The Euclid mission will observe well over a billion galaxies out to $z\sim6$ and beyond. This will offer an unrivalled opportunity to investigate several key questions for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The first step for many of these studies will be the selection of a sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies, as is often done in the literature by using well known colour techniques such as the `UVJ' diagram. However, given the limited number of filters available for the Euclid telescope, the recovery of such rest-frame colours will be challenging. We therefore investigate the use of observed Euclid colours, on their own and together with ground-based u-band observations, for selecting quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The most efficient colour combination, among the ones tested in this work, consists of the (u-VIS) and (VIS-J) colours. We find that this combination allows users to select a sample of quiescent galaxies complete to above $\sim70\%$ and with less than 15$\%$ contamination at redshifts in the range $0.75<z<1$. For galaxies at high-z or without the u-band complementary observations, the (VIS-Y) and (J-H) colours represent a valid alternative, with $>65\%$ completeness level and contamination below 20$\%$ at $1<z<2$ for finding quiescent galaxies. In comparison, the sample of quiescent galaxies selected with the traditional UVJ technique is only $\sim20\%$ complete at $z<3$, when recovering the rest-frame colours using mock Euclid observations. This shows that our new methodology is the most suitable one when only Euclid bands, along with u-band imaging, are available.
Our aim is to determine the distribution of stellar population parameters (extinction, age, metallicity, and star formation rate) of quiescent galaxies within the rest-frame stellar mass$-$colour and $UVJ$ colour$-$colour diagrams corrected for extinction up to $z\sim1$. These novel diagrams reduce the contamination in samples of quiescent galaxies owing to dust-reddened galaxies, and they provide useful constraints on stellar population parameters. We set constraints on the stellar population parameters of quiescent galaxies combining the ALHAMBRA multi-filter photo-spectra with our SED-fitti…
We analyse the star formation rates (SFRs), colours, and dust extinctions of galaxies in massive (10^12.5-10^13.5 Msun) haloes at z~2 in high-resolution, cosmological zoom-in simulations as part of the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. The simulations do not model feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) but reproduce well the observed relations between stellar and halo mass and between stellar mass and SFR. About half (a third) of the simulated massive galaxies (massive central galaxies) at z~2 have broad-band colours classifying them as 'quiescent', and the fraction of qui…
Our goal is to characterise the dependence of the optical mass-to-light ratio on galaxy colour up to z = 1.5, expanding the redshift range explored in previous work. From the ALHAMBRA redshifts, stellar masses, and rest-frame luminosities provided by the MUFFIT code, we derive the mass-to-light ratio vs. colour relation (MLCR) both for quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The intrinsic relation and its physical dispersion are derived with a Bayesian inference model. The rest-frame i-band mass-to-light ratio of quiescent and star-forming galaxies presents a tight correlation with the rest-frame…
We present a study of the evolution of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a sample of clusters at $0.05 \leq z<0.35$ from the SDSS and WISE with halo masses in the range $6 \times 10^{13}M_\odot$ (massive groups) - $10^{15.5}M_\odot$ (Coma-like clusters). We analyse optical and infrared colours and stellar masses of BCGs as a function of the mass of their host haloes. We find that BCGs are mostly red and quiescent galaxies and that a minority ($\sim 9$\%) of them are star-forming. We find that the optical $g-r$ colours are consistent with those of red sequence galaxies at the same redshifts;…
We investigate the isolated, quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) DGSAT I and its globular cluster (GC) system using two orbits of Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging in the F606W and F814W filters. This is the first study of GCs around a UDG in a low-density environment. DGSAT I was previously found to host an irregular blue low surface brightness clump, that we confirm as very likely belonging to the galaxy rather than being a chance projection, and represents a recent episode of star formation (${\sim}500~\mathrm{Myr}$) that challenges some UDG formation scenarios. We…
We present a sample of 151 massive ($M_* > 10^{10}\mathrm{M_\odot}$) quiescent galaxies at $2 < z < 5$, based on a sophisticated Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting analysis of the CANDELS UDS and GOODS-South fields. Our sample includes a robust sub-sample of 61 objects for which we confidently exclude low-redshift and star-forming solutions. We identify 10 robust objects at $z>3$, of which 2 are at $z>4$. We report formation redshifts, demonstrating that the oldest objects formed at $z > 6$, however individual ages from our photometric data have significant uncertainties, typically …
