After incorporating the f(R) gravity into the general braneworld sum rules scope, it is shown that some particular class of warped five dimensional nonlinear braneworld models, which may be interesting for the hierarchy problem solution, still require a negative tension brane. For other classes of warp factors (suitable and not suitable for approaching the hierarchy problem) it is not necessary any negative brane tension in the compactification scheme. In this vein, it is argued that in the bulk f(R) gravity context, some types of warp factors may be useful for approaching the hierarchy problem and for evading the necessity of a negative brane tension in the compactification scheme.
We consider a supersymmetric hybrid inflation in the framework of the Randall-Sundrum type II Braneworld model. We drive an analytical expression for the scalar potential and find that the F-term dominates hybrid inflation process. We show that for some value of Brane tension we can eliminate the fine tuning problem related to coupling constant k of the potential: We also calculate all known spectrum inflation parameters and show that observational bounds from WMAP5, BAO and SN observations are satisfied.
We introduce two new families of solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations with negative cosmological constant in 5 dimensions. These solutions are static black holes whose horizons are modelled on the 3-geometries nilgeometry and solvegeometry. Thus the horizons (and the exterior spacetimes) can be foliated by compact 3-manifolds that are neither spherical, toroidal, hyperbolic, nor product manifolds, and therefore are of a topological type not previously encountered in black hole solutions. As an application, we use the solvegeometry solutions to construct Bianchi VI$_{-1}$ braneworld cosmo…
We study the problem of a four-dimensional brane lying in the five-dimensional degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Nariai) black hole, in five-dimensional $F(R)$-gravity. We show that there cannot exist the brane in the Nariai bulk space except the case that the brane tension vanishes. We demonstrate that the five-dimensional Nariai bulk is unstable in a large region of the parameter space. In particular, the Nariai bulk can have classical (anti-)evaporation instabilities. The bulk instability back-reacts on the four-dimensional brane, in case that the brane tension vanishes, and the unstable …
We investigate the braneworld gravity starting from the non-conservative gravitational field equations in a five-dimensional bulk. The approach is based on the Gauss-Codazzi formalism along with the study of the braneworld consistency conditions. The effective gravitational equations on the brane are obtained and the constraint leading to a brane energy-momentum conservation is analyzed.
In this paper we address the issue of finding braneworld solutions in a five-dimensional Horndeski gravity and the mechanism of gravity localization into the brane via ``almost massless modes'' for suitable values of the Horndeski parameters. We compute the corrections to the Newtonian potential and discuss the limit where four-dimensional gravity is recovered.
For a cosmological Randall-Sundrum braneworld with anisotropy, i.e., of Bianchi type, the modified Einstein equations on the brane include components of the five-dimensional Weyl tensor for which there are no evolution equations on the brane. If the bulk field equations are not solved, this Weyl term remains unknown, and many previous studies have simply prescribed it ad hoc. We construct a family of Bianchi braneworlds with anisotropy by solving the five-dimensional field equations in the bulk. We analyze the cosmological dynamics on the brane, including the Weyl term, and shed light on the r…
The self-accelerating branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) five-dimensional braneworld has provided a compelling model for the current cosmic acceleration. Recent observations, however, have not favored it so much. We discuss the solutions which contain a de Sitter 3-brane in the cascading DGP braneworld model, which is a kind of higher-dimensional generalizations of the DGP model, where a $p$-dimensional brane is placed on a $(p+1)$-dimensional one and the $p$-brane action contains the $(p+1)$-dimensional induced scalar curvature term. In the simplest six-dimensional model, we derive th…
We study teleparallel gravity in five-dimensional spacetime with particular discussions on Kaluza-Klein (KK) and braneworld theories. We directly perform the dimensional reduction by differential forms. In the braneworld theory, the teleparallel gravity formalism in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmology is equivalent to GR due to the same Friedmann equation, whereas in the KK case the reduction of our formulation does not recover the effect as GR of 4-dimensional spacetime.
