The plasma exit flow speed at the sheath entrance is constrained by the Bohm criterion. The so-called Bohm speed regulates the plasma particle and power exhaust fluxes to the wall, and it is commonly deployed as a boundary condition to exclude the sheath region in quasi-neutral plasma modeling. Here the Bohm criterion analysis is performed in the intermediate plasma regime away from the previously known limiting cases of adiabatic laws and the asymptotic limit of infinitesimal Debye length in a finite-size system, using the transport equations of an anisotropic plasma. The resulting Bohm speed has explicit dependence on local plasma heat flux, temperature isotropization, and thermal force. Comparison with kinetic simulations demonstrates its accuracy over the plasma-sheath transition region in which quasineutrality is weakly perturbed and Bohm criterion applies.
Most plasmas have a very thin sheath compared with the plasma dimension. This necessitates separate calculations of the plasma and sheath. The Bohm criterion provides the boundary condition for calculation of plasma profiles. To calculate sheath properties a value of electric field at the plasma-sheath interface has to be specified in addition to the Bohm criterion. The value of the boundary electric field and robust procedure to approximately patch plasma and collisionless sheath with a very good accuracy are reported.
A two-dimensional dust crystal levitated in the sheath of a modified Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference cell is manipulated by heating or cooling the lower electrode. The dust charge is obtained by measuring global characteristics of the levitated crystal obtained from top-view pictures. From the force balance, the electric field in the sheath is reconstructed. From the Bohm criterion, we conclude that the dust crystal is levitated mainly above and just below the classical Bohm point.
The generalized Bohm criterion is revisited in the context of incorporating kinetic effects of the electron and ion distribution functions into the theory. The underlying assumptions and results of two different approaches are compared: The conventional `kinetic Bohm criterion' and a fluid-moment hierarchy approach. The former is based on the asymptotic limit of an infinitely thin sheath ($λ_D/l =0$), whereas the latter is based on a perturbative expansion of a sheath that is thin compared to the plasma ($λ_D/l \ll 1$). Here $λ_D$ is the Debye length, which characterizes the sheath length scal…
The electron sheath is a particular electron-rich sheath with negative net charges where plasma potential is lower than the biased electrode. Here an improved understanding of electron sheath theory is provided using both fluid and kinetic approaches while elaborating on its implications for plasma-surface interaction. A fluid model is first proposed considering the electron presheath structure, avoiding the singularity in electron sheath Child-Langmuir law. The latter is proved to underestimate the sheath potential. Subsequently, the kinetic model of electron sheath is established, showing co…
By combining the results from a self-consistent 2D dusty plasma fluid model and a 3D N-body code, the equilibrium position and crystal structure were determined for dust particles levitated in the sheath in a modified Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference cell, in which the lower electrode was heated or cooled. The Debye length, charge and electric field were reconstructed on a sub-millimeter scale by applying a previously developed, independent method. However, this method seems to overestimate the charge, and hence underestimate the electric field. Even corrected for this fact, the …
Electron emission from the boundary is ubiquitous in capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) and precipitates nonnegligible influences on the discharge properties. Here we present the PIC-MCC simulation of an Ohmic-dominant heating mode of capacitively coupled plasma where the stochastic heating vanishes and only Ohmic heating sustains the discharge, due to sheath inversion by boundary electron emission. The inverted CCP features negative sheath potential without Bohm presheath, hence excluding plasma heating due to sheath edge oscillation. The particle and energy transport of the proposed heating m…
A careful study of plasma-material interactions is essential to understand and improve the operation of devices where plasma contacts a wall. Key contributions of this work include (i) novel continuum kinetic algorithms with novel boundary conditions that directly discretize the Vlasov/Boltzmann equation using the discontinuous Galerkin method, (ii) fundamental studies of a plasma sheath physics with collisions, ionization, and physics-based wall emission, and (iii) theoretical and numerical studies of the linear growth and nonlinear saturation of the kinetic Weibel instability, including its …
A kinetic theory of the Bohm criterion is developed that is based on positive-exponent velocity moments of the plasma kinetic equation. This result is contrasted with the conventional kinetic Bohm criterion that is based on a v^{-1} moment of the Vlasov equation. The salient difference between the two results is that low velocity particles dominate in the conventional theory, but are essentially unimportant in the new theory. It is shown that the derivation of the conventional kinetic Bohm criterion is flawed. Low velocity particles can cause unphysical divergences in the conventional theory. …
A two-dimensional dust crystal levitated in the sheath of a modified Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference cell is manipulated by heating or cooling the lower electrode. The dust charge is obtained from top-view pictures of the crystal using a previously developed analytical model. By assuming a simple force balance, and measuring the radial confining force, the vertical electric field profile in the sheath is reconstructed. The dust crystal is shown to levitate on the plasma side of the Bohm point. Finally, it is shown that the ion drag plays an important role in the vertical force b…
A long-standing debate in the literature about the kinetic form of the Bohm criterion is resolved for plasmas with single positive ion species when transport is dominated by charge exchange collisions. The solution of the Boltzmann equation for the ions gives the exact form free of any divergence and contains an additional term that is not included in the classical result. This term includes collisional and geometric effects and leads to a noticeable correction. Further, the question is addressed whether the space charge argument at the bottom of the Bohm criterion can actually lead to a meani…
The Debye shielding of a charge immersed in a flowing plasma is an old classic problem in plasma physics. It has been given renewed attention in the last two decades in view of experiments with complex plasmas, where charged dust particles are often levitated in a region with strong ion flow. Efforts to describe the shielding of the dust particles in such conditions have been focused on the homogeneous plasma approximation, which ignores the substantial inhomogeneity of the levitation region. We address the role of the plasma inhomogeneity by rigorously calculating the point charge potential i…
We analyze, in both plane and cylindrical geometries, a collisionless plasma consisting of an inner region where generation occurs by UV illumination, and an un-illuminated outer region with no generation. Ions generated in the inner region flow outwards through the outer region and into a wall. We solve for this system's steady state, first in the quasi-neutral regime (where the Debye length $λ_D$ vanishes and analytic solutions exist) and then in the general case, which we solve numerically. In the general case a double layer forms where the illuminated and un-illuminated regions meet, and a…
The results of an analysis of the physics of levitation of negatively charged dust particles over a surface (wall) in an inverse sheath are reported. It is shown that under suitable parameter regime, the ion-drag force may balance the combined electrostatic and gravitational force on the dust particles owing to its hollow profile as one moves away from the surface. Our analysis shows that the parameter regimes in which such a situation may result is realizable in laboratory and space plasma environments, particularly the near-surface dayside lunar plasma. The lunar surface and dust grains are …
