In this work, we elaborate on the development of a general relativistic formalism that allows one to analytically express the mass and spin parameters of the Kerr black hole in terms of observational data: the total redshift and blueshift of photons emitted by geodesic massive particles revolving the black hole and their orbital parameters. Thus, we present concise closed formulas for the mass and spin parameters of the Kerr black hole in terms of few directly observed quantities in the case of equatorial circular orbits either when the black hole is static or is moving with respect to a distant observer. Furthermore, we incorporate the gravitational dragging effect generated by the rotating nature of the Kerr black hole into the analysis and elucidate its non-trivial contribution to the expression for the light bending parameter and the frequency shifts of photons emitted by orbiting particles that renders simple symmetric expressions for the kinematic redshift and blueshift. We also incorporate the dependency of the frequency shift on the azimuthal angle, a fact that allows one to express the total redshift/blueshift along any point of the orbit of the revolving particle for the cases when the black hole is both static or moving with respect to us. These formulas allow one to compute the Kerr black hole parameters by applying this general relativistic formalism to astrophysical systems like the megamaser accretion disks orbiting supermassive black holes at the core of active galactic nuclei. Our results open a new window to implement parameter estimation studies to constrain black hole variables, and they can be generalized to black hole solutions beyond Einstein gravity.
In this paper, we first investigate some aspects of frame dragging in strong gravity. The computations are carried out for the Kerr black hole and for the rotating Janis-Newman-Winicour solution, that is known to have a naked singularity on a surface at a finite radius. For the Kerr metric, a few interesting possibilities of gyroscope precession frequency, as measured by a Copernican observer outside the ergoregion, are pointed out. It is shown that for certain angular velocities of a stationary observer, this frequency might vanish exactly, close to the ergoregion. Similar computations are re…
In this communication we discuss two distinct Zeeman-type gravitomagnetic effects deserving attention since they can be easily characterized in their exact form, not via approximation procedures. Some observations are also made on gravitoelectric effects.
The deflection of light's trajectory has been studied in many different spacetime geometries in weak and strong gravity, including the special cases of spherically symmetric static and spinning black holes. It is also well known that the rotation of massive objects results in the dragging of inertial frames in the spacetime geometry. We present here a discussion of the asymmetry that appears explicitly in the exact analytical expression for the bending angle of light on the equatorial plane of the spinning, or Kerr, black hole.
Originally introduced in connection with general relativistic Coriolis forces, the term $\textit{frame-dragging}$ is associated today with a plethora of effects related to the off-diagonal element of the metric tensor. It is also frequently the subject of misconceptions leading to incorrect predictions, even of nonexistent effects. We show that there are three different levels of frame-dragging corresponding to three distinct gravitomagnetic objects: gravitomagnetic potential 1-form, field, and tidal tensor, whose effects are independent, and sometimes opposing. It is seen that, from the two a…
The equations of general relativity in the form of timelike and null geodesics that describe motion of test particles and photons in Kerr spacetime are solved exactly including the contribution from the cosmological constant. We then perform a systematic application of the exact solutions obtained to the following cases. The exact solutions derived for null, spherical, polar and non-polar orbits are applied for the calculation of frame dragging (Lense-Thirring effect) for the orbit of a photon around the galactic centre, assuming that the latter is a Kerr black hole for various values of the K…
The null geodesics that describe photon orbits in the spacetime of a rotating electrically charged black hole (Kerr-Newman) are solved exactly including the contribution from the cosmological constant. We derive elegant closed form solutions for relativistic observables such as the deflection angle and frame dragging effect that a light ray experiences in the gravitational fields (i) of a Kerr-Newman black hole and (ii) of a Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black hole. We then solve the more involved problem of treating a Kerr-Newman black hole as a gravitational lens, i.e. a KN black hole along with a s…
Brief comments on a plausible holographic relationship between the opposite rotational dragging effect of a (2+1)-dimensional rotating de Sitter space and the non-unitarity of a boundary conformal field theory are given. In addition to the comments, we study how the opposite rotational dragging effect affects the statistical-mechanical quantities in the rotating de Sitter space in comparison with a BTZ black hole.
