It is important to study the global behavior of solutions to systems of ordinary differential equations describing the transmission dynamics of infectious disease. In this paper, we present a different approach from the Lyapunov function used in most of them. This approach is based on the Poincaré compactification. We then apply the method to a SIR endemic model as a test case, and discuss its effectiveness and the potential applications of this approach. In addition, we refine the discussion of dynamics near the equilibrium, derive the asymptotic behavior, and mention its relation to the basic reproduction number.
The SIR model is a three-compartment model of the time development of an epidemic. After normalizing the dependent variables, the model is a system of two non-linear differential equations for the susceptible proportion $S$ and the infected proportion $I$. After normalizing the time variable there is only one remaining parameter. This largely expository article is mainly about aspects of this model that can be understood with calculus. It also discusses an alternative exactly solvable model that appeared in early work of Kermack and McKendrick. This model may be obtained by replacing $SI$ fact…
We study the collective dynamics of a multi-particle system with three epidemic states as an internal state. For the collective modeling of active particle system, we adopt modeling spirits from the swarmalator model and the SIR epidemic model for the temporal evolution of particles' position and internal states. Under suitable assumptions on system parameters and non-collision property of initial spatial configuration, we show that the proposed model does not admit finite-time collisions so that the standard Cauchy-Lipschitz theory can be applied for the global well-posedness. For the relaxat…
In this paper, we consider a stochastic epidemic model with time delay and general incidence rate. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of the global positive solution. By using the Krylov-Bogoliubov method, we obtain the existence of invariant measures. Furthermore , we study a special case where the incidence rate is bilinear with distributed time delay. When the basic reproduction number R0 < 1, the analysis of the asymptotic behavior around the disease-free equilibrium E0 is provided while when R0 > 1, we prove that the invariant measure is unique and ergodic. The numerical simulati…
This paper is concerned with the conditions of existence and nonexistence of traveling wave solutions (TWS) for a class of discrete diffusive epidemic models. We find that the existence of TWS is determined by the so-called basic reproduction number and the critical wave speed: When the basic reproduction number R0 greater than 1, there exists a critical wave speed c* > 0, such that for each c >= c * the system admits a nontrivial TWS and for c < c* there exists no nontrivial TWS for the system. In addition, the boundary asymptotic behaviour of TWS is obtained by constructing a suitable Lyapun…
The main purpose of this paper is to study the local dynamics and bifurcations of a discrete-time SIR epidemiological model. The existence and stability of disease-free and endemic fixed points are investigated along with a fairly complete classification of the systems bifurcations, in particular, a complete analysis on local stability and codimension 1 bifurcations in the parameter space. Sufficient conditions for positive trajectories are given. The existence of a 3-cycle is shown, which implies the existence of cycles of arbitrary length by the celebrated Sharkovskii's theorem. Generacity o…
In this paper we consider an SIRS epidemic model under a general assumption of density-dependent mortality. We prove the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium and propose a Lyapunov function that allows to demonstrate the global stability of the (unique) endemic state under broad conditions.
The aim of this paper is to study the stochastic SIR equation with general incidence functional responses and in which both natural death rates and the incidence rate are perturbed by white noises. We derive a sufficient and almost necessary condition for the extinction and permanence for an epidemic system with multi noises \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} dS(t)=\big[a_1-b_1S(t)-I(t)f(S(t),I(t))\big]dt + σ_1 S(t) dB_1(t) -I(t)g(S(t),I(t))dB_3(t),\\ dI(t)=\big[-b_2I(t) + I(t)f(S(t),I(t))\big]dt + σ_2I(t) dB_2(t) + I(t)g(S(t),I(t))dB_3(t). \end{cases} \end{equation*} Moreover, the rate of all co…
We present the generalised mean-field and pairwise models for non-Markovian epidemics on networks with arbitrary recovery time distributions. First we consider a hyperbolic system, where the population of infective nodes and links are structured by age since infection. By solving the partial differential equations, the model is transformed into a system of integro-differential equations, which is analysed both from a mathematical and numerical point of view. We analytically study the asymptotic behaviour of the generalised model and provide a rigorous mathematical proof of the conjecture on th…
Exploiting the power of the expectation operator and indicator (or Bernoulli) random variables, we present the exact governing equations for both the SIR and SIS epidemic models on \emph{networks}. Although SIR and SIS are basic epidemic models, deductions from their exact stochastic equations \textbf{without} making approximations (such as the common mean-field approximation) are scarce. An exact analytic solution of the governing equations is highly unlikely to be found (for any network) due to the appearing pair (and higher order) correlations. Nevertheless, the maximum average fraction $y_…
This paper studies the spread dynamics of a stochastic SIRS epidemic model with nonlinear incidence and varying population size, which is formulated as a piecewise deterministic Markov process. A threshold dynamic determined by the basic reproduction number $\mathcal{R}_{0}$ is established: the disease can be eradicated almost surely if $\mathcal{R}_{0}<1$, while the disease persists almost surely if $\mathcal{R}_{0}>1$. The existing method for analyzing ergodic behavior of population systems has been generalized. The modified method weakens the required conditions and has no limitations for b…
This paper considers the classical SIR epidemic model driven by a multidimensional Lévy jump process. We consecrate to develop a mathematical method to obtain the asymptotic properties of the perturbed model. Our method differs from previous approaches by the use of the comparison theorem, mutually exclusive possibilities lemma, and some new techniques of the stochastic differential systems. In this framework, we derive the threshold which can determine the existence of a unique ergodic stationary distribution or the extinction of the epidemic. Numerical simulations about different perturbatio…
We study extensions of the classical SIR model of epidemic spread. First, we consider a single population modified SIR epidemics model in which the contact rate is allowed to be an arbitrary function of the fraction of susceptible and infected individuals. This allows one to model either the reaction of individuals to the information about the spread of the disease or the result of government restriction measures, imposed to limit social interactions and contain contagion. We study the effect of both smooth dependancies of the contact rate for which we prove the existence of a threshold phenom…
We study a class of SIRS epidemic dynamical models with a general non-linear incidence rate and transfer from infectious to susceptible. The incidence rate includes a wide range of monotonic, con- cave incidence rates and some non-monotonic or concave cases. We apply LaSalle's invariance principle and Lyapunov's direct method to prove that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number R0 lesser or equal to 1, and the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if R0 > 1, under some conditions imposed on the incidence function f(S; I).
