Chern-Simons-matter theories with simple gauge group SU$(N)$, with level $k$ given by the Romans m…
We discuss four dimensional renormalization group flows which preserve sixteen supersymmetries. In the infra-red, these can be viewed as deformations of the N=4 superconformal fixed points by special, irrelevant operators. It is argued that the gauge coupling beta function continues to vanish identically, for all coupling constants and energy scales, for such RG flows. In addition, the dimensions of all operators in short supersymmetry representations are constant along such flows. It is conjectured that there is a generalization of the AdS/CFT holography correspondence which describes such fl…
We review recent developments in the study of the AdS/CFT correspondence in lower dimensions. We start summarising the classification of AdS$_3\times$S$^2$ solutions in massive Type IIA supergravity with (0,4) supersymmetries, and the construction of their 2d dual quiver CFTs. These theories are the seed for further developments, that we review next. First, we construct a new class of AdS$_3$ solutions in M-theory that describe M-strings in M5-brane intersections. Second, we generate a new class of AdS$_2\times$S$^3$ solutions in massive IIA with 4 supercharges that we interpret as describing …
M-theory has different global supersymmetry structures in its various dual incarnations, as characterized by the M-algebra in 11D, the type IIA, type-IIB, heterotic, type-I extended supersymmetries in 10D, and non-Abelian supersymmetries in the AdS_n x S^m backgrounds. We show that all of these supersymmetries are unified within the supersymmetry OSp(1/64), thus hinting that the overall global spacetime symmetry of M-theory is OSp(1/64). We suggest that the larger symmetries contained within OSp(1/64) which go beyond the familiar symmetries, are non-linearly realized hidden symmetries of M-the…
In this thesis I review various aspects of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence, where AdS_4 supergravity arises from compactification of M-theory on a coset space G/H and preserves N<8 supersymmetries. One focal point of my review is that the complete spectrum of such N-extended supergravity can be determined by means of harmonic analysis on the homogeneous space G/H. This spectrum can be matched with the candidate conformal theory on the boundary, in this way providing very non-trivial checks of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Furthermore, this spectrum can be useful to study the representation theory…
We study a class of exact supersymmetric solutions of type IIB Supergravity. They have an SO(4) x SU(2) x U(1) isometry and preserve generically 4 of the 32 supersymmetries of the theory. Asymptotically AdS_5 x S^5 solutions in this class are dual to 1/8 BPS chiral operators which preserve the same symmetries in the N=4 SYM theory. They are parametrized by a set of four functions that satisfy certain differential equations. We analyze the solutions to these equations in a large radius asymptotic expansion: they carry charges with respect to two U(1) KK gauge fields and their mass saturates the…
We discuss new solutions in massive Type IIA supergravity with AdS$_3\times$S$^2$ factors, preserving ${\cal N}=(0,4)$ SUSY. We propose a duality with a precise family of quivers that flow to ${\cal N}=(0,4)$ fixed points at low energies. These quivers consist on two families of linear quivers coupled by matter fields. Physical observables such as the central charges provide stringent checks of the proposed duality. A formal mapping is presented connecting our backgrounds with those dual to six dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ CFTs, suggesting the existence of a flow across dimensions between the …
I review recent approaches to constructing supersymmetric lattice theories focusing in particular on the concept of topological twisting. The latter technique is shown to expose a nilpotent, scalar supersymmetry which can be implemented exactly in the lattice theory. Using these ideas a lattice action for $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills in four dimensions can be written down which is gauge invariant, free of fermion doublers and respects one out of a total of 16 continuum supersymmetries. It is shown how these exact symmetries together with the large point group symmetry of the lattice strong…
In this paper we find various new backgrounds in Type IIB, IIA and M-theory with an $AdS_3$-factor. The solutions are smooth and preserve small amounts of SUSY. These new backgrounds are found by application of non-Abelian T-duality (sometimes combined with T-duality) on the supergravity solution dual to the Klebanov-Witten CFT compactified to two dimensions. The field theory aspects encoded by these backgrounds are studied. We give a detailed account of conserved charges, central charges, entanglement entropy and Wilson loops. Further, we present a possible field theory interpretation for our…
