We study stellar population and structural properties of massive $\log(M_{\star} / M_{\odot}) >11$ galaxies at $z\sim 2.7$ in the Magneticum and IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations and GAEA semi-analytic model. We find stellar mass functions broadly consistent with observations, with no scarcity of massive, quiescent galaxies at $z\sim 2.7$, but with a higher quiescent galaxy fraction at high masses in IllustrisTNG. Average ages of simulated quiescent galaxies are between $\sim 0.8$ and 1.0 Gyr, older by a factor $\sim 2$ than observed in spectroscopically-confirmed quiescent galaxies at similar redshift. Besides being potentially indicative of limitations of simulations in reproducing observed star formation histories, this discrepancy may also reflect limitations in the estimation of observed ages. We investigate the purity of simulated UVJ rest-frame color-selected massive quiescent samples with photometric uncertainties typical of deep surveys (e.g., COSMOS). We find evidence for significant contamination (up to 60 percent) by dusty star-forming galaxies in the UVJ region that is typically populated by older quiescent sources. Furthermore, the completeness of UVJ-selected quiescent samples at this redshift may be reduced by 30 percent due to a high fraction of young quiescent galaxies not entering the UVJ quiescent region. Massive, quiescent galaxies in simulations have on average lower angular momenta and higher projected axis ratios and concentrations than star-forming counterparts. Average sizes of simulated quiescent galaxies are broadly consistent with observations within the uncertainties. The average size ratio of quiescent and star-forming galaxies in the probed mass range is formally consistent with observations, although this result is partly affected by poor statistics.
This Letter examines how the sizes, structures, and color gradients of galaxies change along the quiescent sequence. Our sample consists of ~400 quiescent galaxies at $1.0\le z\le2.5$ and $10.1 \le \log{M_*/M_\odot}\le11.6$ in three CANDELS fields. We exploit deep multi-band HST imaging to derive accurate mass profiles and color gradients, then use an empirical calibration from rest-frame UVJ colors to estimate galaxy ages. We find that -- contrary to previous results -- the youngest quiescent galaxies are not significantly smaller than older quiescent galaxies at fixed stellar mass. These `po…

We present deep near-infrared spectra for a sample of 24 quiescent galaxies in the redshift range 1.5 < z < 2.5 obtained with the MOSFIRE spectrograph at the W. M. Keck Observatory. In conjunction with a similar dataset we obtained in the range 1 < z < 1.5 with the LRIS spectrograph, we analyze the kinematic and structural properties for 80 quiescent galaxies, the largest homogeneously-selected sample to date spanning 3 Gyr of early cosmic history. Analysis of our Keck spectra together with measurements derived from associated HST images reveals increasingly larger stellar velocity dispersions…
We investigate the median flattening of galaxies at $0.2<z<4.0$ in all five CANDELS/3D-HST fields via the apparent axis ratio $q$. We separate the sample into bins of redshift, stellar-mass, sérsic index, size, and UVJ determined star-forming state to discover the most important drivers of the median $q$ ($q_{med}$). Quiescent galaxies at $z<1$ and $M_{*}>10^{11}M_{\odot}$ are rounder than those at lower masses, consistent with the hypothesis that they have grown significantly through dry merging. The massive quiescent galaxies at higher redshift become flatter, and are as flat as star forming…
Local samples of quiescent galaxies with dynamically measured black hole masses (Mbh) may suffer from an angular resolution-related selection effect, which could bias the observed scaling relations between Mbh and host galaxy properties away from the intrinsic relations. In particular, previous work has shown that the observed Mbh-Mstar (stellar mass) relation is more strongly biased than the Mbh-sigma (velocity dispersion) relation. Local samples of active galactic nuclei (AGN) do not suffer from this selection effect, as in these samples Mbh is estimated from megamasers and/or reverberation …
The UVJ color-color diagram is a popular and efficient method to distinguish between quiescent and star-forming galaxies through their rest-frame $U-V$ vs. $V-J$ colors. Here we explore the information content of this color-color space using the Bayesian inference machine Prospector. We fit the same physical model to two datasets: (i) UVJ fluxes alone, and (ii) full UV-mid IR (MIR) broadband SEDs from the 3D-HST survey. Notably this model uses both nonparametric SFHs and a flexible dust attenuation curve, both of which have the potential to `break' the typical correlations observed in UVJ colo…