We study braneworlds in six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The Gauss-Bonnet term is crucial for the equations to be well-posed in six dimensions when non-trivial matter on the brane is included (the also involved induced gravity term is not significant for their structure), and the matching conditions of the braneworld are known. We show that the energy-momentum of the brane is always conserved, independently of any regular bulk energy-momentum tensor, contrary to the situation of the five-dimensional case.
We consider five-dimensional gravity with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk and an induced gravity term on a 2-brane of codimension-2. We show that this system admits BTZ-like black holes on the 2-brane which are extended into the bulk with regular horizons.
We study braneworlds in a five dimensional bulk, where cosmological expansion is mimicked by motion through AdS$_5$. We show that the five dimensional graviton reduces to the four dimensional one in the late time approximation of such braneworlds. Inserting a fixed regulator brane far from the physical brane, we investigate quantum graviton production due to the motion of the brane. We show that the massive Kaluza-Klein modes decouple completely from the massless mode and they are not generated at all in the limit where the regulator brane position goes to infinity. In the low energy limit, th…
We study localization properties of fundamental fields which are coupled to one another through the gauge mechanism both in the original Randall-Sundrum (RS) and in the modified Randall-Sundrum (MRS) braneworld models: scalar-vector, vector-vector, and spinor-vector configuration systems. For this purpose we derive conditions of localization, namely the finiteness of integrals over the extra coordinate in the action of the system considered. We also derive field equations for each of the systems and then obtain their solutions corresponding to the extra dimension by a separation of variable me…
In this paper, we investigate a $6$-dimensional smooth thick braneworld model which contains a compact extra dimension and an infinite large one. The braneworld is generated by a real scalar field with a $ϕ^6$ potential and the bulk is asymptotically $\text{AdS}_6$ spacetime. The geometry achieves the localization of the free $U(1)$ gauge field, which is a problem in the $5$-dimensional Randall-Sundrum-like models. In addition, we analyze the stability of the braneworld system and the localization of gravitons.
We obtain new results for consistent braneworld Kaluza-Klein reductions, showing how we can derive four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity ``localised on the AdS_4 brane'' as an exact embedding in five-dimensional N=4 gauged supergravity. Similarly, we obtain five-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity localised on an AdS_5 brane as a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction from six-dimensional N=4 gauged supergravity. These embeddings can be lifted to type IIB and massive type IIA supergravity respectively. The new AdS braneworld Kaluza-Klein reductions are generalisations of earlier results on brane…
We construct the setup of a five-dimensional braneworld scenario in teleparallel gravity. Both cases of Minkowski and Friedmann-Robertson-Walker branes embedded in Anti de Sitter bulk are studied and the effective 4-D action were studied. 4-dimensional local Lorentz invariance is found to be recovered in both cases. However, due to different junction conditions, the equations governing the 4-D cosmological evolution differ from general relativistic case. Using the results of Ref. [13], we consider a simple inflationary scenario in this setup. The inflation parameters are found to be modified c…
In this review, we give a brief introduction on the aspects of some extra dimension models and the five-dimensional thick brane models in extended theories of gravity. First, we briefly introduce the Kaluza-Klein theory, the domain wall model, the large extra dimension model, and the warped extra dimension models. Then some thick brane solutions in extended theories of gravity are reviewed. Finally, localization of bulk matter fields on thick branes is discussed.
The new class of the non-stationary solutions to the system of N-dimensional equations for coupled gravitational and massless scalar field is found. The model represents a single (N-1)-brane in a space-time with one large (infinite) and (N-5) small (compact) space-like extra dimensions. In some particular cases the model corresponds to the gravitational and scalar field standing waves bounded by the brane. These braneworlds can be relevant in string and other higher dimensional models.
We point out that the effective theory for the Randall-Sundrum braneworld models with bulk fields contains the baryon number violation process depending on the spacetime dynamics. Combining to the curvature-current interaction, the net baryon number observed today may be explained. The resultant baryon to entropy ratio is determined by the ratio of the Planck scales in four dimensional and five dimensional spacetime except for the parameter for CP violation.