We measure the colour evolution and quenching time-scales of $z=1.0-1.8$ galaxies across the green valley. We derive rest-frame $NUVrK$ colours and select blue-cloud, green-valley and red-sequence galaxies from the spectral energy distribution modelling of CANDELS GOODS-South and UDS multi-band photometry. Separately, we constrain the star-formation history (SFH) parameters (ages, $τ$) of these galaxies by fitting their deep archival HST grism spectroscopy. We derive the galaxy colour-age relation and show that only rapidly evolving galaxies with characteristic delayed-$τ$ SFH time-scales of $…
We present GALEX far (FUV) and near (NUV) ultraviolet imaging of 34 nearby early-type galaxies from the SAURON representative sample of 48 E/S0 galaxies, all of which have ground-based optical imaging from the MDM Observatory. The surface brightness profiles of nine galaxies show regions with blue UV-optical colours suggesting recent star formation. Five of these show blue integrated UV-optical colours that set them aside in the NUV integrated colour-magnitude relation. They also have other properties confirming they have had recent star formation, in particular H_beta absorption higher than e…
We investigate the origin of the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) followed by early-type cluster galaxies by using a combination of cosmological N-body simulations of cluster of galaxies and a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation (Lagos, Cora & Padilla 2008). Results show good agreement between the general trend of the simulated and observed CMR. However, in many clusters, the most luminous galaxies depart from the linear fit to observed data displaying almost constant colours. With the aim of understanding this behaviour, we analyze the dependence with redshift of the stellar mass contribut…
We construct a parametric SED model which is able to reproduce the average observed SDSS-UKIDSS-WISE quasar colours to within one tenth of a magnitude across a wide range of redshift $(0<z<5)$ and luminosity $(-22>M_i>-29)$. This model is shown to provide accurate predictions for the colours of known quasars which are less luminous than those used to calibrate the model parameters, and also those at higher redshifts $z>5$. Using a single parameter, the model encapsulates an up-to-date understanding of the intra-population variance in the rest-frame ultraviolet and optical emission lines of lum…
The size-mass galaxy distribution is a key diagnostic for galaxy evolution. Massive compact galaxies are potential surviving relics of a high-redshift phase of star formation. Some of these could be nearly unresolved in SDSS imaging and thus not included in galaxy samples. To overcome this, a sample was selected from the combination of SDSS and UKIDSS photometry to r<17.8. This was done using colour-colour selection, and then by obtaining accurate photometric redshifts (photo-z) using scaled flux matching (SFM). Compared to spectroscopic redshifts (spec-z), SFM obtained a 1-sigma scatter of 0.…
Galaxy mass and environment play a major role in the evolution of galaxies. In the transition from star-forming to quenched galaxies, Active galactic nuclei (AGN) have also a principal action. However, the connections between these three actors are still uncertain. In this work we investigate the effects of stellar mass and the large-scale environment (LSS), on the fraction of optical nuclear activity in a population of isolated galaxies, where AGN would not be triggered by recent galaxy interactions or mergers. As a continuation of a previous work, we focus on isolated galaxies to study the e…
We investigate the development of the colour-magnitude re- lation (CMR) of cluster galaxies. This study is carried out using a semi- analytic model of galaxy formation and evolution coupled to a sample of simulated galaxy clusters of different masses, reinforcing the conclusions reached by Jiménez et al. (2009). We compare both simulated and obeserved CMRs in different colour-magnitude planes, finding a very good agreement in all cases. This indicates that model parameters are correctly tuned, giving accurate values of the main properties of galaxies for further use in our study. In the presen…
Understanding the formation and evolution of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) is critical for explaining their wide-ranging properties. However, studies of LSBGs in deep photometric surveys are often hindered by a lack of distance estimates. In this work, we present a new catalogue of 479 LSBGs, identified in deep optical imaging data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). These galaxies are found across a range of environments, from the field to groups. Many are likely to be ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). We see clear evidence for a bimodal population in colour …
