We consider the entanglement entropy of an arbitrary subregion in a system of $N$ non-relativistic fermions in $2+1$ dimensions in Lowest Landau Level (LLL) states. Using the connection of these states to those of an auxiliary $1+1$ dimensional fermionic system, we derive an expression for the leading large-$N$ contribution in terms of the expectation value of the phase space density operator in $1+1$ dimensions. For appropriate subregions the latter can replaced by its semiclassical Thomas-Fermi value, yielding expressions in terms of explicit integrals which can be evaluated analytically. We show that the leading term in the entanglement entropy is a perimeter law with a shape independent coefficient. Furthermore, we obtain analytic expressions for additional contributions from sharp corners on the entangling curve. Both the perimeter and the corner pieces are in good agreement with existing calculations for special subregions. Our results are relevant to the integer quantum Hall effect problem, and to the half-BPS sector of $\mathcal N=4$ Yang Mills theory on $S^3$. In this latter context, the entanglement we consider is an entanglement in target space. We comment on possible implications to gauge-gravity duality.
We analyze the spectrum of the N=(2,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg theory in two dimensions with superpotential W=X^{n+2}-lambda X^2. We find the full BPS spectrum of this theory by exploiting the direct connection between the UV and IR limits of the theory. The computation utilizes results from the Picard-Lefschetz theory of singularities and its extension to boundary singularities. The additional fact that this theory is integrable requires that the BPS states do not close under scattering. This observation fixes the masses of non-BPS states as well.
In this paper the zero modes of fluctuation of cylindrically symmetric self-dual vortices are analyzed and described in full detail. These BPS topological defects arise at the critical point between Type II and Type I superconductors, or, equivalently, when the masses of the Higgs particle and the vector boson in the Abelian Higgs model are equal. In addition, novel bound states of Higss and vector bosons trapped by the self-dual vortices at their core are found and investigated.
We study domain walls in two different extensions of super Yang--Mills characterized by the absence of a logarithmic term in their effective superpotential. The models, defined by the usual gaugino condensate and an extra field Y, give different patterns of domain walls despite both leading to the same effective limit for heavy Y, i.e. the Veneziano--Yankielowicz effective Lagrangian of super Yang--Mills. We explain the origin of those differences and also give a physical motivation for introducing the field Y.
We describe how categorical BPS data including chain complexes of solitons, CPT pairings, and interior amplitudes jump across a wall of marginal stability in two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ models. We show that our jump formulas hold if and only if the $A_{\infty}$-categories of half-BPS branes constructed on either side of the wall are homotopy equivalent. These results can be viewed as categorical enhancements of the Cecotti-Vafa wall-crossing formula.
Considering the system of interacting electrons in the lowest Landau level we show that the corresponding four-fermion Hamiltonian is invariant with respect to the local area-preserving transformations. Testing a certain class of interaction potentials, we find that this symmetry is universal with respect to a concrete type of potentials.
One of the most celebrated works of Professor Madore is the introduction of fuzzy sphere. I briefly review how the fuzzy two-sphere and its higher dimensional cousins are realized in the (spherical) Landau models in non-Abelian monopole backgrounds. For extracting quantum geometry from the Landau models, we evaluate the matrix elements of the coordinates of spheres in the lowest and higher Landau levels. For the lowest Landau level, the matrix geometry is identified as the geometry of fuzzy sphere. Meanwhile for the higher Landau levels, the obtained quantum geometry turns out to be a nested m…
We study black hole attractor equations for one-(complex structure)modulus Calabi-Yau spaces which are the mirror dual of Fermat Calabi-Yau threefolds (CY_{3}s). When exploring non-degenerate solutions near the Landau-Ginzburg point of the moduli space of such 4-dimensional compactifications, we always find two species of extremal black hole attractors, depending on the choice of the Sp(4,Z) symplectic charge vector, one 1/2-BPS (which is always stable, according to general results of special Kahler geometry) and one non-BPS. The latter turns out to be stable (local minimum of the ``effective …
We develop finite-dimensional versions of the quantum error-correcting codes proposed by Albert, Covey, and Preskill (ACP) for continuous-variable quantum computation on configuration spaces with nonabelian symmetry groups. Our codes can be realized by a charged particle in a Landau level on a spherical geometry -- in contrast to the planar Landau level realization of the qudit codes of Gottesman, Kitaev, and Preskill (GKP) -- or more generally by spin coherent states. Our quantum error-correction scheme is inherently approximate, and the encoded states may be easier to prepare than those of G…
Chern-Simons type gauge field is generated by the means of the singular area preserving transformations in the lowest Landau level of electrons forming fractional quantum Hall state. Dynamics is governed by the system of constraints which correspond to the Gauss law in the non-commutative Chern-Simons gauge theory and to the lowest Landau level condition in the picture of composite fermions. Physically reasonable solution to this constraints corresponds to the Laughlin state. It is argued that the model leads to the non-commutative Chern-Simons theory of the QHE and composite fermions.
