Solute decoration at grain boundaries (GB) leads to a number of phenomenon such as changes in interface structure, mobility, cohesion etc.Recent experimental investigations on interfacial segregation in steels are based on microstructural characterisation using two correlative methodologies, namely,Transmission Electron Microscopy-Atom Probe Tomography (APT) and Electron Backscatter Diffraction-APT.Considering the growing interest in this avenue, the present review is aimed at addressing the common adsorption isotherms used for quantifying interfacial segregation and providing an overview of the present state of experimental research in the area of GB segregation in steels. The areas where an understanding of GB segregation may be utilised have also been highlighted with a focus on the experimental challenges associated with understanding GB segregation in steels.
We characterise the influence of the segregation behaviours of two typical alloying elements, aluminium and nickel, on the interfacial cohesive properties of copper-rich precipitates in ferritic steels, with a view towards understanding steel embrittlement. The first-principles method is used to compute the energetic and bonding properties of aluminium and nickel at the interfaces of the precipitates and corresponding fracture surfaces. Our results show the segregation of aluminium and nickel at interfaces of precipitates are both energetically favourable. We find that the interfacial cohesion…
We study three structurally different states of nanocrystalline 316 steel and show that the state, where boundaries containing excess concentration of alloying elements are combined with mobile dislocations in grain interiors, allows maintaining extraordinarily high strength and remarkably enhanced plasticity. Underlying mechanisms featuring interaction between the segregations and mobile dislocations are discussed.
Metallic materials, especially steel, underpin transportation technologies. High-manganese twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) austenitic steels exhibit exceptional strength and ductility from twins, low-energy microstructural defects that form during plastic loading. Their high-strength could help light-weighting vehicles, and hence cut carbon emissions. TWIP steels are however very sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement that causes dramatic losses of ductility and toughness leading to catastrophic failure of engineering parts. Here, we examine the atomic-scale chemistry and interaction of hydrog…
The nanostructure and the carbon distribution in a pearlitic steel processed by torsion under high pressure was investigated by three-dimensional atom probe. In the early stage of deformation (shear strain of 62), off-stoichiometry cementite was analysed close to interphase boundaries and a strong segregation of carbon atoms along dislocation cell boundaries was observed in the ferrite. At a shear strain of 300, only few nanoscaled off-stoichiometry cementite particles remain and a nanoscaled equiaxed grain structure with a grain size of about 20 nm was revealed. 3D-AP data clearly point out a…
Atomic scale understanding of the role of hydrogen and oxygen segregation in the embrittlement of grain boundaries in a twinning induced plasticity steel
In the drive towards higher strength alloys, a diverse range of alloying elements is employed to enhance their strength and ductility. Limited solid solubility of these elements in steel leads to segregation during casting which affects the entire down-stream processing and eventually the mechanical properties of the finished product. Although it is thought that the presence of continuous bands lead to premature failure, it has not been possible to verify this link. This poses as increasingly greater risk for higher alloyed, higher strength steels which are prone to centre-line segregation: it…
The channel segregation is a severe casting defect in steel ingots. The formation of channel segregation is generally attributed to the solute partition and the interdendritic thermosolutal convection in the mushy zone. In this article, the channel segregation in a steel ingot was carefully characterized by detailed experimental observation. A different formation mechanism for the channel segregation was revealed. In the mushy zone of the ingot, large amount of separate MnS inclusions move laterally and upwards. Some MnS inclusions will remain in the moving trace of inclusions. Such residual M…

Austenite reversion during tempering of a Fe-13.6Cr-0.44C (wt.%) martensite results in an ultrahigh strength ferritic stainless steel with excellent ductility. The austenite reversion mechanism is coupled to the kinetic freezing of carbon during low-temperature partitioning at the interfaces between martensite and retained austenite and to carbon segregation at martensite-martensite grain boundaries. An advantage of austenite reversion is its scalability, i.e., changing tempering time and temperature tailors the desired strength-ductility profiles (e.g. tempering at 400°C for 1 min. produces a…

The iron-chromium alloy and its derivatives are widely used for their remarkable resistance to corrosion, which only occurs in a narrow concentration range around 9 to 13 atomic percent chromium. Although known to be due to chromium enrichment of a few atoms thick layer at the surfaces, the understanding of its complex atomistic origin has been a remaining challenge. We report an investigation of the thermodynamics of such surfaces at the atomic scale by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We use a Hamiltonian which provides a parameterization of previous ab initio results and successfully descr…
The T91 grade and similar 9Cr tempered-martensitic steels (also known as ferritic-martensitic) are leading candidate structural alloys for fast fission nuclear and fusion power reactors. At low temperatures (300 to 400 $^\circ$C) neutron irradiation hardens and embrittles these steels, therefore it is important to investigate the origin of this mode of life limiting property degradation. T91 steel specimens were separately neutron irradiated to 2.14 dpa at 327 $^\circ$C and 8.82 dpa at 377 $^\circ$C in the Idaho National Laboratory Advanced Test Reactor. Atom probe tomography was used to inves…
The properties of bulk nanostructured materials are often controlled by atomic scale features like segregation along defects or composition gradients. Here we discuss about the complimentary use of TEM and APT to obtain a full description of nanostructures. The advantages and limitations of both techniques are highlighted on the basis of experimental data collected in severely deformed steels with a special emphasis on carbon spatial distribution.
