Electrostatic gating confines and controls the transport of electrons in integrated circuits. Magnons, the quanta of spin waves of the magnetic order, are promising alternative information carriers, but difficult to gate. Here we report that superconducting strips on top of thin magnetic films can totally reflect magnons by its diamagnetic response to the magnon stray fields. The induced large frequency shifts unidirectionally blocks the magnons propagating normal to the magnetization. Two superconducting gates parallel to the magnetization create a magnonic cavity. The option to gate coherent magnons adds functionalities to magnonic devices, such as reprogrammable logical devices and increased couplings to other degrees of freedom.
We observe a strong thermally-controlled magnon-mediated interlayer coupling of two ferromagnetic layers via an antiferromagnetic spacer in spin-valve type trilayers. The effect manifests itself as a field-induced coherent switching of the two ferromagnets, which can be controlled by varying temperature and the spacer thickness. We explain the observed behavior as due to a strong hybridization of the ferro- and antiferro-magnetic magnon modes in the trilayer at temperatures just below the Néel temperature of the antiferromagnetic spacer.
Gate-tunable spin-dependent properties could be induced in graphene at room temperature through magnetic proximity effect by placing it in contact with a metallic ferromagnet. Because strong chemical bonding with the metallic substrate makes gating ineffective, an intervening passivation layer is needed. Previously considered passivation layers result in a large shift of the Dirac point away from the Fermi level, so that unrealistically large gate fields are required to tune the spin polarization in graphene. We show that a monolayer of Au or Pt used as the passivation layer between Co and gra…
We demonstrate a modulation of up to 18% in the magnon spin transport in a magnetic insulator (Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$, YIG) using a common ferromagnetic metal (permalloy, Py) as a magnetic control gate. A Py electrode, placed between two Pt injector and detector electrodes, acts as a magnetic gate in our prototypical magnon transistor device. By manipulating the magnetization direction of Py with respect to that of YIG, the transmission of magnons through the Py|YIG interface can be controlled, resulting in a modulation of the non-equilibrium magnon density in the YIG channel between the Pt i…
Spin and photonic systems are at the heart of modern information devices and emerging quantum technologies. An interplay between electron-hole pairs (excitons) in semiconductors and collective spin excitations (magnons) in magnetic crystals would bridge these heterogeneous systems, leveraging their individual assets in novel interconnected devices. Here, we report the magnon-exciton coupling at the interface between a magnetic thin film and an atomically-thin semiconductor. Our approach allies the long-lived magnons hosted in a film of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) to strongly-bound excitons in a …
Strongly-interacting nanomagnetic systems are pivotal across next-generation technologies including reconfigurable magnonics and neuromorphic computation. Controlling magnetisation state and local coupling between neighbouring nanoelements allows vast reconfigurable functionality and a host of associated functionalities. However, existing designs typically suffer from an inability to tailor inter-element coupling post-fabrication and nanoelements restricted to a pair of Ising-like magnetisation states. Here, we propose a new class of reconfigurable magnonic crystal incorporating nanodisks as t…
The Doppler shift of the quasiparticle dispersion by charge currents is responsible for the critical supercurrents in superconductors and instabilities of the magnetic ground state of metallic ferromagnets. Here we predict an analogous effect in thin films of magnetic insulators in which microwaves emitted by a proximity stripline generate coherent chiral spin currents that cause a Doppler shift in the magnon dispersion. The spin-wave instability is suppressed by magnon-magnon interactions that limit spin currents to values close to but below the threshold for the instability. The spin current…
Strongly-interacting nanomagnetic arrays are crucial across an ever-growing suite of technologies. Spanning neuromorphic computing, control over superconducting vortices and reconfigurable magnonics, the utility and appeal of these arrays lies in their vast range of distinct, stable magnetisation states. Different states exhibit different functional behaviours, making precise, reconfigurable state control an essential cornerstone of such systems. However, few existing methodologies may reverse an arbitrary array element, and even fewer may do so under electrical control, vital for device integ…
