This article introduces a new approach to discrete curvature based on the concept of effective resistances. We propose a curvature on the nodes and links of a graph and present the evidence for their interpretation as a curvature. Notably, we find a relation to a number of well-established discrete curvatures (Ollivier, Forman, combinatorial curvature) and show evidence for convergence to continuous curvature in the case of Euclidean random graphs. Being both efficient to calculate and highly amenable to theoretical analysis, these resistance curvatures have the potential to shed new light on the theory of discrete curvature and its many applications in mathematics, network science, data science and physics.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite, combinatorial graph. We define a notion of curvature on the vertices $V$ via the inverse of the resistance distance matrix. We prove that this notion of curvature has a number of desirable properties. Graphs with curvature bounded from below by $K>0$ have diameter bounded from above. The Laplacian $L=D-A$ satisfies a Lichnerowicz estimate, there is a spectral gap $λ_2 \geq 2K$. We obtain matching two-sided bounds on the maximal commute time between any two vertices in terms of $|E| \cdot |V|^{-1} \cdot K^{-1}$. Moreover, we derive quantitative rates for the mixing ti…
We discuss notions of Gauss curvature and mean curvature for polyhedral surfaces. The discretizations are guided by the principle of preserving integral relations for curvatures, like the Gauss/Bonnet theorem and the mean-curvature force balance equation.
We study discrete curvatures computed from nets of curvature lines on a given smooth surface, and prove their uniform convergence to smooth principal curvatures. We provide explicit error bounds, with constants depending only on properties of the smooth limit surface and the shape regularity of the discrete net.
We introduce the discrete Einstein metrics as critical points of discrete energy on triangulated 3-manifolds, and study them by discrete curvature flow of second (fourth) order. We also study the convergence of the discrete curvature flow. Discrete curvature flow of second order is an analogue of smooth Ricci flow.
This survey article is about discrete constant mean curvature surfaces defined by an approach related to integrable systems techniques. We introduce the notion of discrete constant mean curvature surfaces by first introducing properties of smooth constant mean curvature surfaces. We describe the mathematical structure of the smooth surfaces using conserved quantities, which can be converted into a discrete theory in a natural way.
In this paper, we introduce a parameterized discrete curvature ($α$-curvature) for piecewise linear metrics on polyhedral surfaces, which is a generalization of the classical discrete curvature. A discrete uniformization theorem is established for the parameterized discrete curvature, which generalizes the discrete uniformization theorem obtained by Gu-Luo-Sun-Wu. We also prove the global rigidity of parameterized discrete curvature with respect to the discrete conformal factors, which confirms a generalized Luo conjecture on rigidity of discrete curvatures. We further introduce a parameterize…
We define Discrete Quasi-Einstein metrics (DQE-metrics) as the critical points of discrete total curvature functional on triangulated 3-manifolds. We study DQE-metrics by introducing some combinatorial curvature flows. We prove that these flows produce solutions which converge to discrete quasi-Einstein metrics when the initial energy is small enough. The proof relies on a careful analysis of discrete dual-Laplacians which we interpret as the Jacobian matrix of the curvature map. As a consequence, combinatorial curvature flow provides an algorithm to compute discrete sphere packing metrics wit…
We propose a unified definition for discrete analogues of constant mean curvature surfaces in spaces of constant curvature as a special case of discrete special isothermic nets. Bäcklund transformations and Lawson's correspondence are discussed. It is shown that the definition generalizes previous definitions and a construction for discrete cmc surfaces of revolution in space forms is provided.
We consider a general theory of curvatures of discrete surfaces equipped with edgewise parallel Gauss images, and where mean and Gaussian curvatures of faces are derived from the faces' areas and mixed areas. Remarkably these notions are capable of unifying notable previously defined classes of surfaces, such as discrete isothermic minimal surfaces and surfaces of constant mean curvature. We discuss various types of natural Gauss images, the existence of principal curvatures, constant curvature surfaces, Christoffel duality, Koenigs nets, contact element nets, s-isothermic nets, and interestin…
The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we generalize the definition of discrete isothermic surfaces. Compared with the previous ones, it covers more discrete surfaces, e.g., the associated families of discrete isothermic minimal and non-zero constant mean curvature (CMC in short) surfaces, whose counterpart in smooth case are isothermic surfaces. Second, we show that the discrete isothermic CMC surfaces can be obtained by the discrete holomorphic data (a solution of the additive rational Toda system) via the discrete generalized Weierstrass type representation.
