We explore the possibility of a non-singular bounce in our universe from a warped braneworld scenario with dynamical branes and a non-zero brane cosmological constant. Such models naturally incorporate a scalar sector known as the radion originating from the modulus of the theory. The presence of brane cosmological constant renders the branes to be non-flat and gives rise to a potential and a non-canonical kinetic term for the radion field in the four dimensional effective action. The kinetic term exhibits a phantom-like behavior within the domain of evolution of the modulus which leads to a violation of the null-energy condition often observed in a bouncing universe. The interplay of the radion potential and kinetic term enables the evolution of the radion field from a normal to a phantom regime where the universe transits from a contracting era to an expanding epoch through a non-singular bounce. Analysis of the scalar and tensor perturbations over such background evolution reveal that the primordial observables e.g., the amplitude of scalar perturbations $\mathcal{A}_s$, tensor to scalar ratio $r$ and the scalar spectral index $n_s$ are in agreement with the current constraints reported by the Planck satellite. The implications are discussed.
We consider a 3-brane embedded in a warped 5-dimensional background with a dilaton and a Kalb-Ramond 2-form. We show that it is possible to find static solutions of the form of charged dS/AdS-like black hole with horizon which could have a negative mass parameter. The motion of the 3-brane in this bulk generates an effective 4-dimensional bouncing cosmology induced by the negative dark radiation term. This model avoids the instability that arises for bouncing brane in a Reissner-Nordstrøm-AdS bulk.
We show the existence of some bouncing cosmological solutions in the braneworld scenario. More specifically, we consider a dynamical three-brane in the background of Born-Infeld and electrically charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole. We find that, in certain range of parameter space, the brane universe, at least classically, never shrinks to a zero size, resulting in a singularity-free cosmology within the classical domain.
We study cosmological braneworld models with a single timelike extra dimension. Such models admit the intriguing possibility that a contracting braneworld experiences a natural bounce without ever reaching a singular state. This feature persists in the case of anisotropic braneworlds under some additional and not very restrictive assumptions. Generalizing our study to braneworld models containing an induced brane curvature term, we find that a FRW-type singularity is once again absent if the bulk extra dimension is timelike. In this case, the universe either has a non-singular origin or commen…
We examine the full nonlinear dynamics of closed FRW universes in the framework of D-branes formalism. Friedmann equations contain additional terms arising from the bulk-brane interaction that provide a concrete model for nonsingular bounces in the early phase of the universe. We construct nonsingular cosmological scenarios sourced with perfect fluids and a massive inflaton field which are past eternal, oscillory and may emerge into an inflationary phase due to nonlinear resonance mechanisms. Oscillatory behaviour becomes metastable when the system is driven into a resonance window of the para…
We propose a new scenario for the bouncing universe in a simple five-dimensional braneworld model in the framework of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, which works even with ordinary matter on the brane. In this scenario, the so-called branch singularity located at a finite physical radius in the bulk spacetime plays an essential role. We show that a three-brane moving in the bulk may reach and pass through it in spite of the fact that it is a curvature singularity. The bulk spacetime is extended beyond the branch singularity in the C^0 sense and then the branch singularity is identified as a mas…
We construct a holographic dark energy model with a non-minimally coupled scalar field on the brane where Gauss-Bonnet and Induced Gravity effects are taken into account. This model provides a wide parameter space with several interesting cosmological implications. Especially, the equation of state parameter of the model crosses the phantom divide line and it is possible to realize bouncing solutions in this setup.
Background boucing cosmologies in the framework of General Relativity, driven by a single scalar field filling the Universe, and with a quasi-matter domination period, i.e., depicting the so-called Matter Bounce Scenario, are reconstructed for geometries with positive spatial curvature. These cosmologies lead to a nearly flat power spectrum of the curvature fluctuations in co-moving coordinates for modes that leave the Hubble radius during the quasi-matter domination period, and whose spectral index and its running, which are related with the effective Equation of State parameter given by the …
Braneworld effective action is constructed by two different methods based respectively on the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems. The equivalence of these methods is shown due to nontrivial duality relations between special boundary operators of these two problems. Previously known braneworld action algorithms in two-brane Randall-Sundrum model are generalized to curved branes with deSitter and Anti-deSitter geometries.
