We prove that every element of order 2 in the Brauer group of a complex Kummer surface X descends to an Enriques quotient of X. In 'generic' cases this gives a bijection between the set Enr(X) of Enriques quotients of X up to isomorphism and the set of Brauer classes of X of order 2. For some K3 surfaces of Picard rank 20 we prove that the fibres of the map from Enr(X) to Br(X)[2] above the non-zero points have the same order.

Let S be a complex Enriques surface; it is the quotient of a K3 surface X by a fixed-point-free involution. The Brauer group Br(S) has a unique nonzero element. We describe its pull-back in Br(X), and show that the surfaces S for which it is trivial form a countable union of hypersurfaces in the moduli space of Enriques surfaces.
We present the classification of involutions on Enriques surfaces. We classify those into 18 types with the help of the lattice theory due to Nikulin. We also give all examples of the classification.
We classify Enriques involutions on a K3 surface, up to conjugation in the automorphism group, in terms of lattice theory. We enumerate such involutions on singular K3 surfaces with transcendental lattice of discriminant smaller than or equal to 36. For 11 of these K3 surfaces, we apply Borcherds method to compute the automorphism group of the Enriques surfaces covered by them. In particular, we investigate the structure of the two most algebraic Enriques surfaces.
The three pencils of K3 surfaces of minimal discriminant whose general element covers at least one Enriques surface are Kondō's pencils I and II, and the Apéry--Fermi pencil. We enumerate and investigate all Enriques surfaces covered by their general elements.
We give an explicit description of the Godeaux surfaces that admit an involution such that the quotient surface is birational to an Enriques surface; these surfaces give a 6-dimensional unirational irreducible subset of the moduli space of surfaces of general type. In addition, we describe the Enriques surfaces that are birational to the quotient of a Godeaux surface by an involution and we show that they give a 5-dimensional unirational irreducible subset of the moduli space of Enriques surfaces. Finally, by degenerating our description we obtain some examples of non-normal stable Godeaux sur…
In this short note we prove that an involution on certain examples of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$, acts as identity on the Chow group of zero cycles of the relevant surface. In particular we consider examples of such surfaces when the quotient is an Enriques surface and show that the Bloch's conjecture holds for such surfaces.
We study the pencils of minimal degree on the smooth curves lying on a K3 surface X which carries a fixed-point free involution. Generically, the gonality of these curves is totally governed by the genus 1 fibrations of X
This paper develops families of complex Enriques surfaces whose Brauer groups pull back identically to zero on the covering K3 surfaces. Our methods rely on isogenies with Kummer surfaces of product type. We offer both lattice theoretic and geometric constructions. We also sketch how the construction connects to string theory and Picard-Fuchs equations in the context of Enriques Calabi-Yau threefolds.
In 2011, Vàrilly-Alvarado and the last author constructed an Enriques surface $X$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with an étale-Brauer obstruction to the Hasse principle and no algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction. In this paper, we show that the nontrivial Brauer class of $X_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ does not descend to $\mathbb{Q}$. Together with the results of Vàrilly-Alvarado and the last author, this proves that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is insufficient to explain all failures of the Hasse principle on Enriques surfaces. The methods of this paper build on the ideas in several recent papers by the last autho…
Let Y be a real Enriques surface, _2Br(Y) the subgroup of elements of order 2 of Br(Y), and s, s_{or}, and s_{nor} the number of all connected, connected orientable, and connected non-orientable components of Y(R) respectively. Using universal covering K3-surface X of Y, we connect dim _2Br(Y) with the s, s_{or} and s_{nor}. As a geometric corollary of our considerations, we show that s \le 6 and s_{nor} \le 4.
In this paper, we prove, as the complex case, a supersingular K3 surface over a field of odd characteristic has an Enriques involution if and only if there exists a primitive embedding of the twice of the Enriques lattice into the Neron-Severi group such that the orthogonal complement of the embedding has no vector of self-intersection -2 using the Crystalline Torelli theorem. By this criterion and some lattice calculation, we prove that when the characteristic of the base field is p=19 or p>23, a superingular K3 surface is an Enriques K3 surface if and only if the Artin invariant is less than…
We construct an Enriques surface X over Q with empty étale-Brauer set (and hence no rational points) for which there is no algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. In addition, if there is a transcendental obstruction on X, then we obtain a K3 surface that has a transcendental obstruction to the Hasse principle.