We study braneworld models in the presence of scalar field in a five-dimensional geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, with gravity modified to include a function of the Ricci scalar. We develop a procedure that allows to obtain analytical solution for the braneworld configuration in a diversity of models, in the much harder case where the Ricci scalar is non constant quantity.
We construct a regular five-dimensional brane-world with localised gravity on a flat 3-brane. The matter content in the bulk is parametrised by an analog of a non-linear fluid with equation of state $p=γρ^λ$ between the `pressure' $p$ and the `density' $ρ$ dependent on the 5th dimension. For $γ$ negative and $λ>1$, the null energy condition is satisfied, and the geometry is free of singularities within finite distance from the brane, while the induced four-dimensional Planck mass is finite.
We study primordial gravitational waves from inflation in Randall-Sundrum braneworld model. The effect of small change of the Hubble parameter during inflation is investigated using a toy model given by connecting two de Sitter branes. We analyze the power spectrum of final zero-mode gravitons, which is generated from the vacuum fluctuations of both initial Kaluza-Klein modes and zero-mode. The amplitude of fluctuations is confirmed to agree with the four-dimensional one at low energies, whereas it is enhanced due to the normalization factor of zero-mode at high energies. We show that the five…
We investigate a cosmological solution within the framework of a 5D standing wave braneworld model generated by gravity coupled to a massless scalar phantom-like field. By obtaining a full exact solution of the model we found a novel dynamical mechanism in which the anisotropic nature of the primordial metric gives rise to i) inflation along certain spatial dimensions, and ii) deflation and a shrinking reduction of the number of spatial dimensions along other directions. This dynamical mechanism can be relevant for dimensional reduction in string and other higher dimensional theories in the at…
We consider five-dimensional gravity with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk and an induced gravity term on a 2-brane of codimension-2. We show that this system admits BTZ black holes on the 2-brane which are extended into the bulk with regular horizons.
The existence of envelopes is studied for systems of differential equations in connection with the method of asymptotic splittings which allows to determine the singularity structure of the solutions. The result is applied to braneworlds consisting of a 3-brane in a five-dimensional bulk, in the presence of an analog of a bulk perfect fluid parametrizing a generic class of bulk matter. We find that all flat brane solutions suffer from a finite distance singularity contrary to previous claims. We then study the possibility of avoiding finite distance singularities by cutting the bulk and gluing…
In this work, we investigate numerical evolution of massive Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of a scalar field in a thick brane. We derive the Klein-Gordon equation in five dimensional spacetime, and obtain the evolution equation and the Schrödinger-like equation. With the resonances of the scalar KK modes as the initial data, the scalar field is evolved with the maximally dissipative boundary condition. The results show that there are scalar KK resonant particles with long life on the brane, which indicates that these resonances might be viewed as one of the candidates for dark matter.
It is shown that the consideration of the braneworld consistency conditions within the framework of bulk modified gravities allows for the existence of thick branes in the five- dimensional case with compact extra dimension. In studing the specific consistency conditions in the Brans-Dicke gravity we were able to show that the brane generating scalar field potential is relevant for relaxing the gravitational constraints.
In this letter we calculate the emission of gravity waves by the binary pulsar in the framework of five dimensional braneworlds. We consider only spacetimes with one compact extra-dimension. We show that the presence of additional degrees of freedom, especially the 'gravi-scalar' leads to a modification of Einstein's quadrupole formula. We compute the induced change for the binary pulsar PSR 1913+16 where it amounts to about 20% which is by far excluded by present experimental data.
We analyze the inflationary scenario based on the tachyon field coupled with the radion of the second Randall-Sundrum model (RSII). The tachyon Lagrangian is derived from the dynamics of a 3-brane moving in the five dimensional bulk. The AdS$_5$ geometry of the bulk is extended to include the radion. Using the Hamiltonian formalism we find four nonlinear field equations supplemented by the modified Friedmann equations of the RSII braneworld cosmology. After a suitable rescaling we reduce the parameters of our model to only one free parameter related to the brane tension and the AdS$_5$ curvatu…
We apply the Gauss-Codacci formalism to brane worlds scenario within the framework of Brans-Dicke gravity. The compactification is taken from six to five dimensions in order to formalize brane-world models with hybrid compactification in scalar-tensor theories.