We study the evolution of the core (r<1 kpc) and effective (r<r_e) stellar-mass surface densities, in star-forming and quiescent galaxies. Since z=3, both populations occupy distinct, linear relations in log(Sigma_e) and log(Sigma_1) vs. log(M). These structural relations exhibit slopes and scatter that remain almost constant with time while their normalizations decline. For SFGs, the normalization declines by less than a factor of 2 from z=3, in both Sigma_e and Sigma_1. Such mild declines suggest that SFGs build dense cores by growing along these relations. We define this evolution as the st…
We examine the robustness of the color-color selection of quiescent galaxies (QGs) against contamination of dusty star-forming galaxies using the latest submillimeter data. We selected 18,304 QG candidates out to $z\sim$ 3 using the commonly adopted $NUV-r-J$ selection based on the high-quality multi-wavelength COSMOS2015 catalog. Using extremely deep 450 and 850 $μ$m catalogs from the latest JCMT SCUBA-2 Large Programs, S2COSMOS, and STUDIES, as well as ALMA submillimeter, VLA 3 GHz, and $Spitzer$ MIPS 24 $μ$m catalogs, we identified luminous dusty star-forming galaxies among the QG candidate…
The Euclid mission will observe well over a billion galaxies out to $z\sim6$ and beyond. This will offer an unrivalled opportunity to investigate several key questions for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The first step for many of these studies will be the selection of a sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies, as is often done in the literature by using well known colour techniques such as the `UVJ' diagram. However, given the limited number of filters available for the Euclid telescope, the recovery of such rest-frame colours will be challenging. We therefore investigate …
We examine the Fundamental Plane (FP) and mass-to-light ratio ($M/L$) scaling relations using the largest sample of massive quiescent galaxies at $1.5<z<2.5$ to date. The FP ($r_{e}, σ_{e}, I_{e}$) is established using $19$ $UVJ$ quiescent galaxies from COSMOS with $Hubble$ $Space$ $Telescope$ $(HST)$ $H_{F160W}$ rest-frame optical sizes and X-shooter absorption line measured stellar velocity dispersions. For a very massive, ${\rm{log}}(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})>11.26$, subset of 8 quiescent galaxies at $z>2$, from Stockmann et al. (2020), we show that they cannot passively evolve to the local Coma …
We present a comparison of low-J 13CO and CS observations of four different regions in the LMC -- the quiescent Molecular Ridge, 30 Doradus, N159, and N113, all at a resolution of $\sim3$ pc. The regions 30 Dor, N159, and N113 are actively forming massive stars, while the Molecular Ridge is forming almost no massive stars, despite its large reservoir of molecular gas and proximity to N159 and 30 Dor. We segment the emission from each region into hierarchical structures using dendrograms and analyze the sizes, masses, and linewidths of these structures. We find that the Ridge has significantly …
Massive quiescent galaxies at high redshift can shed light on the processes of galaxy mass assembly and quenching of the star formation at early epochs. We present observer-frame color-color diagrams designed to identify candidate quiescent galaxies from z=2.5 up to the highest redshifts, that can be then be selected for spectroscopic follow-up observations. The application to the COSMOS2015 catalog shows that, after refining the selection with SED fitting, the number of massive old quiescent galaxies exceeds the forecast of state-of-the-art semi-analytic models, pointing out the need of an im…
We study structural properties of spectroscopically confirmed massive quiescent galaxies at $z\approx 3$ with one of the first sizeable samples of such sources, made of ten $10.8<\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})<11.3$ galaxies at $2.4 < z < 3.2$ in the COSMOS field whose redshifts and quiescence are confirmed by HST grism spectroscopy. Although affected by a weak bias toward younger stellar populations, this sample is deemed to be largely representative of the majority of the most massive and thus intrinsically rarest quiescent sources at this cosmic time. We rely on targeted HST/WFC3 observations an…
We present a new rest-frame color-color selection method using "synthetic $u_s-g_s$ and $g_s-i_s$'', $(ugi)_s$ colors to identify star-forming and quiescent galaxies. Our method is similar to the widely-used $U-V$ versus $V-J$ ($UVJ$) diagram. However, $UVJ$ suffers known systematics. Spectroscopic campaigns have shown that $UVJ$-selected quiescent samples at $z \gtrsim 3$ include $\sim 10-30\%$ contamination from galaxies with dust-obscured star formation and strong emission lines. Moreover, at $z>3$, $UVJ$ colors are extrapolated because the rest-frame J-band shifts beyond the coverage of th…
Large photometric surveys provide a rich source of observations of quiescent galaxies, including a surprisingly large population at z>1. However, identifying large, but clean, samples of quiescent galaxies has proven difficult because of their near-degeneracy with interlopers such as dusty, star-forming galaxies. We describe a new technique for selecting quiescent galaxies based upon t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), an unsupervised machine learning algorithm for dimensionality reduction. This t-SNE selection provides an improvement both over UVJ, removing interlopers which …
