We verify a method which allows to obtain the $β$-function of supersymmetric theories regularized by higher covariant derivatives by calculating only specially modified vacuum supergraphs. With the help of this method for a general renormalizable ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory a part of the three-loop $β$-function depending on the Yukawa couplings is constructed in the general $ξ$-gauge. The result is written in the form of an integral of double total derivatives with respect to the loop momenta. It is demonstrated that all gauge dependent terms cancel each other in agreement with the general statements. Taking into account that the result in the Feynman gauge (found earlier) coincides with the one obtained by the standard technique, this fact confirms the correctness of the considered method by a highly nontrivial multiloop calculation.
We enlarge the usual D=3 N=1 supergraph techniques to include the case of (explicitly or spontaneously) broken supersymmetric gauge theories. To illustrate the utility of these techniques, we calculate the two-loop effective potential of the SQED3 by using the tadpole and the vacuum bubble methods. In these methods, to investigate the possibility of supersymmetry breaking, the superfields must be shifted by $θ$ dependent classical superfields (vacuum expectation values), what implies in the explicit breakdown of supersymmetry in the intermediate steps of the calculation. Nevertheless, after st…
We give a relatively simple explanation of the light-cone supergraph prediction for the UV properties of the maximally supersymmetric theories. It is based on the existence of a dynamical supersymmetry which is not manifest in the light-cone supergraphs. It suggests that N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is UV finite and N=8 supergravity is UV finite at least until 7 loops whereas the $n$-point amplitudes have no UV divergences at least until $L=n+3$. Here we show that this prediction can be deduced from the properties of light-cone supergraphs analogous to the light-by-light scattering eff…
We consider $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory formulated in ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ harmonic superspace and analyze the structure of the two-loop divergences in the hypermultiplet sector. Using the ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ superfield background field method we study the two-point supergraphs with the hypermultiplet legs and prove that their total contribution to the divergent part of effective action vanishes off shell.
In this work, we adopt the simplest model that spontaneously breaks supersymmetry, namely, the minimal O'Raifeartaigh model. The effective potential is computed in the framework of the linear delta expansion (LDE) approach up to the order $δ^2$, conjugated with superspace and supergraph techniques. The latter can be duly mastered even if supersymmetry is no longer exact and the efficacy of the superfield approach in connection with the LDE procedure is confirmed according to our investigation. That opens up a way for a semi-nonperturbative superspace computation which allows us to deal with sp…
We apply the harmonic superspace approach for calculating the divergent part of the one-loop effective action of $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric higher-derivative gauge theory with a dimensionless coupling constant. Our consideration uses the background superfield method allowing to carry out the analysis of the effective action in a manifestly gauge covariant and ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric way. We exploit the regularization by dimensional reduction in which the divergences are absorbed into a renormalization of the coupling constant. Having the expression for the one-loop divergenc…
Using the covariant N=2 harmonic supergraph techniques we calculate the one-loop low-energy effective action of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb branch with gauge group SU(2) spontaneously broken down to U(1). The full dependence of the low-energy effective action on both the hypermultiplet and gauge fields is determined. The direct quantum calculation confirms the correctness of the exact N=4 SYM low-energy effective action derived in hep-th/0111062 on the purely algebraic ground by invoking a hidden N=2 supersymmetry which completes the manifest N=2 one to N=4. Our results provide an e…
We study the one-loop effective action for $6D,$ ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric Yang--Mills (SYM) theory with hypermultiplets and $6D,$ ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ SYM theory as a subclass of the former, using the off-shell formulation of these theories in $6D,$ ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ harmonic superspace. We develop the corresponding supergraph technique and apply it to compute the one-loop divergences in the background field method ensuring the manifest gauge invariance. We calculate the two-point Green functions of the gauge superfield and the hypermultiplet, as well as the three-point gauge-hypermultipet G…
We apply the supergraph with spurion technique to compute the renormalization of one-loop diagrams that contributes to electron and selectron self energies in a softly broken Supersymmetric Quantum Electrodynamics (SQED). In particular, we calculate the one-loop gauge superfield contribution to the two-point function.