Recently, it was argued that the spacetime dynamics can be understood by calculating the difference between the degrees of freedom on the boundary and in the bulk in a region of space. In this Letter, we apply this new idea to braneworld scenarios and extract the corresponding Friedmann equations of $(n-1)$-dimensional brane embedded in the $(n+1)$-dimensional bulk with any spacial curvature. We will also extend our study to the more general Gauss-Bonnet braneworld with curvature correction terms on the brane and in the bulk, and derive the dynamical equation in a nonflat Universe.
In this work we deal with the presence of braneworld solutions in a five-dimensional space-time with a single extra spatial dimension of infinite extent. The braneworld scenario is built under the presence of a single real scalar field, and we modify the gravity sector to include generic function of the Gauss-Bonnet term. We study several specific models, and we construct exact braneworld solutions, in particular for including the Gauss-Bonnet term at first and second order power. As an interesting result, we show that the brane tends to split for a specific modification in the gravity sector,…
We consider four-dimensional de Sitter, flat and anti de Sitter branes embedded in a six-dimensional bulk spacetime whose dynamics is dictated by Lovelock theory. We find, applying a generalised version of Birkhoff's theorem, that all possible maximally symmetric braneworld solutions are embedded in Wick-rotated black hole spacetimes of Lovelock theory. These are warped solitonic spaces, where the horizons of the black hole geometries correspond to the possible positions of codimension-2 branes. The horizon temperature is related via conical singularities to the tension or vacuum energy of the…
The braneworld model, in which our Universe is a three-brane embedded in a five-dimensional bulk, allows the existence of wormholes, without any violation of the energy conditions. A fundamental ingredient of traversable wormholes is the violation of the null energy condition (NEC). However, in the brane world models, the stress energy tensor confined on the brane, threading the wormhole, satisfies the NEC. In conventional general relativity, wormholes existing before inflation can be significantly enlarged by the expanding spacetime. We investigate the evolution of an inflating wormhole in th…
We derive the generalized Friedmann equation governing the cosmological evolution inside the thick brane model in the presence of two curvature correction terms: a four-dimensional scalar curvature from induced gravity on the brane, and a five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet curvature term. We find two effective four-dimensional reductions of the Friedmann equation in some limits and demonstrate that they can be rewritten as the first law of thermodynamics on the apparent horizon of thick braneworld.
We study the holographic representation of the entanglement entropy, recently proposed by Ryu and Takayanagi, in a braneworld context. The holographic entanglement entropy of a de Sitter brane embedded in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime is evaluated using geometric quantities, and it is compared with two kinds of de Sitter entropy: a quarter of the area of the cosmological horizon on the brane and entropy calculated from the Euclidean path integral. We show that the three entropies coincide with each other in a certain limit. Remarkably, the entropy obtained from the Euclidean path integral …
We examine the stability of extremal braneworld Reissner-Nordström black holes under massive charged scalar perturbations. We show that similar to the four-dimensional case, the superradiant amplification can occur in braneworld charged holes. More interestingly we find that when the spacetime dimension is higher than four, a trapping potential well can emerge outside the braneworld black hole. This potential well is the extra dimensional effect and does not exist in four dimensions. It triggers the superradiant instability of the extremal braneworld charged holes.