This paper classifies Enriques surfaces whose K3-cover is a fixed Picard-general Jacobian Kummer surface. There are exactly 31 such surfaces. We describe the free involutions which give these Enriques surfaces explicitly. As a biproduct, we show that Aut(X) is generated by elements of order 2, which is an improvement of the theorem of S. Kondo.
This paper proposes a new geometric construction of Enriques surfaces. Its starting point are K3 surfaces with jacobian elliptic fibration which arise from rational elliptic surfaces by a quadratic base change. The Enriques surfaces obtained in this way are characterised by elliptic fibrations with a rational curve as bisection which splits into two sections on the covering K3 surface. The construction has applications to the study of Enriques surfaces with specific automorphisms. It also allows us to answer a question of Beauville about Enriques surfaces whose Brauer groups show an exceptiona…
We consider the class of singular double coverings $X \to \PP^3$ ramified in the degeneration locus $D$ of a family of 2-dimensional quadrics. These are precisely the quartic double solids constructed by Artin and Mumford as examples of unirational but nonrational conic bundles. With such quartic surface $D$ one can associate an Enriques surface $S$ which is the factor of the blowup of $D$ by a natural involution acting without fixed points (such Enriques surfaces are known as nodal Enriques surfaces or Reye congruences). We show that the nontrivial part of the derived category of coherent she…
Let $S$ be the (minimal) Enriques surface obtained from the symmetric quartic surface $(\sum_{i<j}x_ix_j)^2=kx_1x_2x_3x_4$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $k\neq 0,4,36$, by taking quotient of the Cremona action $(x_i) \mapsto (1/x_i)$. The automorphism group of $S$ is a semi-direct product of a free product $\mathcal{F}$ of four involutions and the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_4$. Up to action of $\mathcal{F}$, there are exactly $29$ elliptic pencils on $S$.
Consider an arbitrary automorphism of an Enriques surface with its lift to the covering K3 surface. We prove a bound of the order of the lift acting on the anti-invariant cohomology sublattice of the Enriques involution. We use it to obtain some mod 2 constraint on the original automorphism. As an application, we give a necessary condition for Salem numbers to be dynamical degrees on Enriques surfaces and obtain a new lower bound on the minimal value. In the Appendix, we give a complete list of Salem numbers that potentially may be the minimal dynamical degree on Enriques surfaces and for whic…
In this article we explicitly compute equations of an Enriques surface via the involution on a K3 surface. We also discuss its tropicalization and compute the tropical homology, thus recovering a special case of the result of \cite{IKMZ}, and establish a connection between the dimension of the tropical homology groups and the Hodge numbers of the corresponding algebraic Enriques surface.
An involution on a surface induces involutions on the cohomology, the Chow group and the Brauer group of the surface. We give a detailed study of those actions. We show that the odd part of these groups can be used to describe the geometry of cubic fourfolds and conic bundles over $\mathbb{P}^3$.

Let X be a real projective algebraic manifold, s numerates connected components of X(R) and _2Br(X) the subgroup of elements of order 2 of the cohomological Brauer group Br(X). We study the natural homomorphism ξ: _2Br(X) \to (Z/2)^s and prove that ξis epimorphic if H^3(X(C)/G;Z/2) \to H^3(X(R);Z/2) is injective. Here G=Gal(C/R). For an algebraic surface X with H^3(X(C)/G;Z/2)=0 and X(R)\not=\emptyset, we give a formula for dim _2Br(X). As a corollary, for a real Enriques surfaces Y, the ξis epimorphic and dim _2Br(Y)=2s-1 if both liftings of the antiholomorphic involution of Y to the universa…
Let X be a K3 surface with an involution g which has non-empty fixed locus X^g and acts non-trivially on a non-zero holomorphic 2-form. We shall construct all such pairs (X, g) in a canonical way, from some better known double coverings of log del Pezzo surfaces of index at most 2 or rational elliptic surfaces, and construct the only family of each of the three extremal cases where X^g contains 10 (maximum possible) curves. We also classify rational log Enriques surfaces of index 2. Our approach is more geometrical rather than lattice-theoretical (see Nikulin's paper for the latter approach).
We study surfaces of general type $S$ with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=3$ having an involution $i$ such that the bicanonical map of $S$ is not composed with $i$. It is shown that, if $S/i$ is not rational, then $S/i$ is birational to an Enriques surface or it has Kodaira dimension $1$ and the possibilities for the ramification divisor of the covering map $S\rightarrow S/i$ are described. We also show that these two cases do occur, providing an example. In this example $S$ has a hyperelliptic fibration of genus $3$ and the bicanonical map of $S$ is of degree $2$ onto a rational surface.