Recent one-loop calculations of certain supergravity-mediated quantum corrections in supersymmetric brane-world models employ either the component formulation (hep-th/0305184) or the superfield formalism with only half of the bulk supersymmetry manifestly realized (hep-th/0305169 and hep-th/0411216). There are reasons to expect, however, that 5D supergraphs provide a more efficient setup to deal with these and more involved (in particular, higher-loop) calculations. As a first step toward elaborating such supergraph techniques, we develop in this letter a manifestly supersymmetric formulation …
The Adler function D is found {\em exactly} in supersymmetric QCD. Our exact formula relates D(Q^2) to the anomalous dimension of the matter superfields γ(α_s(Q^2)). En rout we prove another theorem: the absence of the so-called singlet contribution to D. While such singlet contributions are present in individual supergraphs, they cancel in the sum.
We study systematically, through two loops, the divergence structure of the supersymmetric WZ model defined on the N=1/2 nonanticommutative superspace. By introducing a spurion field to represent the supersymmetry breaking term F^3 we are able to perform our calculations using conventional supergraph techniques. Divergent terms proportional to F, F^2 and F^3 are produced (the first two are to be expected on general grounds) but no higher-point divergences are found. By adding ab initio F and F^2 terms to the original lagrangian we render the model renormalizable. We determine the renormalizati…
We develop the background field method for studying classical and quantum aspects of N=3, d=3 Chern-Simons and matter theories in N=3 harmonic superspace. As one of the immediate consequences, we prove a nonrenormalization theorem implying the ultra-violet finiteness of the corresponding supergraph perturbation theory. We also derive the general hypermultiplet and gauge superfield propagators in a Chern-Simons background. The leading supergraphs with two and four external lines are evaluated. In contrast to the non-supersymmetric theory, the leading quantum correction to the massive charged hy…
Inspired by the tachyon-free non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string we consider a special class of non-supersymmetric field theories: Those that can be obtained from supersymmetric field theories by supersymmetry breaking twists. We argue that such theories, like their supersymmetric counter parts, may still possess some fermionic symmetries as left-overs of the super gauge transformations and have special one-loop non-renormalization properties due to holomorphicity. In addition, we extend the supergraph techniques to these theories to calculate some explicit supersymmetry-breaking…
We compute the two-loop effective Kähler potential in three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric electrodynamics with Chern-Simons kinetic term for the gauge superfield. The effective action is constructed on the base of background field method with one parametric family of gauges. In such an approach, the quadratic part of quantum action mixes the gauge and matter quantum superfields yielding the complications in the computations of the loop supergraphs. To avoid this obstacle and preserve dependence on the gauge parameter we make a nonlocal change of quantum matter superfields after which the prop…
In this article actions for N=4 SYM and N=8 supergravity are formulated in terms of a chiral superfield, which contains only the physical degrees of freedom of either theory. In these new actions, which originate from the lightcone superspace, the supergravity cubic vertex is the square of the gauge theory one (omitting the color structures). Amplitude calculations using the corresponding Feynman supergraph rules are tedious, but can be simplified by choosing a preferred superframe. Recursive calculations of all MHV amplitudes in N=4 SYM and the four-point N=8 supergravity amplitude are shown …
We analyze the structure of multiloop supergraphs contributing to the effective Lagrangians in 4d supersymmetric gauge theories and in the models obtained from them by dimensional reduction. When d=4, this gives the renormalization of the effective charge. For d < 4, the low-energy effective Lagrangian describes the metric on the moduli space of classical vacua. These two problems turn out to be closely related. In particular, we establish the relationship between the 4d nonrenormalization theorems (in minimal and extended supersymmetric theories) and their low--dimensional counterparts.
