On the way towards quantum gravity and the unification of interaction, several ideas have been rejected and avenues avoided because they were perceived as physically unviable. But in the literature there are works in which it was found the contrary, namely that those rejected topics make sense after all. Such topics, reviewed in this article, are negative energies occurring in higher derivative theories and ultrahyperbolic spaces, ordering ambiguity of operators in curved spaces, the vast landscape of possible compactifications of extra dimensions in string theory, and quantization of a 3-brane in braneworld scenarios.
Braneworld effective action is constructed by two different methods based respectively on the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems. The equivalence of these methods is shown due to nontrivial duality relations between special boundary operators of these two problems. Previously known braneworld action algorithms in two-brane Randall-Sundrum model are generalized to curved branes with deSitter and Anti-deSitter geometries.
We derive the low energy effective action for the dilatonic braneworld. In the case of the single-brane model, we find the effective theory is described by the Einstein-scalar theory coupled to the dark radiation. Remarkably, the dark radiation is not conserved in general due to a coupling to the bulk scalar field. The effective action incorporating Kaluza-Klein (KK) corrections is obtained and the role of the AdS/CFT correspondence in the dilatonic braneworld is revealed. In particular, it is shown that CFT matter would not be confined to the braneworld in the presence of the bulk scalar fiel…
In this review, we summarize current understandings of black hole solutions in various braneworld models, including the Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali model, the Randall-Sundrum (RS) models, the Karch-Randall (KR) model and the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model. After illustrating basic properties of each braneworld model, we introduce the bulk/brane correspondence in the RS and KR braneworld models, adding supporting evidence for it. We then summarize the studies on braneworld black hole solutions, which consist of constructing exact or approximate solutions and investigating the phase diagram of …
We investigate the presence of braneworld solutions in a bimetric theory, with gravity and the scalar field coupling differently. We consider a non-standard model, with a Cuscuton-like scalar field, and we show how to generate braneworld solutions in this new scenario. In particular, we found no gravitational instabilities for the braneworld solutions.
We investigate localization problem for gauge fields within the 5D standing wave braneworld with real scalar field and show that there exist normalizable vector field zero modes on the brane.
We investigate the braneworld gravity starting from the non-conservative gravitational field equations in a five-dimensional bulk. The approach is based on the Gauss-Codazzi formalism along with the study of the braneworld consistency conditions. The effective gravitational equations on the brane are obtained and the constraint leading to a brane energy-momentum conservation is analyzed.
Recently, we proposed a new braneworld model [GIT] in which the collision of a brane universe and a vacuum bubble coming from the extra-dimension is utilized as a trigger of brane big-bang. In this article, mainly reviewing this model, we briefly summarize cosmological braneworld scenarios in which collision of branes plays an important role.
We propose a new class of p-brane models describing intrinsically lightlike branes in any world-volume dimensions. Properties of the dynamics of these lightlike p-branes in various gravitational backgrounds of interest in the context of braneworlds are briefly described. Codimenion two (and more) lightlike braneworlds perform in their ground states non-trivial motions in the extra dimensions in sharp contrast to standard (Nambu-Goto) braneworlds.
In this paper, we investigate the braneworld scenario in $f(T)$ gravity with a $K$-field as the background field. We consider various different specific forms of $f(T)$ gravity and $K$-field, and find a general way to construct the braneworld model. Based on our solutions, the split of branes is investigated. Besides, the stability of the braneworld is studied by investigating the tensor perturbation of the vielbein.
In this paper we address the issue of finding braneworld solutions in a five-dimensional Horndeski gravity and the mechanism of gravity localization into the brane via ``almost massless modes'' for suitable values of the Horndeski parameters. We compute the corrections to the Newtonian potential and discuss the limit where four-dimensional gravity is recovered.
We study braneworlds in six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The Gauss-Bonnet term is crucial for the equations to be well-posed in six dimensions when non-trivial matter on the brane is included (the also involved induced gravity term is not significant for their structure), and the matching conditions of the braneworld are known. We show that the energy-momentum of the brane is always conserved, independently of any regular bulk energy-momentum tensor, contrary to the situation of the five-dimensional case.
We derive the Lichnerowicz equation in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term. Using the modified Lichnerowicz equation we study the metric perturbations of Gauss-Bonnet black strings in Codimension-2 Braneworlds.
