Using Banchoff's discrete Morse Theory, in tandem with Bloch's result on the strong connection between the former and Forman's Morse Theory, and our own previous algorithm based on the later, we show that there exists a curvature-based, efficient Persistent Homology scheme for networks and hypernetworks. We also broaden the proposed method to include more general types of networks, by using Bloch's extension of Banchoff's work. Moreover, we show the connection between defect and Forman's Ricci curvature that exists in the combinatorial setting, thus explaining previous empirical results showing very strong correlation between Persistent Homology results obtained using Forman's Morse Theory on the one hand, and Forman's Ricci curvature, on the other.
A goal in network science is the geometrical characterization of complex networks. In this direction, we have recently introduced Forman's discretization of Ricci curvature to the realm of undirected networks. Investigation of this edge-centric network measure, Forman-Ricci curvature, in diverse model and real-world undirected networks revealed that the curvature measure captures several aspects of the organization of undirected complex networks. However, many important real-world networks are inherently directed in nature, and the definition of the Forman-Ricci curvature for undirected networ…
We have performed an empirical comparison of two distinct notions of discrete Ricci curvature for graphs or networks, namely, the Forman-Ricci curvature and Ollivier-Ricci curvature. Importantly, these two discretizations of the Ricci curvature were developed based on different properties of the classical smooth notion, and thus, the two notions shed light on different aspects of network structure and behavior. Nevertheless, our extensive computational analysis in a wide range of both model and real-world networks shows that the two discretizations of Ricci curvature are highly correlated in m…
Motivated by the methods and results of manifold sampling based on Ricci curvature, we propose a similar approach for networks. To this end we make appeal to three types of discrete curvature, namely the graph Forman-, full Forman- and Haantjes-Ricci curvatures for edge-based and node-based sampling. We present the results of experiments on real life networks, as well as for square grids arising in Image Processing. Moreover, we consider fitting Ricci flows and we employ them for the detection of networks' backbone. We also develop embedding kernels related to the Forman-Ricci curvatures and e…
Hamilton's Ricci flow (RF) equations were recently expressed in terms of a sparsely-coupled system of autonomous first-order nonlinear differential equations for the edge lengths of a d-dimensional piecewise linear (PL) simplicial geometry. More recently, this system of discrete Ricci flow (DRF) equations was further simplified by explicitly constructing the Forman-Ricci tensor associated to each edge, thereby diagonalizing the first-order differential operator and avoiding the need to invert large sparse matrices at each time step. We recently showed analytically and numerically that these eq…
Let $M^n$ be a closed manifold of almost nonnegative sectional curvature and nonzero first de Rham cohomology group. For any $[θ] \in H^1_{dR}(M^n), [θ] \neq 0$, we show that the Morse- Novikov cohomology group $H^p(M^n, θ)$ vanishes for any $p$. A similar result holds for a closed manifold of almost nonnegative Ricci curvature under the additional assumption that its curvature operator is uniformly bounded from below.
Let $M^n$ be a compact K$\ddot{a}$hler manifold with almost nonnegative Ricci curvature and nonzero first Betti number. We show that the holomorphic Euler number of $M^n$ vanishes, which gives a new obstruction for compact complex manifolds admitting K$\ddot{a}$hler metrics with almost nonnegative Ricci curvature. A crucial step in the proof is to show a vanishing theorem of Dolbeault-Morse-Novikov cohomology.
In this paper, we study the shape of the min-max minimal hypersurface produced by Almgren-Pitts-Schoen-Simon \cite{AF62, AF65, P81, SS81} in a Riemannian manifold $(M^{n+1}, g)$ of positive Ricci curvature for all dimensions. The min-max hypersurface has a singular set of Hausdorff codimension $7$. We characterize the Morse index, area and multiplicity of this singular min-max hypersurface. In particular, we show that the min-max hypersurface is either orientable and has Morse index one, or is a double cover of a non-orientable stable minimal hypersurface. As an essential technical tool, we pr…
We prove that for every three dimensional manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and strictly mean convex boundary, there exists a Morse function so that each connected component of its level sets has a uniform diameter bound, which depends only on the lower bound of mean curvature. This gives an upper bound of Uryson 1-width for those three manifolds with boundary.
The auditory ossicles that are located in the middle ear are the smallest bones in the human body. Their damage will result in hearing loss. It is therefore important to be able to automatically diagnose ossicles' diseases based on Computed Tomography (CT) 3D imaging. However CT images usually include the whole head area, which is much larger than the bones of interest, thus the localization of the ossicles, followed by segmentation, both play a significant role in automatic diagnosis. The commonly employed local segmentation methods require manually selected initial points, which is a highly …
We prove that on a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $3$ or higher, with positive Ricci curvature, the Allen--Cahn min-max scheme (implemented by the first author and N. Wickramasekera in 2020), with prescribing function taken to be a non-zero constant $λ$, produces an embedded hypersurface of constant mean curvature $λ$ ($λ$-CMC). More precisely, we prove that the interface arising from said min-max contains no even-multiplicity minimal hypersurface and no quasi-embedded points (both of these occurrences are in principle possible in the conclusions of the aforementioned work by the fir…