We investigate some peculiarities in the calculation of the two-loop beta-function of $N=1$ supersymmetric models which are intimately related to the so-called "Anomaly Puzzle". There is an apparent paradox when the computation is performed in the framework of the covariant derivative background field method. In this formalism, it is obtained a finite two-loop effective action, although a non-null coefficient for the beta-function is achieved by means of the renormalized two-point function in the background field. We show that if the standard background field method is used, this two-point fun…
For a general renormalizable ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory with a simple gauge group we verify the ultraviolet (UV) finiteness of the two-loop matter contribution to the triple gauge-ghost vertices. These vertices have one leg of the quantum gauge superfield and two legs corresponding to the Faddeev--Popov ghost and antighost. By an explicit calculation made with the help of the higher covariant derivative regularization we demonstrate that the sum of the corresponding two-loop supergraphs containing a matter loop is not UV divergent in the case of using a general $ξ$-gauge. In the …
We find the three-loop contribution to the $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories regularized by higher covariant derivatives produced by the supergraphs containing loops of the Faddeev--Popov ghosts. This is done using a recently proposed algorithm, which essentially simplifies such multiloop calculations. The result is presented in the form of an integral of double total derivatives in the momentum space. The considered contribution to the $β$-function is compared with the two-loop anomalous dimension of the Faddeev--Popov ghosts. This allows verifying the validity of the…
We perform a supergraph computation of the effective Kaehler potential at one and two loops for general four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric theories described by arbitrary Kaehler potential, superpotential and gauge kinetic function. We only insist on gauge invariance of the Kaehler potential and the superpotential as we heavily rely on its consequences in the quantum theory. However, we do not require gauge invariance for the gauge kinetic functions, so that our results can also be applied to anomalous theories that involve the Green-Schwarz mechanism. We illustrate our two loop results by co…
We review the recent progress in studying the quantum structure of $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ and ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetric gauge theories formulated through unconstrained harmonic superfields. The harmonic superfield approach allows one to carry out the quantization and calculations of the quantum corrections in a manifestly ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric way. The quantum effective action is constructed with the help of the background field method that secures the manifest gauge invariance of the results. Although the theories under consideration are not renormalizable, the extended supers…
We compute the one-loop four-point function in {\cal N}=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group U(N). We perform the calculation in {\cal N}=1 superspace using the background field method and obtain the complete off-shell contributions to the effective action from planar and non planar supergraphs. In the low-energy approximation the result simplifies and we can study its properties under gauge transformations. It appears that the nonplanar contributions do not maintain the gauge invariance of the classical action.
We analyze the vacuum structure of N=1/2 chiral supersymmetric theories in deformed superspace. In particular we study O'Raifeartaigh models with C-deformed superpotentials and canonical and non-canonical deformed Kahler potentials. We find conditions under which the vacuum configurations are affected by the deformations.
We present a novel source for supersymmetry breaking in orientifold models, and show that it gives a vanishing contribution to the vacuum energy at genus zero and three-half. We also argue that all the corresponding perturbative contributions to the vacuum energy from higher-genus Riemann surfaces vanish identically.
We study the vacuum polarization of supersymmetric toroidal D-brane placed in the constant electromagnetic field. Explicit calculation of the one-loop effective potential is performed for membrane with constant magnetic or electric background. We find the one-loop potentials vanish as the effect of supersymmetry,
We consider supersymmetric gauge theories coupled to hyper multiplets on five and six dimensional orbifolds and determine the bulk and local fixed point renormalizations of the gauge couplings. We infer from a component analysis that the hyper multiplet does not induce renormalization of the brane gauge couplings on the five dimensional orbifold S^1/Z_2. This is not due to supersymmetry, since the bosonic and fermionic contributions cancel separately. We extend this investigation to T^2/Z_N orbifolds using supergraph techniques in six dimensions. On general Z_N orbifolds the gauge couplings do…
Based on a talk given at the Pomeranchuk memorial conference at ITEP in June 2013, we review the vacuum dynamics in 3d supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories with and without extra matter multiplets. By analyzing the effective Born-Oppenheimer Hamiltonian in a small spatial box, we calculate the number of vacuum states (Witten index) and examine their structure for these theories. The results are identical to those obtained by other methods.