We investigate the twist-angle and gate dependence of the proximity-induced exchange coupling in the monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ due to the vdW coupling to the ferromagnetic semiconductor CrI$_3$, from first-principles calculations. A model Hamiltonian, that captures the relevant band edges at the $K/K^{\prime}$ valleys of the proximitized TMDCs, is employed to quantify the proximity-induced exchange. Upon twisting from 0° to 30°, we find a transition of the TMDC valence band (VB) edge exchange splitting from about $-2$ to $2$ meV, while the conducti…
We propose a class of models for a magnonic analog of topological insulators in three dimensions. The models have pseudo-time-reversal symmetry which ensures the existence of bosonic Kramers pairs. We define a set of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariants that characterizes different topological phases and determines the presence or absence of surface Dirac cones. This is demonstrated by considering a bosonic counterpart of the Fu-Kane-Mele model on a diamond lattice. The model is found to exhibit three distinct phases analogous to strong topological, weak topological, and trivial insulator pha…
Recent work on layered structures of superconductors (S) or normal metals (N) in contact with ferromagnetic insulators (FI) has shown how the properties of the previous can be strongly affected by the magnetic proximity effect due to the static FI magnetization. Here we show that such structures can also exhibit a new electron thermalization mechanism due to the coupling of electrons with the dynamic magnetization, i.e., magnons in FI. We here study the heat flow between the two systems and find that in thin films the heat conductance due to the interfacial electron-magnon collisions can domin…
Electrostatic gating provides a way to obtain key functionalities in modern electronic devices and to qualitatively alter materials properties. While electrostatic description of such gating gives guidance for related doping effects, inherent quantum properties of gating provide opportunities for intriguing modification of materials and unexplored devices. Using first-principles calculations for Co/bilayer graphene, Co/BN, and Co/benzene, as well as a simple physical model, we show that magnetic heterostructures with two-dimensional layered materials can manifest tunable magnetic proximity eff…
We investigate the performance of gate-defined devices fabricated on high mobility InAs metamorphic heterostructures. We find that heterostructures capped with In$_{0.75}$Ga$_{0.25}$As often show signs of parallel conduction due to proximity of their surface Fermi level to the conduction band minimum. Here, we introduce a technique that can be used to estimate the density of this surface charge that involves cool-downs from room temperature under gate bias. We have been able to remove the parallel conduction under high positive bias, but achieving full depletion has proven difficult. We find t…

Proximity effects in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures offer controllable ways to tailor the electronic band structure of adjacent materials. Exchange proximity in particular is important for making materials magnetic without hosting magnetic ions. Such synthetic magnets could be used for studying magnetotransport in high-mobility 2D materials, or magneto-optics in highly absorptive nominally nonmagnetic semiconductors. Using first-principles calculations, we show that the proximity exchange in monolayer MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ due to ferromagnetic monolayer CrI$_3$ can be tuned…
We report on first-principle calculations on magnetic proximity effect in a van der Waals heterostructure formed by a graphene monolayer induced by its interaction with a two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnet (chromium tribromide, CrBr3). We observe that the magnetic proximity effect arising from the spin-dependent interlayer coupling depends sensitively on the interlayer electronic configuration. The proximity effect results in spin polarization of graphene orbital by up to 63.6 %, together with a miniband splitting band gap of about 73.4 meV and 8% enhancement in magnetic moment (3.47$μ$B/cell) i…
The evolution of information technology has been driven by the discovery of new forms of large magnetoresistance (MR), such as giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) in magnetic multilayers. Recently, new types of MR have been observed in much simpler bilayers consisting of ferromagnetic (FM)/nonmagnetic (NM) thin films; however, the magnitude of MR in these materials is very small (0.01 ~ 1%). Here, we demonstrate that NM/FM bilayers consisting of a NM InAs quantum well conductive channel and an insulating FM (Ga,Fe)Sb layer exhibit giant proximity magnetoresista…
