We consider a one-parameter family of composite fields -- bi-linear in the components of the stress-energy tensor -- which generalise the $\mathrm{T}\bar{\mathrm{T}}$ operator to arbitrary space-time dimension $d\geq 2$. We show that they induce a deformation of the classical action which is equivalent -- at the level of the dynamics -- to a field-dependent modification of the background metric tensor according to a specific flow equation. Even though the starting point is the flat space, the deformed metric is generally curved for any $d>2$, thus implying that the corresponding deformation can not be interpreted as a coordinate transformation. The central part of the paper is devoted to the development of a recursive algorithm to compute the coefficients of the power series expansion of the solution to the metric flow equation. We show that, under some quite restrictive assumptions on the stress-energy tensor, the power series yields an exact solution. Finally, we consider a class of theories in $d=4$ whose stress-energy tensor fulfils the assumptions above mentioned, namely the family of abelian gauge theories in $d=4$. For such theories, we obtain the exact expression of the deformed metric and the vierbein. In particular, the latter result implies that ModMax theory in a specific curved space is dynamically equivalent to its Born-Infeld-like extension in flat space. We also discuss a dimensional reduction of the latter theories from $d=4$ to $d=2$ in which an interesting marginal deformation of $d=2$ field theories emerges.
This is a pedagogical review on $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation of two dimensional quantum field theories. It is based on three lectures which the author gave at ITP-CAS in December 2018. This review consists of four parts. The first part is a general introduction to $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation. Special emphasises are put on the deformed classical Lagrangian and the exact solvability of the spectrum. The second part focuses on the torus partition sum of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$/$\mathrm{J}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformed conformal field theories and …
In this paper we study generic features of nonlocal charges obtained from marginal deformations of WZNW models. Using free-fields representations of CFTs based on simply laced Lie algebras, one can use simple arguments to build the nonlocal charges; but for more general Lie algebras these methods are not strong enough to be generally used. We propose a brute force calculation where the nonlocality is associated to a new Lie algebra valued field, and from this prescription we impose several constraints on the algebra of nonlocal charges. Possible applications for Yang-Baxter and holographic \(T…
$\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation was originally proposed as an irrelevant solvable deformation for 2d relativistic quantum field theories (QFTs). The same family of deformations can also be defined for integrable quantum spin chains which was first studied in the context of integrability in AdS/CFT. In this paper, we construct such deformations for yet another type of models, which describe a collection of particles moving in 1d and interacting in an integrable manner. The prototype of such models is the Lieb-Liniger model. This shows that such deformations can be defined for a ve…
We show that the $T \overline{T}$ deformation of two-dimensional quantum field theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ is well-defined and solvable at the quantum level. Flow equations for the energy spectrum and partition function are derived in analogy with the flat space case. As a non-trivial check, we perturbatively compute the deformed energy spectrum for the case of a free scalar field. We analyze the high energy density of states of the deformed theory and find a Hagedorn growth of states.
We perform the dynamical change of coordinates to derive a generalization of the trace relation and apply it to the non-linear Schrödinger model. After that, we work out the dimensional reduction of the bilinear $T\bar T$ operator and obtain the new $T\bar T$-like deformation of the quantum mechanics of free non-relativistic fermions and interacting Calogero-Sutherland particles. The deformation modifies the spectrum of the Hamiltonian but does not alter its eigenfunctions. The deformed classical Lagrangian is also obtained. Finally, we study a particular deformation of the two-dimensional Yan…
Integrable many-body systems of Ruijsenaars--Schneider--van Diejen type displaying action-angle duality are derived by Hamiltonian reduction of the Heisenberg double of the Poisson-Lie group $\mathrm{SU}(2n)$. New global models of the reduced phase space are described, revealing non-trivial features of the two systems in duality with one another. For example, after establishing that the symplectic vector space $\mathbb{C}^n\simeq\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ underlies both global models, it is seen that for both systems the action variables generate the standard torus action on $\mathbb{C}^n$, and the fixe…
We consider a gravitational perturbation of the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity with an arbitrary dilaton potential and study the condition under which the quadratic action can be seen as a $T\bar{T}$-deformation of the matter action. As a special case, the flat-space JT gravity discussed by Dubovsky et al[arXiv:1706.06604 ] is included. Another interesting example is a hyperbolic dilaton potential. This case is equivalent to a classical Liouville gravity with a negative cosmological constant and then a finite $T\bar{T}$-deformation of the matter action is realized as a gravitational perturbati…
We define three fundamental solvable bilinear deformations for any massive non-relativistic 2d quantum field theory (QFT). They include the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation and the recently introduced hard rod deformation. We show that all three deformations can be interpreted as coupling the non-relativistic QFT to a specific Newton-Cartan geometry, similar to the Jackiw-Teitelboim-like gravity in the relativistic case. Using the gravity formulations, we derive closed-form deformed classical Lagrangians of the Schrödinger model with a generic potential. We also extend the dynamic…
We consider gravitational perturbations of 2D dilaton gravity systems and show that these can be recast into $T\bar{T}$-deformations (at least) under certain conditions, where $T$ means the energy-momentum tensor of the matter field coupled to a dilaton gravity. In particular, the class of theories under this condition includes a Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) theory with a negative cosmological constant including conformal matter fields. This is a generalization of the preceding work on the flat-space JT gravity by S. Dubovsky, V. Gorbenko and M. Mirbabayi [arXiv:1706.06604].
