The numerical analysis of causal fermion systems is advanced by employing differentiable programming methods. The causal action principle for weighted counting measures is introduced for general values of the integer parameters $f$ (the particle number), $n$ (the spin dimension) and $m$ (the number of spacetime points). In the case $n=1$, the causal relations are clarified geometrically in terms of causal cones. Discrete Dirac spheres are introduced as candidates for minimizers for large $m$ in the cases $n=1, f=2$ and $n=2, f=4$. We provide a thorough numerical analysis of the causal action principle for weighted counting measures for large $m$ in the cases $n=1,2$ and $f=2,3,4$. Our numerical findings corroborate that all minimizers for large $m$ are good approximations of the discrete Dirac spheres. In the example $n=1, f=3$ it is explained how numerical minimizers can be visualized by projected spacetime plots. Methods and prospects are discussed to numerically investigate settings in which hitherto no analytic candidates for minimizers are known.
In the theory of causal fermion systems, the physical equations are obtained as the Euler-Lagrange equations of a causal variational principle. Studying families of critical measures of causal variational principles, a class of conserved surface layer integrals is found and analyzed.
The Lagrangian of the causal action principle is computed in Minkowski space for Dirac wave functions interacting with classical electromagnetism and linearized gravity in the limiting case when the ultraviolet cutoff is removed. Various surface layer integrals are computed in this limiting case.
We introduce a class of variational principles on measure spaces which are causal in the sense that they generate a relation on pairs of points, giving rise to a distinction between spacelike and timelike separation. General existence results are proved. It is shown in examples that minimizers need not be unique. Counter examples to compactness are discussed. The existence results are applied to variational principles formulated in indefinite inner product spaces.
It is shown that the linearized fields of causal variational principles give rise to linear bosonic quantum field theories. The properties of these field theories are studied and compared with the axioms of local quantum physics. Distinguished quasi-free states are constructed.
The least action principle, through its variational formulation, possesses a finalist aspect. It explicitly appears in the fractional calculus framework, where Euler-Lagrange equations obtained so far violate the causality principle. In order to clarify the relation between those two principles, we firstly remark that the derivatives used to described causal physical phenomena are in fact left ones. This leads to a formal approach of irreversible dynamics, where forward and backward temporal evolutions are decoupled. This formalism is then integrated to the Lagrangian systems, through a partic…
We formulate the initial value problem for causal variational principles in the continuous setting on a compact metric space. The existence and uniqueness of solutions is analyzed. The results are illustrated by simple examples.
The perturbation theory for critical points of causal variational principles is developed. We first analyze the class of perturbations obtained by multiplying the universal measure by a weight function and taking the push-forward under a diffeomorphism. Then the constructions are extended to convex combinations of such measures, leading to perturbation expansions for the mean and the fluctuation of the measure, both being coupled in higher order perturbation theory. It is explained how our methods and results apply to the causal action principle for causal fermion systems. It is shown how the …
Causal fermion systems are introduced as a general mathematical framework for formulating relativistic quantum theory. By specializing, we recover earlier notions like fermion systems in discrete space-time, the fermionic projector and causal variational principles. We review how an effect of spontaneous structure formation gives rise to a topology and a causal structure in space-time. Moreover, we outline how to construct a spin connection and curvature, leading to a proposal for a "quantum geometry" in the Lorentzian setting. We review recent numerical and analytical results on the support o…
The existence theory for solutions of the linearized field equations for causal variational principles is developed. We begin by studying the Cauchy problem locally in lens-shaped regions, defined as subsets of space-time which admit foliations by surface layers satisfying hyperbolicity conditions. We prove existence of weak solutions and show uniqueness up to vectors in the orthogonal complement of the jets used for testing. The connection between weak and strong solutions is analyzed. Global solutions are constructed by exhausting space-time by lens-shaped regions. We construct advanced and …
The connection between symmetries and conservation laws as made by Noether's theorem is extended to the context of causal variational principles and causal fermion systems. Different notions of continuous symmetries are introduced. It is proven that these symmetries give rise to corresponding conserved quantities, expressed in terms of so-called surface layer integrals. In a suitable limiting case, the Noether-like theorems for causal fermion systems reproduce charge conservation and the conservation of energy and momentum in Minkowski space. Thus the conservation of charge and energy-momentum…
The existence theory is developed for solutions of the inhomogeneous linearized field equations for causal variational principles. These equations are formulated weakly with an integral operator which is shown to be bounded and symmetric on a Hilbert space endowed with a suitably adapted weighted $L^2$-scalar product. Guided by the procedure in the theory of linear elliptic partial differential equations, we use the spectral calculus to define Sobolev-type Hilbert spaces and invert the linearized field operator as an operator between such function spaces. The uniqueness of the resulting weak s…
Considering second variations about a given minimizer of a causal variational principle, we derive positive functionals in space-time. It is shown that the strict positivity of these functionals ensures that the minimizer is nonlinearly stable within the class of compactly supported variations with local fragmentation. As applications, we endow the space of jets in space-time with Hilbert space structures and derive a positive surface layer integral on solutions of the linearized field equations.
