We summarise recent perspectives on symmetries of noncommutative field theories based on homotopy algebras. We show how these viewpoints naturally lead to a new class of noncommutative field theories which possess braided gauge symmetries, and explain in detail their uses in gravity. We review how these considerations lead to a new theory of noncommutative gravity in four dimensions within the Einstein-Cartan-Palatini formalism.
We consider noncommutative geometries obtained from a triangular Drinfeld twist and review the formulation of noncommutative gravity. A detailed study of the abelian twist geometry is presented, including the fundamental theorem of noncommutative Riemannian geometry. Inspired by [1, 2], we obtain solutions of noncommutative Einstein equations by considering twists that are compatible with the curved spacetime metric.
We define a new homotopy algebraic structure, that we call a braided $L_\infty$-algebra, and use it to systematically construct a new class of noncommutative field theories, that we call braided field theories. Braided field theories have gauge symmetries which realize a braided Lie algebra, whose Noether identities are inhomogeneous extensions of the classical identities, and which do not act on the solutions of the field equations. We use Drinfel'd twist deformation quantization techniques to generate new noncommutative deformations of classical field theories with braided gauge symmetries, …
Noncommutative gravity in three dimensions with no cosmological constant is reviewed. We find a solution which describes the presence of a torsional source.
We construct a family of four-dimensional noncommutative deformations of $U(1)$ gauge theory following a general scheme, recently proposed in JHEP 08 (2020) 041 for a class of coordinate-dependent noncommutative algebras. This class includes the $\mathfrak{su}(2)$, the $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ and the angular (or $λ$-Minkowski) noncommutative structures. We find that the presence of a fourth, commutative coordinate $x^0$ leads to substantial novelties in the expression for the deformed field strength with respect to the corresponding three-dimensional case. The constructed field theoretical models…
The classical Einstein's gravity can be reformulated from the constrained U(2,2) gauge theory on the ordinary (commutative) four-dimensional spacetime. Here we consider a noncommutative manifold with a symplectic structure and construct a U(2,2) gauge theory on such a manifold by using the covariant coordinate method. Then we use the Seiberg-Witten map to express noncommutative quantities in terms of their commutative counterparts up to the first-order in noncommutative parameters. After imposing constraints we obtain a noncommutative gravity theory described by the Lagrangian with up to nonva…
The use of a diffeomorphism covariant star product enables us to construct diffeomorphism invariant gravities on noncommutative symplectic manifolds without twisting the symmetries. As an example, we construct noncommutative deformations of all two-dimensional dilaton gravity models thus overcoming some difficulties of earlier approaches. One of such models appears to be integrable. We find all classical solutions of this model and discuss their properties.
We review applications of noncommutative geometry in canonical quantum gravity. First, we show that the framework of loop quantum gravity includes natural noncommutative structures which have, hitherto, not been explored. Next, we present the construction of a spectral triple over an algebra of holonomy loops. The spectral triple, which encodes the kinematics of quantum gravity, gives rise to a natural class of semiclassical states which entail emerging fermionic degrees of freedom. In the particular semiclassical approximation where all gravitational degrees of freedom are turned off, a free …
We investigate a relation of the contravariant geometry to the emergent gravity from noncommutative gauge theories. We give a refined formulation of the contravariant gravity and provide solutions to the contravariant Einstein equation. We linearize the equation around background solutions, including curved ones. A noncommutative gauge theory on the Moyal plane can be rewritten as an ordinary gauge theory on a curved background via the Seiberg-Witten map, which is known as the emergent gravity. We show that this phenomenon also occurs for a gauge theory on a noncommutative homogeneous Kähler b…
The focus of this PhD thesis is on applications, new developments and extensions of the noncommutative gravity theory proposed by Julius Wess and his group. In part one we propose an extension of the usual symmetry reduction procedure to noncommutative gravity. We classify in the case of abelian Drinfel'd twists all consistent deformations of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies and of the Schwarzschild black hole. The deformed symmetry structure allows us to obtain exact solutions of the noncommutative Einstein equations in many of our models. In part two we develop a new for…
Starting from a standard noncommutative gauge theory and using the Seiberg-Witten map we propose a new version of a noncommutative gravity. We use consistent deformation theory starting from a free gauge action and gauging a killing symmetry of the background metric to construct a deformation of the gauge theory that we can relate with gravity. The result of this consistent deformation of the gauge theory is nonpolynomial in A_μ. From here we can construct a version of noncommutative gravity that is simpler than previous attempts. Our proposal is consistent and is not plagued with the problems…
