Let $(E,\mathcal E,μ)$ be a measure space and $G\colon E\times E\to [0,\infty]$ be measurable. Moreover, let $\mathcal F\!_{ui}$ denote the set of all $q\in\mathcal E^+$ (measurable numerical functions $q\ge 0$ on $E$) such that $\{G(x,\cdot)q\colon x\in E\}$ is uniformly integrable, and let $\mathcal F\!_{co}$ denote the set of all $q\in\mathcal E^+$ such that the mapping $f\mapsto G(fq) :=\int G(\cdot,y) f(y) q(y)\,dμ(y)$ is a compact operator on the space $\mathcal E_b$ of bounded measurable functions on $E$ (equipped with the sup-norm).
It is shown that $\mathcal F\!_{ui}=\mathcal F\!_{co} $ provided both $\mathcal F\!_{ui}$ and $\mathcal F\!_{co} $contain strictly positive functions.
In this paper we characterize the boundedness, compactness, and weak compactness of the integration operators \begin{align*} T_g (f)(z)=\int_{0}^{z} f(w)g'(w)\ dw \end{align*} acting on the average radial integrability spaces $RM(p,q)$. For these purposes, we develop different tools such as a description of the bidual of $RM(p,0)$ and estimates of the norm of these spaces using the derivative of the functions, a family of results that we call Littlewood-Paley type inequalities.
We present a systematic treatment of the theory of Compensated Compactness under Murat's constant rank assumption. We give a short proof of a sharp weak lower semicontinuity result for signed integrands, extending the results of Fonseca--Müller. The null Lagrangians are an important class of signed integrands, since they are the weakly continuous functions. We show that they are precisely the compensated compactness quantities with Hardy space integrability, thus proposing an answer to a question raised by Coifman-Lions-Meyer-Semmes. Finally we provide an effective way of computing the null La…
In this paper we aim at employing a compactness criterion of Da Prato, Malliavin, Nualart for square integrable Brownian functionals to construct unique strong solutions of SDE's under an integrability condition on the drift coefficient. The obtained solutions turn out to be Malliavin differentiable and are used to derive a Bismut-Elworthy-Li formula for solutions of the Kolmogorov equation.
Let (Ω,μ) be a finite measure space, X a Banach space, and let 1\le p<\infty. The aim of this paper is to give an elementary proof of the Diaz--Mayoral theorem that a subset V of L^p(μ;X) is relatively compact if and only if it is uniformly p-integrable, uniformly tight, and scalarly relatively compact.
Let $L^0$ be the vector space of all (equivalence classes of) real-valued random variables built over a probability space $(Ω, \mathcal{F}, P)$, equipped with a metric topology compatible with convergence in probability. In this work, we provide a necessary and sufficient structural condition that a set $X \subseteq L^0$ should satisfy in order to infer the existence of a probability $Q$ that is equivalent to $P$ and such that $X$ is uniformly $Q$-integrable. Furthermore, we connect the previous essentially measure-free version of uniform integrability with local convexity of the $L^0$-topolog…
We show that a family of random variables is uniformly integrable if and only if it is stochastically bounded in the increasing convex order by an integrable random variable. This result is complemented by proving analogous statements for the strong stochastic order and for power-integrable dominating random variables. Especially, we show that whenever a family of random variables is stochastically bounded by a p-integrable random variable for some p>1, there is no distinction between the strong order and the increasing convex order. These results also yield new characterizations of relative c…
We prove a compactness criterion in $L^p(μ,X)$: a subset of $L^p(μ,X)$ is relatively norm compact iff the set of integrals of its functions over any measurable set is relatively norm compact, it satisfies the Fréchet oscillation restriction condition and it is p-uniformly integrable. The proof is elementary.
Let $(Ω,Σ,μ)$ be a complete probability space, $X$ a Banach space and $1\leq p<\infty$. In this paper we discuss several aspects of $p$-Dunford integrable functions $f:Ω\to X$. Special attention is paid to the compactness of the Dunford operator of $f$. We also study the $p$-Bochner integrability of the composition $u\circ f:Ω\to Y$, where $u$ is a $p$-summing operator from $X$ to another Banach space $Y$. Finally, we also provide some tests of $p$-Dunford integrability by using $w^*$-thick subsets of $X^*$.

The well-known Kolmogorov compactness criterion is extended to the case of variable exponent Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot)}(Ω)$, where $Ω$ is a bounded open set in $\mathbb R^n$ and $p(\cdot)$ satisfies some "standard" conditions. Our final result should be called Kolmogorov-Tulajkov Sudakov compactness criterion, since it includes the case $p_-=1$ and requires only the "uniform" condition.
Recently the characterization of the compactness in the space $BV([0,1])$ of functions of bounded Jordan variation was given. Here, certain generalizations of this result are given for the spaces of functions of bounded Waterman $Λ$-variation, Young $Φ$-variation and integral variation. It appears that on the compact sets the norm is uniformly approximated by certain seminorms induced by the selection of finitely many intervals in $[0,1]$.