A well-established phenomenon in general relativity is the dragging of inertial frames by a spinning object. In particular, due to the dragging of inertial frames by a ring orbiting a central black hole, the angular-velocity of the black-hole horizon in the composed black-hole-ring system is no longer related to the black-hole angular-momentum by the simple Kerr-like (vacuum) relation $Ω^{\text{Kerr}}_{\text{H}}(J_{\text{H}})=J_{\text{H}}/2M^2R_{\text{H}}$. Will has performed a perturbative treatment of the composed black-hole-ring system in the regime of slowly rotating black holes and found …
An exact expression derived in the literature for the rate of dragging of inertial frames (Lense-Thirring (LT) precession) in a general stationary spacetime, is reviewed. The exact LT precession frequencies for Kerr, Kerr-Taub-NUT and Taub-NUT spacetimes are explicitly derived. Remarkably, in the case of the zero angular momentum Taub-NUT spacetime, the frame-dragging effect is shown {\it not} to vanish, when considered for spinning test gyroscopes. The result becomes sharper for the case of vanishing ADM mass of that spacetime. We clarify how our results are consistent with claims in the rece…
In this paper we discuss the effect of gravitational frame dragging on orbiting qubits. In particular, we consider the Kerr spacetime geometry and spin-1/2 qubits moving in an equatorial radial fall with zero angular momentum and equatorial circular orbits. We ignore the ${\cal O}(\hbar)$ order effects due to spin-curvature coupling, which allows us to consider the motion of the spin-1/2 particles as Kerr geometry geodesics. We derive analytical expressions for the infinitesimal Wigner rotation and numerical results for their integration across the length of the particle's trajectory. To this …
We study the Hawking thermal spectrum in dragging coordinate system and the tunneling radiation characteristics of hot NUT-Kerr-Newman-Kasuya spacetime. The tunneling rates at the event and cosmological horizon are found to be related to the change of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The radiation spectrum is not pure thermal and thus there is a correction to the Hawking thermal spectrum.
We reconsider the Kerr metric with cosmological term $Λ$ imposing the condition that the angular velocity $ω$ of the dragging of the inertial frames vanishes at spatial boundaries. Some properties of the extreme black holes in the revisited solutions are discussed.
We investigate the redshift and blueshift of light emitted by timelike geodesic particles in orbits around a Kerr-Newman-(anti) de Sitter (KN(a)dS) black hole. Specifically we compute the redshift and blueshift of photons that are emitted by geodesic massive particles and travel along null geodesics towards a distant observer-located at a finite distance from the KN(a)dS black hole. For this purpose we use the Killing-vector formalism and the associated first integrals-constants of motion. We consider in detail stable timelike equatorial circular orbits of stars and express their corresponding…
The exact frame-dragging (or Lense-Thirring (LT) precession) rates for Kerr, Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) and Taub-NUT spacetimes have been derived. Remarkably, in the case of the `zero angular momentum' Taub-NUT spacetime, the frame-dragging effect is shown not to vanish, when considered for spinning test gyroscope. In the case of the interior of the pulsars, the exact frame-dragging rate monotonically decreases from the center to the surface along the pole and but it shows an `anomaly' along the equator. Moving from the equator to the pole, it is observed that this `anomaly' disappears after crossing…
We define a new parameter `cumulative drag index' for a particle in circular orbit in a stationary, axisymmetric gravitational field and study its behaviour in the two well known solutions of general relativity {\it viz.}, the Kerr spacetime and the Gödel spacetime, wherein the inertial frame dragging has an important role. As it shows similar behaviour for both co and counter rotating particles, it may indeed be an indication of the influence of the faraway universe on local physics and thus Machian.