We explore the $J\bar{T}$ and $T\bar{J}$ deformations of two-dimensional field theories possessing $\mathcal N=(0,1),(1,1)$ and $(0,2)$ supersymmetry. Based on the stress-tensor and flavor current multiplets, we construct various bilinear supersymmetric primary operators that induce the $J\bar{T}/T\bar{J}$ deformation in a manifestly supersymmetric way. Moreover, their supersymmetric descendants are shown to agree with the conventional $J\bar T /T\bar J$ operator on-shell. We also present some examples of $J\bar T /T\bar J$ flows arising from the supersymmetric deformation of free theories. Fi…
We present a BRST analysis of supersymmetry anomalies of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric quantum field theories with anomalous R symmetry. To this end, we consider the coupling of the matter theory to classical $\mathcal{N} = 1$ new minimal supergravity. We point out that a supersymmetry anomaly cocycle associated to the $\mathrm{U}(1){}_\mathrm{R}$ field does exist for this theory. It is non-trivial in the space of supergravity fields (and ghosts), but it becomes BRST-exact in the functional space that includes antifields. Equivalently, the $\mathrm{U}(1){}_\mathrm{R}$ supersymmetry anomaly …
In this paper, we shed new light onto $T\bar{T}$-deformations by engineering them on 2D surface defects, supporting chiral and antichiral CFT's, in a 4D Chern-Simons bulk. This approach is motivated by various connections between $T\bar{T}$-deformations, gravity and Chern-Simons theory and suggests that the formalism developed in this paper and the gravity picture of $T\bar{T}$-deformations should be closely related.
Very special $T\bar{J}$ deformations of a conformal field theory are irrelevant deformations that break the Lorentz symmetry but preserve the twisted Lorentz symmetry. We construct a holographic description of very special $T\bar{J}$ deformations. We give a holographic recipe to study the double trace as well as single trace deformations. The former is obtained from the change of the boundary condition while the latter is obtained from the change of the supergravity background.
The Yang-Baxter (YB) deformation is a systematic way of performibg integrable deformations of two-dimensional symmetric non-linear sigma models. The deformations can be labeled by classical $r$-matrices satisfying the classical YB equation. This YB deformation is also applicable to type IIB superstring theory defined on $\mathrm{AdS}_5\times S^5$. In this case, a simple class of YB deformation is associated with TsT transformations of string backgrounds. The data of this transformation is encoded in an antisymmetric bi-vector $Θ$ (which is often called $β$ field or non-commutativity parameter)…
In this paper, we continue the study of $T\bar{T}$ deformation in $d=1$ quantum mechanical systems and propose possible analogues of $J\bar{T}$ deformation and deformation by a general linear combination of $T\bar{T}$ and $J\bar{T}$ in quantum mechanics. We construct flow equations for the partition functions of the deformed theory, the solutions to which yields the deformed partition functions as integral of the undeformed partition function weighted by some kernels. The kernel formula turns out to be very useful in studying the deformed two-point functions and analyzing the thermodynamics of…

We consider the problem of exact integration of the $T\bar{T}$-deformation of two dimensional quantum field theories, as well as some higher dimensional extensions in the form of $\det T$-deformations. When the action can be shown to only depend algebraically on the background metric the solution of the deformation equation on the Lagrangian can be given in closed form in terms of solutions of the (extended) Burgers' equation. We present such examples in two and higher dimensions.