We study the rest-frame optical mass-size relation of bulges and discs from z~2 to z~0 for a complete sample of massive galaxies in the CANDELS fields using 2 component Sérsic models (Dimauro et a. 2018). Discs and star forming galaxies follow similar mass-size relations. The mass-size relation of bulges is less steep than the one of quiescent galaxies (best fit slope of ~ 0.7 for quiescent galaxies against ~ 0.4 for bulges). We find little dependence of the structural properties of massive bulges and discs with the global morphology of galaxies (disc vs. bulge dominated) and the star formatio…
We investigate the dependance of galaxy sizes and star-formation rates (SFRs) on environment using a mass-limited sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies with M>10^9.5 at z=0.92 selected from the NMBS survey. Using the GEEC2 spectroscopic cluster catalog and the accurate photometric redshifts from NMBS, we select quiescent and star-forming cluster (sigma=490 km/s) galaxies within two virial radius, Rvir, intervals of 0.5<Rvir<2 and Rvir<0.5. Galaxies residing outside of 2 Rvir of both the cluster centres and additional candidate over-densities are defined as our field sample. Galaxy stru…
We examine the evolution of the relation between stellar mass surface density, velocity dispersion and half-light radius$-$the stellar mass fundamental plane$-$for quiescent galaxies at $z<0.6$. We measure the local relation from galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the intermediate redshift relation from $\sim500$ quiescent galaxies with stellar masses $10 \lesssim \mathrm{log}(M_\ast/M_\odot) \lesssim 11.5$. Nearly half of the quiescent galaxies in our intermediate redshift sample are compact. After accounting for important selection and systematic effects, the velocity dispersion di…
The general consensus is that LTGs undergo intense star-formation activity, while ETGs are mostly inactive. We question this general rule and investigate the existence of star-forming ETGs and quiescent LTGs in the local Universe. By computing the physical properties of 2,209 such galaxies in the GAMA survey being morphologically classified and using information on their structural properties as well as the density of their local environment, we seek for understanding the differences from their 'typical' counterparts. We separate galaxies into subsets based on their dominant ionising process, …
We present the relation between galaxy structure and spectral type, using a K-selected galaxy sample at 0.5<z<2.0. Based on similarities between the UV-to-NIR spectral energy distributions, we classify galaxies into 32 spectral types. The different types span a wide range in evolutionary phases, and thus -- in combination with available CANDELS/F160W imaging -- are ideal to study the structural evolution of galaxies. Effective radii (R_e) and Sersic parameters (n) have been measured for 572 individual galaxies, and for each type, we determine R_e at fixed stellar mass by correcting for the mas…
We utilize for the first time HST ACS imaging to examine the structural properties of galaxies in the rest-frame U-V versus V-J diagram (i.e., the UVJ diagram) using a sample at 0.6<z<0.9 that reaches a low stellar mass limit (log M/Msun>10.25). The use of the UVJ diagram as a tool to distinguish quiescent galaxies from star forming galaxies (SFGs) is becoming more common due to its ability to separate red quiescent galaxies from reddened SFGs. Quiescent galaxies occupy a small and distinct region of UVJ color space and we find most of them to have concentrated profiles with high Sersic indice…
We investigate structural properties of massive galaxy populations in the central regions of five very massive galaxy clusters at z~1.4-1.7 from the South Pole Telescope Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect survey. We probe the connection between galaxy structure and broad stellar population properties, at stellar masses log(M/Msun)>10.85. We find that quiescent and star-forming cluster galaxy populations are largely dominated by bulge- and disk-dominated sources, respectively, with relative contributions consistent with those of field counterparts. At the same time, the enhanced quiescent galaxy fractio…
Scaling relations between galaxy structures and dynamics have been studied extensively for early and late-type galaxies, both in the local universe and at high redshifts. The abundant differences between the properties of disky and elliptical, or star-forming and quiescent, galaxies seem to be characteristic of the local Universe; such clear distinctions begin to disintegrate as observations of massive galaxies probe higher redshifts. In this Paper, we investigate the existence the mass fundamental plane of all massive galaxies ($σ\gtrsim$ 100 km/s). This work includes local galaxies (0.05<z<0…