The Cumulative Drag Index defined recently by Prasanna has been generalised to include the centrifugal acceleration. We have studied the behaviour of the drag index for the Kerr metric and the Neugebauer-Meinel metric representing a self-gravitating rotating disk and their Newtonian approximations. The similarity of the behaviour of the index for a given set of parameters both in the full and approximated forms, suggests that the index characterises an intrinsic property of spacetime with rotation. Analysing the index for a given set of parameters shows possible constraints on them.
The backreaction on black holes due to dragging heavy, rather than test, objects is discussed. As a case study, a regular black Saturn system where the central black hole has vanishing intrinsic angular momentum, J^{BH}=0, is considered. It is shown that there is a correlation between the sign of two response functions. One is interpreted as a moment of inertia of the black ring in the black Saturn system. The other measures the variation of the black ring horizon angular velocity with the central black hole mass, for fixed ring mass and angular momentum. The two different phases defined by th…
The exact solution for the motion of a test particle in a non-spherical polar orbit around a Kerr black hole is derived. Exact novel expressions for frame dragging (Lense-Thirring effect), periapsis advance and the orbital period are produced. The resulting formulae, are expressed in terms of Appell's first hypergeometric function $F_1$, Jacobi's amplitude function, and Appell's $F_1$ and Gau$ß$ hypergeometric function respectively. The exact expression for frame dragging is applied for the calculation of the Lense-Thirring effect for the orbits of S-stars in the central arcsecond of our Galax…
Timing a pulsar in a close orbit around the supermassive black hole SgrA* at the center of the Milky Way would open the window for an accurate determination of the black hole parameters and for new tests of General Relativity and alternative modified gravity theories. An important relativistic effect which has to be taken into account in the timing model is the propagation delay of the pulses in the gravitational field of the black hole. Due to the extreme mass ratio of the pulsar and the supermassive back hole we use the test particle limit to derive an exact analytical formula for the propag…
A central feature of the most elementary rotating black hole (BH) solution in General Relativity is the Kerr bound, which, for vacuum Kerr BHs, can be expressed either in terms of the ADM or the horizon "charges". This bound, however, is not a fundamental properties of General Relativity and stationary, asymptotically flat, regular (on and outside an event horizon) BHs are known to violate the Kerr bound, both in terms of their ADM and horizon quantities. Examples include the recently discovered Kerr BHs with scalar or Proca hair. Here, we point the fact that the Kerr bound in terms of horizon…
In this paper, we investigate so-called spherical photon orbits around a deformed Kerr black hole with an extra deformation parameter. The change in the azimuth $Δφ$ and the angle of dragging of nodes per revolution $ΔΩ$ of a complete latitudinal oscillated orbit is calculated analytically. Finally, representative six examples orbits are plotted out to illustrate how spherical photon orbits look like and exhibit some interesting behavior. Especially, this spherical photon orbits are absent in circular orbits and different from the Kerr case.
Recently Gibbons {\it et al.} in hep-th/0408217 defined a set of conserved quantities for Kerr-AdS black holes with the maximal number of rotation parameters in arbitrary dimension. This set of conserved quantities is defined with respect to a frame which is non-rotating at infinity. On the other hand, there is another set of conserved quantities for Kerr-AdS black holes, defined by Hawking {\it et al.} in hep-th/9811056, which is measured relative to a frame rotating at infinity. Gibbons {\it et al.} explicitly showed that the quantities defined by them satisfy the first law of black hole the…
We compute the conserved charges for Kerr anti-de Sitter spacetimes in various dimensions using the conformal and the counterterm prescriptions. We show that the conserved charge corresponding to the global timelike killing vector computed by the two methods differ by a constant dependent on the rotation parameter and cosmological constant in odd spacetime dimensions, whereas the charge corresponding to the rotational killing vector is the same in either approach. We comment on possible implications of our results to the AdS/CFT correspondence.