We study the holographic entanglement entropy of an interval in a quantum field theory obtained by deforming a holographic two-dimensional conformal field theory via a general linear combination of irrelevant operators that are closely related to, but nonetheless distinct from, $T{\bar T}, \ J{\bar T}$ and $T{\bar J}$, and compute the Casin-Huerta entropic $c$-function. We find that the entropic $c$-function is ultraviolet regulator independent, and along the renormalization group upflow towards the ultraviolet, it is non-decreasing. We show that the entropic $c$-function exhibits a power law …
We consider current-current deformations that generalise $T\bar{T}$ ones, and show that they may be also introduced for integrable spin chains. In analogy with the integrable QFT setup, we define the deformation as a modification of the S matrix in the Bethe equations. Using results by Bargheer, Beisert and Loebbert we show that the deforming operator is composite and constructed out of two currents on the lattice; its expectation value factorises like for $T\bar{T}$. Such a deformation may be considered for any combination of charges that preserve the model's integrable structure.
We show that the two-dimensional $N=(2,2)$ Volkov-Akulov action that describes the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry is a $T\bar{T}$ deformation of a free fermionic theory. Our findings point toward a possible relation between nonlinear supersymmetry and $T \bar T$ flows.
Recently, it has been found that JT gravity, which is a two-dimensional theory with bulk action $ -\frac{1}{2}\int {\mathrm d}^2x \sqrt gϕ(R+2)$, is dual to a matrix model, that is, a random ensemble of quantum systems rather than a specific quantum mechanical system. In this article, we argue that a deformation of JT gravity with bulk action $ -\frac{1}{2}\int {\mathrm d}^2x \sqrt g(ϕR+W(ϕ))$ is likewise dual to a matrix model. With a specific procedure for defining the path integral of the theory, we determine the density of eigenvalues of the dual matrix model. There is a simple answer if $…
We point out that negative specific heat at high energies is a characteristic feature of many TT-bar deformations, both in the original d = 2 case and in d = 1 quantum mechanical cousins. This note is a contribution to the memorial volume in honor of P. G. O. Freund.
We consider the irrelevant flow of classical Liouville field theory driven by the $T\bar T$ operator. After discussing properties of its exact action and equation of motion we construct an infinite set of conserved currents. We also find its vacuum solutions.
We investigate the "$T\bar{T}$" deformations of two-dimensional supersymmetric quantum field theories. More precisely, we show that, by using the conservation equations for the supercurrent multiplet, the $T\bar{T}$ deforming operator can be constructed as a supersymmetric descendant. Here we focus on $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetry. As an example, we analyse in detail the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of a free $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric action. We also argue that the link between $T\bar{T}$ and string theory can be extended to superstrings: by analysing the light-c…
We consider the most general set of integrable deformations extending the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of two-dimensional relativistic QFTs. They are CDD deformations of the theory's factorised S-matrix related to the higher-spin conserved charges. Using a mirror version of the generalised Gibbs ensemble, we write down the finite-volume expectation value of the higher-spin charges, and derive a generalised flow equation that every charge must obey under a generalised $T\bar{T}$ deformation. This also reproduces the known flow equations on the nose.
Recently, the ModMax theory has been proposed as a unique conformal nonlinear extension of electrodynamics. We have shown in [1] that this modification can be reproduced a marginal $T\bar{T}$-like deformation from pure Maxwell theory. Further, this deformation is solved by using a perturbative approach. In this letter, we will investigate another ModMax-like deformation for a two-dimensional (2D) scalar field theory. In this regard, we first find a marginal $T\bar{T}$-like deformation in two dimensions and then reproduce the MM-like Lagrangian from a multiple 2D scalar field theory.
In this paper, we present our study on the $T\bar{T}$-deformation of non-relativistic complex scalar field theory. We find the closed form of the deformed Lagrangian by using the perturbation and the method of characteristics. Furthermore we compute the exact energy spectrum of the deformed free theory by using the Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory in an appropriate regularization scheme.
We study a toy model of the Kerr/CFT correspondence using string theory on AdS$_3 \times S^3$. We propose a single trace irrelevant deformation of the dual CFT generated by a vertex operator with spacetime dimensions (2,1). This operator shares the same quantum numbers as the integrable $T\bar{J}$ deformation of two-dimensional CFTs where $\bar{J}$ is a chiral $U(1)$ current. We show that the deformation is marginal on the worldsheet and that the target spacetime is deformed to null warped AdS$_3$ upon dimensional reduction. We also calculate the spectrum of the deformed theory on the cylinder…
We analyse the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of 2d CFTs in a special double-scaling limit, of large central charge and small deformation parameter. In particular, we derive closed formulae for the deformation of the product of left and right moving CFT characters on the torus. It is shown that the $1/c$ contribution takes the same form as that of a CFT, but with rescalings of the modular parameter reflecting a state-dependent change of coordinates. We also extend the analysis for more general deformations that involve $T\bar{T}$, $J\bar{T}$ and $T\bar{J}$ simultaneously. We comment on the implication…
We investigate generic n-point correlation functions of conformal field theories (CFTs), with $T\bar{T}$ and $J\bar{T}$ deformations, in terms of the perturbative CFT approach. We systematically obtain the first order correction to the generic correlation functions of CFTs with $T\bar{T}$ or $J\bar{T}$ deformation. We compute the out-of-time ordered correlation function (OTOC) in the Ising model with $T\bar{T}$ or $J\bar{T}$ deformation, which confirms that these deformations do not change the integrable property up to the first order level.
