In this paper we find various new backgrounds in Type IIB, IIA and M-theory with an $AdS_3$-factor. The solutions are smooth and preserve small amounts of SUSY. These new backgrounds are found by application of non-Abelian T-duality (sometimes combined with T-duality) on the supergravity solution dual to the Klebanov-Witten CFT compactified to two dimensions. The field theory aspects encoded by these backgrounds are studied. We give a detailed account of conserved charges, central charges, entanglement entropy and Wilson loops. Further, we present a possible field theory interpretation for our backgrounds.
We calculate an unrefined limit of the superconformal index (the Schur-like index) of the Klebanov-Witten theory from the dual AdS side by using the recently developed giant graviton expansion method. Our formula includes multiple sums of the contribution of the D3-branes wrapped on three-cycles in the internal space. We numerically confirm the validity of our formula by comparing indices obtained by the formula with the gauge theory results.
In this paper we consider both Abelian as well as non-Abelian T-duals of the Klebanov-Witten background and inspect their various Penrose limits. We show that these backgrounds admit pp-wave solutions in the neighbourhood of appropriate null geodesics. We study the quantization of closed string propagating on some of the resulting pp-wave backgrounds and comment on the probable field theory duals.
We probe flavour branes in the Klebanov-Witten background in global coordinates. We show that supersymmetric probes correspond to massless flavours and analyse their spectrum of fluctuations. Our studies suggest that the mesons are dissociated by the Casimir energy. The spectrum is equidistant, with a ground state given by the conformal dimension of the operator dual to the fluctuations. We show that the equidistant structure of the spectrum arises from the addition of the angular momenta of the fundamental fields composing the meson operators.
We investigate 1/2 BPS conformal surface operators in the Klebanov-Witten theory. These surface operators preserve certain parts of the conformal symmetry and R-symmetry as well as half of the supersymmetry. We propose the gravity dual of the surface operator as a configuration of a D3-brane in AdS_5 x T^{1,1}. This D3-brane preserves the same amount of the supersymmetry as the surface operator. We also compute the correlation function of the surface operator and a chiral primary operator.
We study renormalization group flows among three dimensional superconformal gauge theories which closely resemble the renowned Klebanov-Witten flow in four dimensions. In the large N limit, each theory appearing in the flow is holographically dual to M-theory on AdS4 times a toric Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifold. The theories are obtained through the so-called flavoring method, which adds some fundamental matter fields to the dimensionally reduced Klebanov-Witten theories. We reconfirm the matching between the gauge theories and the dual geometries by comparing the chiral ring structure. As a m…
Using AdS/CFT, we study the addition of an arbitrary number of backreacting flavors to the Klebanov-Witten theory, making many checks of consistency between our new Type IIB plus branes solution and expectations from field theory. We study generalizations of our method for adding flavors to all N=1 SCFTs that can be realized on D3-branes at the tip of a Calabi-Yau cone. Also, general guidelines suitable for the addition of massive flavor branes are developed.
We study oscillating string solutions in the Klebanov-Witten and its non-Abelian T-dual background dualised along an SU(2) isometry. We find the string energy as the function of oscillation number and angular momentum. We show that for a particular set of T-dual co-ordinates both the background have equal string states. We also study the string states where the strings are expanding and contracting in the T-dual co-ordinate direction. We expect the presence of the superconformal field theory dual operators whose anomalous dimensions depend on T-dual co-ordinate.
