Microgrids have more operational flexibilities as well as uncertainties than conventional power grids, especially when renewable energy resources are utilized. An energy storage based feedback controller can compensate undesired dynamics of a microgrid to improve its stability. However, the optimal feedback control of a microgrid subject to a large disturbance needs to solve a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman problem. This paper proposes a machine learning-based optimal feedback control scheme. Its training dataset is generated from a linear-quadratic regulator and a brute-force method respectively addressing small and large disturbances. Then, a three-layer neural network is constructed from the data for the purpose of optimal feedback control. A case study is carried out for a microgrid model based on a modified Kundur two-area system to test the real-time performance of the proposed control scheme.
One of the major challenges of voltage stabilization in converter-based DC microgrids are the multiple interacting units displaying intermittent supply behavior. In this paper, we address this by a decentralized scalable, plug-and-play voltage controller for voltage-source converters (VSCs) at primary level. In contrast to existing approaches, we follow a systematic and constructive design based on port-Hamiltonian systems (PHSs) which does neither require the heuristic proposition of a Lyapunov function nor the computation of auxilliary variables such as time-derivatives. By employing the Ham…
A new method for stability assessment of inverter-based microgrids is presented in this paper. It leverages the notion of critical clusters -- a localized group of inverters with parameters having the highest impact on the system stability. The spectrum of the weighted network admittance matrix is proposed to decompose a system into clusters and rank them based on their distances from the stability boundary. We show that each distinct eigenvalue of this matrix is associated with one cluster, and its eigenvectors reveal a set of inverters that participate most in the corresponding cluster. The …

With the gradual transformation of power generation towards renewables, distributed energy resources are becoming more and more relevant for grid stabilization. In order to involve all participants in the joint solution of this challenging task, we propose a distributed, model-based and unifying controller for frequency and voltage regulation in AC microgrids, based on steady-state optimal control. It not only unifies frequency and voltage control, but also incorporates the classic hierarchy of primary, secondary and tertiary control layers with each closed-loop equilibrium being a minimizer o…
This survey paper deals with the stabilization of nonlinear systems by analyzing the controlling method in terms of state feedback and output feedback. A brief overview of some literature on how the feedback controller of some dynamic systems in real applications like robots can be applicable is introduced. The aim is to give a direction about the methods of how to solve the state and output feedback stabilization problems for nonlinear systems based on feedback design methods and other theorems like the Lyapunov stability theorem. The feedback controllers can be constructed to ensure the orig…

In this paper, we address the global stabilization of chains of integrators by means of a bounded static feedback law whose p first time derivatives are bounded. Our construction is based on the technique of nested saturations introduced by Teel. We show that the control amplitude and the maximum value of its p first derivatives can be imposed below any prescribed values. Our results are illustrated by the stabilization of the third order integrator on the feedback and its first two derivatives.
This note studies the robust output feedback stabilization problem of a class of multi-input multi-output invertible nonlinear systems, for which an "ideal" state feedback based on feedback linearization can be designed under certain mild assumptions. By systematically designing a set of extended low-power high-gain observers, we show that this "ideal" linearizing feedback law can be approximately estimated, which provides a robust output feedback stabilizer such that the origin of the resulting closed-loop system is semiglobally asymptotically stable.
Stability and control of a non-linear system represent an important system configuration that frequently arises in practical engineering. Stability covers a vast range of systems that do not obey the superposition principle and applies to more real-world systems because all real control systems are non-linear. For efficient stabilization of these systems, a great number of researches have been proposed. This paper surveys some well-known facts as well as some recent developments and different strategies for the topic of stabilization of non-linear systems by output feedback control techniques.