Line emission from an accretion disk and a corotating hot spot about a rotating black hole are considered for possible signatures of the frame-dragging effect. We explicitly compare integrated line profiles from a geometrically thin disk about a Schwarzschild and an extreme Kerr black hole, and show that the line profile differences are small if the inner radius of the disk is near or above the Schwarzschild stable-orbit limit of radius 6GM/c^2. However, if the inner disk radius extends below this limit, as is possible in the extreme Kerr spacetime, then differences can become significant, esp…
It was shown recently that the static tidal response coefficients, called Love numbers, vanish identically for Kerr black holes in four dimensions. In this work, we confirm this result and extend it to the case of spin-0 and spin-1 perturbations. We compute the static response of Kerr black holes to scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational fields at all orders in black hole spin. We use the unambiguous and gauge-invariant definition of Love numbers and their spin-0 and spin-1 analogs as Wilson coefficients of the point particle effective field theory. This definition also allows one to clear…

We obtain the deflection angle for a boosted Kerr black hole in the weak field approximation. We also study the behavior of light in the presence of plasma by considering different distributions: singular isothermal sphere, non-singular isothermal gas sphere, and plasma in a galaxy cluster. We find that the dragging of the inertial system along with the boosted parameter $Λ$ affect the value of the deflection angle. As an application, we studied the magnification for both uniform and SIS distributions.
In a recent work of Wu, Wang, Sun and Liu, a second-order explicit symplectic integrator was proposed for the integrable Kerr spacetime geometry. It is still suited for simulating the nonintegrable dynamics of charged particles moving around the Kerr black hole embedded in an external magnetic field. Its successful construction is due to the contribution of a time transformation. The algorithm exhibits a good long-term numerical performance in stable Hamiltonian errors and computational efficiency. As its application, the dynamics of order and chaos of charged particles is surveyed. In some ci…
We calculate the Casimir energy of a massless scalar field in a cavity formed by nearby parallel plates orbiting a rotating spherical body surrounded by quintessence, investigating the influence of the gravitational field on that energy, at zero temperature. This influence includes the effects due to the spacetime dragging caused by the source rotation as well as those ones due to the quintessence. We show that the energy depends on all the involved parameters, as source mass, angular momentum and quintessence state parameter, for any radial coordinate and polar angle. We show that at the nort…
We study the absorption of plane waves by Kerr black holes. We calculate the absorption cross section: the area of the black hole shadow at a finite wavelength. We present a unified picture of the absorption of all massless bosonic fields, focussing on the on-axis incidence case. We investigate the spin-helicity effect, arising from a coupling between dragging of frames and the helicity of a polarized wave. We introduce and calibrate an extended sinc approximation which provides new quantitative data on the spin-helicity effect in strong-field gravity.