We constructed a six-dimensional version of the standing wave model with an anisotropic 4-brane generated by a phantom-like scalar field. The model represents a braneworld where the compact (on-brane) dimension is assumed to be sufficiently small in order to describe our universe (hybrid compactification). The proposed geometry of the brane and its transverse manifold is non-static, unlike the majority of braneworld models presented in the literature. Furthermore, we have shown that the zero-mode scalar field is localized around the brane. While in the string-like defect the scalar field is lo…
In this paper we consider a static domain wall inside a 3-brane. Differently of the standard achievement obtained in General Relativity, the analysis performed here gives a consistency condition for the existence of static domain walls in a braneworld gravitational scenario. It is also shown the behavior of the domain wall gravitational field in the newtonian limit.
This paper aims to evince the corrections on the black string warped horizon in the braneworld paradigm, and their drastic physical consequences, as well as to provide subsequent applications in astrophysics. Our analysis concerning black holes on the brane departs from the Schwarzschild case, where the black string is unstable to large-scale perturbation. The cognizable measurability of the black string horizon corrections due to braneworld effects is investigated, as well as their applications in the variation of quasars luminosity. We delve into the case wherein two solutions of Einstein's …
We investigate the localization problem of matter fields within the 5D standing wave braneworld. In this model the brane emits anisotropic waves into the bulk with different amplitudes along different spatial dimensions. We show that in the case of increasing warp factor there exist the pure gravitational localization of all kinds of quantum and classical particles on the brane. For classical particles the anisotropy of the background metric is hidden, brane fields exhibit standard Lorentz symmetry in spite of anisotropic nature of the primordial 5D metric.
In a braneworld context, the radion is a massless mode coupling to the trace of the matter stress tensor. Since the radion also governs the separation between branes, it is expected to decouple from the physical spectrum in single brane scenarios, such as the one-brane Randall-Sundrum model. However, contrary to expectations, we demonstrate that the Karch-Randall radion always remains as a physical excitation, even in the single brane case. Here, the radion measures the distance not between branes, but rather between the brane and the anti-de Sitter boundary on the other side of the bulk.
By using the quantum tunneling approach over semiclassical approximations, we study the quantum corrections to the Hawking temperature, entropy and Bekenstein-Hawking entropy-area relation for a black hole lying on a brane.
We study a codimension 2 braneworld in the Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We carefully examine the structure of possible singularities in the system which characterize the braneworld through matching conditions. Consequently, we find that the thickness of the brane can be incorporated as the distributional source, which we dub quasi-thickness. On the basis of our formalism, we analyze the linearized gravity and show the conventional Einstein gravity can be recovered on the brane. In the nonlinear regime, however, we find corrections due to the thickness and the bulk geometry. We also point out…
Within the 5D standing wave braneworld model numerical solutions of the equations for matter fields with various spins are found. It is shown that corresponding action integrals are factorizable and convergent over the extra coordinate, i.e. 4D fields are localized on the brane. We find that only left massless fermions are localized on the brane, while the right fermions are localized in the bulk. We demonstrate also quantization of Kaluza-Klein excited modes in our model.
The viability of achieving gravitational consistent braneworld models in the framework of a f(R) theory of gravity is investigated. After a careful generalization of the usual junction conditions encompassing the embedding of the 3-brane into a f(R) bulk, we provide a prescription giving the necessary constraints in order to implement the projected second order effective field equations on the brane.
In this work we deal with the spacetime shaped by a straight cosmic string, emerging from local gauge theories, in the braneworld gravity context. We search for physical consequences of string features due to the modified gravitational scenario encoded in the projected gravitational equations. It is shown that cosmic strings in braneworld gravity may present significant differences when compared to the general relativity predictions since its linear density is modified and the deficit angle produced by the cosmic string is attenuated. Furthermore, the existence of cosmic strings in that scenar…
After incorporating the f(R) gravity into the general braneworld sum rules scope, it is shown that some particular class of warped five dimensional nonlinear braneworld models, which may be interesting for the hierarchy problem solution, still require a negative tension brane. For other classes of warp factors (suitable and not suitable for approaching the hierarchy problem) it is not necessary any negative brane tension in the compactification scheme. In this vein, it is argued that in the bulk f(R) gravity context, some types of warp factors may be useful for approaching the hierarchy proble…
Recently, it was argued that the spacetime dynamics can be understood by calculating the difference between the degrees of freedom on the boundary and in the bulk in a region of space. In this Letter, we apply this new idea to braneworld scenarios and extract the corresponding Friedmann equations of $(n-1)$-dimensional brane embedded in the $(n+1)$-dimensional bulk with any spacial curvature. We will also extend our study to the more general Gauss-Bonnet braneworld with curvature correction terms on the brane and in the bulk, and derive the dynamical equation in a nonflat Universe.
