The interaction of grain boundaries (GBs) with inherent defects and/or impurity elements in multi-crystalline silicon play a decisive role in their electrical behavior. Strain, depending on the types of GBs and defects, plays an important role in these systems. Herein, the correlation between the structural and electronic properties of Σ 3{111} Si-GB in the presence of interstitial oxygen impurities is studied from the first-principles framework, considering the global and local model of strain. It is observed that the distribution of strain along with the number of impurity atoms modifies the energetics of the material. However, the electronic properties of the considered Si-GBs are not particularly affected by the strain and by the oxygen impurities, unless a very high local distortion induces additional structural defects.
Understanding defect effect on carrier dynamics is essential for both fundamental physics and potential applications of transition metal dichalcogenides. Here, the phenomenon of oxygen impurities trapping photo-excited carriers has been studied with ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Oxygen impurities are intentionally created in exfoliated multilayer MoSe2 with Ar+ plasma irradiation and air exposure. After plasma treatment, the signal of transient absorption first increases and then decreases, which is a signature of defect capturing carriers. With larger density of oxygen defects, the trapp…
We have used a full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method to calculate the effects of oxygen impurities on the electronic structure of NiAl. Using the supercell method with a 16-atom supercell we have investigated the cases where an oxygen atom is substitutionally placed at either a nickel or an aluminum site. Full relaxation of the atoms within the supercell was allowed. We found that oxygen prefers to occupy a nickel site over an aluminum site with a site selection energy of 138 mRy (21,370 K). An oxygen atom placed at an aluminum site is found to cause a substantial relaxation of its n…
Most research on nanocrystalline alloys has been focused on planned doping of metals with other metallic elements, but nonmetallic impurities are also prevalent in the real world. In this work, we report on the combined effects of metallic dopants and nonmetallic impurities on grain boundary energy and strength using first-principles calculations, with a $Σ$5 (310) grain boundary in Cu chosen as a model system. We find a clear correlation between the grain boundary energy and the change in excess free volume of doped grain boundaries. A combination of a larger substitutional dopant and an inte…
We have performed ab initio calculations to systematically investigate electronic properties and magnetism of insulating non-magnetic beryllium monoxide nanotubes induced by non-magnetic sp impurities: boron, carbon and nitrogen. We found that in the presence of these sp impurities, which replace oxygen atoms, the non-magnetic BeO NTs transform into magnetic semiconductors, which acquire magnetization caused by spin splitting of (B,C,N) 2p states located in the forbidden gap of a BeO tube. The magnetic moments of the impurities vary from 0.65 to 1.60. On the contrary, when (B,C,N) dopants subs…
We study the interface between carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and surface-deposited titanium using electron microscopy and photoemission spectroscopy, supported by density functional calculations. Charge transfer from the Ti atoms to the nanotube and carbide formation is observed at the interface which indicates strong interaction. Nevertheless, the presence of oxygen between the Ti and the CNTs significantly weakens the Ti?CNT interaction. Ti atoms at the surface will preferentially bond to oxygenated sites. Potential sources of oxygen impurities are examined, namely oxygen from any residual atmosph…
Isolated oxygen impurities and fully oxidized structures of four stable two-dimensional (2D) SiS structures are investigated by {\em ab initio} density functional calculations. Binding energies of oxygen impurities for all the four 2D SiS structures are found larger than those for phosphorene, due to the lower electronegativity of Si atoms. The most stable configurations of isolated oxygen impurities for different 2D SiS structures are decided and the corresponding 2D structures with saturated oxidation (SiSO) are predicted. Among all the four fully oxidized structures, $α$-SiSO is demonstrate…
Multi-crystalline silicon is widely used for producing low-cost and high-efficiency solar cells. During crystal growth and device fabrication, silicon solar cells contain grain boundaries (GBs) which are preferential segregation sites for atomic impurities such as oxygen atoms. GBs can induce charge carriers recombination significantly reducing carrier lifetimes and therefore they can be detrimental for Si device performance. We studied the correlation between structural, energetic and electronic properties of Σ3{111} Si GB in the presence of vacancies, strain and multiple O segregation. The s…
In this work we have employed density-functional theory with hybrid functionals to investigate the atomic and electronic structure of bare and hydrogenated Mn doped ZnO nanowires with small diameter. We determine changes in magnetic and electronic structure of Mn-doped ZnO nanowires due to surface effects, such as hydrogen adsorption on the surface, presence of oxygen vacancies and dangling bonds. In the absence of passivation on the nanowire surface, the manganese atoms segregate to the surface, whereas under hydrogen adsorption the incorporation of Mn is energetically more favourable at inne…
