我们证实,该尺寸差异由质量最高的子族群(log($M_*$/$M_{\u2299}$)>11)主导,当将样本限定为中等质量星系(10.4<log($M_*$/$M_{\u2299}$)<11)时,这种差异不再存在。
We present a study of the growth of the quiescent galaxy population between 0.5 < z < 3 by tracing the number density and structural evolution of a sample of 4518 old and 583 young quiescent galaxies with log($M_*$/$M_{\odot}$)>10.4, selected from the COSMOS2020 catalog with complementary HST/F160W imaging from the 3D-DASH survey. Among the quiescent population at z$\sim$2, roughly 50% are recently quenched galaxies; these young quiescent galaxies become increasingly rare towards lower redshift, supporting the idea that the peak epoch of massive galaxy quenching occurred at z>2. Our data show that while the effective half-light radii of quiescent galaxies generally increases with time, young quiescent galaxies are significantly smaller than their older counterparts at the same redshift. In this work we investigate the connection between this size difference and other structural properties, including axis ratios, color gradients, stellar mass, and the intrinsic scatter in effective radii. We demonstrate that the size difference is driven by the most massive sub-population (log($M_*$/$M_{\odot}$)>11) and does not persist when restricting the sample to intermediate mass galaxies (10.4<log($M_*$/$M_{\odot}$)<11). Interestingly, the intrinsic scatter in physical size shows a strong co-evolution over the investigated time period and peaks around z$\sim$2 for both populations, only diverging at z < 1. Taken together, and assuming we are not missing a significant population of lower surface brightness galaxies, while the formation and quenching mechanisms that dominate at higher redshifts yield compact remnants, multiple evolutionary pathways may explain the diverse morphologies of galaxies that quench at z<1.
We present the $H_{160}$ morphological catalogs for the COSMOS-DASH survey, the largest area near-IR survey using HST-WFC3 to date. Utilizing the "Drift And SHift" observing technique for HST-WFC3 imaging, the COSMOS-DASH survey imaged approximately 0.5 deg$^2$ of the UltraVISTA deep stripes (0.7 deg$^2$ when combined with archival data). Global structural parameters are measured for 51,586 galaxies within COSMOS-DASH using GALFIT (excluding the CANDELS area) with detection using a deep multi-band HST image. We recover consistent results with those from the deeper 3D-HST morphological catalogs…
We present COSMOS-Drift And SHift (DASH), a Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 imaging survey of the COSMOS field in the H_160 filter. The survey comprises 456 individual WFC3 pointings corresponding to an area of 0.49 deg^2 (0.66 deg^2 when including archival data) and reaches a 5 point-source limit of H_160 =25.1 (0".3 aperture). COSMOS-DASH is the widest HST/WFC3 imaging survey in H_160 filter, tripling the extragalactic survey area in the near-infrared at HST resolution. We make the reduced H_160 mosaic available to the community. We use this dataset to measure the sizes of 162 galaxies with log(…

When investigating the sizes of galaxies it is standard practice to use the half-light radius, $r_{50}$. Here we explore the effects of the size definition on the distribution of galaxies in the size -- stellar mass plane. Specifically, we consider $r_{20}$ and $r_{80}$, the radii that contain 20% and 80% of a galaxy's total luminosity, as determined from a Sersic profile fit, for galaxies in the 3D-HST/CANDELS and COSMOS-DASH surveys. These radii are calculated from size catalogs based on a simple calculation assuming a Sersic profile. We find that the size-mass distributions for $r_{20}$ and…
The mean size ( effective radius $R_e$) of Massive Galaxies (MGs, $M_{\rm star}>10^{11.2}M_\odot$) is observed to increase steadily with cosmic time. It is still unclear whether this trend originates from the size growth of individual galaxies (via, e.g., mergers and/or AGN feedback) or from the inclusion of larger galaxies entering the selection at later epochs (progenitor bias). We here build a data-driven, flexible theoretical framework to probe the structural evolution of MGs. We assign galaxies to dark matter haloes via stellar mass-halo mass (SMHM) relations with varying high-mass slopes…
Scaling relations between galaxy structures and dynamics have been studied extensively for early and late-type galaxies, both in the local universe and at high redshifts. The abundant differences between the properties of disky and elliptical, or star-forming and quiescent, galaxies seem to be characteristic of the local Universe; such clear distinctions begin to disintegrate as observations of massive galaxies probe higher redshifts. In this Paper, we investigate the existence the mass fundamental plane of all massive galaxies ($σ\gtrsim$ 100 km/s). This work includes local galaxies (0.05<z<0…
