Frank and Lieb gave a new, rearrangement-free, proof of the sharp Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities by exploiting their conformal covariance. In this work we consider dimensional improvements of the logarithmic Sobolev, Talagrand and Brascamp-Lieb inequalities. For this we use optimal transport methods and the Borell-Brascamp-Lieb inequality. These refinements can be written as a deficit in the classical inequalities. They have the right scale with respect to the dimension. They lead to sharpened concentration properties as well as refined contraction bounds, convergence to equilibrium and short time behaviour for the laws of solutions to stochastic differential equations.
We review some topics in the theory of symmetric decreasing rearrangements with a particular focus on Lieb's fundamental contributions. We generalize the theorems of Stein--Tomas and Strichartz about surface restrictions of Fourier transforms to systems of orthonormal functions with an optimal dependence on the number of functions. We deduce the corresponding Strichartz bounds for solutions to Schrödinger equations up to the endpoint, thereby solving an open problem of Frank, Lewin, Lieb and Seiringer. We prove a Lieb-Thirring type inequality for potentials such that the associated Schrödinger operator has a pure discrete spectrum made of an unbounded sequence of eigenvalues. This inequality is equivalent to a generalized Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality for systems. As a special case, we prove a logarithmic Sobolev inequality for infinite systems of mixed states. Optimal constants are determined and free energy estimates in connection with mixed states representations are also investigated.
We review recent results on functional inequalities for systems of orthonormal functions. The key finding is that for various operators the orthonormality leads to a gain over a simple application of the triangle inequality. Cocompactness is a useful weaker counterpart of compactness in the study of imbeddings between function spaces. In this paper we show that subcritical continuous imbeddings of fractional Sobolev spaces and Besov spaces over \mathbb{R}^{N} are cocompact relative to lattice shifts. We use techniques of interpolation spaces to deduce our results from known cocompact imbeddings for classical Sobolev spaces ("vanishing" lemmas of Lieb and Lions). Math. 2019 or arXiv:1712.08836) on the existence of a maximizer of convolution operator acting between two Lebesgue spaces on $R^n$ with kernel from some $L_q$, $1<q<\infty$. Extending a recent result by Frank and Lieb, we show an entropic uncertainty principle for mixed states in a Hilbert space relatively to pairs of positive operator valued measures that are independent in some sense. This yields spatial-spectral uncertainty principles and log-Sobolev inequalities for invariant operators on homogeneous spaces, which are sharp in the compact case.