We present a noncommutative extension of Einstein-Hilbert gravity in the context of twist-deformed space-time, with a $\star$-product associated to a quite general triangular Drinfeld twist. In particular the $\star$-product can be chosen to be the usual Groenewald-Moyal product. The action is geometric, invariant under diffeomorphisms and centrally extended Lorentz $\star$-gauge transformations. In the commutative limit it reduces to ordinary gravity, with local Lorentz invariance and usual real vielbein. This we achieve by imposing a charge conjugation condition on the noncommutative vielbei…
We present new classes of exact solutions with noncommutative symmetries constructed in vacuum Einstein gravity (in general, with nonzero cosmological constant), five dimensional (5D) gravity and (anti) de Sitter gauge gravity. Such solutions are generated by anholonomic frame transforms and parametrized by generic off-diagonal metrics. For certain particular cases, the new classes of metrics have explicit limits with Killing symmetries but, in general, they may be characterized by certain anholonomic noncommutative matrix geometries. We argue that different classes of noncommutative symmetrie…
The Einstein's gravity theory can be formulated as an SL(2,C) gauge theory in terms of spinor notations. In this paper, we consider a noncommutative space with the Poisson structure and construct an SL(2,C) formulation of gravity on such a space. Using the covariant coordinate technique, we build a gauge invariant action in which, according to the Seiberg-Witten map, the physical degrees of freedom are expressed in terms of their commutative counterparts up to the first order in noncommutative parameters.
A link between canonical quantum gravity and fermionic quantum field theory is established in this paper. From a spectral triple construction which encodes the kinematics of quantum gravity semi-classical states are constructed which, in a semi-classical limit, give a system of interacting fermions in an ambient gravitational field. The interaction involves flux tubes of the gravitational field. In the additional limit where all gravitational degrees of freedom are turned off, a free fermionic quantum field theory emerges.
We discuss the renormalization properties of noncommutative supersymmetric theories. We also discuss how the gauge field plays a role similar to gravity in noncommutative theories.
It is shown that for arbitrary connection in the vector bundle compatible with some Hermitian metric, the corresponding Fedosov trace functional commutes with involution generated by this metric. This result is then used to prove that certain noncommutative gravity actions are real in all powers of deformation parameter.
We discuss general properties of $A_\infty$-algebras and their applications to the theory of open strings. The properties of cyclicity for $A_\infty$-algebras are examined in detail. We prove the decomposition theorem, which is a stronger version of the minimal model theorem, for $A_\infty$-algebras and cyclic $A_\infty$-algebras and discuss various consequences of it. In particular it is applied to classical open string field theories and it is shown that all classical open string field theories on a fixed conformal background are cyclic $A_\infty$-isomorphic to each other. The same results h…
We question the notion of line element in some quantum spaces that are expected to play a role in quantum gravity, namely non-commutative deformations of Minkowski spaces. We recall how the implementation of the Leibniz rule forbids to see some of the infinitesimal deformed Poincare transformations as good candidates for Noether symmetries. Then we recall the more fundamental view on the line element proposed in noncommutative geometry, and re-interprete at this light some previous results on Connes' distance formula.
The work extends the A. Connes' noncommutative geometry to spaces with generic local anisotropy. We apply the E. Cartan's anholonomic frame approach to geometrical models and physical theories and develop the nonlinear connection formalism for projective module spaces. Examples of noncommutative generation of anholonomic Riemann, Finsler and Lagrange spaces are analyzed. We also present a research on noncommutative Finsler--gauge theories, generalized Finsler gravity and anholonomic (pseudo) Riemann geometry which appear naturally if anholonomic frames (vierbeins) are defined in the context of…
We analyze the question of possible quantum corrections in the entropic scenario of emergent gravity. Using a fuzzy sphere as a natural quasiclassical approximation for the spherical holographic screen, we analyze whether it is possible to observe such corrections to Newton's law in principle. The main outcome of our analysis is that without the complete knowledge of quantum dynamics of the microscopical degrees of freedom, any Plank scale correction cannot be trusted. Some perturbative corrections might produce reliable predictions well below the Plank scale.
A review is given of some 2-dimensional metrics for which noncommutative versions have been found. They serve partially to illustrate a noncommutative extension of the moving-frame formalism. All of these models suggest that there is an intimate relation between noncommutative geometry on the one hand and classical gravity on the other.