A nuclear transient detected in a post-starburst galaxy or other quiescent galaxy with strong Balmer absorption is likely to be a Tidal Disruption Event (TDE). Identifying such galaxies within the planned survey footprint of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)---before a transient is detected---will make TDE classification immediate and follow-up more efficient. Unfortunately, spectra for identifying most such galaxies are unavailable, and simple photometric selection is ineffective; cutting on "green valley" UV/optical/IR colors produces samples that are highly contaminated and incompl…
We present Keck-MOSFIRE H and K spectra for a sample of 24 candidate quiescent galaxies (QGs) at 3<z<4, identified from UVJ colors and photometric redshifts in the ZFOURGE and 3DHST surveys. We obtain spectroscopic redshifts for half of the sample, using absorption or emission lines, and confirm the high accuracy of the photometric redshifts with a median error of 1.2%. Two galaxies turn out to be dusty objects at lower redshifts (z<2.5), and are the only two detected in the sub-mm with ALMA. High equivalent-width [OIII] was observed in two galaxies, contributing up to 30% of the K-band flux a…
We present spatially-resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) 870 $μ$m dust continuum maps of six massive, compact, dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $z\sim2.5$. These galaxies are selected for their small rest-frame optical sizes ($r_{\rm e, F160W}\sim1.6$ kpc) and high stellar-mass densities that suggest that they are direct progenitors of compact quiescent galaxies at $z\sim2$. The deep observations yield high far-infrared (FIR) luminosities of L$_{\rm IR}=10^{12.3-12.8}$ L$_{\odot}$ and star formation rates (SFRs) of SFR$=200-700$ M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, consistent w…
Our goal is to study the evolution of the $B-$band luminosity function (LF) since $z=1$ using ALHAMBRA data. We used the photometric redshift and the $I-$band selection magnitude probability distribution functions (PDFs) of those ALHAMBRA galaxies with $I\leq24$ mag to compute the posterior LF. We statistically studied quiescent and star-forming galaxies using the template information encoded in the PDFs. The LF covariance matrix in redshift-magnitude-galaxy type space was computed, including the cosmic variance. That was estimated from the intrinsic dispersion of the LF measurements in the 48…
We compare three major large-scale hydrodynamical galaxy simulations (EAGLE, Illustris-TNG, and SIMBA) by forward modeling simulated galaxies into observational space and computing the fraction of isolated and quiescent low mass galaxies as a function of stellar mass. Using SDSS as our observational template, we create mock surveys and synthetic spectroscopic and photometric observations of each simulation, adding realistic noise and observational limits. All three simulations show a decrease in the number of quiescent, isolated galaxies in the mass range $\mathrm{M}_* = 10^{9-10} \ \mathrm{M}…
We explore the buildup of quiescent galaxies using a sample of 28,469 massive ($M_\star \ge 10^{11}$M$_\odot$) galaxies at redshifts $1.5<z<3.0$, drawn from a 17.5 deg$^2$ area (0.33 Gpc$^3$ comoving volume at these redshifts). This allows for a robust study of the quiescent fraction as a function of mass at $1.5<z<3.0$ with a sample $\sim$40 times larger at log($M_{\star}$/$\rm M_{\odot}$)$\ge11.5$ than previous studies. We derive the quiescent fraction using three methods: specific star-formation rate, distance from the main sequence, and UVJ color-color selection. All three methods give sim…
Dedicated photometric and spectroscopic surveys have provided unambiguous evidence for a strong stellar mass-size evolution of galaxies within the last 10 Gyr. The likely progenitors of today's most massive galaxies are remarkably small, disky, passive and have already assembled much of their stellar mass at redshift z=2. An in-depth analysis of these objects, however, is currently not feasible due to the lack of high-quality, spatially-resolved photometric and spectroscopic data. In this paper, we present a sample of nearby compact elliptical galaxies (CEGs), which bear resemblance to the mas…
We present structural measurements of 145 spectroscopically selected intermediate-redshift (z$\sim$0.7), massive ($M_\star \sim 10^{11} \ M_\odot$) post-starburst galaxies from the SQuIGG$\vec{L}$E Sample measured using wide-depth Hyper Suprime-Cam i-band imaging. This deep imaging allows us to probe the sizes and structures of these galaxies, which we compare to a control sample of star forming and quiescent galaxies drawn from the LEGA-C Survey. We find that post-starburst galaxies systematically lie $\sim0.1$ dex below the quiescent mass-size (half-light radius) relation, with a scatter of …