In supersymmetric models with the run-away vacua or with the stable but non-supersymmetric ground state there exist stable field configurations (vacua) which restore one half of supersymmetry and are characterized by constant positive energy density. The formal foundation for such vacua is provided by the central extension of the N =1 superalgebra with the infinite central charge.
The two-loop (Euler-Heisenberg-type) effective action for N = 2 supersymmetric QED is computed using the N = 1 superspace formulation. The effective action is expressed as a series in supersymmetric extensions of F^{2n}, where n=2,3,..., with F the field strength. The corresponding coefficients are given by triple proper-time integrals which are evaluated exactly. As a by-product, we demonstrate the appearance of a non-vanishing F^4 quantum correction at the two-loop order. The latter result is in conflict with the conclusion of hep-th/9710142 that no such quantum corrections are generated at …
Vacuum structures of supersymmetric (SUSY) Yang-Mills theories in $1+1$ dimensions are studied with the spatial direction compactified. SUSY allows only periodic boundary conditions for both fermions and bosons. By using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for the weak coupling limit, we find that the vacuum energy vanishes, and hence the SUSY is unbroken. Other boundary conditions are also studied, especially the antiperiodic boundary condition for fermions which is related to the system in finite temperatures. In that case we find for gaugino bilinears a nonvanishing vacuum condensation which…
We calculate vacuum energy for twisted SUSY D-brane on toroidal background with constant magnetic or constant electric field. Its behaviour for toroidal D-brane (p=2) in constant electric field shows the presence of stable minimum for twisted versions of the theory. That indicates such a background maybe reasonable groundstate.
We present an exact description of the metric on the moduli space of vacua and the spectrum of massive states for four dimensional N=2 supersymmetric SU(n) gauge theories. The moduli space of quantum vacua is identified with the moduli space of a special set of genus n-1 hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces.
We study the stability of supersymmetry breaking vacuum in the presence of cosmic strings arising in the messenger sector. For certain ranges of the couplings, the desired supersymmetry breaking vacua become unstable against decay into phenomenologically unacceptable vacua. This sets constraints on the range of allowed values of the coupling constants appearing in the models and more generally on the chosen dynamics of gauge symmetry breaking.
By computing the two-loop effective potential of the D=3 N=1 supersymmetric Chern-Simons model minimally coupled to a massless self-interacting matter superfield, it is shown that supersymmetry is preserved, while the internal U(1) and the scale symmetries are broken at two-loop order, dynamically generating masses both for the gauge superfield and for the real component of the matter superfield.
We use the Konishi anomaly equations to construct the exact effective superpotential of the glueball superfields in various N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories. We use the superpotentials to study in detail the structure of the spaces of vacua of these theories. We consider chiral and non-chiral SU(N) models, the exceptional gauge group G(2) and models that break supersymmetry dynamically.
In this talk, we present three examples of new non-trivial vacuum structures that can occur in supersymmetric field theories, along with explicit models in which they arise. The first vacuum structure is one in which supersymmetry is broken at tree-level in a perturbative theory that also contains a supersymmetry-preserving ground state. Models realizing this structure are uniquely characterized by the fact that no flat directions appear in the classical potential, all vacua appear at finite distances in field space, and no non-perturbative physics is required for vacuum stability. The second …
We verify a recently proposed method for obtaining a $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories regularized by higher derivatives by an explicit calculation. According to this method, a $β$-function can be found by calculating specially modified vacuum supergraphs instead of a much larger number of the two-point superdiagrams. The result is produced in the form of a certain integral of double total derivatives with respect to the loop momenta. Here we compare the results obtained for the three-loop $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ SQED in the general $ξ$-gauge with the help of this…
We present a nonsupersymmetric orbifold of type II string theory and show that it has vanishing cosmological constant at the one and two loop level. We argue heuristically that the cancellation persists at higher loops.