We have investigated the role of transition metal impurities and oxygen vacancies in the formation of ferromagnetism in Co-doped TiO2 using LSDA+U approach which takes into account strong on-cite Coulomb correlations for electronic structure calculations. Several model systems such as supercells of rutile TiO2 with Co{+2} ion in high-spin state substituted into titanium cite and with oxygen vacancies were considered. We found that exchange interaction of Co magnetic ions is ferromagnetic, but very weak due to the large average impurity-impurity distance. However, its strength becomes three tim…
The effect of oxygen impurities upon the radial thermal expansion (ar) of bundles of closed single-walled carbon nanotubes has been investigated in the temperature interval 2.2-48 K by the dilatometric method. Saturation of bundles of nanotubes with oxygen caused an increase in the positive ar-values in the whole interval of temperatures used. Also, several peaks appeared in the temperature dependence ar(T) above 20 K. The low temperature desorption of oxygen from powders consisting of bundles of single-walled nanotubes with open and closed ends has been investigated
Solid oxide fuel/electrolyzer cell (SOFC/SOEC) converts energy between chemical and electrical forms inversely. Yet electrolyte degradation takes place much more severe for SOEC than SOFC during long-term operations. By solving transport equations, we found very large oxygen potential gradients and sharp oxygen potential transitions at grain boundaries of polycrystalline SOFC/SOEC electrolyte. Surprisingly, an inversion of oxygen potential transitions was identified, suggesting a fundamentally different transport mechanism for minor electronic charge carriers. Such findings could be critical t…
Oxygen vacancy formation energies play a major role in the electric field assisted abnormal grain growth of technologically relevant polycrystalline perovskite phases. The underlying effect on the atomic scale is assumed to be a redistribution of cationic and anionic point defects between grain boundaries and the bulk interior regions of the grains due to different defect formation energies in the structurally different regions, accompanied by the formation of space charge zones. Using atomistic calculations based on classical interatomic potentials, we derive and discuss optimized structures …
The bonding properties of tilt boundary in poly-silicon and the effect of interstitial impurities are investigated by first-principles. In order to obtain thorough information on the nature of chemical bondings in these solid systems, an accurate topological analysis is performed, through partitioning of the electron localization function. Although the mechanism of segregation of single light impurities, such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in Si-based systems is known, it is only in the presence of multiple segregations that the distinctive structures of the various interstitial impurities em…
We investigate the interaction effect between oxygen impurities in crystalline germanium on the basis of a quantum rotor model. The dipolar interaction of nearby oxygen impurities engenders non-trivial low-lying excitations, giving rise to anomalous behaviors for oxygen-doped germanium (Ge:O) below a few degrees Kelvin. In particular, it is theoretically predicted that Ge:O samples with oxygen-concentration of 10$^{17-18}$cm$^{-3}$ show (i) power-law specific heats below 0.1 K, and (ii) a peculiar hump in dielectric susceptibilities around 1 K. We present an interpretation for the power-law sp…
Impurities are often driven to segregate to grain boundaries, which can significantly alter a material's thermal stability and mechanical behavior. To provide a comprehensive picture of this issue, the influence of a wide variety of common nonmetal impurities (H, B, C, N, O, Si, P and S) incorporated during service or materials processing are studied using first-principles simulations, with a focus on identifying changes to the energetics and mechanical strength of a Cu $Σ$5 (310) grain boundary. Changes to the grain boundary energy are found to be closely correlated with the covalent radii of…
We evaluate the interplay between epitaxial strain and oxygen vacancy formation in the perovskite-structure oxide lanthanum aluminate, LaAlO$_3$. Using density functional theory within the GGA$+U$ approximation we calculate the dependence of the oxygen vacancy formation energy on the biaxial strain conditions. We find that the change in formation energy with strain is negligible over the range of strain values usually accessible through coherent epitaxial growth. Our findings suggest that experimental reports of different oxygen vacancy concentrations in strained films result from extrinsic fa…
Hybrid functionals and empirical correction schemes are compared to conventional semi-local density functional theory (DFT) calculations in order to assess the predictive power of these methods concerning the formation energy and the charge transfer level of impurities in the wide-gap semiconductor ZnO. While the generalized gradient approximation fails to describe the electronic structure of the N impurity in ZnO correctly, methods that widen the band gap of ZnO by introducing additional non-local potentials yield the formation energy and charge transfer level of the impurity in reasonable ag…