In this paper we study an $AdS_5$ solution constructed using non-Abelian T-duality, acting on the Klebanov-Witten background. We show that this is dual to a linear quiver with two tails of gauge groups of increasing rank. The field theory dynamics arises from a D4-NS5-NS5' brane set-up, generalizing the constructions discussed by Bah and Bobev. These realize $\mathcal{N}=1$ quiver gauge theories built out of $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ vector multiplets flowing to interacting fixed points in the infrared. We compute the central charge using $a$-maximization, and show its precise agreem…
We study D-instanton solutions in type IIB supergravity on $AdS_5\times T^{1,1}$, which has a dual ${\cal N}=1$ $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory. Apart from ordinary D(-1)-brane instantons, we discuss wrapped D1-branes over minimal 2-cycles and derive explicit solutions preserving half the supersymmetries. These solutions are identified with Yang-Mills instantons which are (anti)self-dual in both gauge group factors with instanton charge $(k,k')$. By examining the boundary behaviour of the solutions we discuss the coupling to the corresponding dual boundary operators, and identify t…
We consider the addition of a large number of massive dynamical flavors to the Klebanov-Witten theory, the quiver gauge theory describing the low energy dynamics of Nc D3-branes at the conifold singularity. Massive flavors are introduced by means of Nf D7-branes which are holomorphically embedded and smeared along the transverse directions. After some general comments on the validity of the smearing procedure, we find the full backreacted supergravity solution corresponding to a particular class of massive embeddings. The solution depends on a running effective number of flavors, whose functio…
We study the cosmology induced on a brane probing a warped throat region in a Calabi-Yau compactification of type IIB string theory. For the case of a BPS D3-brane probing the Klebanov-Strassler warped deformed conifold, the cosmology described by a suitable brane observer is a bouncing, spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with time-varying Newton's constant, which passes smoothly from a contracting to an expanding phase. In the Klebanov-Tseytlin approximation to the Klebanov-Strassler solution the cosmology would end with a big crunch singularity. In this sense, the warped defo…
In this sequel to [L-Y1], [L-L-S-Y], and [L-Y2] (respectively arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG], arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG], and arXiv:0901.0342 [math.AG]), we study a D-brane probe on a conifold from the viewpoint of the Azumaya structure on D-branes and toric geometry. The details of how deformations and resolutions of the standard toric conifold $Y$ can be obtained via morphisms from Azumaya points are given. This should be compared with the quantum-field-theoretic/D-brany picture of deformations and resolutions of a conifold via a D-brane probe sitting at the conifold singularity in the work of Kle…
We consider three-parameter Yang-Baxter deformations of the $AdS_5\times T^{1,1}$ superstring for abelian $r$-matrices which are solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We find two new backgrounds which are dual to the dipole deformed Klebanov-Witten gauge theory and to the nonrelativistic Klebanov-Witten gauge theory with Schrödinger symmetry
We review warped compactifications of superstring theory with some attention to the limit in which these resemble "bottom-up" phenomenological models. In addition to some discussion of the original Klebanov-Witten and Klebanov-Strassler set-ups, we also touch on various generalizations of the geometry that have been considered. Various other systems with a holographic duality are also briefly reviewed. The point of this latter exploration is to illustrate how far beyond the standard AdS(5) x S(5) set-up things have moved over the years.
We study semiclassical strings in the Klebanov-Witten and in the Non-abelian T-dual Klebanov-Witten backgrounds. We show that both backgrounds share a subsector of equivalent states up to conditions on the T-dual coordinates which also impose a breaking of the R-symmetry by a discrete group. We also analyze string configurations where the strings are stretched along the T-dual coordinates. This semiclassical analysis predicts the existence of chiral primary operators for the dual (strongly coupled) superconformal field theory whose anomalous dimension depends on the T-dual coordinates. We brie…
Brane world scenarios offer a way of setting the cosmological constant to zero after supersymmetry breaking provided there is a sufficient number of adjustable integration constants/parameters. In the case of the Horava-Witten theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold, we argue that it is difficult to find enough freedom to get a zero (or small) cosmological constant after supersymmetry breaking.
The Klebanov-Strassler background is invariant under the Z_2 symmetry I, which acts by exchanging the bi-fundamental fields A and B, accompanied by the charge conjugation. We study the background perturbations in the I-odd sector and find an exhaustive list of bosonic states invariant under the global SU(2)*SU(2) symmetry. In addition to the scalars identified in an earlier publication arXiv:0712.4404 we find 7 families of massive states of spin 1. Together with the spin 0 states they form 3 families of massive vector multiplets and 2 families of massive gravitino multiplets, containing a vect…
The prepotential and spectral curve are described for a smooth interpolation between an enlarged N=4 SUSY and ordinary N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions, obtained by compactification from five dimensions with non-trivial (periodic and antiperiodic) boundary conditions. This system provides a new solution to the generalized WDVV equations. We show that this exhausts all possible solutions of a given functional form.