We study perturbative noncommutative quantum gravity by expanding the gravitational field about a fixed classical background. A calculation of the one loop gravitational self-energy graph reveals that only the non-planar graviton loops are damped by oscillating internal momentum dependent factors. The noncommutative quantum gravity perturbation theory is not renormalizable beyond one loop for matter-free gravity and all loops for matter interactions. Comments are made about the nonlocal gravitational interactions produced by the noncommutative spacetime geometry.
We study a deformation of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms of a smooth manifold. The deformation is based on a general twist. This leads to a differential geometry on a noncommutative algebra of functions whose product is a star-product. The class of noncommutative spaces studied is very rich. Non-anticommutative superspaces are also briefly considered. The differential geometry developed is covariant under deformed diffeomorphisms and it is coordinate independent. The main target of this work is the construction of Einstein's equations for gravity on noncommutative manifolds.
Noncommutative corrections to the metric tensor can be significantly enhanced by the presence of electromagnetic fields. Neutron stars, with their large magnetic fields, are possible candidates to search for such effects. We use precision measurements of the gravitational redshift from pulsars to put bounds on the parameters of noncommutative gravity.
We show that the $\star$-product for $U(su_2)$, group Fourier transform and effective action arising in [1] in an effective theory for the integer spin Ponzano-Regge quantum gravity model are compatible with the noncommutative bicovariant differential calculus, quantum group Fourier transform and noncommutative scalar field theory previously proposed for 2+1 Euclidean quantum gravity using quantum group methods in [2]. The two are related by a classicalisation map which we introduce. We show, however, that noncommutative spacetime has a richer structure which already sees the half-integer spin…
We propose a new theory of gravitation on noncommutative space-time which is invariant under the general coordinate transformations, while the local Lorentz invariance is realized as twisted gauge symmetry. Our theory is remarkably simpler compared to the existing formulations of noncommutative gravity.
We study Finsler black holes induced from Einstein gravity as possible effects of quantum spacetime noncommutativity. Such Finsler models are defined by nonholonomic frames not on tangent bundles but on (pseudo) Riemannian manifolds being compatible with standard theories of physics. We focus on noncommutative deformations of Schwarzschild metrics into locally anisotropic stationary ones with spherical/rotoid symmetry. There are derived the conditions when black hole configurations can be extracted from two classes of exact solutions depending on noncommutative parameters. The first class of m…
We show that U(\infty) symmetry transformations of the noncommutative field theory in the Moyal space are generated by a combination of two W_{1+\infty} algebras in the Landau problem. Geometrical meaning of this infinite symmetry is illustrated by examining the transformations of an invariant subgroup on the noncommutative solitons, which generate deformations and boosts of solitons. In particular, we find that boosts of solitons, which was first introduced in Ref[22], are valid only in the infinite "theta" limit.
We consider noncommutative gravity on a space with canonical noncommutativity that is based on the commutative MacDowell-Mansouri action. Gravity is treated as gauge theory of the noncommutative $SO(1,3)_\star$ group and the Seiberg-Witten (SW) map is used to express noncommutative fields in terms of the corresponding commutative fields. In the commutative limit the noncommutative action reduces to the Einstein-Hilbert action plus the cosmological term and the topological Gauss-Bonnet term. After the SW expansion in the noncommutative parameter the first order correction to the action, as expe…
We investigate a three-dimensional gravitational theory on a noncommutative space which has a cosmological constant term only. We found various kinds of nontrivial solutions, by applying a similar technique which was used to seek noncommutative solitons in noncommutative scalar field theories. Some of those solutions correspond to bubbles of spacetimes, or represent dimensional reduction. The solution which interpolates $G_{μν}=0$ and Minkowski metric is also found. All solutions we obtained are non-perturbative in the noncommutative parameter $θ$, therefore they are different from solutions f…
We provide a self-contained introduction to the quantum group approach to noncommutative geometry as the next-to-classical effective geometry that might be expected from any successful quantum gravity theory. We focus particularly on a thorough account of the bicrossproduct model noncommutative spacetimes of the form [t,x_i]=i λx_i and the correct formulation of predictions for it including a variable speed of light. We also study global issues in the Poincaré group in the model with the 2D case as illustration. We show that any off-shell momentum can be boosted to infinite negative energy by …
Noncommutative gravity in three dimensions with vanishing cosmological constant is examined. We find a solution which describes a spacetime in the presence of a torsional source. We estimate the phase shift for each partial wave of a scalar field in the spacetime by the Born approximation.
Gravity on noncommutative analogues of compact spaces can give a finite mode truncation of ordinary commutative gravity. We obtain the actions for gravity on the noncommutative two-sphere and on the noncommutative ${\bf CP}^2$ in terms of finite dimensional $(N\times N)$-matrices. The commutative large $N$ limit is also discussed.
