Letting~$N=\left\{N(t), t\geq0\right\}$ be a standard Poisson process, Stroock~ \cite{Stroock-1981} constructed a family of continuous processes by $$Θ_ε(t)=\int_0^tθ_ε(r)dr, \ \ \ \ \ 0 \le t \le 1,$$ where $θ_ε(r)=\frac{1}ε(-1)^{N(ε^{-2}r)}$, and proved that it weakly converges to a standard Brownian motion under the continuous function topology. We establish the functional large deviations principle (LDP) for the approximations of a class of Gaussian processes constructed by integrals over $Θ_ε(t)$, and find the explicit form for rate function.
As an application, we consider the following (non-Markovian) stochastic differential equation \begin{equation*} \begin{aligned} X^ε(t) &=x_{0}+\int^{t}_{0}b(X^ε(s))ds+λ(ε)\int^{t}_{0}σ(X^ε(s))dΘ_ε(s), \end{aligned} \end{equation*} where $b$ and $σ$ are both Lipschitz functions, and establish its Freidlin-Wentzell type LDP as $ε\rightarrow 0$. The rate function indicates a phase transition phenomenon as $λ(ε)$ moves from one region to the other.
We investigate the Large Deviation behavior in small time of continuous Gaussian processes. We introduce a general procedure allowing to derive Large Deviation Principles in small time starting from the well understood context of Large Deviation Principles with a small parameter, going beyond the self-similar case. Several motivating examples are also treated.
We study large deviation principles for Gaussian processes lifted to the free nilpotent group of step N. We apply this to a large class of Gaussian processes lifted to geometric rough paths. A large deviation principle for enhanced (fractional) Brownian motion, in Hoelder- or modulus topology, appears as special case.
The probability of the small deviations of the matrix $AA^T$ determinant is estimated, where $A$ is an $n\times\infty$ random matrix with centered entries having joint Gaussian distribution. The inequality obtained is sharp in a sence.
A moderate deviation principle for nonlinear functions of Gaussian processes is established. The nonlinear functions need not be locally bounded. Especially, the logarithm is allowed. (Thus, small deviations of the process are relevant.) Both discrete and continuous time is treated. An integrable power-like decay of the correlation function is assumed.
We prove a full large deviations principle in large time, for a diffusion process with random drift V, which is a centered Gaussian shear flow random field. The large deviations principle is established in a ``quenched'' setting, i.e. is valid almost surely in the randomness of V.
The problem of (pathwise) large deviations for conditionally continuous Gaussian processes is investigated. The theory of large deviations for Gaussian processes is extended to the wider class of random processes -- the conditionally Gaussian processes. The estimates of level crossing probability for such processes are given as an application.
We establish large deviations estimates for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices with sub-Gaussian entries. Under technical assumptions, we show that the large deviation behavior of the largest eigenvalue is universal for small deviations, in the sense that the speed and the rate function are the same as in the case of the GOE. In contrast, in the regime of very large deviations, we obtain a non-universal rate function and we prove that the associated eigenvector is localized given the large deviation event, thus establishing the existence of a transition between two different large devia…
We study the a.s. sample path regularity of Gaussian processes. To this end we relate the path regularity directly to the theory of small deviations. In particular, we show that if the process is $n$-times differentiable then the exponential rate of decay of its small deviations is at most $\varepsilon^{-1/n}$. We also show a similar result if $n$ is not an integer.
We give two examples of periodic Gaussian processes, having entropy numbers of exactly same order but radically different small deviations. Our construction is based on classical Knopp's result yielding of existence of continuous nowhere differentiable functions, and more precisely on Loud's functions. We also obtain a general lower bound for small deviations using the majorizing measure method. We show on examples that our bound is sharp. We also apply it to Gaussian independent sequences and to the generic class of ultrametric Gaussian processes. 60F15, 60G50 ; Secondary: 60F05
We consider an iterated Kolmogorov diffusion $X_{t}$ of step $n$. The small ball problem for $X_{t}$ is solved by means of the Gaussian correlation inequality. We also prove Chung's laws of iterated logarithm for $X_{t}$ both at time zero and infinity.
