Dark energy is one of the greatest scientific mysteries of today. The idea that dark energy originates from quantum vacuum fluctuations has circulated since the late '60s, but theoretical estimations of vacuum energy have disagreed with the measured value by many orders of magnitude, until recently. Lifshitz theory applied to cosmology has produced the correct order of magnitude for dark energy. Furthermore, the theory is based on well-established and experimentally well-tested grounds in atomic, molecular and optical physics. In this paper, we confront Lifshitz cosmology with astronomical data. We find that the dark-energy dynamics predicted by the theory is able to resolve the Hubble tension, the discrepancy between the observed and predicted Hubble constant within the standard cosmological model. The theory is consistent with supernovae data, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and the Cosmic Microwave Background. Our findings indicate that Lifshitz cosmology is a serious candidate for explaining dark energy.
We discuss implications on the $H_0$ tension due to preferred-frame effects in the context of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. By using a combination of low-redshift data (Sne1a, elliptical and lenticular galaxies, GRB's, and quasars) we study the $H_0$ tension and its appearance as a preferred-frame effect, as well as present new constraints on the model parameter $λ$. Moreover, from the structure of the Friedmann equations, we argue that up to $38\%$ of the Hubble tension can be explained by Lorentz-violating effects in a Hořava-Lifshitz scenario.
A compelling unified model of dark energy and early dark energy (EDE) is presented, using a scalar field with an exponential runaway potential, in the context of alpha-attractors. The field is originally trapped at an enhanced symmetry point, subsequently thaws to become successful EDE and eventually slow-rolls to become dark energy. EDE ameliorates the observed Hubble tension.
The Hubble tension cast a blight on the standard cosmology. As a possible attitude to the problem, the local variation of the expansion rate in an inhomogeneous cosmology has been proposed where the spatial averaging over a finite domain was introduced in order to construct local Friedmann spacetime. However, it is not clear that the concept of the spatial averaging itself is gauge invariant or not. Namely the conclusion obtained by the averaging in a particular gauge is physically meaningful or not. In this paper we address this question, namely the gauge invariance of the spatial averaging i…
In this letter, we have considered generalized Ricci dark energy in the Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We have reconstructed the Hubble's parameter in terms of fractional densities. We have viewed the equation of state parameter in this situation. Also, we have examined the behavior of deceleration parameter and investigated the nature of the statefinder diagnostics. The equation of state parameter has exhibited quintessence-like behavior and from the plot of the deceleration parameter we have observed an ever accelerating universe.
It is shown, from the two independent approaches of McCrea-Milne and of Zeldovich, that one can fully recover the set equations corresponding to the relativistic equations of the expanding universe of Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker geometry. Although similar, the Newtonian and relativistic set of equations have a principal difference in the content and hence define two flows, local and global ones, thus naturally exposing the Hubble tension at the presence of the cosmological constant Λ. From this, we obtain absolute constraints on the lower and upper values for the local Hubble parameter…
Instead of Lorentz invariance, gravitational degrees of freedom may obey Lifshitz scaling at high energies, as it happens in Hořava's proposal for quantum gravity. We study consequences of this proposal for the spectra of primordial perturbations generated at inflation. Breaking of 4D diffeomorphism (Diff) invariance down to the foliation-preserving Diff in Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity leads to appearance of a scalar degree of freedom in the gravity sector, khronon, which describes dynamics of the time foliation. One can naively expect that mixing between inflaton and khronon will jeopardize c…
In this paper we give a physical explanation to the accelerated expansion of the Universe, alleviating the tension between the discrepancy of Hubble constant measurements. By the Euler Cauchy stress principle, we identify a controversy on the lack of consideration of the surface forces contemplated in the study of the expansion of the Universe. We distinguish a new effect that modifies the spacetime fabric by means of the energy conservation equation. The resulting dynamical equations from the proposed hypothesis are contrasted to several testable astrophysical predictions. This paper also exp…
We show that the cosmic bulk viscosity estimated in our previous works is sufficient to bridge the $H_0$ value inferred from observations of the early universe with the value inferred from the local (late) universe.
We show how a modified Friedmann equation, originating from a model of the universe built from a certain $W_3$ algebra, has the potential to explain the difference between the Hubble constants extracted from CMB data and from supernova data.
