The last decades have witnessed an unprecedented advancement in our knowledge of the large scale universe. In particular, increasingly accurate cosmological observations have allowed us to discover a form of "dark energy", which presently dominates the expansion of the universe. On the other hand, fundamental problems in the standard cosmological model point towards the possibility of a primordial inflationary period. Both these expansion phases have in common the fact that they should be governed by forms of energy with properties much similar to those of vacuum energy of classical or quantum fields. In the meanwhile, quantum field theory in curved spaces (QFTCS) has proved a rich framework to analyze phenomena of a quantum nature in regimes where spacetime curvature is relevant, but not too extreme; particularly, it yields novel insights on the structure and dynamics of quantum vacuum. In this dissertation, we make a thorough exposition of the fundamentals of QFTCS and present some of its applications in cosmological spacetimes. Particular attention is given to the construction of an empirical notion of particles through an idealized model of particle detectors, and to the phenomenon of particle creation in expanding FLRW spacetimes. Further, we develop the procedure of adiabatic renormalization, and use it to compute the renormalized stress tensor in these spacetimes. For a noninteracting scalar field in de Sitter spaces, we find that it takes the form of a cosmological constant, although a quantitatively self-consistent value with the background expansion can only be found at Planckian densities. We also present a construction of a simple inflationary model, driven by a self-interacting classical scalar field, and show how the quantized fluctuations of this field could give rise to a nearly scale-invariant power spectrum, like the one that is currently observed in the CMB.
The stability of the chromomagnetic Savvidy vacuum in QCD under the influence of positive Riemannian curvature is studied. The heat traces of the operators relevant to SO(2) gauge-invariant Yang-Mills fields and Faddeev-Popov ghosts are calculated on product spaces of S^2 and S^1 \times S^1. It is shown that the chromomagnetic vacuum with covariantly constant chromomagnetic field is stable in a certain set of radii and field strengths.
We propose a distinguished set of positive and negative energy modes of the Klein-Gordon equation as a time independent definition of the vacuum state of a quantized scalar field.
Standard pedagogy treats topics in general relativity (GR) in terms of tensor formulations in curved space-time. Although mathematically straightforward, the curved space-time approach can seem abstruse to beginning students due to the degree of mathematical sophistication required. As a heuristic tool to provide insight into what is meant by a curved metric, we present a polarizable-vacuum (PV) representation of GR derived from a model by Dicke and related to the "TH-epsilon-mu" formalism used in comparative studies of gravitational theories.
The Schrodinger picture description of vacuum states in curved spacetime is further developed. General solutions for the vacuum wave functional are given for both static and dynamic (Bianchi type I) spacetimes and for conformally static spacetimes of Robertson-Walker type. The formalism is illustrated for simple cosmological models with time-dependent metrics and the phenomenon of particle creation is related to a special form of the kernel in the vacuum wave functional.
We consider the cosmology of a 3-brane universe, in a five dimensional space time (Bulk). We present some solutions to the five-dimensional Einstein equation, where a perfect fluid is confined to the 3-brane. We investigate the evolution of brane for two models of bulk. We choose ordinary and modified polytropic gas in brane and it is seen that these models have some new features.
A calculation of the one-mode occupation numbers for vacuum fluctuations of massive fields in De Sitter space shows that their use for the generation of classical density perturbations in inflationary cosmology very much depends on their masses and conformal couplings. A new mechanism for the decoherence of relatively massive fields has been identified. A similar analysis of the power law inflation shows that production of adiabatic density perturbations may not take place in models with power p < 3.
In a recent paper, general solutions for the vacuum wave functionals in the Schrodinger picture were given for a variety of classes of curved spacetimes. Here, we describe a number of simple examples which illustrate how the presence of spacetime boundaries influences the vacuum wave functional and how physical quantities are independent of the choice of spacetime foliation used in the Schrodinger approach despite the foliation dependence of the wave functionals themselves.