The present study evidences the role of ferrite grain size distributions on the occurrence of void initiation in a low carbon steel. Various thermomechanical treatments were done to create ultrafine, bimodal and coarse range of ferrite grain distributions. A two parameter characterization of probable void initiation sites is proposed; elastic modulus difference and difference in Schmid factor of the grains surrounding the void. All microstructures were categorized based on the ability to ease or resist void nucleation. For coarse grains, elastic modulus difference as well as the Schmid factor …
The classical Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov approach for nucleation and growth models of diffusive phase transitions is revisited and applied to model the growth of ferrite in multiphase steels. For the prediction of mechanical properties of such steels, a deeper knowledge of the grain structure is essential. To this end, a Fokker-Planck evolution law for the volume distribution of ferrite grains is developed and shown to exhibit a log-normally distributed solution. Numerical parameter studies are given and confirm expected properties qualitatively. As a preparation for future work on paramet…
Two finite element level-set (FE-LS) formulations are compared for the modeling of grain growth of 316L stainless steel in terms of grain size, mean values and histograms. Two kinds of microstructures are considered, some are generated statistically from EBSD maps and the others are generated by immersion of EBSD data in the FE formulation. Grain boundary (GB) mobility is heterogeneously defined as a function of the GB disorientation. On the other hand, GB energy is considered as heterogeneous or anisotropic, respectively defined as a function of the disorientation and both the GB misorientati…
Segregation of impurities to grain boundaries plays an important role in both the stability and macroscopic behavior of polycrystalline materials. The research objective in this work is to better characterize the energetics and length scales involved with the process of solute and impurity segregation to grain boundaries. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to calculate the segregation energies for carbon within multiple grain boundary sites over a database of 125 symmetric tilt grain boundaries in Fe. The simulation results show that the majority of atomic sites near the grain boundary ha…
Metal anodes in high power source (HPS) devices erode during operation due to hydrogen outgassing and plasma formation, both of which are thermally driven phenomena generated by the electron beam impacting the anode s surface. This limits the lowest achievable pressure in an HPS device, which reduces its efficiency. Laser surface melting the 304 stainless steel anodes by a continuous wave fiber laser showed a reduction in hydrogen outgassing by a factor of ~4 under 50 keV electron bombardment, compared to that from untreated stainless steel. This is attributed to an increase in the grain size …
Mg grain boundary (GB) segregation and GB diffusion can impact the processing and properties of Al-Mg alloys. Yet, Mg GB diffusion in Al has not been measured experimentally or predicted by simulations. We apply atomistic computer simulations to predict the amount and the free energy of Mg GB segregation, and the impact of segregation on GB diffusion of both alloy components. At low temperatures, Mg atoms segregated to a tilt GB form clusters with highly anisotropic shapes. Mg diffuses in Al GBs slower than Al itself, and both components diffuse slowly in comparison with Al GB self-diffusion. …
This paper studies how solute segregation and its relationship to grain boundary energy in binary alloys is captured in the phase field crystal (PFC) formalism, a continuum method that incorporates atomic scale elasto-plastic effects on diffusional time scales. Grain boundaries are simulated using two binary alloy PFC models --- the original binary model by Elder et al (2007) and the XPFC model by Greenwood et al (2011). In both cases, grain boundary energy versus misorientation data is shown to be well described by Read-Shockley theory. The Gibbs Adsorption Theorem is then used to derive a se…