Turning on a NS-NS three-form flux in a compact space drives some D-branes to be either Freed-Witten anomalous or unstable to decay into fluxes by the appearance of instantonic branes. By applying T-duality on a toroidal compactification, the NS-flux is transformed into metric fluxes. We propose a T-dual version of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch Spectral Sequence upon which we describe the Freed-Witten anomaly and the brane-flux transition driven by NS and metric fluxes in a twisted torus. The required conditions to cancel the anomaly and the appearance of new instantonic branes are also described. In …
We examine the extension of the Klebanov-Witten gauge/gravity correspondence away from the low-energy conformal limit, to a duality involving the full, asymptotically Ricci-flat background describing three-branes on the conifold. After a discussion of the nature of this duality at the string theory level (prior to taking any limits), we concentrate on the intermediate-energy regime where excited string modes are negligible but the branes are still coupled to the bulk. Building upon previous work, we are able to characterize the effective D3-brane worldvolume action in this regime as an IR defo…
We continue our study of nonperturbative superpotentials of four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge group U(N) on R^3 x S^1, broken to N=1 due to a classical superpotential. In a previous paper, hep-th/0304061, we discussed how the low-energy quantum superpotential can be obtained by substituting the Lax matrix of the underlying integrable system directly into the classical superpotential. In this paper we prove algebraically that this recipe yields the correct factorization of the Seiberg-Witten curves, which is an important check of the conjecture. We will also give an …
We expand on Klebanov and Witten's recent proposal for formulating the AdS/CFT correspondence using irregular boundary conditions. The proposal is shown to be correct to any order in perturbation theory.
We show that the entanglement of purification and the critical distance between the two mixed systems is a powerful measure in probing the phase structures of QCD and confining backgrounds, as it can distinguish the scale of chiral symmetry breaking versus the scale of confinement/deconfinement phase transitions. For two symmetric strips with equal and finite width and infinite length, and in the background of several confining geometries, we numerically calculate the critical distance between them where the mutual information vanishes and show that this quantity can probe the very rich phase …
We discuss the structure of 4D gauged supergravity algebras corresponding to globally non-geometric compactifications of F-theory, admitting a local geometric description in terms of 10D supergravity. By starting with the well known algebra of gauge generators associated to non-geometric type IIB fluxes, we derive a full algebra containing all, closed RR and NSNS, geometric and non-geometric dual fluxes. We achieve this generalization by a systematic application of SL(2,Z) duality transformations and by taking care of the spinorial structure of the fluxes. The resulting algebra encodes much in…
We showed that there is no SU(2) Witten anomaly in a large class of 4d N = 2 supersymmetric Heterotic string compactifications. The consistency conditions we consider are the modularity of the new supersymmetric index, the integrality of BPS indices, and the discrete Peccei-Quinn shift symmetries. We also found an example where these conditions are not sufficient to show that the theory is anomaly free. This suggests that there are more conditions in the worldsheet SCFT essential for consistent string compactifications.
We implement Mikhailov's holomorphic curve construction to explore various properties of giant gravitons in type IIB string theory on $AdS_{5}\times T^{1,1}$. By coloring the D-brane worldvolume, we are able to show how, in the string theory, the giant graviton factorizes at its maximal size into two dibaryons - topologically stable D-branes wrapping non-contractible cycles in the $T^{1,1}$. This is related to the structure of the symmetry group of the emergent Klebanov-Witten gauge theory being a product - $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ instead of the canonical $SU(N)$. Finally, we complete this study …
The low-energy limit of the 6D non-critical string theory with $N=1$ SUSY and $E_8$ chiral current algebra compactified on $T^2$ is generically an $N=2$ $U(1)$ vector multiplet. We study the analog of the Seiberg-Witten solution for the low-energy effective action as a function of $E_8$ Wilson lines on the compactified torus and the complex modulus of that torus. The moduli space includes regions where the Seiberg-Witten curves for $SU(2)$ QCD are recovered as well as regions where the newly discovered 4D theories with enhanced $E_{6,7,8}$ global symmetries appear.
