We construct minimal and irredundant generating sets for a family of submonoids of the monoid of $n \times n$ upper triangular matrices over a commutative semiring. We show that the monoid of $n \times n$ matrices over the tropical integers, $M_n(\mathbb{Z}_\mathrm{max})$, is finitely generated if and only if $n \leq 2$, and finitely presented if and only if $n = 1$. Minimal and irredundant generating sets are explicitly constructed when $n \leq 3$. We then construct a presentation for the monoid of $n \times n$ upper triangular matrices over the tropical integers, $UT_n(\mathbb{Z}_\mathrm{max})$, demonstrating that it is finitely presented for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$. Finally, we establish upper bounds on the polynomial degree of the growth function of finitely generated subsemigroups of the monoid of $n \times n$ matrices over a bipotent semiring and show that these bounds are sharp for the tropical semiring.
We introduce a faithful tropical linear representation of the Chinese monoid, and thus prove that this monoid admits all the semigroup identities satisfied by tropical triangular matrices.
We show that the submonoid of all nxn triangular tropical matrices satisfies a nontrivial semigroup identity and provide a generic construction for classes of such identities. The utilization of the Fibonacci number formula gives us an upper bound on the length of these 2-variable semigroup identities.
We study semigroup varieties generated by full and upper triangular tropical matrix semigroups and the plactic monoid of rank 4. We prove that the upper triangular tropical matrix semigroup $UT_n(\mathbb{T})$ generates a different semigroup variety for each dimension $n$. We show a weaker version of this fact for the full matrix semigroup: full tropical matrix semigroups of different prime dimensions generate different semigroup varieties. For the plactic monoid of rank 4, $\mathbb{P}_4$, we find a new set of identities satisfied by $\mathbb{P}_4$ shorter than those previously known, and show …
We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a semigroup identity to hold in the monoid of $n\times n$ upper triangular tropical matrices, in terms of equivalence of certain tropical polynomials. This leads to an algorithm for checking whether such an identity holds, in time polynomial in the length of the identity and size of the alphabet. It also allows us to answer a question of Izhakian and Margolis, by showing that the identities which hold in the monoid of $2\times 2$ upper triangular tropical matrices are exactly the same as those which hold in the bicyclic monoid. Our results e…
In 2010, Izhakian & Margolis proved that the bicyclic monoid admits a representation as a semigroup of upper triangular tropical matrices. We extend this result by classifying all one-relation monoids which admit such representations. We also classify, with two exceptions, all one-relation monoids which admit representations as semigroups of tropical matrices.
The main result of the paper proves that the monoid of all 2 x 2 tropical matrices satisfies a non-trivial semigroup identity, unlike the case of matrices over infinite fields. We exploit a strong connection between the monoid of all 2 x 2 tropical matrices and the bicyclic monoid to show that a variant of Adian's identity for the bicyclic monoid holds in our case.We use generic matrices of tropical polynomials to prove our result.
In this paper we give presentations for the monoid $\mathcal{DP}_n$ of all partial isometries on $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and for its submonoid $\mathcal{ODP}_n$ of all order-preserving partial isometries.
We exhibit a faithful representation of the plactic monoid of every finite rank as a monoid of upper triangular matrices over the tropical semiring. This answers a question first posed by Izhakian and subsequently studied by several authors. A consequence is a proof of a conjecture of Kubat and Okniński that every plactic monoid of finite rank satisfies a non-trivial semigroup identity. In the converse direction, we show that every identity satisfied by the plactic monoid of rank $n$ is satisfied by the monoid of $n \times n$ upper triangular tropical matrices. In particular this implies that …
A new tropical plactic algebra is introduced in which the Knuth relations are inferred from the underlying semiring arithmetics, encapsulating the ubiquitous plactic monoid $\mathcal{P}_n$. This algebra manifests a natural framework for accommodating representations of $\mathcal{P}_n$, or equivalently of Young tableaux, and its moderate coarsening -- the cloaktic monoid $\mathcal{K}_n$ and the co-cloaktic $ ^{\operatorname{co}}\mathcal{K}_n$. The faithful linear representations of $\mathcal{K}_n$ and $\, ^{\operatorname{co}} \mathcal{K}_n$ by tropical matrices, which constitute a tropical plac…
We exhibit a faithful representation of the stylic monoid of every finite rank as a monoid of upper unitriangular matrices over the tropical semiring. Thus, we show that the stylic monoid of finite rank $n$ generates the pseudovariety $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{J}}_n$, which corresponds to the class of all piecewise testable languages of height $n$, in the framework of Eilenberg's correspondence. From this, we obtain the equational theory of the stylic monoids of finite rank, show that they are finitely based if and only if $n \leq 3$, and that their identity checking problem is decidable in linear…
We develop a combinatorial approach to the study of semigroups and monoids with finite presentations satisfying small overlap conditions. In contrast to existing geometric methods, our approach facilitates a sequential left-right analysis of words which lends itself to the development of practical, efficient computational algorithms. In particular, we obtain a highly practical linear time solution to the word problem for monoids and semigroups with finite presentations satisfying the condition C(4), and a polynomial time solution to the uniform word problem for presentations satisfying the sam…
Wreath products involving symmetric inverse monoids/semigroups/categories arise in many areas of algebra and science, and presentations by generators and relations are crucial tools in such studies. The current paper finds such presentations for $M\wr\mathcal I_n$, $M\wr\operatorname{Sing}(\mathcal I_n)$ and $M\wr\mathcal I$. Here $M$ is an arbitrary monoid, $\mathcal I_n$ is the symmetric inverse monoid, $\operatorname{Sing}(\mathcal I_n)$ its singular ideal, and $\mathcal I$ is the symmetric inverse category.