Three different methods viz. i) a perturbative analysis of the Schrödinger equation ii) abstract differential geometric method and iii) a semiclassical reduction of the Wheeler-Dewitt equation, relating Pancharatnam phase to vacuum instability are discussed. An improved semiclassical reduction is also shown to yield the correct zeroth order semicalssical Einstein equations with backreaction. This constitutes an extension of our earlier discussions on the topic
In this article we investigated the influence of the gravity induced higher dimensional operators on the issue of vacuum stability in a model containing two interacting scalar fields. As a framework we used the curved spacetime Effective Field Theory (cEFT) applied to the aforementioned system in which one of the scalars is heavy. After integrating out the heavy scalar we used the standard Euclidean approach to the obtained cEFT. Apart from analyzing the influence of standard operators like the non-minimal coupling to gravity and the dimension six contribution to the scalar field potential, we…
Dark energy is one of the greatest scientific mysteries of today. The idea that dark energy originates from quantum vacuum fluctuations has circulated since the late '60s, but theoretical estimations of vacuum energy have disagreed with the measured value by many orders of magnitude, until recently. Lifshitz theory applied to cosmology has produced the correct order of magnitude for dark energy. Furthermore, the theory is based on well-established and experimentally well-tested grounds in atomic, molecular and optical physics. In this paper, we confront Lifshitz cosmology with astronomical dat…
Introducing a variable cosmological function $Λ(t)$ in a geometrical manner from a 5D Riemann-flat metric, we investigate the possibility of having a geometrical criterion to choose a suitable cosmological function $Λ(t)$ for every 4D dynamical hypersurface capable of generate phantom cosmologies.
We examine in a cosmological context the conditions for unbroken supersymmetry in N=1 supergravity in D=10 dimensions. We show that the cosmological solutions of the equations of motion obtained considering only the bosonic sector correspond to vacuum states with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. With a non vanishing gravitino-dilatino condensate we find a solution of the equations of motion that satisfies necessary conditions for unbroken supersymmetry and that smoothly interpolates between Minkowski space and DeSitter space with a linearly growing dilaton, thus providing a possible example…
The canonical quantization of the most general minisuperspace actions --i.e. with all six scale factor as well as the lapse function and the shift vector present-- describing the vacuum type II, VI and VII geometries, is considered. The reduction to the corresponding physical degrees of freedom is achieved through the usage of the linear constraints as well as the quantum version of the entire set of classical integrals of motion.
I examine the interpretation of photon redshifts in curved spacetime, as being gravitational or Doppler in origin. In Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime, redshifts between comoving observers are often attributed to "expanding space", whereas in Schwarzschild spacetime, redshifts between static observers are attributed to "gravitational" causes. Yet various authors have suggested a freely falling observer congruence would interpret any redshift as Doppler, whereas a rigid congruence must interpret it as gravitational since there is no relative motion. I realise this proposal by expli…
We explore the possibility of a non-singular bounce in our universe from a warped braneworld scenario with dynamical branes and a non-zero brane cosmological constant. Such models naturally incorporate a scalar sector known as the radion originating from the modulus of the theory. The presence of brane cosmological constant renders the branes to be non-flat and gives rise to a potential and a non-canonical kinetic term for the radion field in the four dimensional effective action. The kinetic term exhibits a phantom-like behavior within the domain of evolution of the modulus which leads to a v…
We argue that calculating vacuum energy requires quantum field theory whose axioms are adapted to curved spacetime. In this context, we suggest that non-zero vacuum energy is connected to dynamical breaking of electroweak symmetry. The observed meV scale can be understood in terms of electroweak physics via a naive estimate. The scenario requires all particle masses to have a dynamical origin. Any Higgs particle has to be a composite, and the origin of vacuum energy might be probed at the LHC.
In this paper we construct new solutions of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet field equations in an isotropic Shiromizu-Maeda-Sasaki brane-world setting which represent a couple of $Z_2$-symmetric vacuum thin shells splitting from the central brane, and explore the main properties of the dynamics of the system. The matching of the separating vacuum shells with the brane-world is as smooth as possible and all matter fields are restricted to the brane. We prove the existence of these solutions, derive the criteria for their existence, analyse some fundamental aspects or their evolution and demonstrate t…
An analysis of the decoherence of quantum fluctuations shows that production of classical adiabatic density perturbations may not take place in models of power-law inflation with power 1< p < 3. Some consequences for models of extended inflation are pointed out. In general, the condition for decoherence places new constraint on inflationary models, which does not depend on often complicated subsequent evolution.