Generalizing a theorem of Albert, Saltman showed that an Azumaya algebra $A$ over a ring represents a $2$-torsion class in the Brauer group if and only if there is an algebra $A'$ in the Brauer class of $A$ admitting an involution of the first kind. Knus, Parimala, and Srinivas later showed that one can choose $A'$ such that $\mathrm{deg}\, A'=2\mathrm{deg}\, A$. We show that $2\mathrm{deg}\, A$ is the lowest degree one can expect in general. Specifically, we construct an Azumaya algebra $A$ of degree $4$ and period $2$ such that the degree of any algebra $A'$ in the Brauer class of $A$ admitt…
Let X be a smooth double cover of a geometrically ruled surface defined over a separably closed field of characteristic different from 2. The main result of this paper is a finite presentation of the 2-torsion in the Brauer group of X with generators given by central simple algebras over the function field of X and relations coming from the Néron-Severi group of X. In particular, the result gives a central simple algebra representative for the unique nontrivial Brauer class on any Enriques surface. An example demonstrating the applications to the study of rational points is given.
Let $S$ be a smooth projective surface with $p_g=0$, let $ι$ be a regular involution acting on $S$, and let $W$ be the resolution of singularities of the quotient surface $S/ι$. In the paper we prove that Bloch's conjecture holds for the surface $S$ if and only if it holds for the surface $W$. This yields Bloch's conjecture for all surfaces $S$ whenever the same conjecture is true for the desingularized quotient $W$. In particular, Bloch's conjecture holds true for all numerical Godeaux surfaces with involutions, a "half" of Campedelli surfaces with involutions, the surface of Craighero and Ga…
Minimal algebraic surfaces of general type with the smallest possible invariants have geometric genus zero and K^2=1 and are usually called "numerical Godeaux surfaces". Although they have been studied by several authors, their complete classification is not known. In this paper we classify numerical Godeaux surfaces with an involution, i.e. with an automorphism of order 2. We prove that they are birationally equivalent either to double covers of Enriques surfaces, or to double planes of two different types: the branch curve either has degree 10 and suitable singularities, originally suggested…
This is the abstruct of the revised paper. We study the equivariant analytic torsion for K3 surfaces with an anti-symplectic involution with the invariant lattice M (such a surface is called a 2-elementary K3 surface of type M in this paper), and show that it (together with the analytic torsion of the fixed curves) can be identified with the automorphic form on the moduli space characterizing the discriminant locus. Three lattices A_1, II_{1,1}(2), II_{1,9}(2) are of particular interest, because they consist of the building blocks of 2-elementary lattices. An explicit formula is given for them…
We study the geometry of some moduli spaces of twisted sheaves on K3 surfaces. In particular we introduce induced automorphisms from a K3 surface on moduli spaces of twisted sheaves on this K3 surface. As an application we prove the unirationality of moduli spaces of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds of $K3^{[2]}$-type admitting non symplectic involutions with invariant lattices $U(2)\oplus D_4(-1)$ or $U(2)\oplus E_8(-2)$. This complements the results obtained in [Mongardi and Wandel 2015], [Bossiere et al 2016], and the results from [arXiv:1603.00403] about the geometry of IHS fou…
We define a period map for classical Campedelli surfaces, using a covering trick as in the case of Enriques surfaces: the period map is shown to come from a family of Enriques surfaces, obtained as quotients of the Campedelli surface by an involution. The period map realises an isomorphism between a projective variety obtained by invariant theory, and the Baily-Borel compactification of an arithmetic quotient, in the same fashion as in the work of Matsumoto, Sasaki and Yoshida. The result is proved from scratch using traditional methods. As another consequence we determine properties of the mo…
Given an Enriques surface $T$, its universal K3 cover $f: S\to T$, and a genus $g$ linear system $|C|$ on $T$, we construct the relative Prym variety $P_H=\Prym_{v, H}(\D/\CC)$, where $\CC\to |C|$ and $\D\to |f^*C|$ are the universal families, $v$ is the Mukai vector $(0,[D], 2-2g)$ and $H$ is a polarization on $S$. The relative Prym variety is a $(2g-2)$-dimensional possibly singular variety, whose smooth locus is endowed with a hyperkähler structure. This variety is constructed as the closure of the fixed locus of a symplectic birational involution defined on the moduli space $M_{v,H}(S)$. T…