We study the connection between active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their host galaxies through cosmic time in the large-scale cosmological IllustrisTNG simulations. We first compare BH properties, i.e. the hard X-ray BH luminosity function, AGN galaxy occupation fraction, and distribution of Eddington ratios, to available observational constraints. The simulations produce a population of BHs in good agreement with observations, but we note an excess of faint AGN in hard X-ray (L_x ~ 10^{43-44} erg/s), and a lower number of bright AGN (L_x>10^{44} erg/s), a conclusion that varies quantitatively b…
We present a sample of 151 massive ($M_* > 10^{10}\mathrm{M_\odot}$) quiescent galaxies at $2 < z < 5$, based on a sophisticated Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting analysis of the CANDELS UDS and GOODS-South fields. Our sample includes a robust sub-sample of 61 objects for which we confidently exclude low-redshift and star-forming solutions. We identify 10 robust objects at $z>3$, of which 2 are at $z>4$. We report formation redshifts, demonstrating that the oldest objects formed at $z > 6$, however individual ages from our photometric data have significant uncertainties, typically …
The mean size ( effective radius $R_e$) of Massive Galaxies (MGs, $M_{\rm star}>10^{11.2}M_\odot$) is observed to increase steadily with cosmic time. It is still unclear whether this trend originates from the size growth of individual galaxies (via, e.g., mergers and/or AGN feedback) or from the inclusion of larger galaxies entering the selection at later epochs (progenitor bias). We here build a data-driven, flexible theoretical framework to probe the structural evolution of MGs. We assign galaxies to dark matter haloes via stellar mass-halo mass (SMHM) relations with varying high-mass slopes…
Using the IllustrisTNG cosmological galaxy formation simulations, we analyze the physical properties of young quiescent galaxies at z=2 with stellar masses above 10^10.5 solar masses. This key population provides an unaltered probe into the evolution of galaxies from star-forming to quiescent and has been recently targeted by several observational studies. Young quiescent galaxies in the simulations do not appear unusually compact, in tension with observations, but they show unique age gradients that are qualitatively consistent with the observed color gradients. In particular, more than half …
Minor mergers have been proposed as the driving mechanism for the size growth of quiescent galaxies with decreasing redshift. The process whereby large star-forming galaxies quench and join the quiescent population at the large size end has also been suggested as an explanation for this size growth. Given the clear association of quenching with clusters, we explore this mechanism by studying the structural properties of 23 spectroscopically identified recently quenched (or "poststarburst" (PSB)) cluster galaxies at $z\sim1$. Despite clear PSB spectral signatures implying rapid and violent quen…
Massive compact systems at 0.2<z<0.6 are the missing link between the predominantly compact population of massive quiescent galaxies at high redshift and their analogs and relics in the local volume. The evolution in number density of these extreme objects over cosmic time is the crucial constraining factor for the models of massive galaxy assembly. We select a large sample of ~200 intermediate-redshift massive compacts from the BOSS spectroscopic dataset by identifying point-like SDSS photometric sources with spectroscopic signatures of evolved redshifted galaxies. A subset of our targets hav…
Our aim is to determine the distribution of stellar population parameters (extinction, age, metallicity, and star formation rate) of quiescent galaxies within the rest-frame stellar mass$-$colour and $UVJ$ colour$-$colour diagrams corrected for extinction up to $z\sim1$. These novel diagrams reduce the contamination in samples of quiescent galaxies owing to dust-reddened galaxies, and they provide useful constraints on stellar population parameters. We set constraints on the stellar population parameters of quiescent galaxies combining the ALHAMBRA multi-filter photo-spectra with our SED-fitti…
The presence of massive, compact, quiescent galaxies at z>2 presents a major challenge for theoretical models of galaxy formation and evolution. Using one of the deepest large public near-IR surveys to date, we investigate in detail the correlations between star formation and galaxy structural parameters (size, stellar mass, and surface density) from z=2 to the present. At all redshifts, massive quiescent galaxies (i.e. those with little or no star formation) occupy the extreme high end of the surface density distribution and follow a tight mass-size correlation, while star-forming galaxies sh…

We analyze stellar age indicators (D$_n$4000 and EW(H$δ$)) and sizes of 467 quiescent galaxies with $M_\ast \geq 10^{10} M_\odot$ at $z\sim0.7$ drawn from DR2 of the LEGA-C survey. Interpreting index variations in terms of equivalent single stellar population age, we find that the median stellar population is younger for larger galaxies at fixed stellar mass. The effect is significant, yet small; the ages of the larger and the smaller subsets differ by only $<500$ Myr, much less than the age variation among individual galaxies ($\sim1.5$ Gyr). At the same time, quiescent galaxies with the stro…