The existence of point symmetries in the cosmological field equations of generalized vacuum scalar--tensor theories is considered within the context of the spatially homogeneous cosmologies. It is found that such symmetries only occur in the Brans--Dicke theory when the dilaton field self--interacts. Moreover, the interaction potential of the dilaton must take the form of a cosmological constant. For the spatially flat, isotropic model, it is shown how this point symmetry may be employed to generate a discrete scale factor duality in the Brans--Dicke action.
Starting from a five-dimensional (5D) vacuum theory of gravity where the extra coordinate is considered as noncompact, we investigate the possibility of inducing four-dimensional (4D) phantom scenarios by applying form-invariance symmetry transformations. In particular we obtain phantom scenarios for two cosmological frameworks. In the first framework we deal with an induced 4D de-Sitter expansion and in the second one a 4D induced model where the expansion of the universe is dominated by a decreasing cosmological parameter $Λ(t)$ is discussed.
To make sense of quantum field theory in an arbitrary (globally hyperbolic) curved spacetime, the theory must be formulated in a local and covariant manner in terms of locally measureable field observables. Since a generic curved spacetime does not possess symmetries or a unique notion of a vacuum state, the theory also must be formulated in a manner that does not require symmetries or a preferred notion of a ``vacuum state'' and ``particles''. We propose such a formulation of quantum field theory, wherein the operator product expansion (OPE) of the quantum fields is elevated to a fundamental …
For quantum fields on a curved spacetime with an Euclidean section, we derive a general expression for the stress energy tensor two-point function in terms of the effective action. The renormalized two-point function is given in terms of the second variation of the Mellin transform of the trace of the heat kernel for the quantum fields. For systems for which a spectral decomposition of the wave opearator is possible, we give an exact expression for this two-point function. Explicit examples of the variance to the mean ratio $Δ' = (<ρ^2>-<ρ>^2)/(<ρ>^2)$ of the vacuum energy density $ρ$ of a mas…
Several situations of physical importance may be modelled by linear quantum fields propagating in fixed spacetime-dependent classical background fields. For example, the quantum Dirac field in a strong and/or time-dependent external electromagnetic field accounts for the creation of electron-positron pairs out of the vacuum. Also, the theory of linear quantum fields propagating on a given background curved spacetime is the appropriate framework for the derivation of black-hole evaporation (Hawking effect) and for studying the question whether or not it is possible in principle to manufacture a…
We investigate the role played by the vacuum of the primordial fluctuations in hybrid Loop Quantum Cosmology. We consider scenarios where the inflaton potential is a mass term and the unperturbed quantum geometry is governed by the effective dynamics of Loop Quantum Cosmology. In this situation, the phenomenologically interesting solutions have a preinflationary regime where the kinetic energy of the inflaton dominates over the potential. For these kind of solutions, we show that the primordial power spectra depend strongly on the choice of vacuum. We study in detail the case of adiabatic stat…
We study tensor perturbations around the most general cosmologically symmetric backgrounds in a class of teleparallel gravity theories known as New General Relativity. These theories comprise a one-parameter class, which is fully consistent with observations at the post-Newtonian level, and which contains the teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity as a special case. We find that for a particular class of cosmological background geometries these theories exhibit gravitational wave birefringence and dispersion, i.e., the dispersion relation for gravitational waves depends on their polariz…
The second order Ordinary Differential Equation which describes the unknown part of the solution space of some vacuum Bianchi Cosmologies is completely integrated for Type III, thus obtaining the general solution to Einstein's Field Equations for this case, with the aid of the sixth Painlevé transcendent $P_{VI}$. For particular representations of $P_{VI}$ we obtain the known Kinnersley two-parameter space-time and a solution of Euclidean signature. The imposition of the space-time generalization of a "hidden" symmetry of the generic Type III spatial slice, enables us to retrieve the two-param…
In this work, we consider effects of the dynamical vacuum in quantum cosmology in presence of a minimum length introduced by the GUP (generalized uncertainty principle) related to the modified commutation relation $[\hat{X},\hat{P}] := \frac{i\hbar}{ 1 - β\hat{P}^2 }$ . We determine the wave function of the Universe $ ψ_{qp}(ξ,t)$, which is solution of the modified Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the representation of the quasi-position space, in the limit where the scale factor of the Universe is small. Although $ψ_{qp}(ξ,t)$ is a physically acceptable state it is not a realizable state of the Uni…
