In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of nonlocal bistable reaction-diffusion equations starting from compactly supported initial conditions. Depending on the relationship between the nonlinearity, the interaction kernel and the diffusion coefficient, we show that the solutions can either: propagate, go extinct or remain pinned. We especially focus on the latter regime where solutions are pinned by thoroughly studying discontinuous ground state solutions of the problem for a specific interaction kernel serving as a case study. We also present a detailed numerical analysis of the problem.
Seasonality frequently occurs in population models, and the corresponding seasonal patterns have been of great interest to scientists. This paper is concerned with traveling waves to a time-periodic bistable Lotka-Volterra competition system with nonlocal dispersal. We first establish the existence, uniqueness and stability of traveling wave solutions for this system. Then, by utilizing comparison principle and the stability property, the relationship among the bistable wave speed, the asymptotic propagation speeds of the associated monotone subsystems and the speed of upper/lower solutions is…
This paper is concerned with the existence and the stability of travelling wave solutions to a bistable reaction-diffusion equation with a jump discontinuious point on nonlinear term. Sub-super solution method is used throughout this paper. As a matter of fact, this nonlinear discontinuity term is frequently emerging when study the travelling wave solution of reaction-diffusion-ODE systems. Hence, it is meaningful to consider this kind of problem.
In this paper, curved fronts are constructed for spatially periodic bistable reaction-diffusion equations under the a priori assumption that there exist pulsating fronts in every direction. Some sufficient and some necessary conditions of the existence of curved fronts are given. Furthermore, the curved front is proved to be unique and stable. Finally, a curved front with varying interfaces is also constructed. Despite the effect of the spatial heterogeneity, the result shows the existence of curved fronts for spatially periodic bistable reaction-diffusion equations which is known for the homo…
We consider a reaction-diffusion equation with a convection term in one space variable, where the diffusion changes sign from the positive to the negative and the reaction term is bistable. We study the existence of wavefront solutions, their uniqueness and regularity. The presence of convection reveals several new features of wavefronts: according to the mutual positions of the diffusivity and reaction, profiles can occur either for a single value of the speed or for a bounded interval of such values; uniqueness (up to shifts) is lost; moreover, plateaus of arbitrary length can appear; profil…
This paper is concerned with pulsating waves for multi-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations in spatially periodic media. First, assuming the existence of pulsating waves connecting two linearly stable steady states, we study the continuity of wave speeds with respect to the direction of propagation. The continuity was proved in [15] under the extra condition that the speeds are nonzero in all directions. Here, we revisit this continuity result without the extra condition. Secondly, we provide some sufficient conditions ensuring the existence of pulsating waves in rapidly oscillating media,…
We study the large time behaviour of the reaction-diffsuion equation $\partial_t u=Δu +f(u)$ in spatial dimension $N$, when the nonlinear term is bistable and the initial datum is compactly supported. We prove the existence of a Lipschitz function $s^\infty$ of the unit sphere, such that $u(t,x)$ converges uniformly in $\mathbb{R}^N$, as $t$ goes to infinity, to $U_{c_*}\bigg(|x|-c_*t + \frac{N-1}{c_*} \mathrm{ln}t + s^\infty\Big(\frac{x}{|x|}\Big)\bigg)$, where $U_{c*}$ is the unique 1D travelling profile. This extends earlier results that identified the locations of the level sets of the sol…
We study the incompressible limit of the porous medium equation with a reaction term that is non-monotone with respect to the pressure variable. More specifically we consider reaction terms that are either bistable or monostable. We show that this type of reaction term generates many interesting differences in the qualitative behavior of solutions, in contrast to the problem with monotone reaction terms that have been extensively studied in recent literature. After characterizing the limit problem, we embark on a comprehensive study of the problem in one space dimension, to illustrate the deli…
Spatially periodic reaction-diffusion equations typically admit pulsating waves which describe the transition from one steady state to another. Due to the heterogeneity, in general such an equation is not invariant by rotation and therefore the speed of the pulsating wave may a priori depend on its direction. However, little is actually known in the literature about whether it truly does: surprisingly, it is even known in the one-dimensional monostable Fisher-KPP case that the speed is the same in the opposite directions despite the lack of symmetry. Here we investigate this issue in the bista…
This paper is concerned with propagation phenomena for the solutions of the Cauchy problem associated with a two-patch one-dimensional reaction-diffusion model. It is assumed that each patch has a relatively well-defined structure which is considered as homogeneous. A coupling interface condition between the two patches is involved. We first study the spreading properties of solutions in the case when the per capita growth rate in each patch is maximal at low densities, a configuration which we call the KPP-KPP case, and which turns out to have some analogies with the homogeneous KPP equation …
Reaction-diffusion equations appear in biology and chemistry, and combine linear diffusion with different kind of reaction terms. Some of them are remarkable from the mathematical point of view, since they admit families of travelling waves that describe the asymptotic behaviour of a larger class of solutions $0\leq u(x,t)\leq 1$ of the problem posed in the real line. We investigate here the existence of waves with constant propagation speed, when the linear diffusion is replaced by the "slow" doubly nonlinear diffusion. In the present setting we consider bistable reaction terms, which present…
In this paper we address the large-time behavior of solutions of bistable and multistable reaction-diffusion equations with discontinuities around the stable steady states. We show that the solution always converges to a special solution, which may either be a traveling wave in the bistable case, or more generally a terrace (i.e. a collection of stacked traveling waves with ordered speeds) in the multistable case.