We find a new class of N=2 massive IIA solutions whose internal spaces are S^2 fibrations over S^2 x S^2. These solutions appear naturally as massive deformations of the type IIA reduction of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds in M-theory, including Q^{1,1,1} and Y^{p,k}, and play a role in the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence. We use this example to initiate a systematic study of the parameter space of massive solutions with fluxes. We define and study the natural parameter space of the solutions, which is a certain dense subset of R^3, whose boundaries correspond to orbifold or conifold singularities. On a c…
In this talk we discuss two classes of examples of warped products of AdS spaces in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The first class of examples appears in the construction of dual Type I' string descriptions to five dimensional supersymmetric fixed points with E_{N_f+1} global symmetry. The background is obtained as the near horizon geometry of the D4-D8 brane system in massive Type IIA supergravity. The second class of examples appears when considering the N=2 superconformal theories defined on a 3+1 dimensional hyperplane intersection of two sets of M5 branes. We use the dual stri…
In this paper we study spin 2 fluctuations around a warped $AdS_3 \times S^2 \times T^4 \times \mathcal{I}_ρ$ background in type IIA supergravity with small $\mathcal{N} = (0,4)$ supersymmetry. We find a class of fluctuations, which will be called \textit{universal}, that is independent of the background data and corresponds to operators with scaling dimension $Δ= 2l +2$, being $l$ the angular-momentum-quantum-number on the $S^2$ which realises the $SU(2)_R$ symmetry. We compute the central charge for $\mathcal{N} = (0,4)$ two-dimensional superconformal theories from the action of the spin 2 f…
In this thesis we give a pedagogical introduction to the construction of NS5-D6(-O6)-D8(-O8) brane setups in massive type IIA string theory and the six-dimensional $(1,0)$ SCFT's they engineer. After describing how to introduce the various ingredients (and their interplay) in type IIA, we explain how to read off an effective linear quiver description of the SCFT's from the brane setups. We then explain in detail how to construct all AdS$_7$ solutions of massive IIA supergravity which are dual to the field theories. We do this by exploiting the power of generalized complex geometry. We then sho…
We study a Wess-Zumino-Witten model with target space AdS_3 x (S^3 x S^3 x S^1)/Z_2. This allows us to construct space-time N=3 superconformal theories. By combining left-, and right-moving parts through a GSO and a Z_2 projections, a new asymmetric (N,\bar{N})=(3,1) model is obtained. It has an extra gauge (affine) SU(2) symmetry in the target space of the type IIA string. An associated configuration is realized as slantwise intersecting M5-M2 branes with a Z_2-fixed plane in the M-theory viewpoint.
We construct new M-theory solutions of M5 branes that are a realization of the fully localized ten dimensional NS5/D6 and NS5/D5 brane intersections. These solutions are obtained by embedding self-dual geometries lifted to M-theory. We reduce these solutions down to ten dimensions, obtaining new D-brane systems in type IIA/IIB supergravity. The worldvolume theories of the NS5-branes are new non-local, non-gravitational, six dimensional, T-dual little string theories with eight supersymmetries.
We consider four dimensional CHL models with sixteen spacetime supersymmetries obtained from orbifolds of type IIA superstring on K3 x T^2 by a Z_N symmetry acting (possibly) non-geometrically on K3. We show that most of these models (in particular, for geometric symmetries) are self-dual under a weak-strong duality acting on the heterotic axio-dilaton modulus S by a "Fricke involution" S --> -1/NS. This is a novel symmetry of CHL models that lies outside of the standard SL(2,Z)-symmetry of the parent theory, heterotic strings on T^6. For self-dual models this implies that the lattice of purel…
We analyze the large N supergravity descriptions of the class of type IIB models T-dual to elliptic type IIA brane configurations containing two orientifold 6-planes and up to two NS 5-branes. The T-dual IIB configurations contain N D3-branes in the background of an orientifold 7-plane and, in some models, a Z_2 orbifold and/or D7-branes, which give rise to four-dimensional N=2 (or N=4) gauge theories with at most two factors. We identify the chiral primary states of the supergravity theories, and match them to gauge invariant operators of the corresponding superconformal theories using Maldac…
We analyse the solutions to these equations in a large radius asymptotic expansion: they carry charges with respect to two U(1) KK gauge fields and their mass saturates the expected BPS bound. We also show how the same formalism is suitable for the description of th…
