Motivated by recent experiments, we investigate the nonreciprocal magnetoelastic interaction between the surface acoustic phonons of dielectric non-magnetic substrates and magnons of proximity nanomagnets. The magnetization dynamics exerts rotating forces at the edges of the nanomagnet that causes the nonreciprocal interaction with surface phonons due to its rotation-momentum locking. This coupling induces the nonreciprocity of the surface phonon transmission and a nearly complete phonon diode effect by several (tens of) magnetic nanowires of high (ordinary) magnetic quality. Phase-sensitive microwave transmission is also nonreciprocal that can pick up clear signals of the coherent phonons excited by magnetization dynamics. Nonreciprocal pumping of phonons by precessing magnetization is predicted using Landauer-Büttiker formalism.
One of the most fundamental forms of magnon-phonon interaction is an intrinsic property of magnetic materials, the "magnetoelastic coupling". This particular form of interaction has been the basis for describing magnetic materials and their strain related applications, where strain induces changes of internal magnetic fields. Different from the magnetoelastic coupling, more than 40 years ago, it was proposed that surface acoustic waves may induce surface magnons via rotational motion of the lattice in anisotropic magnets. However, a signature of this magnon-phonon coupling mechanism, termed ma…
We investigate the transfer and control of nonreciprocity through magnons themselves in permalloy thin films deposited on surface oxide silicon substrate. Evidences of nonreciprocal emergence of hybridized dipole exchange magnons (spin waves) at two permalloy surfaces are provided by studying magnon transmission and asymmetry, via Brillouin light scattering measurements. The dipole dominated spin wave and exchange dominated spin wave are found to be localized near the top and bottom surfaces, respectively, and traveling along opposite directions. The nonreciprocity and the localization are int…
Recent experiments have elucidated that novel nonequilibrium states inherent in the so-called hydrodynamic regime are realized in ultrapure metals with sufficiently strong momentum-conserving scattering. In this letter, we formulate a theory of electron hydrodynamics with broken inversion symmetry under magnetic fields and find that novel terms emerge in hydrodynamic equations which play a crucial role for the realization of the nonreciprocal responses. Specifically, we clarify that there exist a novel type of nonreciprocal collective modes dubbed nonreciprocal surface magnetoplasmons arising …
The equality between the spectral, directional emittance and absorptance of an object under local thermal equilibrium is known as Kirchhoff's law of radiation. The breakdown of Kirchhoff's law of radiation is physically allowed by breaking time reversal symmetry and can open opportunities for nonreciprocal light emitters and absorbers. Large anomalous Hall conductivity and angle recently observed in topological Weyl semimetals, particularly type-I magnetic Weyl semimetals and type-II Weyl semimetals, are expected to create large nonreciprocal electromagnetic wave propagation. In this work, we …
In this Rapid Communication, we theoretically demonstrate that near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) can be modulated and enhanced by a new energy transmission mode of evanescent wave, i.e. the nonreciprocal surface plasmons polaritons (NSPPs). In addition to the well-known coupled surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), applying a drift current on a graphene sheet leads to an extremely asymmetric photonic transmission model, which has never been noted in the noncontact heat exchanges at nanoscale before. The coupling of plasmons in the infrared bands dominates the NFRHT, associated with low l…
We study the interaction of Rayleigh and shear horizontal surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with spin waves in thin Ni films on a piezoelectric LiTaO$_3$ substrate, which supports both SAW modes simultaneously. Because Rayleigh and shear horizontal modes induce different strain components in the Ni thin films, the symmetries of the magnetoelastic driving fields, of the magnetoelastic response, and of the transmission nonreciprocity differ for both SAW modes. Our experimental findings are well explained by a theoretical model based on a modified Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert approach. We show that the …
We investigate lateral recoil forces exerted on nanoparticles located near plasmonic platforms with in-plane nonreciprocal response. To this purpose, we first develop a comprehensive theoretical framework based on the Lorentz force within the Rayleigh approximation combined with nonreciprocal Green's functions and then derive approximate analytical expressions to model lateral recoil forces, demonstrating their explicit dependence on the dispersion relation of the system and unveiling the mechanisms that govern them. In particular, a dominant lateral recoil force component appears due to the m…
MnBi2Te4 (MBT) is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator with the interaction of spin-momentum locked surface electrons and intrinsic magnetism, and it exhibits novel magnetic and topological phenomena. Recent studies suggested that the interaction of electrons and magnetism can be affected by the Mn-doped Bi2Te3 phase at the surface due to inevitable structural defects. Here we report an observation of nonreciprocal transport, i.e. current-direction-dependent resistance, in a bilayer composed of antiferromagnetic MBT and nonmagnetic Pt. The emergence of the nonreciprocal response …