The Lowest Landau Level on a torus is studied. The dimension of the many-body Hilbert space is obtained and is found to be different from the formula given by Haldane. Our result can be tested in numerical investigations of the low-energy spectrum of fractional quantum Hall states on a torus.
We develop a low-energy effective field theory of a two-dimensional bosonic superfluid on the lowest Landau level at zero temperature and identify a Berry term that governs the dynamics of coarse-grained superfluid degrees of freedom. For an infinite vortex crystal we compute how the Berry term affects the low-energy spectrum of soft collective Tkachenko oscillations and non-dissipative Hall responses of the particle number current and stress tensor. This term gives rise to a quadratic in momentum term in the Hall conductivity, but does not generate a non-dissipative Hall viscosity.
We construct a $W_{\infty}$ gauge field theory of electrons in the lowest Landau level. For this purpose we introduce an external gauge potential $\cal A $ such that its $W_{\infty}$ gauge transformations cancel against the gauge transformation of the electron field. We then show that the electromagnetic interactions of electrons in the lowest Landau level are obtained through a non-linear realization of $\cal A$ in terms of the $U(1)$ gauge potential $A^{\m}$. As applications we derive the effective Lagrangians for circular droplets and for the $\n =1$ quantum Hall system.
By considering the area preserving geometric transformations in the configuration space of electrons moving in the lowest Landau level (LLL) we arrive at the Chern-Simons type Lagrangian. Imposing the LLL condition, we get a scheme with the complex gauge fields and transformations. Quantum theory for the matter field in LLL is considered and formal expressions for Read's operator and Laughlin wave function are presented in the second quantized form.
This paper presents a case study of the effects of increasing the order of a Ginzburg-Landau type expansion, by using the well known Gross-Neveu model in 1+1 dimensions as a test case. It is found that as the order of expansion increases, the predicted phase diagram increasingly resembles the known exact phase diagram. Finally, some properties of arbitrary large order phase diagrams are examined.
Using the recently developed approach to quantum Hall physics based on Newton-Cartan geometry, we consider the hydrodynamics of an interacting system on the lowest Landau level. We rephrase the non-relativistic fluid equations of motion in a manner that manifests the spacetime diffeomorphism invariance of the underlying theory. In the massless (or lowest Landau level) limit, the fluid obeys a force-free constraint which fixes the charge current. An entropy current analysis further constrains the energy response, determining four transverse response functions in terms of only two: an energy mag…
We construct a field theory for anyons in the lowest Landau level starting from the $N$-particle description, and discuss the connection to the full field theory of anyons defined using a statistical gauge potential. The theory is transformed to free form, with the fields defined on the circle and satisfying modified commutation relations. The Fock space of the anyons is discussed, and the theory is related to that of edge excitations of an anyon droplet in a harmonic oscillator well.
