We study the generic properties of finitely presented monoids and semigroups. We show that for positive integers a > 1, k and m, the generic a-generator k-relation monoid and semigroup presentation (defined in any of several definite statistical senses) satisfy the small overlap condition C(m). It follows that the generic monoid is torsion-free and J-trivial and, by a recent result of the author, admits a linear time solution to its word problem and a regular language of unique normal forms for its elements. Moreover, the uniform word problem for finitely presented monoids is generically solvable in time linear in the word lengths and quadratic in the presentation size. We also prove some technical results about generic sets which may be of independent interest.
The partial automorphism monoid of an inverse semigroup is an inverse monoid consisting of all isomorphisms between its inverse subsemigroups. We prove that a tightly connected fundamental inverse semigroup $S$ with no isolated nontrivial subgroups is lattice determined "modulo semilattices" and if $T$ is an inverse semigroup whose partial automorphism monoid is isomorphic to that of $S$, then either $S$ and $T$ are isomorphic or they are dually isomorphic chains relative to the natural partial order; a similar result holds if $T$ is any semigroup and the inverse monoids consisting of all isom…
We show that the submonoid of all nxn triangular tropical matrices satisfies a nontrivial semigroup identity and provide a generic construction for classes of such identities. The utilization of the Fibonacci number formula gives us an upper bound on the length of these 2-variable semigroup identities.
We propose a way of associating to each finitely generated monoid or semigroup a formal language, called its loop problem. In the case of a group, the loop problem is essentially the same as the word problem in the sense of combinatorial group theory. Like the word problem for groups, the loop problem is regular if and only if the monoid is finite. We study also the case in which the loop problem is context-free, showing that a celebrated group-theoretic result of Muller and Schupp extends to describe completely simple semigroups with context-free loop problems. We consider also right cancella…
We study semigroup varieties generated by full and upper triangular tropical matrix semigroups and the plactic monoid of rank 4. We prove that the upper triangular tropical matrix semigroup $UT_n(\mathbb{T})$ generates a different semigroup variety for each dimension $n$. We show a weaker version of this fact for the full matrix semigroup: full tropical matrix semigroups of different prime dimensions generate different semigroup varieties. For the plactic monoid of rank 4, $\mathbb{P}_4$, we find a new set of identities satisfied by $\mathbb{P}_4$ shorter than those previously known, and show …
We study classes of proper restriction semigroups determined by properties of partial actions underlying them. These properties include strongness, antistrongness, being defined by a homomorphism, being an action etc. Of particular interest is the class determined by homomorphisms, primarily because we observe that its elements, while being close to semidirect products, serve as mediators between general restriction semigroups and semidirect products or $W$-products in an embedding-covering construction. It is remarkable that this class does not have an adequate analogue if specialized to inve…
In this paper, we characterize the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented full transformations of a finite chain, as well as the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented partial transformations and the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all oriented partial permutations of a finite chain. Characterizations of the monoids of endomorphisms of the subsemigroups of all orientation-preserving transformations of the three semigroups aforementioned are also given. In addition, we compute the number of endomorphisms of each of these six semigroups.
We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a semigroup identity to hold in the monoid of $n\times n$ upper triangular tropical matrices, in terms of equivalence of certain tropical polynomials. This leads to an algorithm for checking whether such an identity holds, in time polynomial in the length of the identity and size of the alphabet. It also allows us to answer a question of Izhakian and Margolis, by showing that the identities which hold in the monoid of $2\times 2$ upper triangular tropical matrices are exactly the same as those which hold in the bicyclic monoid. Our results e…
Each restriction semigroup is proved to be embeddable in a factorisable restriction monoid, or, equivalently, in an almost factorisable restriction semigroup. It is also established that each restriction semigroup has a proper cover which is embeddable in a semidirect product of a semilattice by a group.