This work explains the occurrence of transformation-induced plasticity via stress-assisted martensite, when designing ultrafine-grained duplex steels. It is found that, when the austenite is reduced to a fine scale of about 300 nm, the initial deformation-induced microstructure can be dominated by parallel lamellae of epsilon martensite or mechanical twinning, which cannot efficiently provide nucleation sites for strain-induced martensite. Hence, alpha martensite nucleation occurs independently by a stress-assisted process that enhances transformation-induced plasticity in ultrafine-grained au…
The control of solute segregation at grain boundaries (GBs) is essential in engineering alloy properties, however the structure-activity relationship of the key parameter-the segregation energies-still remains elusive. Here we propose the electronic and geometric descriptors of GB segregation based on the valence, electronegativity and size of solutes and the non-local coordination number of free surfaces, with which we build a predictive framework to determine the segregation energies across different solutes, matrices, GB structures and segregation sites. This framework uncovers not only the…
Grain boundary wetting as a preliminary stage for zinc induced grain boundary weakening and embrittlement in a Zn coated press hardened 20MnB8 steel was analyzed by means of electron backscatter diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, atom probe tomography and transmission electron microscopy on the nanometer scale. Microcracks at prior austenite grain boundaries were observed and structures that developed after microcrack formation were identified. Zn/Fe intermetallic phases with grain sizes smaller than 100 nm in diameter are present at the crack surfaces …
While it is known that alloy components can segregate to grain boundaries (GBs), and that the atomic mobility in GBs greatly exceeds the atomic mobility in the lattice, little is known about the effect of GB segregation on GB diffusion. Atomistic computer simulations offer a means of gaining insights into the segregation-diffusion relationship by computing the GB diffusion coefficients of the alloy components as a function of their segregated amounts. In such simulations, thermodynamically equilibrium GB segregation is prepared by a semi-grand canonical Monte Carlo method, followed by calculat…
An age-hardenable Al-Cu-Mg alloy (A2024) was processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) for producing an ultrafine-grained structure. The alloy was further aged for extra strengthening. The tensile strength then reached a value as high as ~1 GPa. The microstructures were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. The mechanism for the high strength was clarified in terms of solid-solution hardening, cluster hardening, work hardening, dispersion hardening and grain boundary hardening. It is shown that the segregation of solute atoms at grain boundaries including subgr…
Segregation-induced structural transitions in metallic grain boundaries are studied with hybrid atomistic Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics simulations using Cu-Zr as a model system, with a specific emphasis on understanding the effect of grain boundary character. With increasing global composition, the six grain boundary types chosen for this study first form ordered complexions, with the local segregation pattern depending on the grain boundary core structure, then transform into disordered complexions when the grain boundary composition reaches a critical value that is temperature dependent. T…
The structure of low-carbon steel after twist extrusion is tested with using electron backscattered diffraction. It has been shown that warm twist extrusion results in grain refinement with conservation of a substantial part of high-angle boundaries, smearing of the texture, more homogeneous distribution of grains and development of the dynamic recrystallization processes.