The new class of the non-stationary solutions to the system of N-dimensional equations for coupled gravitational and massless scalar field is found. The model represents a single (N-1)-brane in a space-time with one large (infinite) and (N-5) small (compact) space-like extra dimensions. In some particular cases the model corresponds to the gravitational and scalar field standing waves bounded by the brane. These braneworlds can be relevant in string and other higher dimensional models.
In this work, we propose a new class of smooth thick string-like braneworld in six dimensions. The brane exhibits a varying brane-tension and an $AdS$ asymptotic behavior. The brane-core geometry is parametrized by the Bulk cosmological constant, the brane width and by a geometrical deformation parameter. The source satisfies the dominant energy condition for the undeformed solution and has an exotic asymptotic regime for the deformed solution. This scenario provides a normalized massless Kaluza-Klein mode for the scalar, gravitational and gauge sectors. The near-brane geometry allows massive …
The class of non-stationary braneworld models generated by the coupled gravitational and scalar fields is reviewed. The model represents a brane in a space-time with single time and one large (infinite) and several small (compact) space-like extra dimensions. In some particular cases the model has the solutions corresponding to the bulk gravi-scalar standing waves bounded by the brane. Pure gravitational localization mechanism of matter particles on the node of standing waves, where the brane is placed, is discussed. Cosmological applications of the model also considered.
There are various different descriptions of Randall-Sundrum (RS) braneworlds. Here we present a unified view of the braneworld based on the gradient expansion approach. In the case of the single-brane model, we reveal the relation between the geometrical and the AdS/CFT approach. It turns out that the high energy and the Weyl term corrections found in the geometrical approach merge into the CFT matter correction found in the AdS/CFT approach. We also clarify the role of the radion in the two-brane system. It is shown that the radion transforms the Einstein theory with Weyl correction into the …
We review some general aspects of braneworld cosmologies in which an inflationary period driven by a scalar field confined on the brane is described by a nonstandard effective Friedmann equation. The perturbation spectra, consistency equations and observational consequences of these models are considered.
In this thesis we investigate black holes in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld scenario. We begin with an overview of extra-dimensional physics, from the original proposal of Kaluza and Klein up to the modern braneworld picture of extra dimensions. A detailed description of braneworld gravity is given, with particular emphasis on its compatibility with experimental tests of gravity. We then move on to a discussion of static, spherically symmetric braneworld black hole solutions. Assuming an equation of state for the ``Weyl term'', which encodes the effects of the extra dimension, we are able to c…
Stellar structure in braneworlds is markedly different from that in ordinary general relativity. As an indispensable first step towards a more general analysis, we completely solve the ``on brane'' 4-dimensional Gauss and Codazzi equations for an arbitrary static spherically symmetric star in a Randall--Sundrum type II braneworld. We then indicate how this on-brane boundary data should be propagated into the bulk in order to determine the full 5-dimensional spacetime geometry. Finally, we demonstrate how this procedure can be generalized to solid objects such as planets.
We study the matching conditions of intersecting brane worlds in Lovelock gravity in arbitrary dimension. We show that intersecting various codimension 1 and/or codimension 2 branes one can find solutions that represent energy-momentum densities localized in the intersection, providing thus the first examples of infinitesimally thin higher codimension braneworlds that are free of singularities and where the backreaction of the brane in the background is fully taken into account.
The quantum creation probability and entropy of a 2-codimensional braneworld are calculated in the framework of no-boundary universe. The entropy can take an arbitrarily large value as the brane tensions increase, in violation of the conjectured "N-bound" in quantum gravity, even for a 4-dimensional ordinary universe.
Quantum fluctuations of gravitational field with respect to the ADD braneworld background turns out to be large enough spoiling the TeV scale physics as well. In view of this observation it becomes important to look for some protecting mechanism. The most natural such mechanism in the case of braneworld model with compactified extra dimensions can be the shape moduli of extra space. Quantum fluctuations of braneworld background affect significantly the production as well as evaporation of mini black holes studied very actively during the las few years. The enormous amplification of quantum flu…
The semi-classical nature of braneworld cosmological models does not account for any quantum gravitational effects. In this letter we use the gauge/gravity correspondence to argue that quantum string corrections cannot be ignored in any study of braneworld stability. As an example, we find, by analysing the quantum gravitational backreaction, that a closed universe is unstable to radiation into the bulk.
We introduce new 6D standing wave braneworld model generated by gravity coupled to a phantom-like scalar field and investigate the problem of pure gravitational localization of matter fields. We show that in the case of increasing warp factor spin 0, 1, 1/2 and 2 fields are localized on the brane.
