Concentration-compactness is used to prove compactness of maximising sequences for a variational problem governing symmetric steady vortex-pairs in a uniform planar ideal fluid flow, where the kinetic energy is to be maximised and the constraint set comprises the set of all equimeasurable rearrangements of a given function (representing vorticity) that have prescribed impulse (lnear momentum). A form of orbital stability is deduced.
In this paper, we consider a constrained maximization problem related to planar vortex pairs with prescribed impulse. We prove existence, stability and asymptotic behavior for the maximizers, hence obtain a family of stable traveling vortex pairs approaching a pair of point vortices with equal magnitude and opposite signs. As a corollary, we get fine asymptotic estimates for Burton's vortex pairs with large impulse. For the non-concentrated case, we prove a form of stability for the Chaplygin-Lamb dipole.
In the spirit of the paper "Large conformal metrics of prescribed Gauss curvature on surfaces of higher genus" by Borer-Galimberti-Struwe, where we dealt with the case of a closed Riemann surface $(M,g_0)$ of genus greater than one, here we study the behaviour of the conformal metrics $g_λ$ of prescribed Gauss curvature $K_{g_λ} = f_0 + λ$ on the torus, when the parameter $λ$ tends to one of the boundary points of the interval of existence of $g_λ$, and we characterize their "bubbling behaviour".
Let $(M, g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $N \geq 5$ and $Q_g$ be its $Q$ curvature. The prescribed $Q$ curvature problem is concerned with finding metric of constant $Q$ curvature in the conformal class of $g$. This amounts to finding a positive solution to \[ P_g (u)= c u^{\frac{N+4}{N-4}}, u>0 {on} M\] where $P_g$ is the Paneitz operator. We show that for dimensions $N \geq 25$, the set of all positive solutions to the prescribed $Q$ curvature problem is {\em non-compact}.
In a previous paper we developed a regularity and compactness theory in Euclidean ambient spaces for codimension 1 weakly stable CMC integral varifolds satisfying two (necessary) structural conditions. Here we generalize this theory to the setting where the mean curvature (of the regular part of the varifold) is prescribed by a given $C^{1, α}$ ambient function $g$ and the ambient space is a general $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold; we give general conditions that imply that the support of the varifold, away from a possible singular set of dimension $\leq n-7,$ is the image of a $C^{2}$…
We consider, in a first instance, the class of boundaries of sets with locally finite perimeter whose (weakly defined) mean curvature is $g ν$, for a given continuous positive ambient function $g$, and where $ν$ denotes the inner normal. It is well-known that taking limits in the sense of varifolds within this class is not possible in general, due to the appearence of "hidden boundaries", that is, portions (of positive measure with even multiplicity) on which the (weakly defined) mean curvature vanishes, so that $g$ does not prescribe the mean curvature in the limit. As a special instance of a…
We consider minimizers of linear functionals of the type $$L(u)=\int_{\p Ω} u \, d σ- \int_Ω u \, dx$$ in the class of convex functions $u$ with prescribed determinant $\det D^2 u =f$. We obtain compactness properties for such minimizers and discuss their regularity in two dimensions.
We study the prescribed scalar curvature problem in a conformal class on orbifolds with isolated singularities. We prove a compactness theorem in dimension $4$, and an existence theorem which holds in dimensions $n \geq 4$. This problem is more subtle than the manifold case since the positive mass theorem does not hold for ALE metrics in general. We also determine the $\rm{U}(2)$-invariant Leray-Schauder degree for a family of negative-mass orbifolds found by LeBrun.
In this paper we study the problem of prescribing fractional $Q$-curvature of order $2σ$ for a conformal metric on the standard sphere $\Sn$ with $σ\in (0,n/2)$ and $n\geq2$. Compactness and existence results are obtained in terms of the flatness order $β$ of the prescribed curvature function $K$. Making use of integral representations and perturbation result, we develop a unified approach to obtain these results when $β\in [n-2σ,n)$ for all $σ\in (0,n/2)$. This work generalizes the corresponding results of Jin-Li-Xiong [Math. Ann. 369: 109--151, 2017] for $β\in (n-2σ,n)$.
We discuss compactness, blow-up and quantization phenomena for the prescribed $Q$-curvature equation $(-Δ)^m u_k=V_ke^{2mu_k}$ on open domains of $\R{2m}$. Under natural integral assumptions we show that when blow-up occurs, up to a subsequence $$\lim_{k\to \infty}\int_{Ω_0} V_ke^{2mu_k}dx=LΛ_1,$$ where $Ω_0\subset\subsetΩ$ is open and contains the blow-up points, $L\in\mathbb{N}$ and $Λ_1:=(2m-1)!\vol(S^{2m})$ is the total $Q$-curvature of the round sphere $S^{2m}$. Moreover, under suitable assumptions, the blow-up points are isolated. We do not assume that $V$ is positive.