The low energy effective theory of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on S^3 with an R-symmetry chemical potential is shown to be the lowest Landau level system. This theory is a holomorphic complex matrix quantum mechanics. When the value of the chemical potential is not far below the mass of the scalars, the states of the effective theory consist only of the half-BPS states. The theory is solved by the operator method and by utilizing the lowest Landau level projection prescription for the value of the chemical potential less than or equal to the mass of the scalars. When the chemical potential is …
This paper is a review of monopoles, lowest Landau level, fuzzy spheres, and their mutual relations. The Hopf maps of division algebras provide a prototype relation between monopoles and fuzzy spheres. Generalization of complex numbers to Clifford algebra is exactly analogous to generalization of fuzzy two-spheres to higher dimensional fuzzy spheres. Higher dimensional fuzzy spheres have an interesting hierarchical structure made of "compounds" of lower dimensional spheres. We give a physical interpretation for such particular structure of fuzzy spheres by utilizing Landau models in generic ev…
Using a momentum representation of a magnetic von Neumann lattice, we study a two-dimensional electron in a uniform magnetic field and obtain one-particle spectra of various periodic short-range potential problems in the lowest Landau level. We find that the energy spectra satisfy a duality relation between a period of the potential and a magnetic length. The energy spectra consist of the Hofstadter-type bands and flat bands. We also study the connection between a periodic short-range potential problem and a tight-binding model.
The Lowest Landau Level (LLL) equation emerges as an accurate approximation for a class of dynamical regimes of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC) in two-dimensional isotropic harmonic traps in the limit of weak interactions. Building on recent developments in the field of spatially confined extended Hamiltonian systems, we find a fully nonlinear solution of this equation representing periodically modulated precession of a single vortex. Motions of this type have been previously seen in numerical simulations and experiments at moderately weak coupling. Our work provides the first controlled analy…
We present field theoretical descriptions of massless (2+1) dimensional nonrelativistic fermions in an external magnetic field, in terms of a fermionic and bosonic second quantized language. An infinite dimensional algebra, $W_{\infty}$, appears as the algebra of unitary transformations which preserve the lowest Landau level condition and the particle number. In the droplet approximation it reduces to the algebra of area-preserving diffeomorphisms, which is responsible for the existence of a universal chiral boson Lagrangian independent of the electrostatic potential. We argue that the bosonic…
By using graded (super) Lie algebras, we can construct noncommutative superspace on curved homogeneous manifolds. In this paper, we take a flat limit to obtain flat noncommutative superspace. We particularly consider $d=2$ and $d=4$ superspaces based on the graded Lie algebras $osp(1|2)$, $su(2|1)$ and $psu(2|2)$. Jacobi identities of supersymmetry algebras and associativities of star products are automatically satisfied. Covariant derivatives which commute with supersymmetry generators are obtained and chiral constraints can be imposed. We also discuss that these noncommutative superspaces ca…
We describe the lowest Landau level of a quantum electron star in AdS4. In the presence of a suitably strong magnetic field, the dynamics of fermions in the bulk is effectively reduced from four to two dimensions. These two-dimensional fermions can subsequently be treated using the techniques of bosonization and the difficult many-body problem of building a gravitating, charged quantum star is reduced to solving the sine-Gordon model coupled to a gauge field and a metric. The kinks of the sine-Gordon model provide the holographic dual of the lowest Landau levels of the strongly-coupled d=2+1 d…
We consider extremal correlation functions, involving arbitrary number of BPS (chiral or twisted chiral) operators and exactly one anti-BPS operator in 2D N=(2,2) theories. These correlators define the structure constants in the rings generated by the BPS operators with their operator product expansions. We present a way of computing these correlators from the sphere partition function of a deformed theory using localization. Relating flat space and sphere correlators is nontrivial due to operator mixing on the sphere induced by conformal anomaly. We discuss the supergravitational source of th…
We construct an action for the composite Dirac fermion consistent with symmetries of electrons projected to the lowest Landau level. First we construct a generalization of the $g=2$ electron that gives a smooth massless limit on any curved background. Using the symmetries of the microscopic electron theory in this massless limit we find a number of constraints on any low-energy effective theory. We find that any low-energy description must couple to a geometry which exhibits nontrivial curvature even on flat space-times. Any composite fermion must have an electric dipole moment proportional an…
We show that for a class of model Hamiltonians for which certain trial quantum Hall wavefunctions are exact ground states, there is a single spectral density function which controls all two-point correlation functions of density, current and stress tensor components. From this we show that the static structure factors of these wavefunctions behaves at long wavelengths as $s_4 k^4$ where the coefficient $s_4$ is directly related to the shift: $s_4=(\mathcal S-1)/8$.