This note studies the robust output feedback stabilization problem of multi-input multi-output invertible nonlinear systems with output-dependent multipliers. An "ideal" state feedback is first designed under certain mild assumptions. Then, a set of extended low-power high-gain observers is systematically designed, providing a complete estimation of the "ideal" feedback law. This yields a robust output feedback stabilizer such that the origin of the closed-loop system is semiglobally asymptotically stable, while improving the numerical implementation with the power of high-gain parameters up t…
The stabilization of unstable nonlinear systems and tracking control are challenging engineering problems due to the encompassed nonlinearities in dynamic systems and their scale. In the past decades, numerous observer-based control designs for dynamic systems in which the nonlinearity belongs to Lipschitz functions have been proposed. However, most of them only focus on output feedback and consequently, state feedback design remains less developed. To that end, this paper is dedicated to the problem of full-state feedback controller design for discrete-time Lipschitz nonlinear systems. In add…
In this note we study the generation of attractive oscillations of a class of mechanical systems with underactuation one. The proposed design consists of two terms, i.e., a partial linearizing state feedback, and an immersion and invariance orbital stabilization controller. The first step is adopted to simplify analysis and design, however, bringing an additional difficulty that the model loses its Euler-Lagrange structure after the collocated pre-feedback. To address this, we propose a constructive solution to the orbital stabilization problem via a smooth controller in an analytic form, and …
In this paper, we propose a minimax model predictive control (MPC)-based energy management system that is robust with respect to uncertainties in renewable infeed and load. The MPC formulation includes a model of low-level droop control with saturation at the power and energy limits of the units. Robust MPC-based energy management systems tend to under-utilize the renewable energy sources to guarantee safe operation. In order to mitigate this effect, we further consider droop control of renewable energy sources. For a microgrid with droop-controlled units, we show that enhancing droop feedback…
This paper developed a novel control approach for the sparse and safe frequency regulation for inverter intensive microgrids (MGs). In the scenario, the inverters and external grids are expected to reach a synchronized desired frequency under regulations. To this end, the active power set-point acting as a control from a high-level controller is designed while considering two important performance metrics "sparsity" and "safety", which are to reduce the information exchange between controllers and ensure that the frequency keeps in safety regions during the whole operation process. Our propose…
Network reconfiguration (NR) has recently received significant attention due to its potential to improve grid resilience by realizing self-healing microgrids (MGs). This paper proposes a new strategy for the real-time frequency regulation of a reconfigurable MG, wherein the feedforward control of synchronous and inverter-interfaced distributed generators (DGs) is achieved in coordination with the operations of sectionalizing and tie switches (SWs). This enables DGs to compensate more quickly, and preemptively, for a forthcoming variation in load demand due to NR-aided restoration. An analytica…
This paper studies the boundary output feedback stabilization of general 1-D reaction-diffusion PDEs in the presence of a state delay in the reaction term. The control input applies through a Robin boundary condition while the system output is selected as a either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary trace. The control strategy takes the form of a finite-dimensional observer-based controller with feedback and observer gains that are computed in order to dominate the state delayed term. For any arbitrarily given value of the state delay, we show the exponential stability of the resulting closed-loop s…
This paper addresses the topic of global output feedback stabilization of semilinear reaction-diffusion PDEs. The semilinearity is assumed to be confined into a sector condition. We consider two different types of actuation configurations, namely: bounded control operator and right Robin boundary control. The measurement is selected as a left Dirichlet trace. The control strategy is finite dimensional and is designed based on a linear version of the plant. We derive a set of sufficient conditions ensuring the global exponential stabilization of the semilinear reaction-diffusion PDE. These cond…
This paper discusses the boundary feedback stabilization of a reaction-diffusion equation with Robin boundary conditions and in the presence of a time-varying state-delay. The proposed control design strategy is based on a finite-dimensional truncated model obtained via a spectral decomposition. By an adequate selection of the number of modes of the original infinite-dimensional system, we show that the design performed on the finite-dimensional truncated model achieves the exponential stabilization of the original infinite-dimensional system. In the presence of distributed disturbances, we sh…
This paper presents a new method for dynamic output feedback stabilizing controller design for decomposable systems with switching topology and delay. Our approach consists of two steps. In the first step, we model the decomposable systems with switching topology as equivalent LPV systems with a piecewise constant parameter. In the second step, we design stabilizing output feedbacks for these LPV systems in the presence of a time-varying output delay using a trajectory-based stability analysis approach. We do not impose any constraint on the delay derivative. Finally, we illustrate our approac…
This paper discusses the stability analysis of linear parameter varying systems with a parameter-dependent delay where the parameters are assumed to be stochastic piecewise constants under spontaneous Poissonian jumps. Based on stochastic Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals, we also provide sufficient synthesis conditions for the gain-scheduled state-feedback controller with memory in terms of parameter-dependent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Such synthesis conditions are computationally intractable due to the presence of integral terms. However, we show that these LMIs can be equivalently re…
This paper is concerned with the output feedback stabilization of a reaction-diffusion equation by means of bounded control inputs in the presence of saturations. Using a finite-dimensional controller composed of an observer coupled with a finite-dimensional state-feedback, we derive a set of conditions ensuring the stability of the closed-loop plant while estimating the associated domain of attraction in the presence of saturations. This set of conditions is shown to be always feasible for an order of the observer selected large enough. The stability analysis relies on Lyapunov functionals al…
The work aims to stabilize the unstable index-1 descriptor systems by Riccati-based feedback stabilization via a modified form of Iterative Rational Krylov Algorithm (IRKA), which is a bi-tangential interpolation-based technique. In the basic IRKA, for the stable systems the Reduced Order Models (ROMs) can be found conveniently, but it is unsuitable for the unstable ones. In the proposed technique, the initial feedback is implemented within the construction of the projectors of the IRKA approach. The solution of the Riccati equation is estimated from the ROM achieved by IRKA and hence the low-…
This paper is concerned with the local output feedback stabilization of a nonlinear Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. The control is located at the boundary of the domain while the measurement is selected as a Neumann trace. This choice of system output requires the study of the system trajectories in $H^2$-norm. Moreover, the choice of the actuation/sensing scheme is discussed and adapted in function of the parameters of the plant in order to avoid the possible loss of controllability/observability property of certain eigenvalues of the underlying operator. This leads in certain cases to a multi…
This paper addresses the boundary output feedback stabilization of general 1-D reaction-diffusion PDEs with delayed boundary measurement. The output takes the form of a either Dirichlet or Neumann trace. The output delay can be arbitrarily large. The control strategy is composed of a finite-dimensional observer that is used to observe a delayed version of the first modes of the PDE and a predictor component which is employed to obtain the control input to be applied at current time. For any given value of the output delay, we assess the stability of the resulting closed-loop system provided th…
We solve the feedback stabilization problem for a tank, with friction, containing a liquid modeled by the viscous Saint-Venant system of Partial Differential Equations. A spill-free exponential stabilization is achieved, with robustness to the wall friction forces. A Control Lyapunov Functional (CLF) methodology with two different Lyapunov functionals is employed. These functionals determine specific parameterized sets which approximate the state space. The feedback law is designed based only on one of the two functionals (which is the CLF) while the other functional is used for the derivation…
We construct a robust stabilizing feedback law for the viscous Saint-Venant system of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with surface tension and without wall friction. The Saint-Venant system describes the movement of a tank which contains a viscous liquid. We assume constant contact angles between the liquid and the walls of the tank and we achieve a spill-free exponential stabilization with robustness to surface tension by using a Control Lyapunov Functional (CLF). The proposed CLF provides a parameterized family of sets which approximate the state space from the interior. Based on the C…