We study a supersymmetric model in curved background spacetime. We calculate the effective action and the vacuum expectation value of the energy momentum tensor using a covariant regularization procedure. A soft supersymmetry breaking induces a nonzero contribution to the vacuum energy density and pressure. Assuming the presence of a cosmic fluid in addition to the vacuum fluctuations of the supersymmetric field an effective equation of state is derived in a self-consistent approach at one loop order. The net effect of the vacuum fluctuations of the supersymmetric fields in the leading adiabat…
In this work we show how the criterion of asymptotic Hamiltonian diagonalization originated in hybrid quantum cosmology serves to pick out a unique vacuum for the Dirac field in de Sitter, in the context of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. This criterion is based on the dynamical definition of annihilation and creationlike variables for the fermionic field, which obey the linearized dynamics of a Hamiltonian that has been diagonalized in a way that is adapted to its local spatial structure. This leads to fermionic variables that possess a precise asymptotic expansion in the ultraviol…
Production of gravitational vacuum defects and their contribution to the energy density of our Universe are discussed. These topological microstructures (defects) could be produced in the result of creation of the Universe from "nothing" when a gravitational vacuum condensate has appeared. They must be isotropically distributed over the isotropic expanding Universe. After Universe inflation these microdefects are smoothed, stretched and broken up. A part of them could survive and now they are perceived as the structures of Lambda-term and an unclustered dark matter. It is shown that the parame…
In the context of quantum field theories in curved spacetime, we compute the effective action of the transition amplitude from vacuum to vacuum in the presence of an external gravitational field. The imaginary part of resulted effective action determines the probability of vacuum decay via quantum tunneling process, giving the rate and spectrum of particle creations. We show that gravitational field polarizes vacuum and discretizes its spectrum for such a polarization gains gravitational energy. On the basis of gravitational vacuum polarization, we discuss the quantum origin of vacuum decay in…
By regarding the vacuum as a perfect fluid with equation of state p=-rho, de Sitter's cosmological model is quantized. Our treatment differs from previous ones in that it endows the vacuum with dynamical degrees of freedom. Instead of being postulated from the start, the cosmological constant arises from the degrees of freedom of the vacuum regarded as a dynamical entity, and a time variable can be naturally introduced. Taking the scale factor as the sole degree of freedom of the gravitational field, stationary and wave-packet solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation are found. It turns out th…
Short review of riddles that lie at the intersection of quantum theory, particle physics and cosmology; dark energy as false vacuum; discussion of a possible detection experiment.
The Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama ({\sf ECKS}) theory of gravity naturally extends Einstein\rq{}s general relativity ({\sf GR}) to include intrinsic angular momentum (spin) of matter. The main feature of this theory consists of an algebraic relation between spacetime torsion and spin of matter which indeed deprives the torsion of its dynamical content. The Lagrangian of {\sf ECKS} gravity is proportional to the Ricci curvature scalar constructed out of a general affine connection so that owing to the influence of matter energy-momentum and spin, curvature and torsion are produced and interact …
We address the question how to adapt cosmological constant $Λ$ for description of a vacuum dark energy density jumping from the big initial value to the small today value suggested by observations. We find such a possibility in the gauge-noninvariance of quantum cosmology which leads to a connection between a choice of the gauge and quantum spectrum for a certain physical quantity which can be specified in the framework of the minisuperspace model. We introduce a particular gauge in which the cosmological constant $Λ$ is quantized and show that making a measurement of $Λ$ today one can find it…
We investigate the occurrence of various exotic spacelike singularities in the past and the future evolution of $k = \pm 1$ Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model and loop quantum cosmology using a sufficiently general phenomenological model for the equation of state. We highlight the non-trivial role played by the intrinsic curvature for these singularities and the new physics which emerges at the Planck scale. We show that quantum gravity effects generically resolve all strong curvature singularities including big rip and big freeze singularities. The weak singularities, which include sudden and b…
We study the dynamical properties of a large body of varying vacuum cosmologies for which dark matter interacts with vacuum. In particular, performing the critical point analysis we investigate the existence and the stability of cosmological solutions which describe de-Sitter, radiation and matter dominated eras. We find several cases of varying vacuum models that admit stable critical points, hence they can be used in describing the cosmic history.