We review the noncommutative gravity of Wess et al. and discuss its physical applications. We define noncommutative symmetry reduction and construct deformed symmetric solutions of the noncommutative Einstein equations. We apply our framework to find explicit deformed cosmological and black hole solutions and discuss their phenomenology. This article is based on a joint work with Thorsten Ohl.
We construct exact solutions to noncommutative gravity following the formulation of Chamseddine and show that they are in general accompanied by Abelian gauge fields which are first order in the noncommutative scale. This provides a mechanism for generating cosmological electromagnetic fields in an expanding space-time background, and also leads to multipole-like fields surrounding black holes. Exact solutions to noncommutative Einstein-Maxwell theory can give rise to first order corrections to the metric tensor, as well as to the electromagnetic fields. This leads to first order shifts in the…
An intersection of Noncommutative Geometry and Loop Quantum Gravity is proposed. Alain Connes' Noncommutative Geometry provides a framework in which the Standard Model of particle physics coupled to general relativity is formulated as a unified, gravitational theory. However, to this day no quantization procedure compatible with this framework is known. In this paper we consider the noncommutative algebra of holonomy loops on a functional space of certain spin-connections. The construction of a spectral triple is outlined and ideas on interpretation and classical limit are presented.
Based on the construction of the 4-dim noncommutative gravity model described in our previous work, first, a more extended description of the covariant noncommutative space (fuzzy 4-dim de Sitter space), which accommodates the gravity model, is presented and then the corresponding field equations, which are obtained after variation of the previously proposed action, are extracted. Also, a spontaneous breaking of the initial symmetry is performed, this time induced by the introduction of an auxiliary scalar field, and its implications in the reduced theory, which is produced after considering t…
Noncommutative geometry, in its many incarnations, appears at the crossroad of various researches in theoretical and mathematical physics: from models of quantum space-time (with or without breaking of Lorentz symmetry) to loop gravity and string theory, from early considerations on UV-divergencies in quantum field theory to recent models of gauge theories on noncommutative spacetime, from Connes description of the standard model of elementary particles to recent Pati-Salam like extensions. We list several of these applications, emphasizing also the original point of view brought by noncommuta…
In our previous work we have constructed a model of noncommutative (NC) gravity based on $SO(2,3)_\star$ gauge symmetry. In this paper we extend the model by adding matter fields: fermions and a $U(1)$ gauge field. Using the enveloping algebra approach and the Seiberg-Witten map we construct actions for these matter fields and expand the actions up to first order in the noncommutativity (deformation) parameter. Unlike in the case of pure NC gravity, first non-vanishing NC corrections are linear in the noncommutativity parameter. In the flat space-time limit we obtain a non-standard NC Electrod…
We formulate a noncommutative description of topological half-flat gravity in four dimensions. BRST symmetry of this topological gravity is deformed through a twisting of the usual BRST quantization of noncommutative gauge theories. Finally it is argued that resulting moduli space of instantons is characterized by the solutions of a noncommutative version of the Plebanski's heavenly equation.
The gravitational radiation power of a binary system in a noncommutative space is derived and it's rate of the period decrease is calculated to first order in noncommutativity parameter. By comparing the theoretical results with the observational data of the binary pulsar PSR 1913+16, we find a bound on the noncommutativity parameter.
We study the possibility of obtaining noncommutative gravity dynamics from string theory in the Seiberg-Witten limit. We find that the resulting low-energy theory contains more interaction terms than those proposed in noncommutative deformations of gravity. The role of twisted diffeomorphisms in string theory is studied and it is found that they are not standard physical symmetries. It is argued that this might be the reason why twisted diffeomorphisms are not preserved by string theory in the low energy limit. Twisted gauge transformations are also discussed.
Recently, it has been shown that the effective field theory of the Ponzano-Regge model with which spinless massive particles are coupled is given by three dimensional Euclidean noncommutative scalar field theory in the Lie algebraic noncommutative space [x^i, x^j]=2i kappa epsilon^{ijk}x_k (i,j,k=1,2,3) with kappa=4 pi G, where G is a gravitational constant. We examine whether there exists the relation between spinless massive particles coupled with 2+1 dimensional Einstein gravity and the Lorentzian version of the noncommutative field theory. Then, we point out that the momentum space of the …
We develop a general strategy to express noncommutative actions in terms of commutative ones by using a recently developed geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map (SW map) between noncommutative and commutative fields. We apply this general scheme to the noncommutative vierbein gravity action and provide a SW differential equation for the action itself as well as a recursive solution at all orders in the noncommutativity parameter θ. We thus express the action at order θ^n+2 in terms of noncommutative fields of order at most θ^n+1 and, iterating the procedure, in terms of noncommuta…
We present a Lorentzian version of three-dimensional noncommutative Einstein-AdS gravity by making use of the Chern-Simons formulation of pure gravity in 2+1 dimensions. The deformed action contains a real, symmetric metric and a real, antisymmetric tensor that vanishes in the commutative limit. These fields are coupled to two abelian gauge fields. We find that this theory of gravity is invariant under a class of transformations that reduce to standard diffeomorphisms once the noncommutativity parameter is set to zero.