In recent years the discrepancy in the value of the Hubble parameter has been growing. Recently, there are works supporting the proposal that the uncertainty principles can solve the Hubble tension. Motivated by this proposal, we work with an isotropic and homogeneous FRW universe, obtain its Hamiltonian equations, and thus, the Hubble parameter through the first Friedmann equation. In the context of GUP and EUP models, the Hubble parameter is modified. Since the fingerprints of quantum gravity are imprinted on the CMB, we consider the GUP/EUP-modified Hubble parameter in the first Friedmann e…
Allowing for a nonvanishing spin tensor for cold dark matter ($ω_{\mathrm{DM}}=0$) has the consequence of giving rise to an effective $\mathrm{FLRW}$ dynamics with a small negative barotropic constant for an effective dark matter density ($-1/3<ω_{\mathrm{eff}}\leq0$). This turns out to solve the Hubble parameter tension in a straightforward way.
Values of the Hubble constant between the direct measurements from various independent local observations and that inferred from the cosmic microwave background with the $Λ$-cold-dark-matter model are in tension with persistent significance. We propose a late-time inhomogeneous resolution suggesting that a chameleon field coupled to a local overdensity of matter could be trapped at a higher potential energy density as an effective cosmological constant driving the local expansion rate faster than that of the background with lower matter density. We illustrate this mechanism in a toy model in w…
We explore the possibility of using a gigaparsec-scale local void to reconcile the Hubble tension. Such a gigaparsec-scale void can be produced by multi-stream inflation where different parts of the observable universe follow different inflationary trajectories. The impact of such a void for cosmological observations is studied, especially those involving supernovae, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. As a benchmark model, a 1.7Gpc scale with boundary width 0.7Gpc and density contrast -0.14 may ease the Hubble tension.
Many late time approaches for the solution of the Hubble tension use late time smooth deformations of the Hubble expansion rate $H(z)$ of the Planck18/$Λ$CDM best fit to match the locally measured value of $H_0$ while effectively keeping the comoving distance to the last scattering surface and $Ω_{0m} h^2$ fixed to maintain consistency with Planck CMB measurements. A well known problem of these approaches is that they worsen the fit to low $z$ distance probes. Here we show that another problem of these approaches is that they worsen the level of the $Ω_{0m}-σ_8$ growth tension. We use the gene…
We investigate a new possible solution to the Hubble constant tension. we propose a simple resolution to the problem assuming that a first-order phase transition related to H0 transition occurred in the early Universe. The early evolution of the Universe is a result of hybrid inflation that has lasted for a specific period until symmetry breaking takes place. Fitting our model to measurements from Planck and SH0ES data provides a key explanation of discrepancies of H0 measurements. The quantum fluctuations calculated in this model have significant results on the reheating parameters Nre and Tr…
We show that the energy density of the superhorizon modes released in a non-Bunch-Davies vacuum can be arbitrarily large during inflation and it decreases like ln(a)/a^4 in the subsequent radiation dominated era. This may constitute a dark radiation component which can sufficiently alter the early cosmological evolution to alleviate the Hubble tension.
The Hubble tension is shown to be solvable, without any free parameter, conceptually and quantitatively, within the approach of modified weak-field General Relativity involving the cosmological constant $Λ$. That approach enables one to describe in a unified picture both the dynamics of dark matter containing galaxies and the accelerated expansion of the Universe, thus defining a {\it local} Hubble constant of a local flow and the {\it global} one. The data on the dark matter content of peculiar galaxy samples are shown to be compatible to that unified picture. Future more refined surveys of g…
The Universe may feature large-scale inhomogeneities beyond the standard paradigm, implying that statistical homogeneity and isotropy may be reached only on much larger scales than the usually assumed $\sim$100 Mpc. This means that we are not necessarily typical observers and that the Copernican principle could be recovered only on super-Hubble scales. Here, we do not assume the validity of the Copernican principle and let Cosmic Microwave Background, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, type Ia supernovae, local $H_0$, cosmic chronometers, Compton y-distortion and kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich observati…
We show that the gravitational waves measurements have raised the opportunity to measure $H_0$ with dark sirens to within 2$σ$, the accuracy required to resolve the \hubble tension. There are two principal reasons for our results: (1) upgrades to GW LIGO-Virgo transient catalogues GWTC-1 and GWTC-2 enhance their sensitive with only 10\% of contamination fraction, and (2) new dark sirens should help to constrain our dynamical EoS. In conjunction, sensitivity upgrades and a new dark energy model will facilitate an accurate inference of the \hubble constant $H_0$ to better with an $\pm 0.077$ err…