Pentacenequinone (PnQ) impurities have been introduced into a pentacene source material at number densities from 0.001 to 0.474 to quantify the relative effects of impurity content and grain boundary structure on transport in pentacene thin-film transistors. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and electrical measurements of top-contact pentacene thin-film transistors have been employed to directly correlate initial structure and final film structures, with the device mobility as a function of added impurity content. The results reveal a factor four decrease in mobility without significant changes in…
Ion transport in solid-state devices is of great interest for current and future energy and information technologies. A superior enhancement of several orders of magnitude of the oxygen diffusivity has been recently reported for grain boundaries in lanthanum strontium manganites. However, the significance and extent of this unique phenomenon is not yet established. Here, we fabricate a thin film continuous composition map of the La0.8Sr0.2(Mn1-xCox)0.85O3-d family revealing a substantial enhancement of the grain boundary oxygen mass transport properties for the entire range of compositions. Th…
First principles calculations of the Sigma 5 (310)[001] symmetric tilt grain boundary in Cu with Bi, Na, and Ag substitutional impurities provide evidence that in the phenomenon of Bi embrittlement of Cu grain boundaries electronic effects do not play a major role; on the contrary, the embrittlement is mostly a structural or "size" effect. Na is predicted to be nearly as good an embrittler as Bi, whereas Ag does not embrittle the boundary in agreement with experiment. While we reject the prevailing view that "electronic" effects (i.e., charge transfer) are responsible for embrittlement, we do …
An atomic and electronic structure of the bulk and thin-film morphologies of ZnO were modified using pulsed Bi-ion implantation (1x1017 cm-2 fluence, 70 min exposure under Bi-ion beam, EBi+ = 30 keV, pulsed ion-current density of not more than 0.8 mA/cm2 with a repetition rate of 12.5 Hz). The final samples were qualified by X-ray photoelectron core-level and valence band mapping spectroscopy applying ASTM materials science standard. The spectroscopy data obtained was discussed on the basis of DFT-models for Bi-embedding into ZnO host-matrices. It was established that in the case of direct Bi-…
Atomic scale understanding of the role of hydrogen and oxygen segregation in the embrittlement of grain boundaries in a twinning induced plasticity steel
The corrosion potential of commercially pure titanium in NaCl solutions is dramatically affected by trace Fe additions, which cause the appearance of submicron pockets of \b{eta} phase at grain boundary triple points. Furthermore, the low solubility of hydrogen in hexagonal close-packed α-Ti makes titanium alloys prone to subsequent hydride-associated failures due to stress corrosion cracking. We analyzed α-α and α-\b{eta} sections of the abutting grain boundary of a \b{eta} pocket in a Grade 2 CP-Ti, and the α-\b{eta} phase boundary. Fe and H partition to \b{eta} and segregate at the grain bo…
The over threshold carbon-loadings (~50 at.%) of initial TiO2-hosts and posterior Cu-sensitization (~7 at.%) was made using pulsed ion-implantation technique in sequential mode with 1 hour vacuum-idle cycle between sequential stages of embedding. The final Cx-TiO2:Cu samples were qualified using XPS wide-scan elemental analysis, core-levels and valence band mappings. The results obtained were discussed on the theoretic background employing DFT-calculations. The combined XPS and DFT analysis allows to establish and prove the final formula of the synthesized samples as Cx-TiO2:[Cu+][Cu2+] for th…
Spin polarized current is the main ingredient of diluted magnetic oxides due to its potential manipulation in spintronic devices. However, most research has focused on ferromagnetic properties rather than polarization of electric current, because direct measurements were difficult and the origin of spin polarized currents has yet to be fully understood. The method to increase the spin polarized current percentage is beyond practical consideration at the present status. To target this problem, we focus on the role of oxygen vacancies and nano grain size on the spin polarized current, which are …
A model for ionic and electronic grain boundary transport through thin films, scales or membranes with columnar grain structure is introduced. The grain structure is idealized as a lattice of identical hexagonal cells - a honeycomb pattern. Reactions with the environment constitute the boundary conditions and drive the transport between the surfaces. Time-dependent simulations solving the Poisson equation self-consistently with the Nernst-Planck flux equations for the mobile species are performed. In the resulting Poisson-Nernst-Planck system of equations, the electrostatic potential is obtain…
The uranium mononitride (UN) is a material considered as a promising candidate for Generation-IV nuclear reactor fuels. Unfortunately, oxygen in air affects UN fuel performance and stability. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of oxygen adsorption and further UN oxidation in the bulk and at surface. Recently, we performed a detailed study on oxygen interaction with UN surface using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We were able to identify an atomistic mechanism of UN surface oxidation consisting of several important steps, starting with the oxygen molecule diss…