For radio pulsars in orbit with a compact companion, pulsar timing observations have proved to be a powerful tool for identifying the physical nature of the companion. Unfortunately, perhaps the most intriguing system where such a tool could be used, a pulsar in orbit with a black hole, has yet to be discovered. In this paper we give a detailed investigation of what one can learn about the black hole companion via timing observations of the pulsar. We present an analytic calculation for the propagation delay caused by the frame-dragging effect and show that it has the same functional behavior …
The double-Kerr solution is generated using both a Backlund transformation and the Belinskii-Zakharov inverse-scattering technique. We build a dictionary between the parametrisations naturally obtained in the two methods and show their equivalence. We then focus on the asymptotically flat double-Kerr system obeying the axis condition which is Z_2^ϕinvariant; for this system there is an exact formula for the force between the two black holes, in terms of their physical quantities and the coordinate distance. We then show that 1) the angular velocity of the two black holes decreases from the usu…
The vorticity of world lines of observers associated to the rotation of a massive body was reported by Lense and Thirring more than a century ago. In their example the frame dragging effect induced by the vorticity, is directly (explicitly) related to the rotation of the source. However in many other cases it is not so, and the origin of vorticity remains obscure and difficult to identify. Accordingly, in order to unravel this issue, and looking for the ultimate origin of vorticity associated to frame dragging, we analyze in this manuscript very different scenarios where frame dragging effect …
In this work, we obtain the deflection angle for a boosted Kerr black hole in the weak field approximation using the optics in a curved spacetime developed by J.L. Synge in 1960. We study the behavior of light in the presence of plasma by considering different distributions: uniform plasma, singular isothermal sphere, non-singular isothermal gas sphere, and plasma in a galaxy cluster. We found that the dragging of the inertial system along with the boosted parameter $Λ$ affect the value of the deflection angle. As an application, we studied the magnification for both uniform and singular isoth…
Using the enhanced symmetry in the near-horizon region of the near-extremal dyonic Kerr-Newman (KN) black hole in the (A)dS space, we find the exact solutions for dyonic charged scalar field in terms of the hypergeometric function and explicitly compute the Schwinger effect for the emission of electric and/or magnetic charges. The emission formula confirms a universal factorization of the Schwinger formula in the AdS$_2$ and another Schwinger formula in the two-dimensional Rindler space determined by the effective temperature and the Hawking temperature with the chemical potentials of electric…
We investigate a slowly rotating black hole in four-dimensional extended Chern-Simons modified gravity. We obtain an approximate solution that reduces to the Kerr solution when a coupling constant vanishes. The Chern-Simons correction effectively reduces the frame-dragging effect around a black hole in comparison with that of the Kerr solution.
We consider the asymptotically flat double-Kerr solution for two equal mass black holes with either the same or opposite angular momentum and with a massless strut between them. For fixed angular momentum and mass, the angular velocity of two co-rotating Kerr black holes decreases as they approach one another, from the Kerr value at infinite separation to the value of a single Kerr black hole with twice the mass and the angular momentum at the horizons merging limit. We show that the ratio J/M^2 for extremal co-rotating Kerr black holes varies from unity at infinite separation to two at the me…
We investigate various aspects of energy extraction via the Penrose process in the Kerr-de Sitter spacetime. We show that the increase in the value of a positive cosmological constant, $Λ$, always reduces the efficiency of this process. The Kerr-de Sitter spacetime has two ergospheres -- associated with the black hole and the cosmological event horizons. We prove by analysing turning points of the trajectory that the Penrose process in the cosmological ergoregion is never possible. We next show that in this process both black hole and cosmological event horizons' areas increase, the later beco…
We revisit the conserved quantities of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Tulczyjew equations describing the motion of spinning particles on a fixed background. Assuming Ricci-flatness and the existence of a Killing-Yano tensor, we demonstrate that besides the two non-trivial quasi-conserved quantities, i.e. conserved at linear order in the spin, found by Rüdiger, non-trivial quasi-conserved quantities are in one-to-one correspondence with non-trivial mixed-symmetry Killing tensors. We prove that no such stationary and axisymmetric mixed-symmetry Killing tensor exists on the Kerr geometry. We discuss th…

Properties of (skew-symmetric) conformal Yano--Killing tensors are reviewed. Explicit forms of three symmetric conformal Killing tensors in Kerr spacetime are obtained from the Yano--Killing tensor. The relation between spin-2 fields and solutions to the Maxwell equations is used in the construction of a new conserved quantity which is quadratic in terms of the Weyl tensor. The formula obtained is similar to the functional obtained from the Bel--Robinson tensor and is examined in Kerr spacetime. A new interpretation of the conserved quantity obtained is proposed.