Recent research of the author has given an explicit geometric description of free (two-sided) adequate semigroups and monoids, as sets of labelled directed trees under a natural combinatorial multiplication. In this paper we show that there are natural embeddings of each free right adequate and free left adequate semigroup or monoid into the corresponding free adequate semigroup or monoid. The corresponding classes of trees are easily described and the resulting geometric representation of free left adequate and free right adequate semigroups is even easier to understand than that in the two-s…
In this paper, we characterize the monoid of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all monotone full transformations of a finite chain, as well as the monoids of endomorphisms of the semigroup of all monotone partial transformations and of the semigroup of all monotone partial permutations of a finite chain.
A monoid $S$ is right coherent if every finitely generated subact of every finitely presented right $S$-act is finitely presented. The corresponding notion for a ring $R$ states that every finitely generated submodule of every finitely presented right $R$-module is finitely presented. For monoids (and rings) right coherency is a finitary property which determines the existence of a model companion of the class of right $S$-acts (right $R$-modules) and hence that the class of existentially closed right $S$-acts (right $R$-modules) is axiomatisable. Choo, Lam and Luft have shown that free rings …
This work presents an example of a finitely presented semigroup $S$ containing an infinite nonnilpotent nil ideal $LS$, whose elements do not have a square (i.e. any word of the type $LXYYZ$ equals zero.)
The main result of the paper proves that the monoid of all 2 x 2 tropical matrices satisfies a non-trivial semigroup identity, unlike the case of matrices over infinite fields. We exploit a strong connection between the monoid of all 2 x 2 tropical matrices and the bicyclic monoid to show that a variant of Adian's identity for the bicyclic monoid holds in our case.We use generic matrices of tropical polynomials to prove our result.

This article studies the properties of word-hyperbolic semigroups and monoids, i.e. those having context-free multiplication tables with respect to a regular combing, as defined by Duncan & Gilman. In particular, the preservation of word-hyperbolicity under taking free products is considered. Under mild conditions on the semigroups involved, satisfied e.g. by monoids or regular semigroups, we prove that the semigroup free product of two word-hyperbolic semigroups is again word-hyperbolic. Analogously, with a mild condition on the uniqueness of representation for the identity element, satisfied…
We provide an abstract categorical framework that relates the Cuntz semigroups of the C$^*$-algebras $A$ and $A\otimes \mathcal{K}$. This is done through a certain completion of ordered monoids by adding suprema of countable ascending sequences. Our construction is rather explicit and we show it is functorial and unique up to isomorphism. This approach is used in some applications to compute the stabilized Cuntz semigroup of certain C$^*$-algebras.
The left regular band structure on a hyperplane arrangement and its representation theory provide an important connection between semigroup theory and algebraic combinatorics. A finite semigroup embeds in a real hyperplane face monoid if and only if it is in the quasivariety generated by the monoid obtained by adjoining an identity to the two-element left zero semigroup. We prove that this quasivariety is on the one hand polynomial time decidable, and on the other minimally non-finitely based. A similar result is obtained for the semigroups embeddable in complex hyperplane semigroups.
We develop a combinatorial approach to the study of semigroups and monoids with finite presentations satisfying small overlap conditions. In contrast to existing geometric methods, our approach facilitates a sequential left-right analysis of words which lends itself to the development of practical, efficient computational algorithms. In particular, we obtain a highly practical linear time solution to the word problem for monoids and semigroups with finite presentations satisfying the condition C(4), and a polynomial time solution to the uniform word problem for presentations satisfying the sam…
A finitely generated group or monoid is said to be context-free if it has context-free word problem. In this note, we give an example of a context-free monoid, none of whose maximal subgroups are finitely generated. This answers a question of Brough, Cain & Pfeiffer on whether the group of units of a context-free monoid is always finitely generated, and highlights some of the contrasts between context-free monoids and context-free groups.
A monoid $S$ is said to be right coherent if every finitely generated subact of every finitely presented right $S$-act is finitely presented. Left coherency is defined dually and $S$ is coherent if it is both right and left coherent. These notions are analogous to those for a ring $R$ (where, of course, $S$-acts are replaced by $R$-modules). Choo, Lam and Luft have shown that free rings are coherent. In this note we prove that, correspondingly, any free monoid is coherent, thus answering a question posed by the first author in 1992.