We report on the discovery of a z=1.58 mature cluster around the high-redshift radio galaxy 7C1753+6311, first identified in the Clusters Around Radio-Loud AGN survey. Two-thirds of the excess galaxies within the central 1Mpc lie on a red sequence with a colour that is consistent with an average formation redshift of zf~3. We show that 80+/-6% of the red sequence galaxies in the cluster core are quiescent, while the remaining 20% are red due to dusty star formation. We demonstrate that the cluster has an enhanced quiescent galaxy fraction that is three times that of the control field. We also …
Accurate shape measurements are essential to infer cosmological parameters from large area weak gravitational lensing studies. The compact diffraction-limited point-spread function (PSF) in space-based observations is greatly beneficial, but its chromaticity for a broad band observation can lead to new subtle effects that could hitherto be ignored: the PSF of a galaxy is no longer uniquely defined and spatial variations in the colours of galaxies result in biases in the inferred lensing signal. Taking Euclid as a reference, we show that this colourgradient bias (CG bias) can be quantified with…
We examine the evolution of intrinsic u-r colours of galaxies in the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, which has been shown to reproduce the observed redshift z=0.1 colour-magnitude distribution well. The median u-r of star-forming ('blue cloud') galaxies reddens by 1 mag from z=2 to 0 at fixed stellar mass, as their specific star formation rates decrease with time. A red sequence starts to build-up around z=1, due to the quenching of low-mass satellite galaxies at the faint end, and due to the quenching of more massive central galaxies by their active galactic nuclei (AGN) at the…
We perform a comprehensive study of the stellar population properties of quiescent galaxies as a function of size and stellar mass to constrain the physical mechanism governing the stellar mass assembly and the likely evolutive scenarios that explain their growth in size. After selecting all the quiescent galaxies from the ALHAMBRA survey by the dust-corrected stellar mass$-$colour diagram, we built a shared sample of $\sim850$ quiescent galaxies with reliable sizes from the HST. The stellar population properties were retrieved using the SED-fitting code MUFFIT with various sets of composite s…
We aim at constraining the stellar population properties of quiescent galaxies. These properties reveal how these galaxies evolved and assembled since $z\sim1$ up to the present time. Combining the ALHAMBRA multi-filter photo-spectra with the SED-fitting code MUFFIT, we build a complete catalogue of quiescent galaxies via the dust-corrected stellar mass vs colour diagram. This catalogue includes stellar population properties, such as age, metallicity, extinction, stellar mass and photometric redshift, retrieved from the analysis of composited populations based on two independent sets of SSP mo…
The modern merger hypothesis offers a method of forming a new elliptical galaxy through merging two equal-mass, gas-rich disk galaxies fuelling a nuclear starburst followed by efficient quenching and dynamical stabilization. A key prediction of this scenario is a central concentration of young stars during the brief phase of morphological transformation from highly-disturbed remnant to new elliptical galaxy. To test this aspect of the merger hypothesis, we use integral field spectroscopy to track the stellar Balmer absorption and 4000Å break strength indices as a function of galactic radius fo…

We explore the evolution of the Colour-Magnitude Relation (CMR) and Luminosity Function (LF) at 0.4<z<1.3 from the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS) using ~45,000 galaxies with precise spectroscopic redshifts down to i'_AB<22.5 over ~10.32 deg^2 in two fields. From z=0.5 to z=1.3 the LF and CMR are well defined for different galaxy populations and M^*_B evolves by ~1.04(1.09)+/-0.06(0.10) mag for the total (red) galaxy sample. We compare different criteria for selecting early-type galaxies (ETGs): (1) fixed cut in rest-frame (U-V) colours, (2) evolving cut in (U-V) colours, (…
The colour-magnitude diagrams of resolved stellar populations are the best tool to study the star formation histories of the host galactic regions. In this review the method to derive star formation histories by means of synthetic colour-magnitude diagrams is briefly outlined, and the results of its application to resolved galaxies of various morphological types are summarized. It is shown that all the galaxies studied so far were already forming stars at the lookback time reached by the observational data, independently of morphological type and metallicity. Early-type galaxies have formed st…
We study the narrow emission line properties and stellar populations of a sample of 1385 AGN selected to have strong excess emission at mid-infrared wavelengths based on comparing Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer W1-W2 band colours with optical stellar absorption line indicators. Our goal is to understand whether the physical conditions in the interstellar medium of these objects differ from those of local AGN selected by their optical emission line ratios. To enable this comparison, we construct a control sample of 50,000 optically-selected AGN with the same redshifts that do not have stro…