In this paper, we consider the inverse reaction coefficient problems (IRCPs) for nonlocal diffusion equation and multi-term time-fractional nonlocal diffusion equation from the average nonlocal flux data in external reaction region. Based on the nonlocal maximum principle we established, the uniqueness theorem for IRCPs are proved.
We study the Cauchy problem for nonlocal reaction diffusion equations with bistable nonlinearity in 1D spatial domain and investigate the asymptotic behaviors of solutions with a one-parameter family of monotonically increasing and compactly supported initial data. We show that for small values of the parameter the corresponding solutions decay to 0, while for large values the related solutions converge to 1 uniformly on compacts. Moreover, we prove that the transition from extinction (converging to 0) to propagation (converging to 1) is sharp. Numerical results are provided to verify the theo…
We are interested in the threshold phenomena for propagation in nonlocal diffusion equations with some compactly supported initial data. In the so-called bistable and ignition cases, we provide the first quantitative estimates for such phenomena. The outcomes dramatically depend on the tails of the dispersal kernel and can take a large variety of different forms. The strategy is to combine sharp estimates of the tails of the sum of i.i.d. random variables (coming, in particular, from large deviation theory) and the construction of accurate sub-and super-solutions.
For a class of reaction-diffusion equations describing propagation phenomena, we prove that for any entire solution $u$, the level set $\{u=λ\}$ is a Lipschitz graph in the time direction if $λ$ is close to $1$. Under a further assumption that $u$ connects $0$ and $1$, it is shown that all level sets are Lipschitz graphs. By a blowing down analysis, the large scale motion law for these level sets and a characterization of the minimal speed for travelling waves are also given.
We introduce a spatially extended transport kinetic FitzHugh-Nagumo model with forced local interactions and prove that its hydrodynamic limit converges towards the classical nonlocal reaction-diffusion FitzHugh-Nagumo system. Our approach is based on a relative entropy method, where the macroscopic quantities of the kinetic model are compared with the solution to the nonlocal reaction-diffusion system. This approach allows to make the rigorous link between kinetic and reaction-diffusion models.
This work deals with a parabolic chemotaxis model with nonlinear diffusion and nonlocal reaction source. The problem is formulated on the whole space and, depending on a specific interplay between the coefficients associated to such diffusion and reaction, we establish that all given solutions are uniformly bounded in time.
We consider the problem of controlling parabolic semilinear equations arising in population dynamics, either in finite time or infinite time. These are the monostable and bistable equations on $(0,L)$ for a density of individuals $0 \leq y(t,x) \leq 1$, with Dirichlet controls taking their values in $[0,1]$. We prove that the system can never be steered to extinction (steady state $0$) or invasion (steady state $1$) in finite time, but is asymptotically controllable to $1$ independently of the size $L$, and to $0$ if the length $L$ of the interval domain is less than some threshold value $L^\s…
We devote this paper to the issue of existence of pulsating travelling front solutions for spatially periodic heterogeneous reaction-diffusion equations in arbitrary dimension, in both bistable and more general multistable frameworks. In the multistable case, the notion of a single front is not sufficient to understand the dynamics of solutions, and we instead observe the appearance of a so-called propagating terrace. This roughly refers to a finite family of stacked fronts connecting intermediate stable steady states whose speeds are ordered. Surprisingly, for a given equation, the shape of t…
This paper is concerned with qualitative properties of solutions to nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations of the form$$ \int\_{\mathbb{R}^N\setminus K} J(x-y)\,\big( u(y)-u(x) \big)\,\D y+f(u(x))=0, \quad x\in\R^N\setminus K,$$set in a perforated open set $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus K$, where $K\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a bounded compact "obstacle" and $f$ is a bistable nonlinearity. When $K$ is convex, we prove some Liouville-type results for solutions satisfying some asymptotic limiting conditions at infinity. We also establish a robustness result, assuming slightly relaxed conditions on $K$.
This paper is devoted to the analysis of non-negative solutions for the chemotaxis model with nonlocal source in bounded domain. The qualitative behavior of solutions is determined by the nonlinearity from the aggregation and the reaction. The nonlocal nonlinear Fisher-KPP reaction helps preventing blow-up phenomena in chemotaxis system. For appropriately chosen exponents, the global existence of classical solutions is proved with arbitrary initial data, where a modified Moser-Alikakos iteration method plays a key role in the a priori estimates.
We consider the system of reaction-diffusion equations proposed in [8] as a population dynamics model. The first equation stands for the population density and models the ecological effects, namely dispersion and growth with a Allee effect (bistable nonlinearity). The second one stands for the Allee threshold, seen as a trait mean, and accounts for evolutionary effects. Precisely, the Allee threshold is submitted to three main effects: dispersion (mirroring ecology), asymmetrical gene flow and selection. The strength of the latter depends on the population density and is thus coupling ecology …
