We study the electronic transport in the lowest Landau level of disordered two-dimensional semimetals placed in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. The material system is modeled by the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang Hamiltonian, which has zero energy Landau modes due to the material's intrinsic Berry curvature. These turn out to be crucially important for the density of states and the static conductivity of the disordered system. We develop an analytical approach to the diffusion and conductivity based on a self-consistent equation of motion for the mean squared displacement. The obtained value of the zero mode conductivity is close to the conductivity of disordered Dirac electrons without magnetic fields, which have zero energy points in the spectrum as well. Our analysis is applicable in a broader context of disordered two-dimensional electron gases in strong magnetic fields.
Semi-Dirac semimetals have received enthusiastic research both theoretically and experimentally in the recent years. Due to the anisotropic dispersion, its physical properties are highly direction-dependent. In this work we employ the Feynman diagrammatic perturbation theory to study the transport properties in quantum diffusive regime. The magneto-conductivity with quantum interference corrections is derived, which demonstrate the weak localization effect in the semi-Dirac semimetal. Furthermore, the origin of anomalous Hall conductivity is also clarified, where both the intrinsic and side-ju…
We investigate the effect of short-range spin-independent disorder on the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in Weyl semimetals. Based on a minimum two-band model, the disorder effect is examined in the quantum diffusion limit by including the Drude correction and the correction due to the Cooperon channel. It is shown that the Drude correction renormalizes the CME coefficient by a factor to a finite value that is independent of the system size. Furthemore, due to an additional momentum expansion involved in deriving the CME coefficient, the contribution of Cooperon to the CME coefficient is governe…
We study the propagation of an oscillatory electromagnetic field inside a Weyl semimetal. In conventional conductors, the motion of the charge carriers in the skin layer near the surface can be diffusive, ballistic, or hydrodynamic. We show that the presence of chiral anomalies, intrinsic to the massless Weyl particles, leads to a hitherto neglected nonlocal regime that can separate the normal and viscous skin effects. We propose to use this novel regime as a diagnostic of the presence of chiral anomalies in optical conductivity measurements. These results are obtained from a generalized kinet…
Finding fingerprints of disordered Weyl semimetals (WSMs) is an unsolved task. Here we report such findings in the level statistics and the fractal nature of electron wavefunction around Weyl nodes of disordered WSMs. The nearest-neighbor level spacing follows a new universal distribution $P_c(s)=C_1 s^2\exp[-C_2 s^{2-γ_0}]$ originally proposed for the level statistics of critical states in the integer quantum Hall systems or normal dirty metals (diffusive metals) at metal-to-insulator transitions, instead of the Wigner-Dyson distribution for diffusive metals. Numerically, we find $γ_0=0.62\pm…
Magnetotransport provides key experimental signatures in Weyl semimetals. The longitudinal magnetoresistance is linked to the chiral anomaly and the transversal magnetoresistance to the dominant charge relaxation mechanism. Axial magnetic fields that act with opposite sign on opposite chiralities facilitate new transport experiments that probe the low-energy Weyl nodes. As recently realized, these axial fields can be achieved by straining samples or adding inhomogeneities to them. Here, we identify a robust signature of axial magnetic fields: an anomalous scaling of the conductance in the diff…

We propose and study generic multi-Weyl semimetal (mWSM) lattice Hamiltonians that break particle-hole symmetry. These models fall into two categories: model I (model II) where the gap and tilt terms are coupled (decoupled) can host type-I and type-II Weyl nodes simultaneously (separately) in a hybrid phase (type-I and type-II phases, respectively). We concentrate on the question of how anisotropy and non-linearity in the dispersions, gaps and tilt terms influence diffusive second order transport quantities namely, the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) and the Berry curvature dipole (BCD) a…
The Casimir force and thermal Casimir force originating from quantum electromagnetic fluctuations at zero and non-zero temperatures, respectively, are significant in nano- and microscale systems and are well-understood. Less understood, however, are the Casimir and thermal Casimir forces in systems breaking Lorentz reciprocity. In this work, we derive a formalism for thermal Casimir forces between an arbitrary number of spheres based on fluctuational electrodynamics and scattering theory without the assumption of Lorentz reciprocity. We study the total Casimir force in systems of two and three…