I propose modified set of creation and annihilation operators for the Schrödinger representation which is compatible with the Fock representation which differs from previous works. I take into account the relation between different non-unitary vacuums obtained from restricted frameworks like the relation between the Minkowski and Unruh vacuums.
The theory of symmetries of systems of coupled, ordinary differential equations (ODE) is used to develop a concise algorithm in order to obtain the entire space of solutions to vacuum Bianchi Einstein Field Equations (EFEs). The symmetries used are the well known automorphisms of the Lie algebra for the corresponding isometry group of each Bianchi Type, as well as the scaling and the time re-parametrization symmetry. The application of the method to Type VII_h results in (a) obtaining the general solution of Type VII_0 with the aid of the third Painlevé transcendental (b) obtaining the general…
Influence of gravity on the quantum vacuum of a massless minimally coupled scalar field under Robin boundary conditions on parallel plates is investigated. We introduce the detailed calculation of the volume energy for the case the gravitational background is weak in its most general form for a static spacetime. It founds that the quantum vacuum usually reacts to the gravitational field by decreasing the Casimir energy. In addition, we find sufficient conditions under which the Casimir force increases. Interestingly, the first order perturbation corrections, are present in the obtained formula…
We study oscillatory universes within the context of Loop Quantum Cosmology. We make a comparative study of flat and positively curved universes sourced by scalar fields with either positive or negative potentials. We investigate how oscillating universes can set the initial conditions for successful slow-roll inflation, while ensuring that the semi-classical bounds are satisfied. We observe rich oscillatory dynamics with negative potentials, although it is difficult to respect the semi-classical bounds in models of this type.
The current vacuum energy density observed as dark energy ${ ρ}_{ \rm dark }\simeq 2.5\times10^{-47}\ {\rm GeV^{4}}$ is unacceptably small compared with any other scales. Therefore, we encounter serious fine-tuning problem and theoretical difficulty to derive the dark energy. However, the theoretically attractive scenario has been proposed and discussed in literature: In terms of the renormalization-group (RG) running of the cosmological constant, the vacuum energy density can be expressed as ${ ρ}_{ \rm vacuum }\simeq m^{2}H^{2}$ where $m$ is the mass of the scalar field and rather dynamical …
The usual formulations of quantum field theory in Minkowski spacetime make crucial use of Poincare symmetry, positivity of total energy, and the existence of a unique, Poincare invariant vacuum state. These and other key features of quantum field theory do not generalize straightforwardly to curved spacetime. We discuss the conceptual obstacles to formulating quantum field theory in curved spacetime and how they can be overcome
In this paper, we investigate the evolution of primordial black hole (PBH) in vacuum-dominated era within Brans-Dicke cosmology. We consider the accretion of vacuum energy by PBHs and found that vacuum energy accretion efficiency should be less than 0.61. We also study the evaporation of PBHs where we conclude that larger the value of accretion efficiency longer live the PBHs. We also find that PBHs evaporate at a quicker rate in Brans-Dicke theory compared with Standard Cosmology.
We define a distinguished "ground state" or "vacuum" for a free scalar quantum field in a globally hyperbolic region of an arbitrarily curved spacetime. Our prescription is motivated by the recent construction of a quantum field theory on a background causal set using only knowledge of the retarded Green's function. We generalize that construction to continuum spacetimes and find that it yields a distinguished vacuum or ground state for a non-interacting, massive or massless scalar field. This state is defined for all compact regions and for many noncompact ones. In a static spacetime we find …
We review past and present results on the non-local form-factors of the effective action of semiclassical gravity in two and four dimensions computed by means of a covariant expansion of the heat kernel up to the second order in the curvatures. We discuss the importance of these form-factors in the construction of mass-dependent beta functions for the Newton's constant and the other gravitational couplings.