This paper is devoted to the Gaussian fluctuations and deviations of the traces of tridiagonal random matrix. Under quite general assumptions, we prove that the traces are approximately normal distributed. Multi-dimensional central limit theorem is also obtained here. These results have several applications to various physical models and random matrix models, such as the Anderson model, the random birth-death Markov kernel, the random birth-death $Q$ matrix and the $β$-Hermite ensemble. Furthermore, under some independent and identically distributed condition, we also prove the large deviation…
We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, namely such that the distribution tails $\mathbb{P}( |X_{1,1}|>t)$ and $\mathbb{P}(|X_{1,2}|>t)$ behave like $e^{-bt^α}$ and $e^{-at^α}$ respectively for some $a,b\in (0,+\infty)$ and $α\in (0,2)$. The large deviation principle is of speed $N^{α/2}$ and with a good rate function depending only on the tail distribution of the entries.
We construct a quasi-sure version (in the sense of Malliavin) of geometric rough paths associated with a Gaussian process with long-time memory. As an application we establish a large deviation principle (LDP) for capacities for such Gaussian rough paths. Together with Lyons' universal limit theorem, our results yield immediately the corresponding results for pathwise solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by such Gaussian process in the sense of rough paths. Moreover, our LDP result implies the result of Yoshida on the LDP for capacities over the abstract Wiener space associate…
We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral measure of a sample covariance matrix with sub-Gaussian entries, which extends Bordenave and Caputo's result for Wigner matrices having the same type of entries [7]. To this aim, we need to establish an asymptotic freeness result for rectangular free convolution, more precisely, we give a bound in the subordination formula for information-plus-noise matrices.
We consider the Gaussian beta-ensemble when $β$ scales with $n$ the number of particles such that $\displaystyle{{n}^{-1}\ll β\ll 1}$. Under a certain regime for $β$, we show that the largest particle satisfies a large deviations principle in $\mathbb{R}$ with speed $nβ$ and explicit rate function. As a consequence, the largest particle converges in probability to $2$, the rightmost point of the semicircle law.
We prove large deviation principles for $\int_0^t γ(X_s)ds$, where $X$ is a $d$-dimensional self-similar Gaussian process and $γ(x)$ takes the form of the Dirac delta function $δ(x)$, $|x|^{-β}$ with $β\in (0,d)$, or $\prod_{i=1}^d |x_i|^{-β_i}$ with $β_i\in(0,1)$. In particular, large deviations are obtained for the functionals of $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion, sub-fractional Brownian motion and bi-fractional Brownian motion. As an application, the critical exponential integrability of the functionals is discussed.
In this paper, we consider a quasi-linear stochastic heat equation on $[0,1]$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions and controlled by the space-time white noise. We formally replace the random perturbation by a family of noisy inputs depending on a parameter $n\in \mathbb{N}$ such that approximate the white noise in some sense. Then, we provide sufficient conditions ensuring that the real-valued {\it mild} solution of the SPDE perturbed by this family of noises converges in law, in the space $\mathcal{C}([0,T]\times [0,1])$ of continuous functions, to the solution of the white noise driven SPDE.…
We investigate the small deviation probabilities of a class of very smooth stationary Gaussian processes playing an important role in Bayesian statistical inference. Our calculations are based on the appropriate modification of the entropy method due to Kuelbs, Li, and Linde as well as on classical results about the entropy of classes of analytic functions. They also involve Tsirelson's upper bound for small deviations and shed some light on the limits of sharpness for that estimate.
A continuous-time regression model with a jointly strictly sub-Gaussian random noise is considered in the paper. Upper exponential bounds for probabilities of large deviations of the least squares estimator for the regression parameter are obtained.
In rough stochastic PDE theory of Hairer type, rough path lifts with respect to the space variable of two-parameter continuous Gaussian processes play a main role. A prominent example of such processes is the solution of the stochastic heat equation under the periodic condition. The main objective of this paper is to show that the law of the spatial lift of this process satisfies a Schilder type large deviation principle on the continuous path space over a geometric rough path space.
We study the limiting behavior of the $k$-th eigenvalue $x_k$ of unitary invariant ensembles with Freud-type and uniform convex potentials. As both $k$ and $n-k$ tend to infinity, we obtain Gaussian fluctuations for $x_k$ in the bulk and soft edge cases, respectively. Multi-dimensional central limit theorems, as well as moderate deviations, are also proved. This work generalizes earlier results in the GUE and unitary invariant ensembles with monomial potentials of even degree. In particular, we obtain the precise asymptotics of corresponding Christoffel-Darboux kernels as well.