Motivated by $T\bar T$, we introduce and study a wide class of solvable deformations of quantum-mechanical theories. These deformations map the Hamiltonian to a function of itself. We solve these theories by computing all finite-temperature correlation functions of the deformed theory in terms of the correlators of the undeformed theory. Applications to AdS/CFT, SYK, and the Schwarzian theory are considered. We write down the deformed Schwarzian action for an arbitrary Hamiltonian deformation and find that the maximal Lyapunov exponent is unchanged.
In this paper, we investigate the correlation functions of the conformal field theory (CFT) with the $T\bar{T}$ deformation on torus in terms of perturbative CFT approach, which is the extension of the previous investigations on correlation functions defined on a plane. We systematically obtain the first order correction to the correlation functions of the CFTs with $T\bar{T}$ deformation in both operator formalism and path integral language. As a consistency check, we compute the deformed partition function, namely the zero-point correlation function, up to the first order, which is consisten…
We study the UV dynamics of $μT \bar T$ deformed conformal field theories formulated as a deformation of generating functions. We explore the issue of non-perturbative completion of the $μ$ expansion by deriving an integral expression using the Fourier/Legendre transform technique, and show that it is more natural to impose Neumann, as opposed to the Dirichlet, boundary condition, for the metric at the cut-off surface recently proposed by McGough, Mezei, and Verlinde. We also comment on interesting connection to boundary conformal field theories.
We study the $T\bar T$ deformation on multiquantum mechanical systems. By introducing dynamical coordinate transformation, we reformulate the one-dimensional $T\bar T$ deformation of generic quantum mechanical systems, which is consistent with the previous proposal in the literature. We further study the thermo-field-double state under the $T\bar T$ deformation on these systems, which include the conformal quantum mechanical system, the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, and the model satisfying eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. We find common regenesis phenomena in which the signal injected into on…
In the paper, based on recent studies on $T\bar{T}$ deformation of 2D field theory with supersymmetry, we investigate the deformed correlation functions in $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ 2D superconformal field theories. Up to the leading order in perturbation theory, we compute the correlation functions under $T\bar{T}$ deformation. The correlation functions in these undeformed theories are almost known, and together with the help of superconformal Ward identity in $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ theories respectively we can obtain the correlation functions with opera…
In this note we study soliton, breather and shockwave solutions in certain two dimensional field theories. These include: (i) Heisenberg's model suggested originally to describe the scattering of high energy nucleons (ii) $T\bar T$ deformations of certain canonical scalar field theories with a potential. We find explicit soliton solutions of these models with sine-Gordon and Higgs-type potentials. We prove that the $T\bar T$ deformation of a theory of a given potential does not correct the mass of the soliton of the undeformed one. We further conjecture the form of breather solutions of these …
In recent years, there have been two independent but related developments in the study of irrelevant deformations in two dimensional quantum field theories (QFTs). The first development is the deformation of a two dimensional QFT by the determinant of the energy momentum stress tensor, commonly referred to as $T{\bar T}$ deformation. The second development is in two dimensional holographic field theories which are dual to string theory in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. In this latter development, the deformation is commonly referred to as single-trace $T{\bar T}$ deformation. …
In this letter, we investigate the deformation of the ModMax theory, as a unique Lagrangian of non-linear electrodynamics preserving both conformal and electromagnetic-duality invariance, under $T\bar{T}$-like flows. We will show that the deformed theory is the generalized non-linear Born-Infeld electrodynamics. Being inspired by the invariance under the flow equation for Born-Infeld theories, we propose another $T\bar{T}$-like operator generating the ModMax and generalized Born-Infeld non-linear electrodynamic theories from the usual Maxwell and Born-Infeld theories, respectively.