Segregated impurities at grain boundaries can dramatically change the mechanical behavior of metals, while the mechanism is still obscure in some cases. Here, we suggest an unified approach to investigate segregation and its effects on the mechanical properties of polycrystalline alloys using the example of 3$sp$ impurities (Mg, Al, Si, P, or S) at a special type $Σ5(310)[001]$ tilt grain boundary in Cu. We show that for these impurities segregating to the grain boundary the strain contribution to the work of grain boundary decohesion is small and that the chemical contribution correlates with…
Oxygen vacancies have been identified to play an important role in accelerating grain growth in polycrystalline perovskite-oxide ceramics. In order to advance the fundamental understanding of growth mechanisms at the atomic scale, classical atomistic simulations were carried out to investigate the atomistic structures and oxygen vacancy formation energies at grain boundaries in the prototypical perovskite-oxide material SrTiO$_3$. In this work, we focus on two symmetric tilt grain boundaries, namely $Σ$5(310)[001] and $Σ$5(210)[001]. A one-dimensional continuum model is adapted to determine th…
A space-charge model is applied to describe the equilibrium effects of segregation of double-donor oxygen vacancies to grain boundaries in dry and wet acceptor-doped samples of the perovskite oxide BaZrO3. The grain boundary core vacancy concentrations and electrostatic potential barriers resulting from different vacancy segregation energies are evaluated. Density-functional calculations on vacancy segregation to the mirror-symmetric Σ3 (112) [-110] tilt grain boundary are also presented. Our results indicate that oxygen vacancy segregation can be responsible for the low grain boundary proton …
The results of DFT supercell calculations of oxygen behavior upon the UN (001) and (110) surfaces as well as at the tilt grain boundary are presented. Oxygen adsorption, migration, incorporation into the surface N vacancies on (001) and (110) surfaces have been modeled using 2D slabs of different thicknesses and supercell sizes. The temperature dependences of the N vacancy formation energies and oxygen incorporation energies are calculated. We demonstrate that O atoms easily penetrate into UN surfaces and grain boundaries containing N vacancies, due to negative incorporation energies and a sma…
Photoluminescence and thermally stimulated luminescence of synthetic and natural (morion and smoky) $α$-quartz crystals doped with aluminum and alkali ions were studied. The photoluminescence spectrum is characterized with the main blue band around 400 nm (~ 3.1 eV). The corresponding luminescence center is based on a defect containing aluminum and alkali as compensators in natural and synthetic quartz crystals. Photoluminescence can be detected at high temperatures above 700 K. The thermal quenching activation energy is 0.15 eV and the frequency factor is 3 10$^7$ s$^{-1}$. In the samples wit…
Microstructured Silicon, which is obtained by irradiating the surface of a Silicon wafer with femtosecond laser pulses under certain circumstances, has unusual optical properties such as the strong absorption of light with wavelength from 0.25μm to 17μm. So it holds great promise in the intermediate band solar cell (IBSC). Some articles have discussed the electronic structure associating with simple substitutional impurities in Silicon introduced by chalcogenides. And on this basis, after high temperature annealing treatment, we establish the mode of impurity levels of microstructured Silicon …
We have studied the segregation of P and B impurities during oxidation of the Si(100) surface by means of combined static and dynamical first-principles simulations based on density functional theory. In the bare surface, dopants segregate to chemically stable surface sites or to locally compressed subsurface sites. Surface oxidation is accompanied by development of tensile surface stress up to 2.9 N/m at a coverage of 1.5 monolayers of oxygen and by formation of oxidised Si species with charges increasing approximately linearly with the number of neighbouring oxygen atoms. Substitutional P an…
In this paper, impedance spectroscopy study was performed to establish the electrical property and microstructure relations of the as-deposited and post-annealed polycrystalline CCTO films prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) substrates by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD). Our results demonstrated that the as-deposited polycrystalline CCTO film was made of insulating grain boundaries with semiconducting grains, indicating that the high-dielectric-constant is attributed to the barrier layer capacitor (BLC) effects. The simple resistor-capacitor (RC) equivalent circuit and the modified constant phase el…
Knowing the correlation between grain boundary mobility and oxygen potential in yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), we have utilized the grain size as a microstructural marker to map local oxygen potential. Abrupt oxygen potential transition is established under a large current density and in thicker samples. Cathodically depressed oxygen potential can be easily triggered by poor electrode kinetics or in an oxygen-lean environment. Widespread cavitation in the presence of highly reducing oxygen potential suggests oxygen vacancy condensation instead of oxygen bubble formation as commonly assumed …