We use the EAGLE cosmological simulations to perform a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the $z=0.1$ Fundamental Plane (FP), the tight relation between galaxy size, mass and velocity dispersion. We first measure the total mass and velocity dispersion (including both random and rotational motions) within the effective radius to show that simulated galaxies obey a total mass FP that is very close to the virial relation ($<10\%$ deviation), indicating that the effects of non-homology are weak. When we instead use the stellar mass, we find a strong deviation from the virial plane, which is …
We examine the relation between surface brightness, velocity dispersion and size$-$the fundamental plane$-$for quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshifts in the COSMOS field. The COSMOS sample consists of $\sim150$ massive quiescent galaxies with an average velocity dispersion $σ\sim 250$ km s$^{-1}$ and redshifts between $0.2<z<0.8$. More than half of the galaxies in the sample are compact. The COSMOS galaxies exhibit a tight relation ($\sim0.1$ dex scatter) between surface brightness, velocity dispersion and size. At a fixed combination of velocity dispersion and size, the COSMOS galaxies …

We investigate the stellar populations for a sample of 24 quiescent galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 using deep rest-frame optical spectra obtained with Keck MOSFIRE. By fitting templates simultaneously to the spectroscopic and photometric data, and exploring a variety of star formation histories, we obtain robust measurements of median stellar ages and residual levels of star formation. After subtracting the stellar templates, the stacked spectrum reveals the Halpha and [NII] emission lines, providing an upper limit on the ongoing star formation rate of 0.9 +/- 0.1 Msun/yr. By combining the MOSFIRE …
The presence of massive quiescent galaxies at high redshifts is still a challenge for most models of galaxy formation. The aim of this work is to compare the observed number density and properties of these galaxies with the predictions of state-of-the-art models. The sample of massive quiescent galaxies has been selected from the COSMOS2015 photometric catalogue with $z_{\rm phot}\geq 2.5$, $\log (M_*/M_\odot)\geq 10.5$ and $\log(\mathrm{sSFR\,[yr^{-1}]})\le -11$. The photometric SEDs of the selected galaxies have been thoroughly analyzed based on different stellar population synthesis models.…
We present a spectro-photometric study of a mass-complete sample of quiescent galaxies at $1.0 < z < 1.3$ with $\mathrm{log_{10}}(M_{\star}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}}) \geq 10.3$ drawn from the VANDELS survey, exploring the relationship between stellar mass, age and star-formation history. Within our sample of 114 galaxies, we derive a stellar-mass vs stellar-age relation with a slope of $1.20^{+0.28}_{-0.27}$ Gyr per decade in stellar mass. When combined with recent literature results, we find evidence that the slope of this relation remains consistent over the redshift interval $0<z<4$. The galaxies…
We analyze stellar age indicators (D$_n$4000 and EW(H$δ$)) and sizes of 467 quiescent galaxies with $M_\ast \geq 10^{10} M_\odot$ at $z\sim0.7$ drawn from DR2 of the LEGA-C survey. Interpreting index variations in terms of equivalent single stellar population age, we find that the median stellar population is younger for larger galaxies at fixed stellar mass. The effect is significant, yet small; the ages of the larger and the smaller subsets differ by only $<500$ Myr, much less than the age variation among individual galaxies ($\sim1.5$ Gyr). At the same time, quiescent galaxies with the stro…
We analyze the Illustris-1 hydrodynamical cosmological simulation to explore the stellar velocity dispersion of quiescent galaxies as an observational probe of dark matter halo velocity dispersion and mass. Stellar velocity dispersion is proportional to dark matter halo velocity dispersion for both central and satellite galaxies. The dark matter halos of central galaxies are in virial equilibrium and thus the stellar velocity dispersion is also proportional to dark matter halo mass. This proportionality holds even when a line-of-sight aperture dispersion is calculated in analogy to observation…
We examine the relation between stellar mass and central stellar velocity dispersion-the M-sigma relation-for massive quiescent galaxies at z<0.7. We measure the local relation from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the intermediate redshift relation from the Smithsonian Hectospec Lensing Survey. Both samples are highly complete (>85%) and we consistently measure the stellar mass and velocity dispersion for the two samples. The M-sigma relation and its scatter are independent of redshift with sigma ~ M^0.3 for M>10^10.3 M_solar. The measured slope of the M-sigma relation is the same as the scal…