Deep near-infrared photometric surveys are efficient in identifying high-redshift galaxies, however they can be prone to systematic errors in photometric redshift. This is particularly salient when there is limited sampling of key spectral features of a galaxy's spectral energy distribution (SED), such as for quiescent galaxies where the expected age-sensitive Balmer/4000 A break enter the $K$-band at $z>4$. With single filter sampling of this spectral feature, degeneracies between SED models and redshift emerge. A potential solution to this comes from splitting the $K$-band into multiple filt…
We study the growth of the red sequence through the number density and structural evolution of a sample of young and old quiescent galaxies at 0<z<2. The galaxies are selected from the NEWFIRM Medium-Band Survey (NMBS) in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field. We find a large population of massive young recently quenched ("post-starburst") galaxies at z>1 that are almost non-existent at z<1; their number density is 5 x 10^{-5} Mpc^{-3} at z=2, whereas it is a factor of 10 less at z=0.5. The observed number densities of young and old quiescent galaxies at z>1 are consistent with a simple m…
We present the first study of spatially integrated higher-order stellar kinematics over cosmic time. We use deep rest-frame optical spectroscopy of quiescent galaxies at redshifts z=0.05, 0.3 and 0.8 from the SAMI, MAGPI and LEGA-C surveys to measure the excess kurtosis $h_4$ of the stellar velocity distribution, the latter parametrised as a Gauss-Hermite series. Conservatively using a redshift-independent cut in stellar mass ($M_\star = 10^{11}\,{\rm M}_\odot$), and matching the stellar-mass distributions of our samples, we find 7 $σ$ evidence of $h_4$ increasing with cosmic time, from a medi…
Optically-compact star-forming galaxies (SFGs) have been proposed as immediate progenitors of quiescent galaxies, although their origin and nature are debated. Were they formed in slow secular processes or in rapid merger-driven starbursts? Addressing this question would provide fundamental insight into how quenching occurs. We explore the location of the general population of galaxies with respect to fundamental star-forming and structural relations, identify compact SFGs based on their stellar core densities, and study three diagnostics of the burstiness of star formation: 1) Star formation …
We explore the connection between the kinematics, structures and stellar populations of massive galaxies at $0.6<z<1.0$ using the Fundamental Plane (FP). Combining stellar kinematic data from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) survey with structural parameters measured from deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we obtain a sample of 1419 massive ($\log(M_*/M_\odot) >10.5$) galaxies that span a wide range in morphology, star formation activity and environment, and therefore is representative of the massive galaxy population at $z\sim0.8$. We find that quiescent and star-forming …
Aims: The aim of this work is to collect a complete, mass--selected sample of galaxies with very low specific star formation rate, for a comparison with the prediction of recent theoretical models. Method: We use the 24/K flux ratio, complemented by the SED fitting to the full 0.35-8.0 mum spectral distribution, to select quiescent galaxies from z~0.4 to z~4 in the GOODS--MUSIC sample. Our observational selection can be translated into thresholds on the specific star formation rate SFR/M_*, that can be used to compare with the theoretical predictions. Results: We find that, in the framework of…
We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging to study the structural properties of ten of the most massive ($M \geq 10^{11.25}$ Msun) quiescent galaxies (QGs) in the UKIDSS UDS at $2.5<z<3.0$. The low spatial density of these galaxies required targeted WFC3 $H_{160}$ imaging, as such systems are rare in existing surveys like CANDELS. We fit Sersic models to the 2D light profiles and find that the median half-light radius is $R_e \sim 3$ kpc, a factor of $\sim 3$ smaller than QGs with similar masses at $z \sim 0$. Complementing our sample with similarly massive QGs at lower redshifts, we find that the…
In this paper we present a simple color-magnitude selection and obtain a large sample of 33,893 massive quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshifts (1<z<1.5). We choose the longest wavelength available in the Hyper-Supreme-Cam (HSC) deep survey, the Y band and i-Y color, to select the 4000A Balmer jump in passive galaxies to the highest redshift possible within the survey. With the rich multi-wavelength data in the HSC deep fields, we then confirm that the selected galaxies are in the targeted redshift range of 1<z<1.5, lie in the passive region of the UVJ diagram, and have high stellar masse…