A piecewise constant curvature manifold is a triangulated manifold that is assigned a geometry by specifying lengths of edges and stipulating that for a chosen background geometry (Euclidean, hyperbolic, or spherical), each simplex has an isometric embedding into the background geometry with the chosen edge lengths. Additional structure is defined either by giving a geometric structure to the Poincare dual of the triangulation or by assigning a discrete metric, a way of assigning length to oriented edges. This notion leads to a notion of discrete conformal structure, generalizing the discrete …
We show that the discrete principal nets in quadrics of constant curvature that have constant mixed area mean curvature can be characterized by the existence of a Königs dual in a concentric quadric.
This article is an application of the author's paper about a construction method for discrete constant negative Gaussian curvature surfaces, the nonlinear d'Alembert formula. The heart of this formula is the Birkhoff decomposition, and we give a simple algorithm for the Birkhoff decomposition. As an application, we draw figures of discrete constant negative Gaussian curvature surfaces given by this method.
Discrete conformal structure on polyhedral surfaces is a discrete analogue of the smooth conformal structure on surfaces that assigns discrete metrics by scalar functions defined on vertices. In this paper, we introduce combinatorial $α$-curvature for discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces, which is a parameterized generalization of the classical combinatorial curvature. Then we prove the local and global rigidity of combinatorial $α$-curvature with respect to discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces, which confirms parameterized Glickenstein rigidity conjecture. To s…
In this survey, we study three different notions of curvature that are defined on graphs, namely, combinatorial curvature, Bakry-Émery curvature, and Ollivier's Ricci curvature. For each curvature notion, the definition and its motivation from Riemannian geometry will be explained. Moreover, we bring together some global results and geometric concepts in Riemannian geometry that are related to curvature (e.g. Bonnet-Myers theorem, Laplacian operator, Lichnerowicz theorem, Cheeger constant), and then compare them to the discrete analogues in some (if not all) of the discrete curvature notions. …
We translate a classification scheme for periodic CMC surfaces developed by J. Dorfmeister and the author to discrete CMC surfaces in the sense of A. Bobenko and U. Pinkall. The scheme uses the dressing action on discrete CMC surfaces to arrive at a classification for periodic discrete CMC surfaces.
This paper investigates the combinatorial $α$-curvature for vertex scaling of piecewise hyperbolic metrics on polyhedral surfaces, which is a parameterized generalization of the classical combinatorial curvature. A discrete uniformization theorem for combinatorial $α$-curvature is established, which generalizes Gu-Guo-Luo-Sun-Wu's discrete uniformization theorem for classical combinatorial curvature. We further introduce combinatorial $α$-Yamabe flow and combinatorial $α$-Calabi flow for vertex scaling to find piecewise hyperbolic metrics with prescribed combinatorial $α$-curvatures. To handle…
A goal in network science is the geometrical characterization of complex networks. In this direction, we have recently introduced Forman's discretization of Ricci curvature to the realm of undirected networks. Investigation of this edge-centric network measure, Forman-Ricci curvature, in diverse model and real-world undirected networks revealed that the curvature measure captures several aspects of the organization of undirected complex networks. However, many important real-world networks are inherently directed in nature, and the definition of the Forman-Ricci curvature for undirected networ…
Motivated by a Möbius invariant subdivision scheme for polygons, we study a curvature notion for discrete curves where the cross-ratio plays an important role in all our key definitions. Using a particular Möbius invariant point-insertion-rule, comparable to the classical four-point-scheme, we construct circles along discrete curves. Asymptotic analysis shows that these circles defined on a sampled curve converge to the smooth curvature circles as the sampling density increases. We express our discrete torsion for space curves, which is not a Möbius invariant notion, using the cross-ratio and …
In this paper we define the class of constant affine mean curvature (CAMC) discrete asymptotic nets, which contains the well-known classes of affine spheres and affine minimal asymptotic nets. This class is defined by considering fields of compatible interpolating quadrics, i.e., quadrics that have common tangent planes at the edges of the net. We show that, for CAMC asymptotic nets, ruled discrete asymptotic nets is equivalent to ruled compatible interpolating quadrics. Moreover, we prove discrete counterparts of some known properties of the Demoulin transform of a smooth CAMC surface.