We propose two SIR models which incorporate sociological behavior of groups of individuals. It is these differences in behaviors which impose different infection rates on the individual susceptible populations, rather than biological differences. We compute the basic reproduction number for each model, as well as analyze the sensitivity of $R_0$ to changes in sociological parameter values.
In this note, we describe simple generalizations of the basic SIR model for epidemic, in case of a multi-region scenario, to be used for predicting the COVID-19 epidemic spread in Italy.
Recently, emerging epidemics like COVID-19 and its variants require predictive mathematical models to implement suitable responses in order to limit their negative and profound impact on society. The SIR (Susceptible-InfectedRemoved) system is a straightforward mathematical formulation to model the dissemination of many infectious diseases. The present paper reports novel theoretical and analytical results for a perturbed version of an SIR model with Gamma-distributed delay. Notably, our epidemic model is represented by Itô-L'evy stochastic differential equations in order to simulate sudden an…
We consider the problem of controlling an SIR-model epidemic by temporarily reducing the rate of contact within a population. The control takes the form of a multiplicative reduction in the contact rate of infectious individuals. The control is allowed to be applied only over a finite time interval, while the objective is to minimize the total number of individuals infected in the long-time limit, subject to some cost function for the control. We first consider the no-cost scenario and analytically determine the optimal control and solution. We then study solutions when a cost of intervention …
We study the spread of an SIRS-type epidemic with vaccination on network. Starting from an exact Markov description of the model, we investigate the mean epidemic lifetime by providing a sufficient condition for fast extinction that depends on the model parameters and the topology of the network. Then, we pass to consider a firstorder mean-field approximation of the exact model and its stability properties, by relying on the graph-theoretical notion of equitable partition. In the case of graphs possessing this kind of partition, we prove that the endemic equilibrium can be computed by using a …
Investigating the effect of adaptive optimal control function in epidemic dynamics: predictions and strategy evolution based on SIR/V game theoretic framework
Mathematical models are instrumental to forecast the spread of pathogens and to evaluate the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical measures. A plethora of optimal strategies has been recently developed to minimize either the infected peak prevalence (IPP) or the epidemic final size (EFS). While most of the control strategies optimize a simple cost function along a fixed finite-time horizon, no consensus has been reached about how to simultaneously handle the IPP, the EFS, and the avoiding of new cycles of infections rebounding. In this work, based on the characterization of the dynamical behavio…
The spread of an infectious disease depends on intrinsic properties of the disease as well as the connectivity and actions of the population. This study investigates the dynamics of an SIR type model which accounts for human tendency to avoid infection while also maintaining preexisting, interpersonal relationships. Specifically, we use a network model in which individuals probabilistically deactivate connections to infected individuals and later reconnect to the same individuals upon recovery. To analyze this network model, a mean field approximation consisting of a system of fourteen ordinar…
The spread of an epidemic process is considered in the context of a spatial SIR stochastic model that includes a parameter $0\le p\le 1$ that assigns weights $p$ and $1- p$ to global and local infective contacts respectively. The model was previously studied by other authors in different contexts. In this work we characterized the behavior of the system around the threshold for epidemic spreading. We first used a deterministic approximation of the stochastic model and checked the existence of a threshold value of $p$ for exponential epidemic spread. An analytical expression, which defines a fu…
The presence of a large number of infected individuals with few or no symptoms is an important epidemiological difficulty and the main mathematical feature of COVID-19. The A-SIR model, i.e. a SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Removed) model with a compartment for infected individuals with no symptoms or few symptoms was proposed by Giuseppe Gaeta, arXiv:2003.08720 [q-bio.PE] (2020). In this paper we investigate a slightly generalized version of the same model and propose a scheme for fitting the parameters of the model to real data using the time series only of the deceased individuals. The scheme is…
In this paper, we develop a multi-group epidemic framework via virtual dispersal where the risk of infection is a function of the residence time and local environmental risk. This novel approach eliminates the need to define and measure contact rates that are used in the traditional multi-group epidemic models with heterogeneous mixing. We apply this approach to a general $n$-patch SIS model whose basic reproduction number $\mathcal R_0 $ is computed as a function of a patch residence-times matrix $\mathbb P$. Our analysis implies that the resulting $n$-patch SIS model has robust dynamics when…
We define and study an open stochastic SIR (Susceptible -- Infected -- Removed) model on a graph in order to describe the spread of an epidemic on a cattle trade network with epidemiological and demographic dynamics occurring over the same time scale. Population transition intensities are assumed to be density-dependent with a constant component, the amplitude of which determines the overall scale of the population process. Standard branching approximation results for the epidemic process are first given, along with a numerical computation method for the probability of a major epidemic outbrea…

This paper proposes a data-driven set-based estimation algorithm for a class of nonlinear systems with polynomial nonlinearities. Using the system's input-output data, the proposed method computes a set that guarantees the inclusion of the system's state in real-time. Although the system is assumed to be a polynomial type, the exact polynomial functions, and their coefficients are assumed to be unknown. To this end, the estimator relies on offline and online phases. The offline phase utilizes past input-output data to estimate a set of possible coefficients of the polynomial system. Then, usin…