We explore the connection between the kinematics, structures and stellar populations of massive galaxies at $0.6<z<1.0$ using the Fundamental Plane (FP). Combining stellar kinematic data from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) survey with structural parameters measured from deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we obtain a sample of 1419 massive ($\log(M_*/M_\odot) >10.5$) galaxies that span a wide range in morphology, star formation activity and environment, and therefore is representative of the massive galaxy population at $z\sim0.8$. We find that quiescent and star-forming …
We present new measurements of the clustering of stellar mass-complete samples of $\sim40,000$ SDSS galaxies at $z\sim0.03$ as a joint function of stellar mass and specific star formation rate (sSFR). Our results confirm what Coil et al. (2017) find at $z\sim0.7$: galaxy clustering is a stronger function of sSFR at fixed stellar mass than of stellar mass at fixed sSFR. We also find that galaxies above the star-forming main sequence (SFMS) with higher sSFR are less clustered than galaxies below the SFMS with lower sSFR, at a given stellar mass. A similar trend is present for quiescent galaxies.…
We study the evolution of the core (r<1 kpc) and effective (r<r_e) stellar-mass surface densities, in star-forming and quiescent galaxies. Since z=3, both populations occupy distinct, linear relations in log(Sigma_e) and log(Sigma_1) vs. log(M). These structural relations exhibit slopes and scatter that remain almost constant with time while their normalizations decline. For SFGs, the normalization declines by less than a factor of 2 from z=3, in both Sigma_e and Sigma_1. Such mild declines suggest that SFGs build dense cores by growing along these relations. We define this evolution as the st…
Tracing the emergence of the massive quiescent galaxy (QG) population requires the build-up of reliable quenched samples. We present Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/G141 grism spectra of 10 quiescent galaxy candidates selected at $2.5<z<3.5$ in the COSMOS field. Spectroscopic confirmation for the whole sample is obtained within 1-3 orbits based on the presence of strong spectral breaks and Balmer absorption lines. Combining their spectra with optical to near-IR photometry, star-forming solutions are formally rejected for the entire sample. Broad spectral indices are consistent with the presence of…
We present structural measurements of 145 spectroscopically selected intermediate-redshift (z$\sim$0.7), massive ($M_\star \sim 10^{11} \ M_\odot$) post-starburst galaxies from the SQuIGG$\vec{L}$E Sample measured using wide-depth Hyper Suprime-Cam i-band imaging. This deep imaging allows us to probe the sizes and structures of these galaxies, which we compare to a control sample of star forming and quiescent galaxies drawn from the LEGA-C Survey. We find that post-starburst galaxies systematically lie $\sim0.1$ dex below the quiescent mass-size (half-light radius) relation, with a scatter of …
Stellar population synthesis models can now reproduce the photometry of old stellar systems (age $>$ 2 Gyr) in the near-infrared (NIR) bands at 3.4 and 4.6$μ$m (WISE W1 $\&$ W2 or IRAC 1 $\&$ 2). In this paper we derive stellar mass-to-light ratios for these and optical bands, and confirm that the NIR M/L shows dramatically reduced sensitivity to both age and metallicity compared to optical bands, and further, that this behavior leads to significantly more robust stellar masses for quiescent galaxies with [Fe/H] > -0.5 regardless of star formation history (SFH). We then use realistic early-typ…

Using the UltraVISTA catalogs, we investigate the evolution in the 11.4~Gyr since $z=3$ of the progenitors of local ultra-massive galaxies ($\log{(M_{\rm star}/M_{\odot})}\approx11.8$; UMGs), providing a complete and consistent picture of how the most massive galaxies at $z=0$ have assembled. By selecting the progenitors with a semi-empirical approach using abundance matching, we infer a growth in stellar mass of 0.56$^{+0.35}_{-0.25}$ dex, 0.45$^{+0.16}_{-0.20}$~dex, and 0.27$^{+0.08}_{-0.12}$ dex from $z=3$, $z=2$, and $z=1$, respectively, to $z=0$. At $z<1$, the progenitors of UMGs constitu…
We explore the relation between the dynamical mass-to-light ratio ($M/L$) and rest-frame color of massive quiescent galaxies out to z~2. We use a galaxy sample with measured stellar velocity dispersions in combination with Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based multi-band photometry. Our sample spans a large range in $\log M_{dyn}/L_{g}$ (of 1.6~dex) and $\log M_{dyn}/L_{K}$ (of 1.3~dex). There is a strong, approximately linear correlation between the $M/L$ for different wavebands and rest-frame color. The root-mean-scatter scatter in $\log~M_{dyn}/L$ residuals implies that it is possible to …
The Fundamental Plane (FP) of early-type galaxies, relating the effective radius, velocity dispersion, and surface brightness, has long been recognized as a unique tool for analyzing galaxy structure and evolution. With the discovery of distant quiescent galaxies and the introduction of high sensitivity near-infrared spectrographs, it is now possible to explore the FP out to z~2. In this Letter we study the evolution of the FP out to z~2 using kinematic measurements of massive quiescent galaxies ($M_{*}>10^{11} M_{\odot}$). We find preliminary evidence for the existence of an FP out to z~2. Th…