In the recently suggested non-standard, quasi-molecular mechanism of recombination, the presence of neighboring proton increases the ionization energy and decreases the final recombination rate of hydrogen. Both these two effects can lead to the larger value of the present expansion rate of the universe obtained using CMB data and standard cosmological model, and thus are able to reduce or resolve the Hubble tension problem. We note also that due to the quasi-molecular channel the recombination began earlier, what potentially can solve the sigma-eight tension, since the CMB-predicted value of …
Horava-Lifshitz gravity, a recent proposal for a UV-complete renormalizable gravity theory, may lead to a bouncing cosmology. In this note we argue that Horava-Lifshitz cosmology may yield a concrete realization of the matter bounce scenario, and thus give rise to an alternative to inflation for producing a scale-invariant spectrum of cosmological perturbations. In this scenario, quantum vacuum fluctuations exit the Hubble radius in the pre-bounce phase and the spectrum is transformed into a scale-invariant one on super-Hubble scales before the bounce because the long wavelength modes undergo …
For a standard $Λ$CDM universe with a power-law primordial power spectrum, the discrepancy between early- and late-universe measurements of the Hubble constant continued to grow and recently reached $5.3σ$. During inflation, local features in the inflationary potential often lead to band-limited features in the primordial power spectrum, hence breaking the power-law assumption in the derivation of the Hubble tension. We investigate whether such inflationary "glitches" can ease the Hubble tension. The recently released \emph{Planck} temperature and polarization data and the 2019 SH0ES+H0LiCOW j…
The tensions between the values of Hubble constant obtained from the early and the late Universe data pose a significant challenge to modern cosmology. Possible modifications of the flat homogeneous isotropic cosmological ΛCDM model are considered, in which the Universe contains dark energy, cold baryonic matter and dark matter. They are based on general relativity and satisfy two requirements: (1) the value of the Hubble constant, calculated from the value of the Hubble parameter at the recombination by the formulas of flat ΛCDM model, should be equal to 92% of the one based on low-reshift ob…
The inconsistent Hubble constant values derived from cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations and from local distance-ladder measurements may suggest new physics beyond the standard $Λ$CDM paradigm. It has been found in earlier works that, at least phenomenologically, non-standard recombination histories can reduce the $\gtrsim 4σ$ Hubble tension to $\sim 2σ$. Following this path, we vary physical and phenomenological parameters in RECFAST, the standard code to compute ionization history of the universe, to explore possible physics beyond standard recombination. We find that the CMB cons…
We discuss the ability of a dark fluid becoming relevant around the time of matter radiation equality to significantly relieve the tension between local measurements of the Hubble constant and CMB inference, within the $Λ$CDM model. We show that the gravitational impact of acoustic oscillations in the dark fluid balance the effects on the CMB and result in an improved fit to CMB measurements themselves while simultaneously raising the Hubble constant. The required balance favors a model where the fluid is a scalar field that converts its potential to kinetic energy around matter radiation equa…
We consider a scenario of modified gravity, which is generic to late-time acceleration, namely, acceleration in the Jordan frame and no acceleration in the Einstein frame. The possibility is realized by assuming an interaction between dark matter and the baryonic component in the Einstein frame which is removed by going to the Jordan frame using a disformal transformation giving rise to an exotic effective fluid responsible for causing phantom crossing at late times. In this scenario, past evolution is not distinguished from $Λ$CDM but late time dynamics is generically different due to the pre…
The current cosmic time evolution of the Universe is described by the General Relativity theory when a cosmological principle is considered under a flat space time landscape. The set of known as Friedmann equations, contain the principles that lead to the construction of the standard $Λ$CDM model. However, the current state-of-art regarding these equations, even if it is a fundamental method, is based in solving analytically the differential equations by considering several forms of matter/energy components or evaluating them in specific cosmic times where two or more components contribute at …

The planned sensitivity upgrades to the LIGO and Virgo facilities could uniquely identify host galaxies of dark sirens-compact binary coalescences without any electromagnetic counterparts-within a redshift of z = 0.1. This is aided by the higher order spherical harmonic modes present in the gravitational-wave signal, which also improve distance estimation. In conjunction, sensitivity upgrades and higher modes will facilitate an accurate, independent measurement of the host galaxy's redshift in addition to the luminosity distance from the gravitational wave observation to infer the Hubble-Lemaî…