We report an X-ray flare from 3XMM J014528.9+610729, serendipitously detected during the observation of the open star cluster NGC 663. The colour-colour space technique using optical and infrared data reveals the X-ray source as a candidate spiral galaxy. The flare shows fast rise and exponential decay shape with a ratio of the peak and the quiescent count rates of $\sim$60 and duration of $\sim$5.4 ks. The spectrum during the flaring state is well fitted with a combination of thermal ({\sc Apec}) model with a plasma temperature of $\rm{1.3\pm0.1}$ keV and non-thermal ({\sc Power-law}) model w…
The Euclid Space Telescope will provide deep imaging at optical and near-infrared wavelengths, along with slitless near-infrared spectroscopy, across ~15,000 sq deg of the sky. Euclid is expected to detect ~12 billion astronomical sources, facilitating new insights into cosmology, galaxy evolution, and various other topics. To optimally exploit the expected very large data set, there is the need to develop appropriate methods and software. Here we present a novel machine-learning based methodology for selection of quiescent galaxies using broad-band Euclid I_E, Y_E, J_E, H_E photometry, in com…
The transformation of late-type galaxies has been suggested as the origin of early-type dwarf galaxies in galaxy clusters. Venhola et al. analysed correlations between colour and surface brightness for galaxies in the Fornax cluster binned by luminosity or stellar mass. In the bins with $M_\star<10^8 {\rm M}_\odot$, the authors identified a correlation of redness with fainter surface brightness and interpreted it as a consequence of the quenching of star formation by ram pressure stripping in the dwarf galaxies. We carry out a corresponding analysis for the Virgo cluster and find great similar…
We present a catalogue of bulgeless galaxies, which includes 19225 objects selected in four of the deepest, largest multi-wavelength datasets available -- COSMOS, AEGIS, GEMS and GOODS -- at intermediate redshift ($0.4 \leq z \leq 1.0$). The morphological classification was provided by the Advanced Camera for Surveys General Catalogue (ACS-GC), which used publicly available data obtained with the ACS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. Rest-frame photometric quantities were derived using kcorrect. We analyse the properties of the sample and the evolution of pure-disc systems with redshif…
We present Star Formation Histories (SFHs) for a sample of 104 massive (stellar mass M > 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) quiescent galaxies (MQGs) at $z$=1.0-1.5 from the analysis of spectro-photometric data from the SHARDS and HST/WFC3 G102 and G141 surveys of the GOODS-N field, jointly with broad-band observations from ultraviolet (UV) to far-infrared (Far-IR). The sample is constructed on the basis of rest-frame UVJ colours and specific star formation rates (sSFR=SFR/Mass). The Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of each galaxy are compared to models assuming a delayed exponentially declining SFH. …
Cosmology and galaxy evolution studies with LSST, \Euclid, and {\it Roman}, will require accurate redshifts for the detected galaxies. In this study, we present improved photometric redshift estimates for galaxies using a template library that populates three-color space and is constrained by \HST/CANDELS photometry. For the training sample, we use a sample of galaxies having photometric redshifts which allows us to train on a large, unbiased galaxy sample having deep, unconfused photometry at optical-to-mid infrared wavelengths. Galaxies in the training sample are assigned to cubes in three-d…

Using GALEX, UVOT and optical photometry, we explore the prevalence and strength of the UV-upturn in the spectra of quiescent early type galaxies in several nearby clusters. Even for galaxies with completely passive optical colours, there is a large spread in vacuum UV colour consistent with almost all having some UV upturn component. Combining GALEX and UVOT data below 3000Å, we generate for the first time comparatively detailed UV SEDs for Coma cluster galaxies. Fitting the UV upturn component with a blackbody, twenty six of these show a range of characteristic temperatures (10000--21000K) f…
The distribution of galaxies on a colour-magnitude diagram reveals a bimodality, featuring a passively evolving red sequence and a star-forming blue cloud. The region between these two, the Green Valley (GV), represents a fundamental transition where quenching processes operate. We exploit an alternative definition of the GV using the 4,000 Angstrom break strength, an indicator that is more resilient than colour to dust attenuation. We compare and contrast our GV definition with the traditional one, based on dust-corrected colour, making use of data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our GV se…