We report on first-principles calculations of spin-dependent properties in graphene induced by its interaction with a nearby magnetic insulator (Europium oxide, EuO). The magnetic proximity effect results in spin polarization of graphene $π$ orbitals by up to 24 %, together with large exchange splitting bandgap of about 36 meV. The position of the Dirac cone is further shown to depend strongly on the graphene-EuO interlayer. These findings point towards the possible engineering of spin gating by proximity effect at relatively high temperature, which stands as a hallmark for future all-spin inf…
The extreme versatility of two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials derives from their ability to exhibit new electronic properties when assembled in proximity with dissimilar crystals. For example, although graphene is inherently non-magnetic, recent work has reported a magnetic proximity effect in graphene interfaced with magnetic substrates, potentially enabling a pathway towards achieving a high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here, we investigate heterostructures of graphene and chromium trihalide magnetic insulators (CrI$_3$, CrBr$_3$, and CrCl$_3$). Surprisingly, we are …
Ionic gating is a very popular tool to investigate and control the electric charge transport and electronic ground state in a wide variety of different materials. This is due to its capability to induce large modulations of the surface charge density by means of the electric-double-layer field-effect transistor (EDL-FET) architecture, and has been proven to be capable of tuning even the properties of metallic systems. In this short review, I summarize the main results which have been achieved so far in controlling the superconducting (SC) properties of thin films of conventional metallic super…
We study the effective interactions between Dirac fermions on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator due to the proximity coupling to the magnetic fluctuations in a ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic insulator. Our results show that the magnetic fluctuations can mediate attractive interactions between Dirac fermions of both Amperean and BCS type. In the ferromagnetic case, we find pairing between fermions with parallel momenta, so-called Amperean pairing, whenever the effective Lagrangian for the magnetic fluctuations does not contain a quadratic term. The pairing interaction…
We report a systematic first-principles investigation of the influence of different magnetic insulators on the magnetic proximity effect induced in graphene. Four different magnetic insulators are considered: two ferromagnetic europium chalcogenides namely EuO and EuS and two ferrimagnetic insulators yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and cobalt ferrite (CFO). The obtained exchange-splitting varies from tens to hundreds of meV. We also find an electron doping induced by YIG and europium chalcogenides substrates, that shift the Fermi level up to 0.78 eV and 1.3 eV respectively, whereas hole doping up to…
According to Onsager's principle, electrical resistance $R$ of general conductors behaves as an even function of external magnetic field $B$. Only in special circumstances, which involve time reversal symmetry (TRS) broken by ferromagnetism, the odd component of $R$ against $B$ is observed. This unusual phenomenon, called odd-parity magnetoresistance (OMR), was hitherto subtle (< 2%) and hard to control by external means. Here, we report a giant OMR as large as 27% in edge transport channels of an InAs quantum well, which is magnetized by a proximity effect from an underlying ferromagnetic sem…
Graphene is an attractive electrode material to contact nanostructures down to the molecular scale since it can be gated electrostatically. Gating can be used to control the doping and the energy level alignment in the nanojunction, thereby influencing its conductance. Here we investigate the impact of electrostatic gating in nanojunctions between graphene electrodes operating at finite bias. Using first principles quantum transport simulations, we show that the voltage drop across \emph{symmetric} junctions changes dramatically and controllably in gated systems compared to non-gated junctions…
Superconductivity can be induced in a normal material via the leakage of superconducting pairs of charge carriers from an adjacent superconductor. This so-called proximity effect is markedly influenced by graphene unique electronic structure, both in fundamental and technologically relevant ways. These include an unconventional form of the leakage mechanism the Andreev reflection and the potential of supercurrent modulation through electrical gating. Despite the interest of high-temperature superconductors in that context, realizations have been exclusively based on low-temperature ones. Here …

The search of novel topological phases, such as the quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) or the axion insulator, has motivated different schemes to introduce magnetism into topological insulators. One scheme is to introduce ferromagnetic dopants in topological insulators. However, it is generally challenging and requires carefully engineered growth/heterostructures or relatively low temperatures to observe the QAHI due to issues such as the added disorder with ferromagnetic dopants. Another promising scheme is using the magnetic proximity effect with a magnetic insulator to magnetize the to…