We study the collapse of a homogeneous braneworld dust cloud in the context of the various curvature correction scenarios, namely, the induced-gravity, the Gauss-Bonnet, and the combined induced-gravity and Gauss-Bonnet. In accordance to the Randall-Sundrum model, and contrary to four-dimensional general relativity, we show in all cases that the exterior spacetime on the brane is non-static.
We review extra-dimensional and 4D cosmological scenarios through the effective Friedmann evolution on a brane. Some features involving noncommutative geometry and scalar/tachyon slow-roll inflation are considered.
Recently, S. Antonini and B. Swingle builded a holographic model for braneworld cosmology by introducing an ``end-of-the-world" (ETW) brane moving in a charged black hole spactime. In this paper, we will show that a holographic description of braneworld cosmology is possible for a general black hole spacetime with a pure tension brane if one implements a mixed boundary condition on the ETW brane. As a simple example, we study AdS-Schwarzschild black holes and show that a sensible Euclidean braneworld solution is compatible with localization of gravity on the ETW brane.
We generalise the RS braneworld model by taking into account a general stringy bulk containing the scalar dilaton field and the two-form Kalb-Ramond field, apart from gravity. Assuming small fluctuations around a RS background, the back-reacted warp factor is obtained. It is shown that the fine tuning problem in connection with the Higgs mass reappears in a new guise and the effective modular potential fails to stabilise the braneworld.
We study braneworld models in the presence of scalar field in a five-dimensional geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, with gravity modified to include a function of the Ricci scalar. We develop a procedure that allows to obtain analytical solution for the braneworld configuration in a diversity of models, in the much harder case where the Ricci scalar is non constant quantity.
We construct analogue black hole solutions in the braneworld scenario. The quantum fluctuations of condensate gravitons propagating around a $4+n$-dimensional gravitational potential are found yielding a metric similar to higher dimensional Schwarzschild black hole line-element. Black hole analogue solutions in Randall-Sundrum and Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane world models are also constructed. The properties of such black hole analogues are discussed.
We look for spherically symmetric star or black hole solutions on a Randall-Sundrum brane from the perspective of the bulk. We take a known bulk solution, and analyse possible braneworld trajectories within it that correspond, from the braneworld point of view, to solutions of the brane Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations. Our solutions are therefore embedded consistently into a full bulk solution. We find the full set of static gravitating matter sources on a brane in a range of bulk spacetimes, analyzing which can correspond to physically sensible sources. Finally, we look at time-dependent…
We consider five-dimensional gravity with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk and an induced gravity term on a 2-brane of codimension-2. We show that this system admits BTZ black holes on the 2-brane which are extended into the bulk with regular horizons.
We show the existence of some bouncing cosmological solutions in the braneworld scenario. More specifically, we consider a dynamical three-brane in the background of Born-Infeld and electrically charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole. We find that, in certain range of parameter space, the brane universe, at least classically, never shrinks to a zero size, resulting in a singularity-free cosmology within the classical domain.
We explore the problem of braneworld black holes in the heterotic braneworld scenario of Lukas, Ovrut, Stelle and Waldram (LOSW). We show that black string solutions are unstable, and demonstrate some unusual asymptotics in the linearized metric. We also solve the fully coupled brane and bulk Einstein equations, finding an exact, though singular, solution which corresponds to a brane black hole in which the branes spike apart at the Schwarzschild radius.
We study braneworlds in a five dimensional bulk, where cosmological expansion is mimicked by motion through AdS$_5$. We show that the five dimensional graviton reduces to the four dimensional one in the late time approximation of such braneworlds. Inserting a fixed regulator brane far from the physical brane, we investigate quantum graviton production due to the motion of the brane. We show that the massive Kaluza-Klein modes decouple completely from the massless mode and they are not generated at all in the limit where the regulator brane position goes to infinity. In the low energy limit, th…
We investigate the Kaluza-Klein braneworld cosmology from the point of view of observers on the brane. We first generalize the Shiromizu-Maeda-Sasaki (SMS) equations to higher dimensions. As an application, we study a (4+n)-dimensional brane with n dimensions compactified on the brane, in a (5+n)-dimensional bulk. By assuming that the size of the internal space is static, that the bulk energy-momentum tensor can be neglected, we determine the effect of the bulk geometry on the Kaluza-Klein braneworld. Then we derive the effective Friedmann equation on the brane. It turns out that the Friedmann…
We study gravitational waves in the black string Randall-Sundrum braneworld. We present a reasonably self-contained and complete derivation of the equations governing the evolution of gravitational perturbations in the presence of a brane localized source, and then specialize to the case of spherical radiation from a pointlike body in orbit around the black string. We solve for the resulting gravitational waveform numerically for a number of different orbital parameters.