We reliably extend the stellar mass-size relation over $0.2\leq z \leq2$ to low stellar mass galaxies by combining the depth of Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) with the large volume covered by CANDELS. Galaxies are simultaneously modelled in multiple bands using the tools developed by the MegaMorph project, allowing robust size (i.e., half-light radius) estimates even for small, faint, and high redshift galaxies. We show that above 10$^7$M$_\odot$, star-forming galaxies are well represented by a single power law on the mass-size plane over our entire redshift range. Conversely, the stellar mass-s…
Through the modelling of near-infrared photometry of star plus disk systems with the codes BEDISK/BERAY, we successfully describe the WISE photometric characteristics of Be stars in five young open clusters, NGC 663, NGC 869, NGC 884, NGC 3766 and NGC 4755, broadly studied in the literature. WISE photometry allows previously known Be stars to be detected and to find new Be candidates which could be confirmed spectroscopically. The location of Be stars in the WISE colour-magnitude diagram, separates them in two groups; active (Be stars hosting a developed circumstellar disk) and quiescent objec…
The most evident features of colour-magnitude diagrams of galaxies are the red sequence of quiescent galaxies, extending up to the brightest elliptical galaxies, and the blue cloud of star-forming galaxies, which is truncated at a luminosity L~L*. The truncation of the blue cloud indicates that in the most massive systems star formation must be quenched. For this to happen the virial-temperature galactic gas must be kept hot and any accreted cold gas must be heated. The elimination of accreted cold gas can be due to thermal evaporation by the hot interstellar medium, which in turn is prevented…
The Complete Calibration of the Colour-Redshift Relation survey (C3R2) is a spectroscopic effort involving ESO and Keck facilities designed to empirically calibrate the galaxy colour-redshift relation - P(z|C) to the Euclid depth (i_AB=24.5) and is intimately linked to upcoming Stage IV dark energy missions based on weak lensing cosmology. The aim is to build a spectroscopic calibration sample that is as representative as possible of the galaxies of the Euclid weak lensing sample. In order to minimise the number of spectroscopic observations to fill the gaps in current knowledge of the P(z|C),…
We measure the rate of environmentally-driven star formation quenching in galaxies at $z\sim 1$, using eleven massive ($M\approx 2\times10^{14}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$) galaxy clusters spanning a redshift range $1.0<z<1.4$ from the GOGREEN sample. We identify three different types of transition galaxies: "green valley" (GV) galaxies identified from their rest-frame $(NUV-V)$ and $(V-J)$ colours; "blue quiescent" (BQ) galaxies, found at the blue end of the quiescent sequence in $(U-V)$ and $(V-J)$ colour; and spectroscopic post-starburst (PSB) galaxies. We measure the abundance of these galaxies as …

The Spitzer Matching Survey of the UltraVISTA Ultra-deep Stripes (SMUVS) has obtained the largest ultra-deep Spitzer maps to date in a single field of the sky. We considered the sample of about 66,000 SMUVS sources at $z=2-6$ to investigate the evolution of dusty and non-dusty galaxies with stellar mass through the analysis of the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF). We further divide our non-dusty galaxy sample with rest-frame optical colours to isolate red quiescent (`passive') galaxies. At each redshift, we identify a characteristic stellar mass in the GSMF above which dusty galaxies domina…
We study Red Misfits, a population of red, star-forming galaxies in the local Universe. We classify galaxies based on inclination-corrected optical colours and specific star formation rates derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. Although the majority of blue galaxies are star-forming and most red galaxies exhibit little to no ongoing star formation, a small but significant population of galaxies ($\sim$11 per cent at all stellar masses) are classified as red in colour yet actively star-forming. We explore a number of properties of these galaxies and demonstrate that Red Misf…
The classification of the host galaxies of the radio sources in the 25 deg$^2$ ultimate XMM extragalactic survey south field (XXL-S) is presented. XXL-S was surveyed at 2.1 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and is thus far the largest area radio survey conducted down to rms flux densities of $σ\sim 41$ $μ$Jy beam$^{-1}$. Of the 6287 radio sources in XXL-S, 4758 (75.7%) were cross-matched to an optical counterpart using the likelihood ratio technique. There are 1110 spectroscopic redshifts and 3648 photometric redshifts available for the counterparts, of which 99.4% exist ou…
We present a new method to classify the broad band optical-NIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies using three shape parameters (super-colours) based on a Principal Component Analysis of model SEDs. As well as providing a compact representation of the wide variety of SED shapes, the method allows for easy visualisation of information loss and biases caused by the incomplete sampling of the rest-frame SED as a function of redshift. We apply the method to galaxies in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey with 0.9<z<1.2, and confirm our classifications by stacking rest-frame optical spectra f…