We study the compatibility of the quantum homogeneitiy and isotropy hypothesis (QHIH), proposed by Ashtekar and Gupt to restrict the choice of vacuum state for the cosmological perturbations in Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC), with the requirement that the selected vacuum should lead to a power spectrum that does not oscillate. We inspect in close detail the procedure that these authors followed to construct a set of states satisfying the QHIH, and how a preferred vacuum can be determined within this set. We find a step that is not univocally specified in this procedure, in relation with the repl…
The notion of vacuum fluctuations of the gravitational field plays important role in cosmology. The strong variable gravitational field of the very early Universe amplifies these fluctuations and transforms them into macroscopical cosmological perturbations. Since the underlying process is the parametric amplification, the perturbations are placed in squeezed vacuum quantum states. It is possible that we already see the manifestations of these processes in certain cosmological observations.
We generalize our previous thick shell formalism to incorporate any codimension-1 thick wall with a peculiar velocity and proper thickness bounded by arbitrary spacetimes. Within this new formulation we obtain the equation of motion of a spherically symmetric dust thick shell immersed in vacuum as well as in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes.
Comments on the paper "Late Time Behavior of false Vacuum Decay: Possible Implications for Cosmology and Metastable Inflating States" [arXiv:0711.1821] by L. M. Krauss and J. Dent are presented and the possible behavior of the unstable false vacuum at very late times, where deviations from the exponential decay law become to be dominant is analyzed.
It is well known that boundary conditions on quantum fields produce divergences in the renormalized energy-momentum tensor near the boundaries. Although irrelevant for the computation of Casimir forces between different bodies, the self-energy couples to gravity, and the divergences may, in principle, generate large gravitational effects. We present an analysis of the problem in the context of quantum field theory in curved spaces. Our model consists of a quantum scalar field coupled to a classical field that, in a certain limit, imposes Dirichlet boundary conditions on the quantum field. We s…
It has been recently shown that, contrary to an intuitive decoupling argument, the presence of new physics at very large energy scales (say around the Planck scale) can have a strong impact on the electroweak vacuum lifetime. In particular, the vacuum could be totally destabilized. This study was performed in a flat spacetime background, and it is important to extend the analysis to curved spacetime since these are Planckian-physics effects. It is generally expected that under these extreme conditions gravity should totally quench the formation of true vacuum bubbles, thus washing out the dest…
We present a modification of the recently proposed Sorkin-Johnston states for scalar free quantum fields on a class of globally hyperbolic spacetimes possessing compact Cauchy hypersurfaces. The modification relies on a smooth cutoff of the commutator function and leads always to Hadamard states, in contrast to the original Sorkin-Johnston states. The modified Sorkin-Johnston states are, however, due to the smoothing no longer uniquely associated to the spacetime.
In this thesis we present detailed analyses on various running vacuum models (RVM's), in which the vacuum energy density "runs" with the cosmic expansion. The RVM's are motivated from the renormalization group formalism of Quantum Field Theory in curved spacetime. In this theoretical framework, the vacuum energy density depends explicitly on the Hubble function and its time derivative and thus does not remain constant, in contradistinction to the standard $Λ$CDM picture. Upon studying how these models fit the data, we can determine whether this dynamical behavior is favored by observations or …
We present a simple, exact and self-consistent cosmology with a phenomenological model of quantum creation of radiation due to decay of the scalar field. The decay drives a non-isentropic inflationary epoch, which exits smoothly to the radiation era, without reheating. The initial vacuum for radiation is a regular Minkowski vacuum. The created radiation obeys standard thermodynamic laws, and the total entropy produced is consistent with the accepted value. We analyze the difference between the present model and a model with decaying cosmological constant previously considered.
First a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe filled with dust and a conformally invariant scalar field is quantized. For the closed model we find a discrete set of wormhole quantum states. In the case of flat spacelike sections we find states with classical behaviour at small values of the scale factor and quantum behaviour for large values of the scale factor. Next we study a FRW model with a conformally invariant scalar field and a nonvanishing cosmological constant dynamically introduced by regarding the vacuum as a perfect fluid. The ensuing Wheeler-DeWitt equation turns out to be a b…