Using ab-initio calculations within the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT), atomic structures and electronic properties of MoS2/HfO2 interface are investigated. The impact of interfacial oxygen concentration on the MoS2/HfO2 interface electronic structure is examined in order to mimic the atomic layer deposition growth at ambient conditions. Then, the effect on band offsets and the thermodynamic stability of those interfaces is investigated and compared with available relevant experimental data. These results seem to indicate that, for a well-prepared interface, the electronic device…
Metal nano-aerogels combine a large surface area, a high structural stability, and a high catalytic activity towards a variety of chemical reactions. The performance of such nanostructures is underpinned by the atomic-level distribution of their constituents. Yet monitoring their sub-nanoscale structure and composition to guide property optimization remains extremely challenging. Here, we synthesized Pd nano-aerogels from a K2PdCl4 precursor and two different NaBH4 reductant concentrations in distilled water. Atom probe tomography reveals that the aerogel is poly-crystalline and that impuritie…
Fabrication, handling and disposal of nuclear fuel materials require comprehensive knowledge of their surface morphology and reactivity. Due to unavoidable contact with air components (even at low partial pressures), UN samples contain considerable amount of oxygen impurities affecting fuel properties. The basic properties of O atoms adsorbed on the UN(001) surface are simulated here combining the two first principles calculation methods based on the plane wave basis set and that of the localized atomic orbitals.
We employ density-functional-theory calculations to analyze the interactions between oxygen interstitial atoms and <a>-type screw dislocations (<a> = a<11-20>/3 ) in alpha-titanium, based on investigations of generalized stacking fault (GSF) energies, dislocation core structures and the strain field of an oxygen interstitial. Compared with the substitutional atoms such as Al, there is a large repulsive interaction between oxygen interstitials at the octahedral site and an <a>-type screw dislocation core, since the volume for the interstitial atom between Ti lattice sites is largely reduced in …
Memristive switching in polycrystalline materials is widely attributed to the formation and rupture of conducting filaments, believed to be mediated by oxygen-vacancy redistribution. The underlying atomic-scale processes are still unknown, however, which limits device modeling and design. Here we combine experimental data with multi-scale calculations to elucidate the entire atomic-scale cycle in undoped polycrystalline BiFeO3. Conductive atomic force microscopy reveals that the grain boundaries behave like two-dimensional nanovaristors while, on the return part of the cycle, the decreasing cu…

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been established as a versatile route for the large-scale synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenides, such as tungsten disulfide (WS2). Yet, the role of the precursor composition on the efficiency of the CVD process remains largely unknown and yet to be explored. Here, we employ Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) in a two-stage process to tune the oxygen content in tungsten oxide (WO3-x) precursors and demonstrate that the presence of oxygen vacancies in the precursor films leads to a more facile conversion from WO3-x to WS2. Using a joint study based on ab in…
Grain boundaries (GBs) can be used as traps for solute atoms and defects, and the interaction between segregants and GBs is crucial for understanding the properties of nanocrystalline materials. In this study, we have systematically investigated the tendency of Pt to segregate as well as the interaction between Pt and oxygen vacancies at the sigma 3/(111) GB of ceria (CeO2). The Pt atom has a stronger tendency to segregate to the sigma 3/(111) GB than to the (111) and (110) free-standing surfaces, but the tendency is weaker than to the (100) free-standing surface. Mechanic contributions (latti…
We theoretically study the atomic structure and energetics of silicon and silicon-nitrogen impurities in graphene. Using density-functional theory, we get insight into the atomic structures of the impurities, evaluate their formation energies and assess their abundance in realistic samples. We find that nitrogen, as well as oxygen and hydrogen, are trapped at silicon impurities, considerably altering the electronic properties of the system. Furthermore, we show that nitrogen doping can induce local magnetic moments resulting in spin-dependent transport properties, even though neither silicon n…
Segregation of impurities to grain boundaries plays an important role in both the stability and macroscopic behavior of polycrystalline materials. The research objective in this work is to better characterize the energetics and length scales involved with the process of solute and impurity segregation to grain boundaries. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to calculate the segregation energies for carbon within multiple grain boundary sites over a database of 125 symmetric tilt grain boundaries in Fe. The simulation results show that the majority of atomic sites near the grain boundary ha…