In this thesis we deal with two different classes of variational problems: 1) the problem of closed curves with prescribed curvature, or $H$-loop problem; 2) the study of the nodal solutions of the fractional Brezis-Nirenberg problem. In both cases we deal with nonlinear equations (an ODE system for problem 1, and an elliptic equation for problem 2) which admit a variational structure. Nevertheless, in both cases, a lack of compactness occurs and this constitutes a strong obstruction for the application of the direct methods of the calculus of variations or even standard variational methods. T…
In this paper, using the theory of critical points at infinity of Bahri, we derive an exact bubbling rate formula for the resonant prescribed Q-curvature equation on closed even-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. Using this, we derive new existence results for the resonant prescribed Q-curvature problem under a positive mass type assumption. Moreover, we derive a compactness theorem for conformal metrics with prescribed Q-curvature under a non-degeneracy assumption. Furthermore, combining the bubbling rate formula with the construction of some blowing-up solutions, we compute the Leray-Schauder…
We consider the case with boundary of the classical Kazdan-Warner problem in dimension greater or equal than three, i.e. the prescription of scalar and boundary mean curvatures via conformal deformations of the metric. We deal in particular with negative scalar curvature and boundary mean curvature of arbitrary sign, which to our knowledge has not been treated in the literature. We employ a variational approach to prove new existence results, especially in three dimensions. One of the principal issues for this problem is to obtain compactness properties, due to the fact that bubbling may occur…
Let $A \subset \mathbb{R} ^2 $ be a smooth doubly connected domain. We consider the Dirichlet energy $E(u)=\int_{A} |\nabla u|^2$, where $u:A \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$, and look for critical points of this energy with prescribed modulus $|u|=1$ on $\partial A$ and with prescribed degrees on the two connected components of $\partial A$. This variational problem is a problem with lack of compactness hence we can not use the direct methods of calculus of variations. Our analysis relies on the so-called Hopf differential and on a strong link between this problem and the problem of finding all minima…
A fundamental problem in differential geometry is to characterize intrinsic metrics on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold ${\mathcal M}^2$ which can be realized as isometric immersions into $\R^3$. This problem can be formulated as initial and/or boundary value problems for a system of nonlinear partial differential equations of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type whose mathematical theory is largely incomplete. In this paper, we develop a general approach, which combines a fluid dynamic formulation of balance laws for the Gauss-Codazzi system with a compensated compactness framework, to deal wi…
We introduce a new perspective on the classical Nirenberg problem of understanding the possible Gauss curvatures of metrics on $S^{2}$ conformal to the round metric. A key tool is to employ the smooth Cheeger-Gromov compactness theorem to obtain general and essentially sharp a priori estimates for Gauss curvatures $K$ contained in naturally defined stable regions. We prove that in such stable regions, the map $u \rightarrow K_{g}$, $g = e^{2u}g_{+1}$ is a proper Fredholm map with well-defined degree on each component. This leads to a number of new existence and non-existence results. We also p…
In this paper we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary. We prove its solvability and the compactness of the solution set, provided the Ricci tensor is non-negative definite.
In [Comm. Math. Phys. 324 (2013), 445--463], Burton-Lopes Filho-Nussenzveig Lopes studied the existence and stability of slowly traveling vortex pairs as maximizers of the kinetic energy penalized by the impulse relative to a prescribed rearrangement class. In this paper, we prove that after a suitable scaling transformation the maximization problem studied by Burton-Lopes Filho-Nussenzveig Lopes in fact gives rise to a family of concentrated vortex pairs approaching a pair of point vortices with equal magnitude and opposite signs. The key ingredient of the proof is to deduce a uniform bound f…
We study the minimization of convex, variational integrals of linear growth among all functions in the Sobolev space $W^{1,1}$ with prescribed boundary values (or its equivalent formulation as a boundary value problem for a degenerately elliptic Euler--Lagrange equation). Due to insufficient compactness properties of these Dirichlet classes, the existence of solutions does not follow in a standard way by the direct method in the calculus of variations and in fact might fail, as it is well-known already for the non-parametric minimal surface problem. Assuming radial structure, we establish a ne…
We study the compactness properties of metrics of prescribed fractional $Q$-curvature of order $3$ in $\R^3$. We will use an approach inspired from conformal geometry, seeing a metric on a subset of $\R^3$ as the restriction of a metric on $\R^4_+$ with vanishing fourth-order $Q$-curvature. We will show that a sequence of such metrics with uniformly bounded fractional $Q$-curvature can blow up on a large set (roughly, the zero set of the trace of a nonpositive biharmonic function $Φ$ in $\R^4_+$), in analogy with a $4$-dimensional result of Adimurthi-Robert-Struwe, and construct examples of su…
We study stability of a spherical vortex introduced by M. Hill in 1894, which is an explicit solution of the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. The flow is axi-symmetric with no swirl, the vortex core is simply a ball sliding on the axis of symmetry with a constant speed, and the vorticity in the core is proportional to the distance from the symmetry axis. We use the variational setting introduced by A. Friedman and B. Turkington (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 1981), which produced a maximizer of the kinetic energy under constraints on vortex strength, impulse, and circulation. We ma…
We study the problem of prescribing $σ_k$-curvature for a conformal metric on the standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ with $2 \leq k < n/2$ and $n \geq 5$ in axisymmetry. Compactness, non-compactness, existence and non-existence results are proved in terms of the behaviors of the prescribed curvature function $K$ near the north and the south poles. For example, consider the case when the north and the south poles are local maximum points of $K$ of flatness order $β\in [2,n)$. We prove among other things the following statements. (1) When $β>n-2k$, the solution set is compact, has a nonzero total de…

Consider the initial-boundary value problem for a strictly hyperbolic, genuinely nonlinear, Temple class system of conservation laws % $$ u_t+f(u)_x=0, \qquad u(0,x)=\ov u(x), \qquad {{array}{ll} &u(t,a)=\widetilde u_a(t), \noalign{\smallskip} &u(t,b)=\widetilde u_b(t), {array}. \eqno(1) $$ on the domain $Ω=\{(t,x)\in\R^2 : t\geq 0, a \le x\leq b\}.$ We study the mixed problem (1) from the point of view of control theory, taking the initial data $\bar u$ fixed, and regarding the boundary data $\widetilde u_a, \widetilde u_b$ as control functions that vary in prescribed sets $\U_a, \U_b$, of $\…