We study deviation probabilities for the number of high positioned particles in branching Brownian motion, and confirm a conjecture of Derrida and Shi (2016). We also solve the corresponding problem for the two-dimensional discrete Gaussian free field. Our method relies on an elementary inequality for inhomogeneous Galton-Watson processes.
We apply Lindeberg's method, invented to prove a central limit theorem, to analyze the moderate deviations around such a central limit theorem. In particular, we will show moderate deviation principles for martingales as well as for random sums, in the latter situation both, in the case when the limit distribution is Gaussian or non-Gaussian. Moreover in the Gaussian case we show moderate deviations for random sums using bounds on cumulants, alternatively. Finally, we also prove a large deviation principle for certain random sums.
Motivated by the general matrix deviation inequality for i.i.d ensemble Gaussian matrix, we study its universality property. As a starting point for this problem, we show that this property holds for $\ell_{p}$-norm with $1\leq p< \infty$ and i.i.d ensemble sub-Gaussian random matrix, which is a random matrix with i.i.d mean-zero, unit variance, sub-Gaussian entries.
We consider the small deviation probabilities (SDP) for sums of stationary Gaussian sequences. For the cases of constant boundaries and boundaries tending to zero, we obtain quite general results. For the case of the boundaries tending to infinity, we focus our attention on the discrete analogs of the fractional Brownian motion (FBM). It turns out that the lower bounds for the SDP can be transferred from the well studied FBM caseto the discrete time setting under the usual assumptions that imply weak convergence while the transfer of the corresponding upper bounds necessarily requires a deeper…
The paper deals with the asymptotic behavior of the bridge of a Gaussian process conditioned to stay in $n$ fixed points at $n$ fixed past instants. In particular, functional large deviation results are stated for small time. Several examples are considered: integrated or not fractional Brownian motion, $m$-fold integrated Brownian motion. As an application, the asymptotic behavior of the exit probability is studied and used for the practical purpose of the numerical computation, via Monte Carlo methods, of the hitting probability up to a given time.
We investigate small deviation properties of Gaussian random fields in the space $L_q(\R^N,μ)$ where $μ$ is an arbitrary finite compactly supported Borel measure. Of special interest are hereby "thin" measures $μ$, i.e., those which are singular with respect to the $N$--dimensional Lebesgue measure; the so--called self--similar measures providing a class of typical examples. For a large class of random fields (including, among others, fractional Brownian motions), we describe the behavior of small deviation probabilities via numerical characteristics of $μ$, called mixed entropy, characterizin…
In this paper, we consider the distribution of the supremum of non-stationary Gaussian processes, and present a new theoretical result on the asymptotic behaviour of this distribution. Unlike previously known facts in this field, our main theorem yields the asymptotic representation of the corresponding distribution function with exponentially decaying remainder term. This result can be efficiently used for studying the projection density estimates, based, for instance, on Legendre polynomials. More precisely, we construct the sequence of accompanying laws, which approximates the distribution …
We study a single server FIFO queue that offers general service. Each of n customers enter the queue at random time epochs that are inde- pendent and identically distributed. We call this the random scattering traffic model, and the queueing model RS/G/1. We study the workload process associated with the queue in two different settings. First, we present Gaussian process approximations in a high intensity asymptotic scale and characterize the transient distribution of the approximation. Second, we study the rare event paths of the workload by proving a large deviations principle in the same hi…
We establish a large-deviations principle for the largest eigenvalue of a generalized sample covariance matrix, meaning a matrix proportional to $Z^T ΓZ$, where $Z$ has i.i.d. real or complex entries and $Γ$ is not necessarily the identity. We treat the classical case when $Z$ is Gaussian and $Γ$ is positive definite, but we also cover two orthogonal extensions: Either the entries of $Z$ can instead be sharp sub-Gaussian, a class including Rademacher and uniform distributions, where we find the same rate function as for the Gaussian model; or $Γ$ can have negative eigenvalues if $Z$ remains Ga…
We prove two theorems concerning extreme values of general Gaussian fields. Our first theorem concerns with the concept of multiple peaks. A theorem of Chatterjee states that when a centered Gaussian field admits the so-called superconcentration property, it typically attains values near its maximum on multiple near-orthogonal sites, known as multiple peaks. We improve his theorem in two aspects: (i) the number of peaks attained by our bound is of the order $\exp(c / σ^2)$ (as opposed to Chatterjee's polynomial bound in $1/σ$), where $σ$ is the standard deviation of the supremum of the Gaussia…