A manifestly gauge-invariant theory of gravitational fluctuations of brane-world scenarios is discussed. Without resorting to any specific gauge choice, a general method is presented in order to disentangle the fluctuations of the brane energy-momentum from the fluctuations of the metric. As an application of the formalism, the localization of metric fluctuations on scalar branes breaking spontaneously five-dimensional Poincaré invariance is addressed. Only assuming that the four-dimensional Planck mass is finite and that the geometry is regular, it is demonstrated that the vector and scalar f…
We consider a 3-brane embedded in a warped 5-dimensional background with a dilaton and a Kalb-Ramond 2-form. We show that it is possible to find static solutions of the form of charged dS/AdS-like black hole with horizon which could have a negative mass parameter. The motion of the 3-brane in this bulk generates an effective 4-dimensional bouncing cosmology induced by the negative dark radiation term. This model avoids the instability that arises for bouncing brane in a Reissner-Nordstrøm-AdS bulk.
In the Randall-Sundrum scenario, our universe is a 4-dimensional `brane' living in a 5-dimensional bulk spacetime. By studying the scattering of bulk gravity waves, we show that this brane rings with a characteristic set of complex quasinormal frequencies, much like a black hole. To a bulk observer these modes are interpreted as metastable gravity wave bound states, while a brane observer views them as a discrete spectrum of decaying massive gravitons. Potential implications of these scattering resonances are discussed.
We construct analogue black hole solutions in the braneworld scenario. The quantum fluctuations of condensate gravitons propagating around a $4+n$-dimensional gravitational potential are found yielding a metric similar to higher dimensional Schwarzschild black hole line-element. Black hole analogue solutions in Randall-Sundrum and Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane world models are also constructed. The properties of such black hole analogues are discussed.
The brane cosmology scenario is based on the idea that our Universe is a 3-brane embedded in a five-dimensional bulk. In this work, a general class of braneworld wormholes is explored with $R\neq 0$, where $R$ is the four dimensional Ricci scalar, and specific solutions are further analyzed. A fundamental ingredient of traversable wormholes is the violation of the null energy condition (NEC). However, it is the effective total stress energy tensor that violates the latter, and in this work, the stress energy tensor confined on the brane, threading the wormhole, is imposed to satisfy the NEC. I…
We study the tidal deformations of various known black hole and wormhole solutions in a simple context of warped compactification -- Randall-Sundrum theory in which the four-dimensional spacetime geometry is that of a brane embedded in five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime. The linearized gravitational perturbation theory generically reduces to either an inhomogeneous second-order ODE or a homogeneous third-order ODE of which indicial roots associated with an expansion about asymptotic infinity can be related to Tidal Love Numbers. We describe various tidal-deformed metrics, classify their…
We consider the static domain wall braneworld scenario constructed from the Palatini formalism $f(\mathcal{R})$ theory. We check the self-consistency under scalar perturbations. By using the scalar-tensor formalism we avoid dealing with the higher-order equations. We develop the techniques to deal with the coupled system. We show that under some conditions, the scalar perturbation simply oscillates with time, which guarantees the stability. We also discuss the localization condition of the scalar mode by analyzing the effective potential and the fifth dimensional profile of the scalar mode. We…
No realistic black holes localized on a 3-brane in the Randall-Sundrum infinite braneworld have been found so far. The problem of finding a static black hole solution is reduced to a boundary value problem. We solve it by means of a numerical method, and show numerical examples of a localized black hole whose horizon radius is small compared to the bulk curvature scale. The sequence of small localized black holes exhibits a smooth transition from a five-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, which is a solution in the limit of small horizon radius. The localized black hole tends to flatten as i…
We compute the cosmological perturbations generated in the colliding bubble braneworld universe in which bubbles filled with five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space (AdS5)expanding within a five dimensional de Sitter space (dS5) or Minkowski space (M5) collide to form a (3+1) dimensional local brane on which the cosmology is virtually identical to that of the Randall-Sundrum model. The perturbation calculation presented here is valid to linear order but treats the fluctuations of the expanding bubbles as (3+1) dimensional fields localized on the bubble wall. We find that for bubbles expanding in…