We introduce a faithful tropical linear representation of the Chinese monoid, and thus prove that this monoid admits all the semigroup identities satisfied by tropical triangular matrices.
The class of finitely presented algebras over a field K with a set of generators a_1,...,a_n and defined by homogeneous relations of the form a_1a_2...a_n = a_{sigma(1)}a_{sigma(2)}...a_{sigma(n)}, where sigma runs through an abelian subgroup H of Sym_{n}, the symmetric group, is considered. It is proved that the Jacobson radical of such algebras is zero. Also, it is characterized when the monoid S_n(H), with the "same" presentation as the algebra, is cancellative in terms of the stabilizer of 1 and the stabilizer of n in H. This work is a continuation of earlier work of Cedo, Jespers and Okni…
We show that for any monoid M, the family of languages accepted by M-automata (or equivalently, generated by regular valence grammars over M) is completely determined by that part of M which lies outside the maximal ideal. Hence, every such family arises as the family of languages accepted by N-automata where N is a simple or 0-simple monoid. A consequence is that every such family is either the class of regular languages, contains all the blind one-counter languages, or is the family of languages accepted by G-automata for G a non-locally-finite torsion group. We consider a natural extension …
The rank of a semigroup is the cardinality of a smallest generating set. In this paper we compute the rank of the endomorphism monoid of a non-trivial uniform partition of a finite set, that is, the semigroup of those transformations of a finite set that leave a non-trivial uniform partition invariant. That involves proving that the rank of a wreath product of two symmetric groups is two and then use the fact that the endomorphism monoid of a partition is isomorphic to a wreath product of two full transformation semigroups. The calculation of the rank of these semigroups solves an open questio…
A new tropical plactic algebra is introduced in which the Knuth relations are inferred from the underlying semiring arithmetics, encapsulating the ubiquitous plactic monoid $\mathcal{P}_n$. This algebra manifests a natural framework for accommodating representations of $\mathcal{P}_n$, or equivalently of Young tableaux, and its moderate coarsening -- the cloaktic monoid $\mathcal{K}_n$ and the co-cloaktic $ ^{\operatorname{co}}\mathcal{K}_n$. The faithful linear representations of $\mathcal{K}_n$ and $\, ^{\operatorname{co}} \mathcal{K}_n$ by tropical matrices, which constitute a tropical plac…
This paper continues the study of Fourier transforms on finite inverse semigroups, with a focus on Fourier inversion theorems and FFTs for new classes of inverse semigroups. We begin by introducing four inverse semigroup generalizations of the Fourier inversion theorem for finite groups. Next, we describe a general approach to the construction of fast inverse Fourier transforms for finite inverse semigroups complementary to an approach to FFTs given in previous work. Finally, we give fast inverse Fourier transforms for the symmetric inverse monoid and its wreath product by arbitrary finite gro…
In 2010, Izhakian & Margolis proved that the bicyclic monoid admits a representation as a semigroup of upper triangular tropical matrices. We extend this result by classifying all one-relation monoids which admit such representations. We also classify, with two exceptions, all one-relation monoids which admit representations as semigroups of tropical matrices.
Graph monoids arise naturally in the study of non-stable K-theory of graph C*-algebras and Leavitt path algebras. They play also an important role in the current approaches to the realization problem for von Neumann regular rings. In this paper, we characterize when a finitely generated conical refinement monoid can be represented as a graph monoid. The characterization is expressed in terms of the behavior of the structural maps of the associated $I$-system at the free primes of the monoid.
We show that every finitely generated conical refinement monoid can be represented as the monoid $\mathcal V(R)$ of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over a von Neumann regular ring $R$. To this end, we use the representation of these monoids provided by adaptable separated graphs. Given an adaptable separated graph $(E, C)$ and a field $K$, we build a von Neumann regular $K$-algebra $Q_K (E, C)$ and show that there is a natural isomorphism between the separated graph monoid $M(E, C)$ and the monoid $\mathcal V(Q_K (E, C))$.