We relate the collective dynamic internal geometric degrees of freedom to the gauge fluctuations in $ν=1/m$(m odd) fractional quantum Hall effects. In this way, in the lowest Landau level, a highly nontrivial quantum geometry in two-dimensional guiding center space emerges from these internal geometric modes. Using the Dirac bracket method, we find that this quantum geometric field theory is a topological non-commutative Chern-Simons theory.Topological indices, such as the guiding center angular momentum (also called the shift) and the guiding center spin, which characterize the fractional qua…
We consider the integer QH state on Riemann surfaces with conical singularities, with the main objective of detecting the effect of the gravitational anomaly directly from the form of the wave function on a singular geometry. We suggest the formula expressing the normalisation factor of the holomorphic state in terms of the regularized zeta determinant on conical surfaces and check this relation for some model geometries. We also comment on possible extensions of this result to the fractional QH states.
We discuss the bosonization of nonrelativistic fermions interacting with non-Abelian gauge fields in the lowest Landau level in the framework of higher dimensional quantum Hall effect. The bosonic action is a one-dimensional matrix action, which can also be written as a noncommutative field theory, invariant under $W_N$ transformations. The requirement that the usual gauge transformation should be realized as a $W_N$ transformation provides an analog of a Seiberg-Witten map, which allows us to express the action purely in terms of bosonic fields. The semiclassical limit of this, describing the…
In a recent article, we were motivated by the question of whether any of the remarkable condensed matter phenomena, such as the quantum Hall effect (QHE), the Integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) etc., could potentially be observed in the extreme astrophysical environments of neutron stars. As a prequel to that work, and with the aim of understanding better the role of the geometry of the conducting surface on the structure of Landau levels, in this article we study the quantum dynamics of a quantum particle on a squashed sphere. More specifically, we study the dynamics of a single particle on a…
Quantum Hall systems offer the most familiar setting where strong inter-particle interactions combine with the topology of single particle states to yield novel phenomena. Despite our mature understanding of these systems, an open challenge has been to to develop a microscopic theory capturing both their universal and non-universal properties, when the Hamiltonian is restricted to the non-commutative space of the lowest Landau level. Here we develop such a theory for the Jain sequence of bosonic fractional quantum Hall states at fillings $ν={p\over p+1}$. Building on a lowest Landau level desc…
We study the electronic transport in the lowest Landau level of disordered two-dimensional semimetals placed in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. The material system is modeled by the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang Hamiltonian, which has zero energy Landau modes due to the material's intrinsic Berry curvature. These turn out to be crucially important for the density of states and the static conductivity of the disordered system. We develop an analytical approach to the diffusion and conductivity based on a self-consistent equation of motion for the mean squared displacement. The obtained valu…
Broken-symmetry quantum Hall (QH) states with filling factors ν=0, \pm 1, \pm 2, \pm 3 in the lowest Landau level in bilayer graphene are analyzed by solving the gap equation in the random phase approximation. It is shown that in the plane of electric and magnetic fields, the critical line, which separates the spin and layer polarized phases at ν=0, extends to the ν=\pm 1 QH states. The amplitudes of the gaps in the ν= \pm 1, \pm 3, and ν= \pm 2 QH states are significantly smaller than the amplitude of the ν=0 gap, due to the separate filling of the n=0,1 orbital Landau levels and the negative…
A theory for a Fermi-liquid-like state in a system of charged bosons at filling factor one is developed, working in the lowest Landau level. The approach is based on a representation of the problem as fermions with a system of constraints, introduced by Pasquier and Haldane (unpublished). This makes the system a gauge theory with gauge algebra W_infty. The low-energy theory is analyzed based on Hartree-Fock and a corresponding conserving approximation. This is shown to be equivalent to introducing a gauge field, which at long wavelengths gives an infinite-coupling U(1) gauge theory, without a …