We deform two-dimensional topological gravity by making use of its gauge theory formulation. The obtained noncommutative gravity model is shown to be invariant under a class of transformations that reduce to standard diffeomorphisms once the noncommutativity parameter is set to zero. Some solutions of the deformed model, like fuzzy AdS_2, are obtained. Furthermore, the transformation properties of the model under the Seiberg-Witten map are studied.
We present a unified description of gravity and electromagnetism in the framework of a $Z_2$ noncommutative differential calculus. It can be considered as a ``discrete version" of Kaluza-Klein theory, where the fifth continuous dimension is replaced by two discrete points. We derive an action which coincides with the dimensionally reduced one of the ordinary Kaluza-Klein theory.
We compare the effects of Noncommutative Geometry and Gravity's Rainbow on traversable wormholes which are sustained by their own gravitational quantum fluctuations. Fixing the geometry on a well tested model, we find that the final result shows that the wormhole is of the Planckian size. This means that the traversability of the wormhole is in principle, but not in practice.
We investigate the weak gravity bounds on the U(1) gauge theory and scalar field theories in various dimensional noncommutative space. Many results are obtained, such as the upper bound on the noncommutative scale $g_{YM}M_p$ for four dimensional noncommutative U(1) gauge theory. We also discuss the weak gravity bounds on their commutative counterparts. For example, our result on 4 dimensional noncommutative U(1) gauge theory reduces in certain limit to its commutative counterpart suggested by Arkani-Hamed et.al at least at tree-level.
We study quantisation of noncommutative gravity theories in two dimensions (with noncommutativity defined by the Moyal star product). We show that in the case of noncommutative Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity the path integral over gravitational degrees of freedom can be performed exactly even in the presence of a matter field. In the matter sector, we study possible choices of the operators describing quantum fluctuations and define their basic properties (e.g., the Lichnerowicz formula). Then we evaluate two leading terms in the heat kernel expansion, calculate the conformal anomaly and the Polyak…
We present a teleparallel complex gravity as the foundation for the formulation of noncommutative gravity theory. The negative energy ghosts in the conventional formulation with U(1,3) local Lorentz connection no longer exists, since the local Lorentz invariance is broken down to U(1,3) global Lorentz symmetry. As desired, our teleparallel complex gravity theory also passes the key classical test of perihelion advance of Mercury. Based on this result, we present a lagrangian for the noncommutative teleparallel gravity theory.
Starting from a self-dual formulation of gravity, we obtain a noncommutative theory of pure Einstein theory in four dimensions. In order to do that, we use Seiberg-Witten map. It is shown that the noncommutative torsion constraint is solved by the vanishing of commutative torsion. Finally, the noncommutative corrections to the action are computed up to second order.
Model of noncommutative gravity is constructed by means of Fedosov deformation quantization of endomorphism bundle. The fields describing noncommutativity -- symplectic form and symplectic connection -- are dynamical, and the resulting theory is completely coordinate covariant and background independent. Its interpretation in terms of Seiberg-Witten map is provided. Also, new action for ordinary (commutative) general relativity is given, which in the present context appears as a commutative limit of noncommutative theory.
First, we briefly review the description of gravity theories as gauge theories in three and four dimensions. Specifically, we recall the procedure in which the results of General Relativity in three and four dimensions are recovered in a gauge-theoretic approach. Also, the procedure is applied for the case of the Weyl gravity, too. Then, after reminding briefly the formulation of gauge theories on noncommutative spaces, we review our most recent works in which gravity models are constructed as gauge theories on noncommutative spaces.
A gravitational field can be defined in terms of a moving frame, which when made noncommutative yields a preferred basis for a differential calculus. It is conjectured that to a linear perturbation of the commutation relations which define the algebra there corresponds a linear perturbation of the gravitational field. This is shown to be true in the case of a perturbation of Minkowski space-time.