Diaconescu, Moore and Witten proved that the partition function of type IIA string theory coincides (to the extent checked) with the partition function of M-theory. One of us (Kriz) and Sati proposed in a previous paper a refinement of the IIA partition function using elliptic cohomology and conjectured that it coincides with a partition function coming from F-theory. In this paper, we define the geometric term of the F-theoretical effective action on type IIA compactifications. In the special case when the first Pontrjagin class of spacetime vanishes, we also prove a version of the Kriz-Sati …
We study limits of four-dimensional type II Calabi-Yau compactifications with vanishing four-cycle singularities, which are dual to $\IT^2$ compactifications of the six-dimensional non-critical string with $E_8$ symmetry. We define proper subsectors of the full string theory, which can be consistently decoupled. In this way we obtain rigid effective theories that have an intrinsically stringy BPS spectrum. Geometrically the moduli spaces correspond to special geometry of certain non-compact Calabi-Yau spaces of an intriguing form. An equivalent description can be given in terms of Seiberg-Witt…
We show that warped throats of the Klebanov-Strassler kind, regarded as 5d flux compactifications on Kähler-Einstein manifolds $\bf{X}_5$ describe fully backreacted solutions of transplanckian axion monodromy. We show that the asymptotic Klebanov-Tseytlin solution features a 5d axion physically rolling through its dependence on an spatial coordinate, and traversing arbitrarily large geodesic distances in field space. The solution includes the backreaction on the breathing mode of the compactification space and on the vacuum energy, which yields a novel form of flattening. We establish the desc…
The compactification of five dimensional N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills (YM) theory onto a circle provides a four dimensional YM model with N=4 SUSY. This supersymmetry can be broken down to N=2 if non-trivial boundary conditions in the compact dimension, ϕ(x_5 +R) = e^{2πiε}ϕ(x_5), are imposed on half of the fields. This two-parameter (R,ε) family of compactifications includes as particular limits most of the previously studied four dimensional N=2 SUSY YM models with supermultiplets in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The finite-dimensional integrable system associated to these theories v…
We study the T^5/Z_2 orbifold compactification of the M-theory matrix model. This model was originally studied by Dasgupta, Mukhi, and Witten. It was found that one had to add 16 5-branes to the system to make the compactification consistent. We demonstrate how this is mimicked in the matrix model.
We study compactifications of the $N=2$ 6D tensionless string on various complex two-folds down to two-dimensions. In the IR limit they become non-trivial conformal field theories in 2D. Using results of Vafa and Witten on the partition functions of twisted Super-Yang-Mills theories, we can study the resulting CFT. We also discuss the contribution of instantons made by wrapping strings on 2-cycles of the complex two-fold.
We show that the conifold and deformed-conifold warped compactifications of the ten-dimensional type IIB supergravity, including the Klebanov-Strassler solution, are dynamically unstable in the moduli sector representing the scale of a Calabi-Yau space, although it can be practically stable for a quite long time in a region with a large warp factor. This instability is associated with complete supersymmetry breaking except for a special case and produces significant time-dependence in the structure of the four-dimensional base spacetime as well as of the internal space.
We present an overview of Gromov-Witten theory and its links with string theory compactifications, focussing on the GW potential as the generating function for topological string amplitudes at genus $g$. Restricting to Calabi-Yau target spaces, we give a complete derivation of the GW potential, discuss problems of multicovers and the infinite product expression. We explain the link with counting instantons or BPS states in type IIA and heterotic string theories. We show why the numbers of BPS states on the heterotic side can be a priori expressed in terms of those on the type IIA side, and vic…
The Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of graviton are studied in the IIB superstring compactification where the warped geometry is realized at the Klebanov-Strassler (KS) throat. Knowledge of the metric of the KS throat enables us to determine their wave functions with good accuracy, without any further specification of the rest of Calabi-Yau space, owing to the localization of the KK modes. Mass spectrum and couplings to the four dimensional fields are computed for some type of the KK modes, and compared to those of the well-known Randall-Sundrum model. We find that the properties of the KK modes of th…
String equations for the vertex operators of type IIB on $AdS_3\times S^3$ background with NS-NS flux are calculated using Berkovits-Vafa-Witten formalism. With suitable field definitions, the linearized field equations for six-dimensional supergravity and a tensor multiplet on $AdS_3\times S^3$ are recovered from these. We also discuss the massless degrees of freedom that survive the $S^3$ Kaluza-Klein compactification and how our vertex operators are related to the vertex operators introduced by Giveon, Kutasov and Seiberg.
We study four dimensional N=2 G_2 supersymmetric gauge theory on R^3\times S^1 deformed by a tree level superpotential. We will show that the exact superpotential can be obtained by making use of the Lax matrix of the corresponding integrable model which is the periodic Toda lattice based on the dual of the affine G_2 Lie algebra. At extrema of the superpotential the Seiberg-Witten curve typically factorizes, and we study the algebraic equations underlying this factorization. For U(N) theories the factorization was closely related to the geometrical engineering of such gauge theories and to ma…
The genuine Kaluza-Klein-like theories (with no fields in addition to gravity with torsion) have difficulties with the existence of massless spinors after the compactification of some of dimensions of space\cite{witten}. We demonstrate in this letter on an example of a flat torus - as a compactified part of an (1+5)-dimensional space - that for constant fields and appropriate boundary conditions there exists in the 1+3 dimensional space a massless solution, which is mass protected and chirally coupled with a Kaluza-Klein charge to the corresponding gauge field.