We obtain a new gauged D=6, N=(1,1) pure supergravity by a generalised consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of M-theory on K3 \times R. The reduction requires a conspiratory gauging of both the Cremmer-Julia type global (rigid) symmetry and the homogeneous rescaling symmetry of the supergravity equations of motion. The gauged supergravity is different from the Romans D=6 gauged supergravity in that the four vector fields in our new theory are all abelian. We show that it admits a supersymmetric (Minkowski)_4\times S^2 vacuum, which can be lifted to D=11 where it becomes the near-horizon geometry …
We suggest the quasiparticle picture behind the integrable structure of N=2 SYM theory, which arises if the Lax operator is considered as a Hamiltonian for the fermionic system. We compare the meaning of BPS states with the one coming from the D-brane interpretation and give some evidence for the compositeness of the selfdual strings. The temperature phase transition with the disappearance of the mass gap is conjectured.
We study dynamical supersymmetry breaking in supersymmetric QCD theories for $N_f<N_c$. We consider a model with a singlet chiral superfield coupled to the infrared meson chiral superfield through a classical superpotential. We examine the vacuum structure of this model and show that in a particular limit of the parameter space with the large $N_c$ limit, it has a vacuum that dynamically breaks supersymmetry. The supersymmetric vacuum, in this limit, is being pushed to infinity.
We study open descendants of non-supersymmetric type IIB asymmetric (freely acting) orbifolds with zero cosmological constant. A generic feature of these models is that supersymmetry remains unbroken on the brane at all mass levels, while it is broken in the bulk in a way that preserves Fermi-Bose degeneracy in both the massless and massive (closed string) spectrum. This property remains valid in the heterotic dual of the type II model but only for the massless excitations. A possible application of these constructions concerns scenarios of low-energy supersymmetry breaking with large dimensio…
We continue studying $6D, {\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in the ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ harmonic superspace formulation. Using the superfield background field method we explore the two-loop divergencies of the effective action in the gauge multiplet sector. It is explicitly demonstrated that among four two-loop background-field dependent supergraphs contributing to the effective action, only one diverges off shell. It is also shown that the divergences are proportional to the superfield classical equations of motion and hence vanish on shell. Besides, we have analyzed a possib…
We determine the spectrum of scalar masses in a supersymmetric vacuum of a general N=1 supergravity theory, with the Kahler potential and superpotential taken to be random functions of N complex scalar fields. We derive a random matrix model for the Hessian matrix and compute the eigenvalue spectrum. Tachyons consistent with the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound are generically present, and although these tachyons cannot destabilize the supersymmetric vacuum, they do influence the likelihood of the existence of an `uplift' to a metastable vacuum with positive cosmological constant. We show that the…
We give an elementary derivation of the de Rham cohomology of SO(n) in terms of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Our analysis is based on Witten's Morse theory. We show reflection symmetries of the theory are useful to select true vacuums. The number of the selected vacuums will agree with the de Rham cohomology of SO(n).
We examine supersymmetric quantum mechanics on $SO(4)$ to realize Witten's idea. We find instanton solutions connecting approximate vacuums. We calculate Hessian matrices for these solutions to determine true vacuums. Our result is in agreement with de Rham cohomology of $SO(4)$. We also give a criterion for cancellation of instanton effects for a pair of instanton paths.
Non-supersymmetric orbifolds of N=1 super Yang-Mills theories are conjectured to inherit properties from their supersymmetric parent. We examine this conjecture by compactifying the Z_2 orbifold theories on a spatial circle of radius R. We point out that when the orbifold theory lies in the weakly coupled vacuum of its parent, fractional instantons do give rise to the conjectured condensate of bi-fundamental fermions. Unfortunately, we show that quantum effects render this vacuum unstable through the generation of twisted operators. In the true vacuum state, no fermion condensate forms. Thus, …
An explicit proof of the existence of nontrivial vacua in the pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with higher orthogonal SO(N), N>=7 or the G_2 gauge group defined on a 3-torus with periodic boundary conditions is given. Extra vacuum states are separated by an energy barrier from the perturbative vacuum A_i=0 and its gauge copies.