Let $X$ be a Banach space and let $C$ be a closed convex bounded subset of $X$. It is proved that $C$ is weakly compact if, and only if, $C$ has the {it generic} fixed point property ($\mathcal{G}$-FPP) for the class of $L$-bi-Lipschitz affine mappings for every $L>1$. It is also proved that if $X$ has Pełczyński's property $(u)$, then either $C$ is weakly compact, contains an $\ell_1$-sequence or a $\mathrm{c}_0$-summing basic sequence. In this case, weak compactness of $C$ is equivalent to the $\mathcal{G}$-FPP for the strengthened class of affine mappings that are uniformly bi-Lipschitz. We…

Functions, uniformly bounded in $BV$ norm in some bounded open set $U$ in $R^n$, are compact in $L_1(U)$. This result is known when $U$ has Lipschitz boundary [EG Th. 4 p. 176], [G 1.19 Th. p. 17], [Z 5.34 Cor. p. 227]; the proof for general $U$ here, after identifying the operator theoretic definition of bounded $BV$ norm with that of the Tonelli variation, appeals to the standard compactness criterion in $L_1$ [DS 21 TH. p. 301] [Y, p. 275] (For completeness, these two auxiliary results are also presented).
We introduce a measure of super weak noncompactness $Γ$ defined for bounded linear operators and subsets in Banach spaces that allows to state and prove a characterization of the Banach spaces which are subspaces of a Hilbert generated space. The use of super weak compactness and $Γ$ casts light on the structure of these Banach spaces and complements the work of Argyros, Fabian, Farmaki, Godefroy, Hájek, Montesinos,\linebreak Troyanski and Zizler on this subject. A particular kind of relatively super weakly compact sets, namely uniformly weakly null sets, plays an important role and exhibits c…
We characterize the relatively compact subsets of $L^1\left(\| m \| \right),$ the quasi-Banach function space associated to the semivariation of a given vector measure $m$ showing that the strong connection between compactness, uniform absolute continuity, uniform integrability, almost order boundedness and L-weak compactness that appears in the classic setting of Lebesgue spaces remains almost invariant in this new context of the Choquet integration. Also we present a de la Vallée-Poussin type theorem in the context of these spaces $L^1\left(\|m\|\right)$ that allows us to locate each compact…
Let $E$ be a Banach space such that $E'$ has the Radon-Nikodým property. The aim of this work is to connect relative weak compactness in the $E$-valued martingale Hardy space $H^{1}(μ,E)$ to a convex compactness criterion in a weaker topology, such as the topology of uniform convergence on compacts in measure. These results represent a dynamic version of the deep result of Diestel, Ruess, and Schachermayer on relative weak compactness in $L^{1}(μ,E)$. In the reflexive case, we obtain a Kadec-Pełczyński dichotomy for $H^{1}(μ,E)$-bounded sequences, which decomposes a subsequence into a relative…
Continuity, compactness, the spectrum and ergodic properties of the differentiation operator are investigated, when it acts in the Fréchet space of all Dirichlet series that are uniformly convergent in all half-planes $\{s \in \mathbb{C} \ | \ {\rm Re} s > \varepsilon \}$ for each $\varepsilon>0$. The properties of the formal inverse of the differentiation are also investigated.
Concentration-compactness is used to prove compactness of maximising sequences for a variational problem governing symmetric steady vortex-pairs in a uniform planar ideal fluid flow, where the kinetic energy is to be maximised and the constraint set comprises the set of all equimeasurable rearrangements of a given function (representing vorticity) that have prescribed impulse (lnear momentum). A form of orbital stability is deduced.
Using concentration-compactness arguments we prove a variant of the Brezis-Lieb-Lemma under weaker assumptions on the nonlinearity than known before. An intermediate result on the uniform continuity of superposition operators in Sobolev space is of independent interest.
The paper presents some weak compactness criterion for a subset $M$ of the set $\mathfrak{RM}_b(T,\mathcal{G})$ of all positive bounded Radon measures on a Hausdorff topological space $(T,\mathcal{G})$ similar to the Prokhorov criterion for a complete separable metric space. Since for a general topological space the classical space $C_b(T,\mathcal{G})$ of all bounded continuous functions on $T$ can be trivial and so does not separate points and closed sets, instead of $C_b(T,\mathcal{G})$-weak compactness we consider $S(T,\mathcal{G})$-weak compactness with respect to the new uniformly closed …
We work in set-theory without choice ZF. Denoting by AC(N) the countable axiom of choice, we show in ZF+AC(N) that the closed unit ball of a uniformly convex Banach space is compact in the convex topology (an alternative to the weak topology in ZF). We prove that this ball is (closely) convex-compact in the convex topology. Given a set I, a real number p greater or equal to 1 (resp. . p = 0), and some closed subset F of [0, 1]^I which is a bounded subset of l^p(I), we show that AC(N) (resp. DC, the axiom of Dependent Choices) implies the compactness of F.
In this article we prove that the co-compactness of the arithmetic lattices in a connected semisimple real Lie group is preserved if the lattices under consideration are representation equivalent. This is in the spirit of the question posed by Gopal Prasad and A. S. Rapinchuk where instead of representation equivalence, the lattices under consideration are weakly commensurable Zariski dense subgroups.