We investigate spontaneous entanglement of two qubits mediated by nonreciprocal surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a Weyl semimetal. In the absence of external magnetic fields, the topology of the Weyl semimetal even gives rise to nonreciprocal SPPs that are topologically protected and reside inside the photonic gap. We utilize this nonreciprocal SPP as a mediator of entanglement of two spatially-separated qubits. Our two main findings are: (1) the nonreciprocal SPP gives better quantum entanglement than the reciprocal one, and (2) the achieved entanglement is sufficiently long-lived compare…
We show that an isotropic dipolar particle in the vicinity of a substrate made of nonreciprocal plasmonic materials can experience a lateral Casimir force and torque when the particle's temperature differs from that of the slab and the environment. We connect the existence of the lateral force to the asymmetric dispersion of nonreciprocal surface polaritons and the existence of the lateral torque to the spin-momentum locking of such surface waves. Using the formalism of fluctuational electrodynamics, we show that the features of lateral force and torque should be experimentally observable usin…
We study the interaction of surface acoustic waves with spin waves in ultra-thin CoFeB/Pt bilayers. Due to the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), the spin wave dispersion is non-degenerate for oppositely propagating spin waves in CoFeB/Pt. In combination with the additional nonreciprocity of the magnetoacoustic coupling itself, highly nonreciprocal acoustic wave transmission through the magnetic film is observed. We systematically characterize the magnetoacoustic wave propagation in a thickness series of CoFeB($d$)/Pt samples as a function of magnetic field magnitude and dire…
The interaction between surface acoustic waves (SAWs) and spin waves (SWs) in a piezoelectric/magnetic thin film heterostructure yields potential for the realization of novel microwave devices and applications in magnonics. In the present work, we investigate the SAW-SW interaction in a Pt/Co(2 nm)/Ru(0.85 nm)/Co(4 nm)/Pt synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) composed of two ferromagnetic layers with different thicknesses separated by a thin nonmagnetic Ru spacer layer. Because of the combined presence of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction (iDMI) and interlayer dipolar coupling fields, t…
Coupling between dynamic strain and magnetization in ferromagnetic thin films has attracted special consideration as it presents both intriguing fundamental physics problems and technological importance for potential multi-functional devices and information handling. The dynamic strain can be generated by acoustic waves including bulk, surface or guided waves. In this work, we propose the theoretical and experimental investigation of the interaction of pure shear horizontal (SH) wave with a uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo thin film in a delay line configuration fabricated on Quartz ST-90X cut…
Due to the large anomalous Hall effect, magnetic Weyl semimetals can support nonreciprocal surface plasmon polariton modes in the absence of an external magnetic field. This implies that magnetic Weyl semimetals can find novel application in (thermal) photonics. In this work, we consider the near-field radiative heat transfer between two magnetic Weyl semimetal slabs and show that the heat transfer can be controlled with a relative rotation of the parallel slabs. Thanks to the intrinsic nonreciprocity of the surface modes, this so-called twisting method does not require surface structuring lik…
Photonic topological insulator plates violate Lorentz reciprocity which leads to a directionality of surface-guided modes. This in-plane directionality can be imprinted via an applied magnetic field. On the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in nonreciprocal media, we show that two photonic topological insulator surfaces are subject to a tuneable, magnetic-field dependent Casimir torque. Due to the directionality, this torque exhibits a unique $2π$ periodicity, in contradistinction to the Casimir torques encountered for reciprocal uniaxial birefringent media or corrugated surfaces wh…
We present a combined classical and quantum electrodynamics description of the coupling between two circularly-polarized quantum emitters held above a metal surface supporting surface plasmons. Depending on their position and their natural frequency, the emitter-emitter interactions evolve from being reciprocal to nonreciprocal, which makes the system a highly tunable platform for chiral coupling at the nanoscale. By relaxing the stringent material and geometrical constraints for chirality, we explore the interplay between coherent and dissipative coupling mechanisms in the system. Thus, we re…

Harnessing the causal relationships between mechanical and magnetic properties of van der Waals materials presents a wealth of untapped opportunity for scientific and technological advancement, from precision sensing to novel memories. This can, however, only be exploited if the means exist to efficiently interface with the magnetoelastic interaction. Here, we demonstrate acoustically-driven spin-wave resonance in a crystalline antiferromagnet, chromium trichloride, via surface acoustic wave irradiation. The resulting magnon-phonon coupling is found to depend strongly on sample temperature and…