A rotating black hole causes the spin-axis of a nearby pulsar to precess due to geodetic and gravitomagnetic frame-dragging effects. The aim of our theoretical work here is to explore how this spin-precession can modify the rate at which pulses are received on earth. Towards this end, we obtain the complete evolution of the beam vectors of pulsars moving on equatorial circular orbits in the Kerr spacetime, relative to asymptotic fixed observers. We proceed to establish that such spin-precession effects can significantly modify observed pulse frequencies and, in specific, we find that the obser…
Frame dragging (Lense-Thirring effect) is generally associated with rotating astrophysical objects. However, it can also be generated by electromagnetic fields if electric and magnetic fields are simultaneously present. In most models of astrophysical objects, macroscopic charge neutrality is assumed and the entire electromagnetic field is characterized in terms of a magnetic dipole component. Hence, the purely electromagnetic contribution to the frame dragging vanishes. However, strange stars may posses independent electric dipole and neutron stars independent electric quadrupole moments that…
Gravitational Faraday Rotation (GFR) is a frame-dragging effect induced by rotating massive objects, which is one of the important, yet studied characteristics of lensed gravitational waves (GWs). In this work, we calculate the GFR angle $χ_g$ of GWs in the weak deflection limit, assuming it is lensed by a Kerr black hole (BH). We find that the GFR effect changes the initial polarization state of the lensed GW. Compared with the Einstein deflection angle, the dominant term of the rotation angle $χ_g$ is a second-order correction to the polarization angle, which depends on the light-of-sight co…
We present an analytic study of the mode-coupling phenomena for a scalar field propagating on a rotating Kerr background. Physically, this phenomena is caused by the dragging of reference frames, due to the black-hole (or star's) rotation. We find that different modes become mixed during the evolution and the asymptotic late-time tails are dominated by a mode which, in general, has an angular distribution different from the original one. We show that a rotating Kerr black hole becomes `bald' slower than a spherically-symmetric Schwarzschild black hole.
The Kerr metric is one of the most important solutions to Einstein's field equations, describing the gravitational field outside a rotating black hole. We thoroughly analyze the curvature scalar invariants to study the Kerr spacetime by examining and visualizing their covariant gradient fields. We discover that the part of the Kerr geometry outside the black hole horizon changes qualitatively depending on the spin parameter, a fact previously unknown. The number of observable critical points of the curvature invariants' gradient fields along the axis of rotation changes at several transitional…
We analytically calculate to leading order the asymptotic form of quasinormal frequencies of Kerr black holes in four, five and seven dimensions. All the relevant quantities can be explicitly expressed in terms of elliptical integrals. In four dimensions, we confirm the results obtained by Keshest and Hod by comparing the analytic results to the numerical ones.
We propose here a specific criterion to address the existence or otherwise of Kerr naked singularities, in terms of the precession of the spin of a test gyroscope due to the frame dragging by the central spinning body. We show that there is indeed an important characteristic difference in the behavior of gyro spin precession frequency in the limit of approach to these compact objects, and this can be used, in principle, to differentiate the naked singularity from black hole. Specifically, if gyroscopes are fixed all along the polar axis upto the horizon of a Kerr black hole, the precession fre…
From the viewpoint of differential geometry and topology, we investigate the characterization of the shadows in a Kerr spacetime. Two new quantities, the length of the shadow boundary and the local curvature radius are introduced. Each shadow can be uniquely determined by these two quantities. For the black hole case, the result shows that we can constrain the black hole spin and the angular coordinate of the observer only by measuring the maximum and minimum of the curvature radius. While for the naked singularity case, we adopt the length parameter and the maximum of the curvature radius. Th…
The super-entropic black hole, which possesses a noncompact horizon topology and violates the reverse isoperimetric inequality, has been found to satisfy both the thermodynamic first law and the Bekenstein-Smarr mass formula. In this paper, we first derive a new Christodoulou-Ruffini-like squared-mass formula for the four-dimensional Kerr-Newman-AdS super-entropic black hole, and then establish a set of very simple relations between thermodynamic quantities of the super-entropic Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ black hole and its usual counterparts. Using these relations, the thermodynamic quantities of th…