We study the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of the chiral bosons and show the equivalence between the chiral bosons of opposite chiralities and the scalar fields at the Hamiltonian level under the deformation. We also derive the deformed Lagrangian of more generic theories which contain an arbitrary number of chiral bosons to all orders. By using these results, we derive the $T\bar{T}$ deformed boundary action of the AdS$_3$ gravity theory in the Chern-Simons formulation. We compute the deformed one-loop torus partition function, which satisfies the $T\bar{T}$ flow equation up to the one-loop order. F…
We point out that two classes of deformations of integrable models, developed completely independently, have deep connections and share the same algebraic origin. One class includes the $T\bar T$-deformation of 1+1 dimensional integrable quantum field theory and related solvable irrelevant deformations proposed recently. The other class is a specific type of long range integrable deformation of quantum spin chains introduced a decade ago, in the context of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. We show that the detailed structures of the two deformations are formally identical and therefor…
We find the most general solution to Chern-Simons AdS$_3$ gravity in Fefferman-Graham gauge. The connections are equivalent to geometries that have a non-trivial curved boundary, characterized by a 2-dimensional vielbein and a spin connection. We define a variational principle for Dirichlet boundary conditions and find the boundary stress tensor in the Chern-Simons formalism. Using this variational principle as the departure point, we show how to treat other choices of boundary conditions in this formalism, such as, including the mixed boundary conditions corresponding to a $T \bar T$-deformat…
We investigate the behaviour of two-dimensional quantum field theories with $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry under a deformation induced by the `$T\bar{T}$' composite operator. We show that the deforming operator can be defined by a point-splitting regularisation in such a way as to preserve $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry. As an example of this construction, we work out the deformation of a free $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theory and compare to that induced by the Noether stress-energy tensor. Finally, we show that the $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetric deformed action actually possesses $\mathcal…

We consider the weighted average of a two dimensional CFT, whose target space is $T^2$, over its Narain moduli space. We take as the weighing function the integral kernel which gives rise to $T \bar T$ deformation when applied to the world sheet moduli data of the partition function viewed as vacuum amplitude when the world sheet is a torus. We compute the smeared partition function where this kernel is applied to the target space moduli. Smearing the partition function over the parameter space of a field theory generally leads to the breakdown in the ability to write the partition function as…
The Skyrme model, though it admits correctly a wide range of static properties of the nucleon, does not seem to reproduce properly the scattering behavior of nucleons at high energies. In this paper we present a $T\bar T$-like deformation of it, inspired by a 1+1 dimensional model, in which boosted nucleons behave like shock waves. The scattering of the latter saturates the Froissart bound. We start by showing that 1+1 dimensional $T\bar T$ deformations of the free abelian pion action are in fact generalizations of the old Heisenberg model for nucleon-nucleon scattering, yielding the same satu…
We consider KdV currents in a quantum field theory obtained by deforming a two dimensional conformal field theory on a cylinder via the irrelevant operator $T{\bar T}$. In this paper we determine their one-point functions modular properties. We find that the one-point functions factorize into two components each with a definite modular weight. We also obtain a general differential equation that the generalized torus partition sum satisfies.
The relationship between $T\bar{T}$ deformations and the uniform light-cone gauge, first noted in arXiv:1804.01998, provides a powerful generating technique for deformed models. We recall this construction, distinguishing between changes of the gauge frame, which do not affect the theory, and genuine deformations. We investigate the geometric interpretation of the latter and argue that they affect the global features of the geometry before gauge fixing. Exploiting a formal relation between uniform light-cone gauge and static gauge in a T-dual frame, we interpret such a change as a TsT transfor…
We define and study the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of a random matrix model, showing a consistent definition requires the inclusion of both the perturbative and non-perturbative solutions to the flow equation. The deformed model is well defined for arbitrary values of the coupling, exhibiting a phase transition for the critical value in which the spectrum complexifies. The transition is between a single and a double-cut phase, typically third order and in the same universality class as the Gross-Witten transition in lattice gauge theory. The $T\bar{T}$ deformation of a double scaled model is more …
We study the random geometry approach to the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of 2d conformal field theory developed by Cardy and discuss its realization in a gravity dual. In this representation, the gravity dual of the $T\bar{T}$ deformation becomes a straightforward translation of the field theory language. Namely, the dual geometry is an ensemble of AdS$_3$ spaces or BTZ black holes, without a finite cutoff, but instead with randomly fluctuating boundary diffeomorphisms. This reflects an increase in degrees of freedom in the renormalization group flow to the UV by the irrelevant $T\bar{T}$ operator.…