We solve for the cosmological perturbations in a five-dimensional background consisting of two separating or colliding boundary branes, as an expansion in the collision speed V divided by the speed of light c. Our solution permits a detailed check of the validity of four-dimensional effective theory in the vicinity of the event corresponding to the big crunch/big bang singularity. We show that the four-dimensional description fails at the first nontrivial order in (V/c)^2. At this order, there is nontrivial mixing of the two relevant four-dimensional perturbation modes (the growing and decayin…
The localization of gravity for (5 + 1)-dimensional intersecting thick braneworld models is thoroughly investigated. Departing from preliminary results for five independent proposals, from I to V, gravity is shown to be localized in the brane. In particular, for models from I to III, only the zero modes are analytically determined. On the other hand, for models IV and V, massive modes are all obtained: a finite number of massive states is identified for model IV, while an infinite but discrete number of massive states bounded from below is exhibited by model V. Considering that the discretenes…
A six dimensional standing-wave braneworld model has been constructed. It consists in an anisotropic 4-brane generated by standing gravitational waves whose source is normal matter. In this model the compact (on-brane) dimension is assumed to be sufficiently small in order to describe our universe (hybrid compactification). The bulk geometry is non-static, unlike most of the braneworld models in the literature. The principal feature of this model is the fact that the source is not a phantom like scalar field, as the original standing-wave model that was proposed in five dimensions and its six …
Stellar structure in braneworlds is markedly different from that in ordinary general relativity. As an indispensable first step towards a more general analysis, we completely solve the ``on brane'' 4-dimensional Gauss and Codazzi equations for an arbitrary static spherically symmetric star in a Randall--Sundrum type II braneworld. We then indicate how this on-brane boundary data should be propagated into the bulk in order to determine the full 5-dimensional spacetime geometry. Finally, we demonstrate how this procedure can be generalized to solid objects such as planets.
We consider five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Kalb-Ramond system self-consistently coupled to a lightlike 3-brane, where the latter acts as material, charge and variable cosmological constant source. We find wormhole-like solutions whose total space-time manifold consists of either (a) two "universes", which are identical copies of the exterior space-time region (beyond the horizon) of 5-dimensional Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black hole, or (b) a "right" "universe" comprising the exterior space-time region of Reissner-Nordstroem-anti-de Sitter black hole and a "left" "universe" being the Rin…
Electromagnetic and (linearized) gravitational interactions of the Kalb-Ramond (KR) field, derived from an underlying ten dimensional heterotic string in the zero slope limit, are studied in a five dimensional background Randall-Sundrum I spacetime with standard model fields confined to the visible brane having negative tension. The warp factor responsible for generating the gauge hierarchy in the Higgs sector is seen to appear inverted in the KR field couplings, when reduced to four dimensions. This leads to dramatically enhanced rotation, {\it far beyond observational bounds}, of the polariz…
We constructed a six-dimensional version of the standing wave model with an anisotropic 4-brane generated by a phantom-like scalar field. The model represents a braneworld where the compact (on-brane) dimension is assumed to be sufficiently small in order to describe our universe (hybrid compactification). The proposed geometry of the brane and its transverse manifold is non-static, unlike the majority of braneworld models presented in the literature. Furthermore, we have shown that the zero-mode scalar field is localized around the brane. While in the string-like defect the scalar field is lo…
We found cosmological solution of the 6D standing wave braneworld model generated by gravity coupled to a massless scalar phantom-like field. By obtaining a full exact solution of the model we found a novel dynamical mechanism in which the anisotropic nature of the primordial metric gives rise to expansion of three spatial brane dimensions and affectively reduction of other spatial directions. This dynamical mechanism can be relevant for dimensional reduction in string and other higher dimensional theories in the attempt of getting a 4D isotropic expanding space-time.
It is considered the 6D brane model where matter is trapped on the surface of a (2+4)-hyperboloid, as is suggested by the geometrical structure behind the 4D conformal group. The effective dimension of the bulk space-time for matter fields is five, with the extra space-like and time-like domains. Using the embedding theory the presence of the familiar factorizable 5D brane metrics in the both domains is shown. These metrics with exponential warp factors are able to provide with the additional reduction of the effective space-time dimensions down to four. It is demonstrated that the extra (1+1)…