The six-dimensional (2,0) theory formulated in the Ω-background gives rise to two-dimensional effective degrees of freedom. By compactifying the theory on the circle fibers of two cigar-like manifolds, we find that a natural candidate for the effective theory is a chiral gauged WZW model. The symmetry algebra of the model contains the W-algebra that appears on the two-dimensional side of the AGT correspondence. We show that the expectation values of its currents determine the Seiberg-Witten curve of the four-dimensional side.
In hep-th/9803002, Maldacena argued that in the light of the AdS/CFT correspondence as formulated by Witten and Gubser, Klebanov and Polyakov as a relation between partition functions, the expectation value of the Wilson loop in $\cal N$=4 SU(N) SYM is given by the worldsheet partition function with the action formulated on an $AdS_5\times S^5$ background and the world sheet ending on the loop on the boundary of $AdS_5$. What we propose to do in this paper is to provide some alternative arguments as to why it should be so.
We consider the behavior of D7 probes of supersymmetric warped geometries that are perturbed by the presence of anti-D3-branes. Such constructions are the gravitational duals of non-supersymmetric states in supersymmetric flavored gauge theories. Although the D7s that we consider do not feel a force from either D3s or anti-D3s alone, when both types of 3-branes are present the D7s deform and fall a small distance toward the 3-branes. We perform our analysis in AdS^5 x S^5 and the Klebanov-Witten solution and find qualitatively similar behavior in each case. We then extend our consideration to …
We construct compact examples of D-manifolds for type IIB strings. The construction has a natural interpretation in terms of compactification of a 12 dimensional `F-theory'. We provide evidence for a more natural reformulation of type IIB theory in terms of F-theory. Compactification of M-theory on a manifold $K$ which admits elliptic fibration is equivalent to compactification of F-theory on $K\times S^1$. A large class of $N=1$ theories in 6 dimensions are obtained by compactification of F-theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds. A class of phenomenologically promising compactifications of F-theory …
We study compactifications of Matrix theory on twisted tori and non-commutative versions of them. As a first step, we review the construction of multidimensional twisted tori realized as nilmanifolds based on certain nilpotent Lie algebras. Subsequently, matrix compactifications on tori are revisited and the previously known results are supplemented with a background of a non-commutative torus with non-constant non-commutativity and an underlying non-associative structure on its phase space. Next we turn our attention to 3- and 6-dimensional twisted tori and we describe consistent backgrounds …
In this paper we analyze the structure of supersymmetric vacua in compactifications of the heterotic string on certain manifolds with SU(3) structure. We first study the effective theories obtained from compactifications on half-flat manifolds and show that solutions which stabilise the moduli at acceptable values are hard to find. We then derive the effective theories associated with compactification on generalised half-flat manifolds. It is shown that these effective theories are consistent with four-dimensional N=1 supergravity and that the superpotential can be obtained by a Gukov-Vafa-Wit…
The SU(4)-instanton equations are natural BPS equations for instantons on 8-manifolds. We study these equations on nearly Kaehler and Calabi-Yau torsion manifolds of the form M x G/H, with G/H a coset space and M a product of a torus with Euclidean space. By imposing G-invariance the instanton equations reduce to interesting equations on M; for example, equations used by Kapustin and Witten in the geometric Langlands program arise in this way. We carry out reductions in a number of examples, and where possible present simple solutions.