We examine the dynamics of a Bianchi IX model on a 4-dim brane embedded in a 5-dim conformally flat empty bulk with a timelike extra dimension. Einstein's equations on the brane reduces to a 6-dim Hamiltonian dynamical system with additional terms that implement nonsingular bounces in the model. The phase space of the model has two critical points (a saddle-center-center and a center-center-center) in a finite region of phase space, and two asymptotic de Sitter critical points, one acting as an attractor to late-time dynamics. The saddle-center-center engenders in the phase space the topology …
We examine the dynamics of the gravitational collapse in a 4-dim Lorentzian brane embedded in a 5-dim bulk with an extra timelike dimension. By considering the collapse of pure dust on the brane we derive a bouncing FLRW interior solution and match it with a corrected Schwarzschild exterior geometry. In the physical domain considered for the parameters of the solution, the analytical extension is built, exhibiting an exterior event horizon and a Cauchy horizon, analogous to the Reissner-Nordström solution. For such an exterior geometry we examine the effects of the bulk-brane corrections in th…
With a method in which the Friedmann equation is written in a form such that evolution of the scale factor can be treated as that of a particle in a "potential", we classify all possible cosmic evolutions in the DGP braneworld scenario with the dark radiation term retained. By assuming that the energy component is pressureless matter, radiation or vacuum energy, respectively, we find that in the matter or vacuum energy dominated case, the scale factor has a minimum value $a_0$. In the matter dominated case, the big bang singularity can be avoided in some special circumstances, and there may ex…
Starting with the Nambu-Goto action of the braneworld embedded in a curved bulk, we derive the precise expressions for the quantum induced effects due to small fluctuations of the brane. To define the brane fluctuations invariantly, we introduce the Riemannian coordinate system for the subspace normal to the braneworld. It will turn out that we can systematically incorporate the effects of bulk curvature, and that the induced effects depend on the extrinsic curvature and the normal-connection gauge field as well as on bulk curvature components at the brane.
We consider certain aspects of cosmological dynamics of a spatially curved Universe in $f(T)$ gravity. Local analysis allows us to find conditions for bounces and for static solutions; these conditions appear to be in general less restrictive than in general relativity. We also provide a global analysis of the corresponding cosmological dynamics in the cases when bounces and static configurations exist, by constructing phase diagrams. These diagrams indicate that the fate of a big contracting Universe is not altered significantly when bounces become possible, since they appear to be inaccessib…
The investigation of quantum gravity effects in order to avoid the big bang singularity is a requisite, so that the idea of oscillating universes is introduced as an alternative for standard cosmological model. Therefore, the Friedmann equations arising from the quantum corrections of entropy-area relation provide the possibility of studying the oscillating universes. Addition to necessity of surveying the bouncing solutions, however, the values of unknown constant parameters are still a matter of open debate. In this paper, we consider modified Friedmann equations with logarithmic entropy cor…
We discuss the effects of a (possibly) negative $(1+z)^6$ type contribution to the Friedmann equation. No definite answer can be given as to the presence and magnitude of a particular mechanism, because any test using the general relation $H(z)$ is able to estimate only the total of all sources of such a term. That is why we describe four possibilities: 1) geometric effects of loop quantum cosmology, 2) braneworld cosmology, 3) metric-affine gravity, and 4) cosmology with spinning fluid. We find the exact solutions for the models with $ρ^2$ correction in terms of elementary functions, and show…
Positively-curved, oscillatory universes have recently been shown to have important consequences for the pre-inflationary dynamics of the early universe. In particular, they may allow a self-interacting scalar field to climb up its potential during a very large number of these cycles. The cycles are naturally broken when the potential reaches a critical value and the universe begins to inflate, thereby providing a `graceful entrance' to early universe inflation. We study the dynamics of this behaviour within the context of braneworld scenarios which exhibit a bounce from a collapsing phase to …
Nonsingular cosmologies are investigated in the framework of f(R) gravity within the first order formalism. General conditions for bounces in isotropic and homogeneous cosmology are presented. It is shown that only a quadratic curvature correction is needed to predict a bounce in a flat or to describe cyclic evolution in a curved dust-filled universe. Formalism for perturbations in these models is set up. In the simplest cases, the perturbations diverge at the turnover. Conditions to obtain smooth evolution are derived.