The supersymmetric generalization of dilatations in the presence of the dilaton is defined. This is done by defining the supersymmetric dilaton geometry which is motivated by the supersymmetric volume preserving diffeomorphisms. The resulting model is classical superconformal field theory with an additional dilaton-axion supermultiplet coupled to the supersymmetric gauge theory, where the dilaton-axion couplings are nonrenormalizable. The possibility of spontaneous scale symmetry breaking is investigated in this context. There are three different types of vacua with broken scale symmetry depen…
We study the question of existence and the number of normalized vacuum states in N = 4 super-Yang-Mills quantum mechanics for any gauge group. The mass deformation method is the simplest and clearest one. It allowed us to calculate the number of normalized vacuum states for all gauge groups. For all unitary groups, #(vac) = 1, but for the symplectic groups [starting from Sp(6) ], for the orthogonal groups [starting from SO(8)] and for all the exceptional groups, it is greater than one. We also discuss at length the functional integral method. We calculate the ``deficit term'' for some non-unit…
It has been shown that four dimensional N=2 gauge theories, softly broken to N=1 by a superpotential term, can accommodate metastable non-supersymmetric vacua in their moduli space. We study the SU(2) theory at high temperatures in order to determine whether a cooling universe settles in the metastable vacuum at zero temperature. We show that the corrections to the free energy because of the BPS dyons are such that may destroy the existence of the metastable vacuum at high temperatures. Nevertheless we demonstrate the universe can settle in the metastable vacuum, provided that the following tw…
We study supersymmetric inhomogeneous field theories in 1+1 dimensions which have explicit coordinate dependence. Although translation symmetry is broken, part of supersymmetries can be maintained. In this paper, we consider the simplest inhomogeneous theories with one real scalar field, which possess an unbroken supersymmetry. The energy is bounded from below by the topological charge which is not necessarily nonnegative definite. The bound is saturated if the first-order Bogomolny equation is satisfied. Non-constant static supersymmetric solutions above the vacuum involve in general a zero m…
We study supersymmetric quantum mechanics on RP_{n},SO(n),G_{2} and U(2) to examine Witten's Morse theory concretely. We confirm the simple instanton picture of the de Rham cohomology that has been given in a previous paper. We use a reflection symmetry of each theory to select the true vacuums. The number of selected vacuums agrees with the de Rham cohomology for each of the above manifolds.
We study the effects induced by heavy fields on the masses of light fields in supersymmetric theories, under the assumption that the heavy mass scale is much higher than the supersymmetry breaking scale. We show that the square-masses of light scalar fields can get two different types of significant corrections when a heavy multiplet is integrated out. The first is an indirect level-repulsion effect, which may arise from heavy chiral multiplets and is always negative. The second is a direct coupling contribution, which may arise from heavy vector multiplets and can have any sign. We then apply…
It is shown that the auxiliary field in the low-energy effective theory of the supersymmetric QCD (SU(N_c) gauge symmetry with flavors N_f < N_c) can be understood as a physical degree of freedom, once the supersymmetry is explicitly broken. Although the vacuum expectation value of the auxiliary field is just a measure of the supersymmetry breaking in the perturbative treatment of the supersymmetry breaking, it can be the vacuum expectation value of the quark bilinear operator in the non-perturbative treatment of the supersymmetry breaking. We show that the vacuum expectation value remains fin…
We derive the exact effective superpotential in 4d, N=1 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theories with $N_A$ triplets and $2N_f$ doublets of matter superfields. We find the quantum vacua of these theories; the equations of motion (for $N_A=1$) can be reorganized into the singularity conditions of an elliptic curve. From the phase transition points to the Coulomb branch, we find the exact Abelian gauge couplings, $τ$, for arbitrary bare masses and Yukawa couplings. We thus {\em derive} the result that $τ$ is a section of an $SL(2,\Z)$ bundle over the moduli space and over the parameters space of bare…