In this article we study an intermediate inflationary universe models using the Gauss-Bonnet brane. General conditions required for these models to be realizable are derived and discussed. We use recent astronomical observations to constraint the parameters appearing in the model.
Braneworld models typically predict gravity to grow stronger at short distances. In this paper, we consider braneworlds with two types of additional curvature couplings, a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk, and an Einstein-Hilbert (EH) term on the brane. In the regime where these terms are dominant over the bulk EH term, linearized gravity becomes weaker at short distances on the brane. In both models, the weakening of gravity is tied to the presence of ghosts in the graviton mass spectrum. We find that the ordinary coupling of matter to gravity is recovered at low energies/long wavelengths on the…
The low energy regime of 5D braneworld models with a bulk scalar field is studied. The setup is rather general and includes the Randall-Sundrum and dilatonic braneworlds models as particular cases. We discuss the cosmological evolution of the system and conclude that, in a two brane system, the negative tension brane is generally expected to evolve towards a null warp-factor state. This implies, for late time cosmology, that both branes end up interacting weakly. We also analyze the observational constraints imposed by solar-system and binary-pulsar tests on the braneworld configuration. This …
In braneworld collisions fermions originally localised on one brane can be transferred to another brane, or to a space-time boundary. By modelling branes as scalar field kinks we bounce them off boundaries and study resulting effects according to a braneworld observer. Extending on our previous work, we numerically compute the spectrum of excitations of fermion modes localised on the brane and boundary, in terms of the momentum $k$ along the brane dimensions. We find that the spectrum depends strongly on collision velocity and fermion-scalar coupling. Also, high-momentum modes tend to ``fall o…
A static self-tuning SO(3)xZ_2 symmetric and translation invariant braneworld setup with flat brane is considered. We discuss the null energy conditions (NEC) for matter on the brane and in the bulk and prove that for the static regular background with broken Lorentz invariance the NEC and positiveness of the total energy density on the brane and NEC in the bulk cannot be satisfied simultaneously. Then we give some examples and elaborate some special cases. For instance, we provide a macroscopic solution for a background with Lifshitz scaling.
A spinning nonextremal D3-brane undergoes a phase transition to a naked singularity which, from the braneworld point of view, corresponds to the apparent graviton speed passing from subluminal to superluminal. We investigate this phase transition from the dual perspectives of braneworld scenarios and holography. We discuss the relevance of the thermodynamic stability domains of a spinning D3-brane to the physics of braneworld scenarios. We also describe various gravitational Lorentz violations which arise from static D3-branes.
We discuss D-braneworld cosmology, that is, the brane is described by the Born-Infeld action. Compared with the usual Randall-Sundrum braneworld cosmology where the brane action is the Nambu-Goto one, we can see some drastic changes at the very early universe: (i)universe may experience the rapid accelerating phase (ii)the closed universe may avoid the initial singularity. We also briefly address the dynamics of the cosmology in the open string metric, which might be favorer than the induced metric from the view point of the D-brane.
Braneworld effective action for two-brane model is constructed by two different methods based respectively on the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems. The equivalence of these methods is shown due to nontrivial duality relations between special boundary operators of these two problems.
We study the four-dimensional gravitational fluctuation on anisotropic brane tension embedded in braneworlds with vanishing bulk cosmological constant. In this setup, warp factors have two types (A and B) and we point out that the two types correspond to positive and negative tension brane, respectively. We show that volcano potential in the model of type A has singularity and the usual Newton's law is reproduced by the existence of normalizable zero mode. While, in the case of type B, the effective Planck scale is infinite so that there is no normalizable zero mode.
It is shown that the consideration of the braneworld consistency conditions within the framework of bulk modified gravities allows for the existence of thick branes in the five- dimensional case with compact extra dimension. In studing the specific consistency conditions in the Brans-Dicke gravity we were able to show that the brane generating scalar field potential is relevant for relaxing the gravitational constraints.
We consider a magnetic Bianchi I braneworld, embedded in between two Schwarzschild-AdS spacetimes, boosted equal amounts in opposite directions and compare them to the analagous solution in four-dimensional General Relativity. The efficient dissipation of anisotropy on the brane is explicitly demonstrated, a process we dub braneworld isotropization. From the bulk point of view, we attribute this to anisotropic energy being carried into the bulk by hot gravitons leaving the brane. From the brane point of view this can be interpreted in terms of the production of particles in the dual CFT. We ex…