In a way similar to the continuous case formally, we define in different but equivalent manners the difference discrete connection and curvature on discrete vector bundle over the regular lattice as base space. We deal with the difference operators as the discrete counterparts of the derivatives based upon the differential calculus on the lattice. One of the definitions can be extended to the case over the random lattice. We also discuss the relation between our approach and the lattice gauge theory and apply to the discrete integrable systems.
Using Banchoff's discrete Morse Theory, in tandem with Bloch's result on the strong connection between the former and Forman's Morse Theory, and our own previous algorithm based on the later, we show that there exists a curvature-based, efficient Persistent Homology scheme for networks and hypernetworks. We also broaden the proposed method to include more general types of networks, by using Bloch's extension of Banchoff's work. Moreover, we show the connection between defect and Forman's Ricci curvature that exists in the combinatorial setting, thus explaining previous empirical results showin…
We show that the discrete approximate volume preserving mean curvature flow in the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^N$ starting near a strictly stable critical set $E$ of the perimeter converges in the long time to a translate of $E$ exponentially fast. As an intermediate result we establish a new quantitative estimate of Alexandrov type for periodic strictly stable constant mean curvature hypersurfaces. Finally, in the two dimensional case a complete characterization of the long time behaviour of the discrete flow with arbitrary initial sets of finite perimeter is provided.
We study a new notion of Ricci curvature that applies to Markov chains on discrete spaces. This notion relies on geodesic convexity of the entropy and is analogous to the one introduced by Lott, Sturm, and Villani for geodesic measure spaces. In order to apply to the discrete setting, the role of the Wasserstein metric is taken over by a different metric, having the property that continuous time Markov chains are gradient flows of the entropy. Using this notion of Ricci curvature we prove discrete analogues of fundamental results by Bakry--Emery and Otto--Villani. Furthermore we show that Ricc…
In this paper, we generalize our results in \cite{GX3} to triangulated surfaces in hyperbolic background geometry, which means that all triangles can be embedded in the standard hyperbolic space. We introduce a new discrete Gaussian curvature by dividing the classical discrete Gauss curvature by an area element, which could be taken as the area of the hyperbolic disk packed at each vertex. We prove that the corresponding discrete Ricci flow converges if and only if there exists a circle packing metric with zero curvature. We also prove that the flow converges if the initial curvatures are all …
Vertex scaling of piecewise linear metrics on surfaces introduced by Luo is a straightforward discretization of smooth conformal structures on surfaces. Combinatorial $α$-curvature for vertex scaling of piecewise linear metrics on surfaces is a discretization of Gaussian curvature on surfaces. In this paper, we investigate the prescribing combinatorial $α$-curvature problem on polyhedral surfaces. Using Gu-Luo-Sun-Wu's discrete conformal theory for piecewise linear metrics on surfaces and variational principles with constraints, we prove some Kazdan-Warner type theorems for prescribing combina…
We analyze both continuous and discrete-time Ollivier-Ricci curvatures of locally-finite weighted graphs $\G$ equipped with a given distance "$\dist$" (w.r.t. which $\G$ is metrically complete) and for general random walks. We show the continuous-time Ollivier-Ricci curvature is well-defined for a large class of Markovian and non-Markovian random walks and provide a criterion for existence of continuous-time Ollivier-Ricci curvature; the said results generalize the previous rather limited constructions in the literature. In addition, important properties of both discrete-time and continuous-ti…
Thurston's circle packing approximation of the Riemann Mapping (proven to give the Riemann Mapping in the limit by Rodin-Sullivan) is largely based on the theorem that any topological disk with a circle packing metric can be deformed into a circle packing metric in the disk with boundary circles internally tangent to the circle. The main proofs of the uniformization use hyperbolic volumes (Andreev) or hyperbolic circle packings (by Beardon and Stephenson). We reformulate these problems into a Euclidean context, which allows more general discrete conformal structures and boundary conditions. Th…
This paper discusses the question whether the discrete spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator is infinite or finite. The borderline-behavior of the curvatures for this problem will be completely determined.