Radial mass-to-light ratio gradients cause the half-mass and half-light radii of galaxies to differ, potentially biasing studies that use half-light radii. Here we present the largest catalog to date of galaxy half-mass radii at z > 1: 7,006 galaxies in the CANDELS fields at 1.0 < z < 2.5. The sample includes both star-forming and quiescent galaxies with stellar masses 9.0 < log(M_* / M_\odot) < 11.5. We test three methods for calculating half-mass radii from multi-band PSF-matched HST imaging: two based on spatially-resolved SED modeling, and one that uses a rest-frame color profile. All thre…

We study the slope, intercept, and scatter of the color-magnitude and color-mass relations for a sample of ten infrared red-sequence-selected clusters at z ~ 1. The quiescent galaxies in these clusters formed the bulk of their stars above z ~ 3 with an age spread Δt ~ 1 Gyr. We compare UVJ color-color and spectroscopic-based galaxy selection techniques, and find a 15% difference in the galaxy populations classified as quiescent by these methods. We compare the color-magnitude relations from our red-sequence selected sample with X-ray- and photometric- redshift-selected cluster samples of simil…
We present the main sequence for all galaxies and star-forming galaxies for a sample of 28,469 massive ($M_\star \ge 10^{11}$M$_\odot$) galaxies at cosmic noon ($1.5 < z < 3.0$), uniformly selected from a 17.5 deg$^2$ area (0.33 Gpc$^3$ comoving volume at these redshifts). Our large sample allows for a novel approach to investigating the galaxy main sequence that has not been accessible to previous studies. We measure the main sequence in small mass bins in the SFR-M$_{\star}$ plane without assuming a functional form for the main sequence. With a large sample of galaxies in each mass bin, we i…
It is well established that (1) star-forming galaxies follow a relation between their star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass (M$_{\star}$), the "star-formation sequence", and (2) the SFRs of galaxies correlate with their structure, where star-forming galaxies are less concentrated than quiescent galaxies at fixed mass. Here, we consider whether the scatter and slope of the star-formation sequence is correlated with systematic variations in the Sersic indices, $n$, of galaxies across the SFR-M$_{\star}$ plane. We use a mass-complete sample of 23,848 galaxies at $0.5<z<2.5$ selected from the…
We select galaxies from the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations ($M_*>10^9~\rm M_\odot$ at $0\le z\le2$) and characterize the shapes and evolutions of their UVJ and star-formation rate -- stellar mass (SFR-$M_*$) diagrams. We quantify the systematic uncertainties related to different criteria to classify star-forming vs. quiescent galaxies, different SFR estimates, and by accounting for the star formation measured within different physical apertures. The TNG model returns the observed features of the UVJ diagram at $z\leq2$, with a clear separation between two classes of galaxies. It also …
Accurate measurements of galaxy masses and sizes are key to tracing galaxy evolution over time. Cosmological zoom-in simulations provide an ideal test bed for assessing the recovery of galaxy properties from observations. Here, we utilize galaxies with $M_*\sim10^{10}-10^{11.5}M_{\odot}$ at z~1.7-2 from the MassiveFIRE cosmological simulation suite, part of the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. Using mock multi-band images, we compare intrinsic galaxy masses and sizes to observational estimates. We find that observations accurately recover stellar masses, with a slight average…
Using integral field spectroscopic data of 24 nearby spiral galaxies obtained with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), we derive empirical calibrations to determine the metallicity of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) and/or of the low-ionisation emission region (LI(N)ER) in passive regions of galaxies. To do so, we identify a large number of HII--DIG/LIER pairs that are close enough to be chemically homogeneous and we measure the metallicity difference of each DIG/LIER region relative to its HII region companion when applying the same strong line calibrations. The O3N2 diagnostic ($=$lo…
We constrain the stellar population properties of a sample of 52 massive galaxies, with stellar mass log Ms>10.5, over the redshift range 0.5<z<2 by use of observer-frame optical and near-infrared slitless spectra from HST's ACS and WFC3 grisms. The deep exposures (~100 ks) allow us to target individual spectra of massive galaxies to F160W=22.5AB. Our spectral fitting approach uses a set of six base models adapted to the redshift and spectral resolution of each observation, and fits the weights of the base models, including potential dust attenuation, via an MCMC method. Our sample comprises a…