On the way towards quantum gravity and the unification of interaction, several ideas have been rejected and avenues avoided because they were perceived as physically unviable. But in the literature there are works in which it was found the contrary, namely that those rejected topics make sense after all. Such topics, reviewed in this article, are negative energies occurring in higher derivative theories and ultrahyperbolic spaces, ordering ambiguity of operators in curved spaces, the vast landscape of possible compactifications of extra dimensions in string theory, and quantization of a 3-bran…
We study spacetime singularities in a general five-dimensional braneworld with curved branes satisfying four-dimensional maximal symmetry. The bulk is supported by an analog of perfect fluid with the time replaced by the extra coordinate. We show that contrary to the existence of finite distance singularities from the brane location in any solution with flat (Minkowski) branes, in the case of curved branes there are singularity-free solutions for a range of equations of state compatible with the null energy condition.
We compute the level of non-gaussianities produced by a cosmological bouncing phase in the minimal non-singular setup that lies within the context of General Relativity when the matter content consists of a simple scalar field with a standard kinetic term. Such a bouncing phase is obtained by requiring that the spatial sections of the background spacetime be positively curved. We restrict attention to the close vicinity of the bounce by Taylor expanding the scale factor, the scalar field and its potential in powers of the conformal time around the bounce. We find that possibly large non-gaussi…
Using a covariant embedding formalism, we find the effective field equations for the Electromagnetism that emerge on branes in the context of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld scenario. Our treatment is essentially geometrical. We start with Maxwell equations in five-dimensions and project them into an arbitrary brane. The formalism is quite general and allows us to consider curved bulk spaces and curved branes whose tension is not necessarily null. The kinetic electromagnetic term induced on the world volume of the brane, proper of DGP models, is incorporated in this formulation by mea…
In this paper, we adopt the method of quantum fields in curved spacetime to quantize a free scalar matter field in the braneworld background whose warped factor is of the form that could generate Pöschl-Teller potential. Then we consider the interaction between the scalar field $ϕ(x)$ and a classical scalar source $ρ(x)$ with the form $\mathcal{H}_I=\sqrt{-g}\tilde{g}ρ(x)ϕ(x)$. The corresponding S-matrix is given and the number of particles generated by the source is obtained. Furthermore, we get the {particle numbers} in the cases that only ground state mode of the field could be detected and…
The `braneworld' (described by the usual worldvolume action) is a D dimensional timelike surface embedded in a N dimensional ($N>D$) warped, nonfactorisable spacetime. We first address the conditions on the warp factor required to have an extremal flat brane in a five dimensional background. Subsequently, we deal with normal deformations of such extremal branes. The ensuing Jacobi equations are analysed to obtain the stability condition. It turns out that to have a stable brane, the warp factor should have a minimum at the location of the brane in the given background spacetime. To illustrate …
We review studies on the singularity structure and asymptotic analysis of a 3-brane (flat or curved) embedded in a five-dimensional bulk filled with a `perfect fluid' with an equation of state with the `pressure' and the `density' of the fluid depending on the fifth space coordinate. Regular solutions satisfying positive energy conditions in the bulk exist only in the cases of a flat brane with an EoS parameter equal to -1, or of AdS branes for EoS parameter values in suitable intervals. More cases can be found by gluing two regular branches of solutions at the position of the brane. However, …
We investigate the influence of a brane on the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the current density for a charged fermionic field in background of locally AdS spacetime with an arbitrary number of toroidally compact dimensions and in the presence of a constant gauge field. Along compact dimensions the field operator obeys quasiperiodicity conditions with arbitrary phases and on the brane it is constrained by the bag boundary condition. The VEVs for the charge density and the components of the current density along uncompact dimensions vanish. The components along compact dimensions are decomp…
This work deals with the presence of twinlike models in scalar field theories. We show how to build distinct scalar field theories having the same extended solution, with the same energy density and the very same linear stability. Here, however, we start from a given but generalized scalar field theory, and we construct the corresponding twin model, which also engenders generalized dynamics. We investigate how the twinlike models arise in flat and in curved spacetime. In the curved spacetime, we consider a braneword model with the warp factor controlling the spacetime geometry with a single ex…
This work deals with braneworld models in a five dimensional curved geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent. The investigation introduces a new family of models, generated from a source scalar field that supports kinklike structures described through the presence of a real parameter, capable of controlling the thickness of the warp factor that describes the five dimensional geometry. The mechanism shows how to get a brane that engenders a compact profile.
The vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the fermionic current density is investigated in the geometry of two parallel branes in locally AdS spacetime with a part of spatial dimensions compactified to a torus. Along the toral dimensions quasiperiodicity conditions are imposed with general phases and the presence of a constant gauge field is assumed. Different types of boundary conditions are discussed on the branes, including the bag boundary condition and the conditions arising in $Z_{2}$-symmetric braneworld models. Nonzero vacuum currents appear along the compact dimensions only. In the region…
Within the framework of loop quantum cosmology, there exists a semi-classical regime where spacetime may be approximated in terms of a continuous manifold, but where the standard Friedmann equations of classical Einstein gravity receive non-perturbative quantum corrections. An approximate, analytical approach to studying cosmic dynamics in this regime is developed for both spatially flat and positively-curved isotropic universes sourced by a self-interacting scalar field. In the former case, a direct correspondence between the classical and semi-classical field equations can be established tog…
Maximally symmetric curved-brane solutions are studied in dilatonic braneworld models which realise the self-tuning of the effective four-dimensional cosmological constant. It is found that no vacua in which the brane has de Sitter or anti-de Sitter geometry exist, unless one modifies the near-boundary asymptotics of the bulk fields. In the holographic dual picture, this corresponds to coupling the UV CFT to a curved metric (possibly with a defect). Alternatively, the same may be achieved in a flat-space QFT with suitable variable scalar sources. With these ingredients, it is found that maxima…
It is shown that any spatially flat and isotropic universe undergoing accelerated expansion driven by a self-interacting scalar field can be directly related to a contracting, decelerating cosmology. The duality is made manifest by expressing the scale factor and Hubble parameter as functions of the scalar field and simultaneously interchanging these two quantities. The decelerating universe can be twinned with a cosmology sourced by a phantom scalar field by inverting the scale factor and leaving the Hubble parameter invariant. The accelerating model can be related to the same phantom univers…
We present a new class of non-singular string cosmologies in d space-time dimensions. At very early times, τ<< τ_c, the Universe is described by a flat σ-model metric, a constant maximal temperature T_c and super-weak string interactions, g_str << 1. During the evolution, the metric remains flat up to τ_c, while the string coupling grows and reaches a critical value g*_str at τ_c. This phase is characterized by a uniform temporal distribution of spacelike branes. At later times, τ> τ_c, the Universe enters in a new phase of expansion, with radiation. The string coupling decreases due to the di…
We review the paradigm of quintom cosmology. This scenario is motivated by the observational indications that the equation of state of dark energy across the cosmological constant boundary is mildly favored, although the data are still far from being conclusive. As a theoretical setup we introduce a no-go theorem existing in quintom cosmology, and based on it we discuss the conditions for the equation of state of dark energy realizing the quintom scenario. The simplest quintom model can be achieved by introducing two scalar fields with one being quintessence and the other phantom. Based on the…
In string theory, the traditional picture of a Universe that emerges from the inflation of a very small and highly curved space-time patch is a possibility, not a necessity: quite different initial conditions are possible, and not necessarily unlikely. In particular, the duality symmetries of string theory suggest scenarios in which the Universe starts inflating from an initial state characterized by very small curvature and interactions. Such a state, being gravitationally unstable, will evolve towards higher curvature and coupling, until string-size effects and loop corrections make the Univ…