The curvature regularities are well-known for providing strong priors in the continuity of edges, which have been applied to a wide range of applications in image processing and computer vision. However, these models are usually non-convex, non-smooth and highly non-linear, the first-order optimal condition of which are high-order partial differential equations. Thus, the numerical computation are extremely challenging. In this paper, we propose to estimate the discrete curvatures, i.e., mean curvature and Gaussian curvature, in the local neighborhood according to differential geometry theory.…

Weighted Gaussian Curvature is an important measurement for images. However, its conventional computation scheme has low performance, low accuracy and requires that the input image must be second order differentiable. To tackle these three issues, we propose a novel discrete computation scheme for the weighted Gaussian curvature. Our scheme does not require the second order differentiability. Moreover, our scheme is more accurate, has smaller support region and computationally more efficient than the conventional schemes. Therefore, our scheme holds promise for a large range of applications wh…
A discrete conformality for polyhedral metrics on surfaces is introduced in this paper which generalizes earlier work on the subject. It is shown that each polyhedral metric on a surface is discrete conformal to a constant curvature polyhedral metric which is unique up to scaling. Furthermore, the constant curvature metric can be found using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery.
We study Christoffel and Darboux transforms of discrete isothermic nets in 4-dimensional Euclidean space: definitions and basic properties are derived. Analogies with the smooth case are discussed and a definition for discrete Ribaucour congruences is given. Surfaces of constant mean curvature are special among all isothermic surfaces: they can be characterized by the fact that their parallel constant mean curvature surfaces are Christoffel and Darboux transforms at the same time. This characterization is used to define discrete nets of constant mean curvature. Basic properties of discrete net…
We establish what semi-discrete linear Weingarten surfaces with Weierstrass-type representations in $3$-dimensional Riemannian and Lorentzian spaceforms are, confirming their required properties regarding curvatures and parallel surfaces, and then classify them. We then define and analyze their singularities. In particular, we discuss singularities of (1) semi-discrete surfaces with non-zero constant Gaussian curvature, (2) parallel surfaces of semi-discrete minimal and maximal surfaces, and (3) semi-discrete constant mean curvature $1$ surfaces in de Sitter $3$-space. We include comparisons w…
We consider continuous-time (not necessarily finite) Markov chains on discrete spaces and identify a curvature-dimension inequality, the condition $CD_Υ(κ,\infty)$, which serves as a natural analogue of the classical Bakry-Émery condition $CD(κ,\infty)$ in several respects. In particular, it is tailor-made to the classical approach of proofing the modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality via computing and estimating the second time derivative of the entropy along the heat flow generated by the generator of the Markov chain. We prove that curvature bounds in the sense of $CD_Υ$ are preserved und…
Discrete time random walks on a finite set naturally translate via a one-to-one correspondence to discrete Laplace operators. Typically, Ollivier curvature has been investigated via random walks. We first extend the definition of Ollivier curvature to general weighted graphs and then give a strikingly simple representation of Ollivier curvature using the graph Laplacian. Using the Laplacian as a generator of a continuous time Markov chain, we connect Ollivier curvature with the heat equation which is strongly related to continuous time random walks. In particular, we prove that a lower bound o…
In this paper, we study planar polygonal curves from the variational methods. We show an unified interpretation of discrete curvatures and the Steiner-type formula by extracting the notion of the discrete curvature vector from the first variation of the length functional. Moreover, we determine the equilibrium curves for the length functional under the area-constraint condition and study their stability.
In this paper we define and analyze singularities of discrete linear Weingarten surfaces with Weierstrass-type representations in $3$-dimensional Riemannian and Lorentzian spaceforms. In particular, we discuss singularities of discrete surfaces with non-zero constant Gaussian curvature, and parallel surfaces of discrete minimal and maximal surfaces, and discrete constant mean curvature $1$ surfaces in de Sitter $3$-space, including comparisons with different previously known definitions of such singularities.
A piecewise flat manifold is a triangulated manifold given a geometry by specifying edge lengths (lengths of 1-simplices) and specifying that all simplices are Euclidean. We consider the variation of angles of piecewise flat manifolds as the geometry varies in a particular way, which we call a conformal variation. This variation generalizes variations within the class of circles with fixed intersection angles (such as circle packings) as well as other formulations of conformal variation of piecewise flat manifolds previously suggested. We describe the angle derivatives of the angles in two and…