We analyse the dynamics of a probe D3-(anti-)brane propagating in a warped string compactification, making use of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action approximation. We also examine the time dependent expansion of such moving branes from the ``mirage cosmology'' perspective, where cosmology is induced by the brane motion in the background spacetime. A range of physically interesting backgrounds are considered: AdS5, Klebanov-Tseytlin and Klebanov-Strassler. Our focus is on exploring what new phenomenology is obtained from giving the brane angular momentum in the extra dimensions. We find that in gener…
In a recent paper Klebanov and Witten (hep-th/9905104) proposed to formulate the AdS/CFT correspondence principle by taking an "irregular boundary condition" for a scalar field. In this paper we generalize this idea to the case of spinor field with interaction. The action functional following from the choice of irregular boundary conditions and which must be used in the AdS/CFT correspondence is related to the usual action by a Legendre transform. For the new theory we found the modified Green's function that must be used for internal lines in calculating higher order graphs. It is proved that…
We discuss the four dimensional effective action for type IIB flux compactifications, and obtain the quadratic terms taking warp effects into account. The analysis includes both the 4-d zero modes and their KK excitations, which become light at large warping. We identify an `axial' type gauge for the supergravity fluctuations, which makes the four dimensional degrees of freedom manifest. The other key ingredient is the existence of constraints coming from the ten dimensional equations of motion. Applying these conditions leads to considerable simplifications, enabling us to obtain the low ener…
A general framework for applying the pp-wave approximation to holographic calculations in the AdS/CFT correspondence is proposed. By assuming the existence and some properties of string field theory (SFT) on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background, we extend the holographic ansatz proposed by Gubser, Klebanov, Polyakov and Witten to SFT level. We extract relevant information of assumed SFT on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ from its approximation, pp-wave SFT. As an explicit example, we perform string theoretic calculations of the conformal three point functions of the BMN operators. The results agree with the previ…
We find a Nekrasov-type expression for the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for the six-dimensional non-critical E_8 string theory toroidally compactified down to four dimensions. The prepotential represents the BPS partition function of the E_8 strings wound around one of the circles of the toroidal compactification with general winding numbers and momenta. We show that our expression exhibits expected modular properties. In particular, we prove that it obeys the modular anomaly equation known to be satisfied by the prepotential.
We examine the Kaluza-Klein theory for warped flux compactifications of type $II\ b $ string theory on a Minkowski spacetime $ M_4$ times a conic Calabi-Yau orientifold $X_6$. The region glued along the internal space directions to the bulk of $X_6$ is modeled by the warped undeformed conifold $\calc _6$. The resulting classical vacum solution of Klebanov-Tseytlin solution, valid at large radial distances from the conic singularity, describes a spacetime asymptotic to $ AdS_5 $ times the conifold compact base $ T^{1,1}$. The metric tensor, axio-dilaton and antisymmetric fields part of the 10-d…
We derive a formula for D3-brane charge on a compact spacetime, which includes torsion corrections to the tadpole cancellation condition. We use this to classify D-branes and RR fluxes in type II string theory on RP^3xRP^{2k+1}xS^{6-2k} with torsion H-flux and to demonstrate the conjectured T-duality to S^3xS^{2k+1}xS^{6-2k} with no flux. When k=1, H\neq 0 and so the K-theory that classifies fluxes is twisted. When k=2 the square of the H-flux yields an S-dual Freed-Witten anomaly which is canceled by a D3-brane insertion that ruins the K-theory classification. When k=3 the cube of H is nontri…
We compactify the M-theory proposed by Horava and Witten on a Calabi-Yau manifold with boundary $S_1/Z_2$. A no-scale-like Kähler potential, the superpotential, and the gauge kinetic function are obtained in this 4-dimensional $E_6\times E_8$ model. We also study the general phenomenological consequences of the resulting M-theory-inspired model, which may include very light gravitinos, axions and axinos.
We compute the full classical 4d scalar potential of type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds in the presence of fluxes and D6-branes. We show that it can be written as a bilinear form $V = Z^{AB} ρ_Aρ_B$, where the $ρ_A$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the 4-form fluxes of the 4d effective theory. The $ρ_A$ only depend on the internal fluxes, the axions and the topological data of the compactification, and are fully determined by the Freed-Witten anomalies of branes that appear as 4d string defects. The quadratic form $Z^{AB}$ only depends on the saxionic partners of these axions. In general, t…
Keeping N=1 supersymmetry in 4-dimension and in the leading order, we disuss the various orbifold compactifications of M-theory suggested by Horava and Witten on $T^6/Z_3$, $T^6/Z_6$, $T^6/Z_{12}$, and the compactification by keeping singlets under $SU(2)\times U(1)$ symmetry, then the compactification on $S^1/Z_2$. We also discuss the next to leading order Kähler potential, superpotential, and gauge kinetic function in the $Z_{12}$ case. In addition, we calculate the SUSY breaking soft terms and find out that the universality of the scalar masses will be violated, but the violation might be v…