We show that being finitely presentable and being finitely presentable with solvable word problem are quasi-isometry invariants of finitely generated left cancellative monoids. Our main tool is an elementary, but useful, geometric characterisation of finite presentability for left cancellative monoids. We also give examples to show that this characterisation does not extend to monoids in general, and indeed that properties such as solvable word problem are not isometry invariants for general monoids.
If a finitely generated monoid M is defined by a finite number of degree-preserving relations, then it has linear growth if and only if it can be decomposed into a finite disjoint union of subsets (which we call "sandwiches") of the form $a<w>b$, where $a,b,w$ are elements of $M$ and $<w>$ denotes the monogenic semigroup generated by $w$. Moreover, the decomposition can be chosen in such a way that the sandwiches are either singletons or "free" ones (meaning that all elements $a w^n b$ in each sandwich are pairwise different). So, the minimal number of free sandwiches in such a decomposition i…
The complex algebra of an inverse semigroup with finitely many idempotents in each $\mathcal D$-class is stably finite by a result of Munn. This can be proved fairly easily using $C^*$-algebras for inverse semigroups satisfying this condition that have a Hausdorff universal groupoid, or more generally for direct limits of inverse semigroups satisfying this condition and having Hausdorff universal groupoids. It is not difficult to see that a finitely presented inverse semigroup with a non-Hausdorff universal groupoid cannot be a direct limit of inverse semigroups with Hausdorff universal groupo…
This article examines the three-way relationship between right coherency of a monoid $S$, solutions of equations over $S$-acts, and injectivity properties of $S$-acts. A monoid $S$ is right coherent if every finitely generated subact of every finitely presented (right) $S$-act itself has a finite presentation. Purity properties of an $S$-act $A$ may either be expressed in terms of solutions in $A$ of certain consistent sets of equations over $A$, or in terms of injectivity properties. For example, an $S$-act $A$ is absolutely pure (almost pure) if every finite consistent set of equations over …
For a monoid $M$, we denote by $\mathbb G(M)$ the group of units, $\mathbb E(M)$ the submonoid generated by the idempotents, and $\mathbb G_L(M)$ and $\mathbb G_R(M)$ the submonoids consisting of all left or right units. Writing $\mathcal M$ for the (monoidal) category of monoids, $\mathbb G$, $\mathbb E$, $\mathbb G_L$ and $\mathbb G_R$ are all (monoidal) functors $\mathcal M\to\mathcal M$. There are other natural functors associated to submonoids generated by combinations of idempotents and one- or two-sided units. The above functors generate a monoid with composition as its operation. We sh…
In 2010, Everitt and Fountain introduced the concept of reflection monoids. The Boolean reflection monoids form a family of reflection monoids (symmetric inverse semigroups are Boolean reflection monoids of type $A$). In this paper, we give a family of presentations of Boolean reflection monoids and show how these presentations are compatible with quiver mutations of orientations of Dynkin diagrams with frozen vertices. Our results recover the presentations of Boolean reflection monoids given by Everitt and Fountain and the presentations of symmetric inverse semigroups given by Popova respecti…
We study maximal subsemigroups of the monoid T(X) of all full transformations on the set X=N of natural numbers containing a given subsemigroup W of T(X) where each element of a given set $U$ is a generator of T(X) modulo W. This note continue the study of maximal subsemigroups on the monoid of all full transformations on a infinite set.
We systematically investigate, for a monoid $M$, how topos-theoretic properties of $\mathbf{PSh}(M)$, including the properties of being atomic, strongly compact, local, totally connected or cohesive, correspond to semigroup-theoretic properties of $M$.
A variant of a semigroup $S$ with respect to an element $a\in S$ is the semigroup $S^{a}=(S,\star_{a})$, where $x\star_{a}y=xay$ for any $x,y\in S$. Here, $a$ is the sandwich element of $S^{a}$. In this article, we study variants of the partial Brauer monoid $\mathcal{PB}_{n}$ for $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We give the classification of these variants in the case when the rank of the sandwich element is nonzero.