Starting from a system of planar electrons in a strong magnetic field normal to the plane, interacting with perturbing electromagnetic fields, an effective Lagrangian for the fermions in the lowest Landau level (L.L.L.) has been derived. By choosing a suitable background electrostatic potential, an incompressible droplet of these electrons is constructed. The gauge invariant effective Lagrangian for the electrons in the L.L.L. is shown to split naturally into a $1+1$ dimensional Lagrangian for the electrons on the surface of the droplet and into a $2+1$ dimensional gauge-field Lagrangian repre…
In this work, we present the inverted harmonic oscillator (IHO) Hamiltonian as a paradigm to understand the quantum mechanics of scattering and time-decay in a diverse set of physical systems. As one of the generators of area preserving transformations, the IHO Hamiltonian can be studied as a dilatation generator, squeeze generator, a Lorentz boost generator, or a scattering potential. In establishing these different forms, we demonstrate the physics of the IHO that underlies phenomena as disparate as the Hawking-Unruh effect and scattering in the lowest Landau level(LLL) in quantum Hall syste…
We find a simple relation between two-dimensional BPS N=2 superconformal blocks and bosonic Virasoro conformal blocks, which allows us to analyze the crossing equations for BPS 4-point functions in unitary (2,2) superconformal theories numerically with semidefinite programming. We constrain gaps in the non-BPS spectrum through the operator product expansion of BPS operators, in ways that depend on the moduli of exactly marginal deformations through chiral ring coefficients. In some cases, our bounds on the spectral gaps are observed to be saturated by free theories, by N=2 Liouville theory, an…
We derive a number of exact relations between response functions of holomorphic, chiral fractional quantum Hall states and their particle-hole (PH) conjugates. These exact relations allow one to calculate the Hall conductivity, Hall viscosity, various Berry phases, and the static structure factor of PH-conjugate states from the corresponding properties of the original states. These relations establish a precise duality between chiral quantum Hall states and their PH-conjugates. The key ingredient in the proof of the relations is a generalization of Girvin's construction of PH-conjugate states …
It is known that knot homologies admit a physical description as spaces of open BPS states. We study operators and algebras acting on these spaces. This leads to a very rich story, which involves wall crossing phenomena, algebras of closed BPS states acting on spaces of open BPS states, and deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models. One important application to knot homologies is the existence of "colored differentials" that relate homological invariants of knots colored by different representations. Based on this structure, we formulate a list of properties of the colored HOMFLY homology that ca…
We present first evidence for the Landau level structure of Dirac eigenmodes in full QCD for nonzero background magnetic fields, based on first principles lattice simulations using staggered quarks. Our approach involves the identification of the lowest Landau level modes in two dimensions, where topological arguments ensure a clear separation of these modes from energetically higher states, and an expansion of the full four-dimensional modes in the basis of these two-dimensional states. We evaluate various fermionic observables including the quark condensate and the spin polarization in this …
We consider gauge theories in a strong external magnetic like field. This situation can appear either in conventional four-dimensional theories, but also naturally in extra-dimensional theories and especially in brane world models. We show that in the lowest Landau level approximation, some of the coordinates become non-commutative. We find physical reasons to formal problems with non-commutative gauge theories such as the issue with SU(N) gauge symmetries. Our construction is applied to a minimal extension of the standard model. It is shown that the Higgs sector might be non-commutative where…
We compute the refractive indices of a photon propagating in strong magnetic fields on the basis of the analytic representation of the vacuum polarization tensor obtained in our previous paper. When the external magnetic field is strong enough for the fermion one-loop diagram of the polarization tensor to be approximated by the lowest Landau level, the propagating mode in parallel to the magnetic field is subject to modification: The refractive index deviates from unity and can be very large, and when the photon energy is large enough, the refractive index acquires an imaginary part indicating…