The support of minimizing measures of the causal variational principle on the sphere is analyzed. It is proven that in the case $τ>\sqrt{3}$, the support of every minimizing measure is contained in a finite number of real analytic curves which intersect at a finite number of points. In the case $τ>\sqrt{6}$, the support is proven to have Hausdorff dimension at most $6/7$.
We derive the Euler-Lagrange equations for minimizers of causal variational principles in the non-compact setting with constraints, possibly prescribing symmetries. Considering first variations, we show that the minimizing measure is supported on the intersection of a hyperplane with a level set of a function which is homogeneous of degree two. Moreover, we perform second variations to obtain that the compact operator representing the quadratic part of the action is positive semi-definite. The key ingredient for the proof is a subtle adaptation of the Lagrange multiplier method to variational …
We prove the existence of minimizers in the class of negative definite measures on compact subsets of momentum space in the homogeneous setting under several side conditions (constraints). The method is to employ Prohorov's theorem. Given a minimizing sequence of negative definite measures, we show that, under suitable side conditions, a unitarily equivalent subsequence thereof is bounded. By restricting attention to compact subsets, from Prohorov's theorem we deduce the existence of minimizers in the class of negative definite measures.
The theory of causal fermion systems is a recent approach to fundamental physics. Giving quantum mechanics, general relativity and quantum field theory as limiting cases, it is a candidate for a unified physical theory. The dynamics is described by a novel variational principle, the so-called causal action principle. The causal action principle does not rely on a presupposed space-time structure. Instead, it is a variational principle for space-time itself as well as for all structures in space-time (like particles, fields, etc.). After a general motivation and introduction, we report on mathe…
A class of causal variational principles on a compact manifold is introduced and analyzed both numerically and analytically. It is proved under general assumptions that the support of a minimizing measure is either completely timelike, or it is singular in the sense that its interior is empty. In the examples of the circle, the sphere and certain flag manifolds, the general results are supplemented by a more detailed and explicit analysis of the minimizers. On the sphere, we get a connection to packing problems and the Tammes distribution. Moreover, the minimal action is estimated from above a…
We prove the existence of minimizers of causal variational principles on second countable, locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Moreover, the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations are derived. The method is to first prove the existence of minimizers of the causal variational principle restricted to compact subsets for a lower semi-continuous Lagrangian. Exhausting the underlying topological space by compact subsets and rescaling the corresponding minimizers, we obtain a sequence which converges vaguely to a regular Borel measure of possibly infinite total volume. It is shown that, for continuous…
The theory of causal fermion systems is a new physical theory which aims to describe a fundamental level of physical reality. Its mathematical core is the causal action principle. In this thesis, we develop a formalism which connects the causal action principle to a suitable notion of fields on space-time. We derive field equations from the causal action principle and find that the dynamics induced by the field equations conserve a symplectic form which gives rise to an Hamiltonian time evolution if the causal fermion system admits a notion of time. In this way, we establish the dynamics of ca…
Based on conservation laws for surface layer integrals for critical points of causal variational principles, it is shown how jet spaces can be endowed with an almost-complex structure. We analyze under which conditions the almost-complex structure can be integrated to a canonical complex structure. Combined with the scalar product expressed by a surface layer integral, we obtain a complex Hilbert space $\mathfrak{h}$. The Euler-Lagrange equations of the causal variational principle describe a nonlinear time evolution on $\mathfrak{h}$. Rewriting multilinear operators on $\mathfrak{h}$ as linea…
We study the interplay between the global causal and geometric structures of a spacetime $(M,g)$ and the features of a given smooth $\mathbb{R}$-action $ρ$ on $M$ whose orbits are all causal curves, building on classic results about Lie group actions on manifolds described by Palais. In the first part of this paper, we prove that $ρ$ is free and proper (so that $M$ splits topologically) provided that $(M,g)$ is strongly causal and $ρ$ does not have what we call weakly ancestral pairs, a notion which admits a natural interpretation in terms of "cosmic censorship". Accordingly, such condition ho…
Causal variational principles, which are the analytic core of the physical theory of causal fermion systems, are found to have an underlying Hamiltonian structure, giving a formulation of the dynamics in terms of physical fields in space-time. After generalizing causal variational principles to a class of lower semi-continuous Lagrangians on a smooth, possibly non-compact manifold, the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations are derived. In the first part, it is shown under additional smoothness assumptions that the space of solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations has the structure of a sympl…
We provide a method for constructing (possibly non-trivial) measures on non-locally compact Polish subspaces of infinite-dimensional separable Banach spaces which, under suitable assumptions, are minimizers of causal variational principles in the non-locally compact setting. Moreover, for non-trivial minimizers the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations are derived. The method is to exhaust the underlying Banach space by finite-dimensional subspaces and to prove existence of minimizers of the causal variational principle restricted to these finite-dimensional subsets of the Polish space under …
This monograph introduces the basic concepts of the theory of causal fermion systems, a recent approach to the description of fundamental physics. The theory yields quantum mechanics, general relativity and quantum field theory as limiting cases and is therefore a candidate for a unified physical theory. From the mathematical perspective, causal fermion systems provide a general framework for describing and analyzing non-smooth geometries and "quantum geometries." The dynamics is described by a novel variational principle, called the causal action principle. In addition to the basics, the book…