We show that being finitely presentable and being finitely presentable with solvable word problem are quasi-isometry invariants of finitely generated left cancellative monoids. Our main tool is an elementary, but useful, geometric characterisation of finite presentability for left cancellative monoids. We also give examples to show that this characterisation does not extend to monoids in general, and indeed that properties such as solvable word problem are not isometry invariants for general monoids.
We obtain several presentations by generators and relations for the rook partition monoids and algebras, as well as their singular ideals. Among other results, we also calculate the minimal sizes of generating sets (some of our presentations use such minimal-size generating sets), and show that the singular part of the rook partition monoid is generated by its idempotents.
We study the generic properties of finitely presented monoids and semigroups. We show that for positive integers a > 1, k and m, the generic a-generator k-relation monoid and semigroup presentation (defined in any of several definite statistical senses) satisfy the small overlap condition C(m). It follows that the generic monoid is torsion-free and J-trivial and, by a recent result of the author, admits a linear time solution to its word problem and a regular language of unique normal forms for its elements. Moreover, the uniform word problem for finitely presented monoids is generically solva…
We prove the conjecture that, for any $n$, the monoid of all $n \times n$ tropical matrices satisfies nontrivial semigroup identities. To this end, we prove that the factor rank of a large enough power of a tropical matrix does not exceed the tropical rank of the original matrix.
The surface singular braid monoid corresponds to marked graph diagrams of knotted surfaces in braid form. In a quest to resolve linearity problem for this monoid, we will show that if it is defined on at least two or at least three strands, then its two or respectively three dimensional representations are not faithful. We will also derive new presentations for the surface singular braid monoid, one with reduced the number of defining relations, and the other with reduced the number of its singular generators. We include surface singular braid formulations of all knotted surfaces in Yoshikawa'…
In 2010, Everitt and Fountain introduced the concept of reflection monoids. The Boolean reflection monoids form a family of reflection monoids (symmetric inverse semigroups are Boolean reflection monoids of type $A$). In this paper, we give a family of presentations of Boolean reflection monoids and show how these presentations are compatible with quiver mutations of orientations of Dynkin diagrams with frozen vertices. Our results recover the presentations of Boolean reflection monoids given by Everitt and Fountain and the presentations of symmetric inverse semigroups given by Popova respecti…
This paper supplements [17], showing that categorically the layered theory is the same as the theory of ordered monoids (e.g. the max-plus algebra) used in tropical mathematics. A layered theory is developed in the context of categories, together with a "tropicalization functor" which permits us to pass from usual algebraic geometry to the tropical world. We consider tropical varieties from this categorical viewpoint, with emphasis on polynomial functions and their roots.
We study the free objects in the variety of semigroups and variety of monoids generated by the monoid of all $n \times n$ upper triangular matrices over a commutative semiring. We obtain explicit representations of these, as multiplicative subsemigroups of quiver algebras over polynomial semirings. In the $2 \times 2$ case this also yields a representation as a subsemigroup of a semidirect product of commutative monoids. In particular, from the case where $n=2$ and the semiring is the tropical semifield, we obtain a representation of the free objects in the monoid and semigroup varieties gener…
Tropical mathematics often is defined over an ordered cancellative monoid $\tM$, usually taken to be $(\RR, +)$ or $(\QQ, +)$. Although a rich theory has arisen from this viewpoint, cf. [L1], idempotent semirings possess a restricted algebraic structure theory, and also do not reflect certain valuation-theoretic properties, thereby forcing researchers to rely often on combinatoric techniques. In this paper we describe an alternative structure, more compatible with valuation theory, studied by the authors over the past few years, that permits fuller use of algebraic theory especially in underst…
For a monoid $M$ and a subsemigroup $S$ of the full transformation semigroup $T_n$, the wreath product $M\wr S$ is defined to be the semidirect product $M^n\rtimes S$, with the coordinatewise action of $S$ on $M^n$. The full wreath product $M\wr T_n$ is isomorphic to the endomorphism monoid of the free $M$-act on $n$ generators. Here, we are particularly interested in the case that $S=Sing_n$ is the singular part of $T_n$, consisting of all non-invertible transformations. Our main results are presentations for $M\wr Sing_n$ in terms of certain natural generating sets, and we prove these via ge…
We define a formal framework for the study of algebras of type Max-plus, Min-Plus, tropical algebras, and more generally algebras over a commutative idempotent semi-field. This work is motivated by the increasingly diversified use of these algebras which occur also in control theory, automata theory as well as in algebraic geometry, and in more specific ways in other parts of mathematics such as the theory of monoids. In this first article, we expecially re-examine linear algebra over idempotent semi-fields: the most delicate, but undoubtedly the most interesting point is the notion of a singu…
We prove that, for any $n$, the monoid of all $n \times n$ supertropical matrices extending tropical matrices satisfies nontrivial semigroup identities. These identities are carried over to walks on labeled-weighted digraphs with double arcs.
Let A be a finitely generated commutative algebra over a field K with a presentation A=K < X_{1}, ..., X_{n} | R >, where R is a set of monomial relations in the generators X_{1}, ..., X_{n}. So A = K[S], the semigroup algebra of the monoid S=< X_{1}, ..., X_{n} | R >. We characterize, purely in terms of the defining relations, when A is an integrally closed domain, provided R contains at most two relations. Also the class group of such algebras A is calculated.