Grain boundary segregations were investigated by Atom Probe Tomography in an Al-Mg alloy, a carbon steel and Armco\trademark Fe processed by severe plastic deformation (SPD). In the non-deformed state, the GBs of the aluminium alloy are Mg depleted, but after SPD some local enrichment up to 20 at.% was detected. In the Fe-based alloys, large carbon concentrations were also exhibited along GBs after SPD. These experimental observations are attributed to the specific structure of GBs often described as "non-equilibrum" in ultra fine grained materials processed by SPD. The grain boundary segregat…

The effect of crystallography on transgranular chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (TGCISCC) of arc welded 304L austenitic stainless steel is studied on >300 grains along crack paths. Schmid and Taylor factor mismatches across grain boundaries (GBs) reveal that cracks propagate either from a hard to soft grain, which can be explained merely by mechanical arguments, or soft to hard grain. In the latter case, finite element analysis reveals that TGCISCC will arrest at GBs without sufficient mechanical stress, favorable crystallographic orientations, or crack tip corrosion. GB type does no…
Interfacial segregation can stabilize grain structures and even lead to grain boundary complexion transitions. However, understanding of the complexity of such phenomena in polycrystalline materials is limited, as most studies focus on bicrystal geometries. In this work, we investigate interfacial segregation and subsequent complexion transitions in polycrystalline Cu-Zr alloys using hybrid Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics simulations. No significant change in the grain size or structure is observed upon Zr dopant addition to a pure Cu polycrystal at moderate temperature, where grain boundary se…
A 10 wt.% nickel-steel has been developed for high pressures and low-temperature applications, due to its high strength, excellent toughness, and low ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). Under dynamic loading conditions this steel is, however, prone to shear localization that manifests as adiabatic shear bands (ASBs). The temperature increases and thermoplastic microstructural evolution in the ASB are studied in detail, from the macroscopic length scale to the atomic-scale employing correlative electron-backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and at…
Interfacial segregation and chemical short-range ordering influence the behavior of grain boundaries in complex concentrated alloys. In this study, we use atomistic modeling of a NbMoTaW refractory complex concentrated alloy to provide insight into the interplay between these two phenomena. Hybrid Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations are performed on columnar grain models to identify equilibrium grain boundary structures. Our results reveal extended near-boundary segregation zones that are much larger than traditional segregation regions, which also exhibit chemical patterning that b…
Grain boundary embrittlement occurs when a solute enriches at a grain boundary and lowers its cohesive energy. While grain boundary enrichment is often attributed to equilibrium segregation effects, most models of embrittlement consider either the energetics of decohesion or the equilibrium adsorption at the boundary, but not both phenomena together. We develop a model for the change in cohesive energy of a grain boundary of a pure metal upon introduction of solute under conditions of equilibrium segregation prior to fracture. A heuristic grain boundary cohesion map is presented to delineate w…
Atomic-scale simulations are performed to study the effect of solute segregation on the shear-induced motion of select grain boundaries in the classical $α$-Fe/C system. At shear rates larger than the solute diffusion rate, we observe a transition from coupled motion to sliding. Below a critical solute excess, the boundaries break away from the solute cloud and move in a coupled motion. At smaller shear rates, we observe extrinsic coupled motion at small stresses indicating that the coupling is aided by convective solute diffusion along the boundary. Our studies underscore the role of solutes …
Based on ab-initio simulations, we report on the nature of principally different mechanisms for interaction of Mg and Zn atoms with grain boundaries in Al alloys leading to different morphology of segregation. The Mg atoms segregate in relatively wide GB region with heterogeneous agglomerations due to the deformation mechanism of solute-GB interaction. In contrast, in the case of Zn atoms an electronic mechanism associated with the formation of directional bonding is dominating in the solute-GB interaction. As a result, for Zn atoms it is energetically beneficial to occupy interstitial positio…
The segregation of solute atoms to grain boundaries can have a large influence on the mechanical behavior of polycrystals, particularly in metallic alloys. An overview of 400 calculations of solute-induced changes in grain boundary cohesion from 77 separate studies quantitatively demonstrates that the majority of the variation in solute-induced changes in boundary cohesion is explained by simple bond-breaking arguments. This trend is robust to changes in crystal structure and computational methods. The secondary contributions to embrittlement from other mechanisms, such as atomic size effects …
We have studied the fundamental process of hydrogen binding at interstitial, vacancy and grain boundary (GB) in palladium crystals using Density-Functional Theory. It showed that hydrogen prefers to occupy the octahedral interstitial site in Pd matrix, however a stable H-vacancy complex with most H occupations would contain up to eight hydrogen atoms surrounding the vacancy at tetrahedral sites. Furthermore, H presence assists the pairing or formation of nearby vacancies, which in agreement with previous suggestions by both experiment and theory investigation. Also, this observation could impl…
Phase transformations in metallic grain boundaries (GBs) present significant fundamental interest in the context of thermodynamics of low-dimensional physical systems. We report on atomistic computer simulations of the Cu-Ag system that provide direct evidence that GB phase transformations in a single-component GB can continue to exist in a binary alloy. This gives rise to segregation-induced phase transformations with varying chemical composition at a fixed temperature. Furthermore, for such transformations we propose an approach to calculations of free energy differences between different GB…