Several classical results on boundary crossing probabilities of Brownian motion and random walks are extended to asymptotically Gaussian random fields, which include sums of i.i.d. random variables with multidimensional indices, multivariate empirical processes, and scan statistics in change-point and signal detection as special cases. Some key ingredients in these extensions are moderate deviation approximations to marginal tail probabilities and weak convergence of the conditional distributions of certain ``clumps'' around high-level crossings. We also discuss how these results are related t…
Let $U=(U_k)_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}$ be a centered Gaussian stationary sequence satisfying some minor regularity condition. We study the asymptotic behavior of its weighted $\ell_2$-norm small deviation probabilities. It is shown that \[ \ln \mathbb{P}\left( \sum_{k\in\mathbb{Z}} d_k^2 U_k^2 \leq \varepsilon^2\right) \sim - M \varepsilon^{-\frac{2}{2p-1}}, \qquad \textrm{ as } \varepsilon\to 0, \] whenever \[ d_k\sim d_{\pm} |k|^{-p}\quad \textrm{for some } p>\frac{1}{2} \, , \quad k\to \pm\infty, \] using the arguments based on the spectral theory of pseudo-differential operators by M. Birman and M…
This article revisits the work by Ofer Zeitouni and Steve Zelditch on large deviations for the empirical measures of random orthogonal polynomials with i.i.d. Gaussian complex coefficients, and extends this result to real Gaussian coefficients. This article does not require any knowledge in geometry. For clarity, we focus on two classical cases: Kac polynomials and elliptic polynomials.
We present a large deviation principle at speed N for the largest eigenvalue of some additively deformed Wigner matrices. In particular this includes Gaussian ensembles with full-rank general deformation. For the non-Gaussian ensembles, the deformation should be diagonal, and we assume that the laws of the entries have sharp sub-Gaussian Laplace transforms and satisfy certain concentration properties. For these latter ensembles we establish the large deviation principle in a restricted range $(-\infty, x_c)$, where $x_c$ depends on the deformation only and can be infinite.
This paper considers Gaussian flows multiplexed in a queueing network. A single node being a useful but often incomplete setting, we examine more advanced models. We focus on a (two-node) tandem queue, fed by a large number of Gaussian inputs. With service rates and buffer sizes at both nodes scaled appropriately, Schilder's sample-path large-deviations theorem can be applied to calculate the asymptotics of the overflow probability of the second queue. More specifically, we derive a lower bound on the exponential decay rate of this overflow probability and present an explicit condition for the…
Employing the optimal fluctuation method (OFM), we study the large deviation function of long-time averages $(1/T)\int_{-T/2}^{T/2} x^n(t) dt$, $n=1,2, \dots$, of centered stationary Gaussian processes. These processes are correlated and, in general, non-Markovian. We show that the anomalous scaling with time of the large-deviation function, recently observed for $n>2$ for the particular case of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, holds for a whole class of stationary Gaussian processes.
We find the logarithmic small ball asymptotics for the $L_2$-norm with respect to a degenerate self-similar measures of a certain class of Gaussian processes including Brownian motion, Ornstein - Uhlenbeck process and their integrated counterparts.
We establish a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of a rank one deformation of a matrix from the GUE or GOE. As a corollary, we get another proof of the phenomenon, well-known in learning theory and finance, that the largest eigenvalue separates from the bulk if the perturbation is large enough. A large part of the paper is devoted to an auxiliary result on the continuity of spherical integrals, in the case when one of the matrix is of rank one, as studied in a previous work.
We consider an acyclic network of single-server queues with heterogeneous processing rates. It is assumed that each queue is fed by the superposition of a large number of i.i.d. Gaussian processes with stationary increments and positive drifts, which can be correlated across different queues. The flow of work departing from each server is split deterministically and routed to its neighbors according to a fixed routing matrix, with a fraction of it leaving the network altogether. We study the exponential decay rate of the probability that the steady-state queue length at any given node in the n…
We present large deviations principles for the moments of the empirical spectral measure of Wigner matrices and empirical measure of $β$-ensembles in three cases : the case of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, that is Wigner matrices whose entries have tail distributions decreasing as $e^{-ct^α}$, for some constant $c>0$ and with $α\in (0,2)$, the case of Gaussian Wigner matrices, and the case of $β$-ensembles associated with a convex potential with polynomial growth.