Motivated by recent experiments, we investigate the nonreciprocal magnetoelastic interaction between the surface acoustic phonons of dielectric non-magnetic substrates and magnons of proximity nanomagnets. The magnetization dynamics exerts rotating forces at the edges of the nanomagnet that causes the nonreciprocal interaction with surface phonons due to its rotation-momentum locking. This coupling induces the nonreciprocity of the surface phonon transmission and a nearly complete phonon diode effect by several (tens of) magnetic nanowires of high (ordinary) magnetic quality. Phase-sensitive m…
The magnetic damping constant is a critical parameter for magnetization dynamics and the efficiency of memory devices and magnon transport. Therefore, its manipulation by electric fields is crucial in spintronics. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the voltage-control of magnetic damping in ferro- and ferrimagnetic-insulator (FI)/topological-insulator (TI) bilayers. Assuming a capacitor-like setup, we formulate an effective dissipation torque induced by spin-charge pumping at the FI/TI interface as a function of an applied voltage. By using realistic material parameters, we find that the effec…
Many proposals in exploring topological quantum computation are based on superconducting quantum devices constructed on materials with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). For these devices, a full control on both the magnitude and the spatial distribution of the supercurrent would be highly demanded, but has been elusive up to now. We constructed proximity-type Josephson junction on nanoplates of Bi2O2Se, a new emerging semiconductor with strong SOC. Through electrical gating, we show that the supercurrent can be fully turned ON and OFF, and its real-space pathways can be configured either throu…
Over the past fifteen years, tremendous efforts have been devoted to realizing topological superconductivity in realistic materials and systems, predominately propelled by their promising application potentials in fault-tolerant quantum information processing. In this article, we attempt to give an overview on some of the main developments in this field, focusing in particular on two-dimensional crystalline superconductors that possess either intrinsic p-wave pairing or nontrivial band topology. We first classify the three different conceptual schemes to achieve topological superconductor (TSC…
A Metal-dielectric-topological insulator capacitor device based on hBN-encapsulated CVD grown Bi2Se3 is realized and investigated in the radio frequency regime. The RF quantum capacitance and device resistance are extracted for frequencies as a high as 10 GHz, and studied as a function of the applied gate voltage. The combination of the superior quality hBN dielectric gate with the optimized transport characteristics of CVD grown Bi2Se3 (n~10^18cm-3 in 8 nm) allow us to attain a bulk depleted regime by dielectric gating. A quantum capacitance minimum is observed revealing a purely Dirac regime…
Signatures of Majorana zero modes (MZMs), which are the building blocks for fault-tolerant topological quantum computing, have been observed in semiconductor nanowires (NW) with strong spin-orbital-interaction (SOI), such as InSb and InAs NWs with proximity-induced superconductivity. Realizing topological superconductivity and MZMs in this most widely-studied platform also requires eliminating spin degeneracy, which is realized by applying a magnetic field to induce a helical gap. However, the applied field can adversely impact the induced superconducting state in the NWs and also places geome…
We demonstrate an Al superconducting quantum interference device in which the Josephson junctions are implemented through gate-controlled proximitized Cu mesoscopic weak-links. The latter behave analogously to genuine superconducting metals in terms of the response to electrostatic gating, and provide a good performance in terms of current-modulation visibility. We show that, through the application of a static gate voltage, we are able to modify the interferometer current-flux relation in a fashion which seems compatible with the introduction of $π$-channels within the gated weak-link. Our re…
Despite metals are believed to be insensitive to field-effect and conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theories predict the electric field to be ineffective on conventional superconductors, a number of gating experiments showed the possibility of modulating the conductivity of metallic thin films and the critical temperature of conventional superconductors. All these experimental features have been explained by simple charge accumulation/depletion. In 2018, electric field control of supercurrent in conventional metallic superconductors has been demonstrated in a range of electric field…