We extend results of Zeitouni-Zelditch on large deviations principles for zeros of Gaussian random polynomials $s$ in one complex variable to certain non-Gaussian ensembles that we call $P(ϕ)_2$ random polynomials. The probability measures are of the form $e^{- S(f)} df$ where the actions $S(f)$ are finite dimensional analgoues of those of $P(ϕ)_2$ quantum field theory. The speed and rate function are the same as in the associated Gaussian case. As a corollary, we prove that the expected distribution of zeros in the $P(ϕ)_2$ ensembles tends to the same equilibrium measure as in the Gaussian ca…
We introduce time-inhomogeneous stochastic volatility models, in which the volatility is described by a nonnegative function of a Volterra type continuous Gaussian process that may have very rough sample paths. The main results obtained in the paper are sample path and small-noise large deviation principles for the log-price process in a time-inhomogeneous super rough Gaussian model under very mild restrictions. We use these results to study the asymptotic behavior of binary barrier options, exit time probability functions, and call options.
In this article we consider Wigner matrices $X_N$ with variance profiles (also called Wigner-type matrices) which are of the form $X_N(i,j) = σ(i/N,j/N) a_{i,j} / \sqrt{N}$ where $σ$ is a symmetric real positive function of $[0,1]^2$ and $σ$ will be taken either continuous or piecewise constant. We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of those matrices under the same condition of sharp sub-Gaussian bound and for some other assumptions on $σ$. These sub-Gaussian bounds are verified for example for Gaussian variables, Rademacher variables or uniform variables on $[- \sqrt…
We study the small deviation probabilities of a family of very smooth self-similar Gaussian processes. The canonical process from the family has the same scaling property as standard Brownian motion and plays an important role in the study of zeros of random polynomials. Our estimates are based on the entropy method, discovered in Kuelbs and Li (1992) and developed further in Li and Linde (1999), Gao (2004), and Aurzada et al. (2009). While there are several ways to obtain the result w.r.t. the $L_2$ norm, the main contribution of this paper concerns the result w.r.t. the supremum norm. In thi…
We consider $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices with i.i.d. entries $X_{ij}$ whose tail probabilities $\mathbb {P}(|X_{ij}|\geq t)$ behave like $e^{-at^α}$ for some $a>0$ and $α\in(0,2)$. We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral measure of $X/\sqrt{n}$ with speed $n^{1+α/2}$ with a good rate function $J(μ)$ that is finite only if $μ$ is of the form $μ=μ_{\mathrm{sc}}\boxplusν$ for some probability measure $ν$ on $\mathbb {R}$, where $\boxplus$ denotes the free convolution and $μ_{\mathrm{sc}}$ is Wigner's semicircle law. We obtain explicit expressions for $J(μ_{\mathrm{sc…
For Laplacian models in dimension $(1+1)$ we derive sample path large deviations for the profile height function, that is, we study scaling limits of Gaussian integrated random walks and Gaussian integrated random walk bridges perturbed by an attractive force towards the zero-level, called pinning. We study in particular the regime when the rate functions of the corresponding large deviation principles admit more than one minimiser, in our models either two, three, or five minimiser depending on the pinning strength and the boundary conditions. This study complements corresponding large deviat…
We study stochastic volatility models in which the volatility process is a function of a continuous fractional stochastic process, which is an integral transform of the solution of an SDE satisfying the Yamada-Watanabe condition. We establish a small-noise large deviation principle for the log-price, and, for a special case of our setup, obtain logarithmic call price asymptotics for large strikes.
A moderate deviation principle as well as moderate and large deviation inequalities for a sequence of elements living inside a fixed Wiener chaos associated with an isonormal Gaussian process are shown. The conditions under which the results are derived coincide with those of the celebrated fourth moment theorem of Nualart and Peccati. The proofs rely on sharp estimates for cumulants. As applications, explosive integrals of a Brownian sheet, a discretized version of the quadratic variation of a fractional Brownian motion and the sample bispectrum of a spherical Gaussian random field are consid…
