Characteristic class relations in Dolbeault cohomology follow from the existence of a holomorphic Cartan geometry (for example, a holomorphic conformal structure or a holomorphic projective connection). These relations can be calculated directly from the representation theory of the structure group, without selecting any metric or connection or having any knowledge of the Dolbeault cohomology groups of the manifold. This paper improves on its predecessor by allowing noncompact and non-Kähler manifolds and by deriving invariants in cohomology of vector bundles, not just in scalar Dolbeault cohomology, and computing relations involving Chern--Simons invariants in Dolbeault cohomology. For the geometric structures previously considered in its predecessor, this paper gives stronger results and simplifies the computations. It gives the first results on Chern--Simons invariants of Cartan geometries.
The extension functors between categories of Cartan geometries can be used to define different categories of Cartan geometries with additional morphisms. The Cartan geometries modeled on skeletons can be used for the description of such categories of Cartan geometries and therefore we develop the theory of Cartan geometries modeled on skeletons, in detail. In particular, we show that there are functors from the categories of Cartan geometries with morphisms induced by extension functors to certain categories of Cartan geometries modeled on skeletons with the usual morphisms. We study how to co…
This is a survey paper dealing with holomorphic G-structures and holomorphic Cartan geometries on compact complex manifolds. Our emphasis is on the foliated case: holomorphic foliations with transverse (branched or generalized) holomorphic Cartan geometries.
In this paper we show that Cartan geometries can be studied via transitive Lie groupoids endowed with a special kind of vector-valued multiplicative 1-forms. This viewpoint leads us to a more general notion, that of Cartan bundle, which encompasses both Cartan geometries and G-structures.
We introduce linear Dirac and generalized complex structures on Cartan geometries and give criteria for Dirac subalgebras of $\frkg\ltimes\frkg^*$ representing Dirac structures on a Cartan geometry. We prove that there is a bijection between the linear generalized structures on a torsion free Cartan geometry and the equivariant generalized structures on its corresponding homogeneous space.
In this paper, we show that associated to any coisotropic Cartan geometry there is a twisted Courant algebroid. This includes in particular parabolic geometries. Using this twisted Courant structure, we give some new results about the Cartan curvature and the Weyl structure of a parabolic geometry. As more direct applications, we have Lie 2-algebra and 3D AKSZ sigma model with background associated to any coisotropic Cartan geometry.
This is largely a survey paper, dealing with Cartan geometries in the complex analytic category. We first remind some standard facts going back to the seminal works of F. Klein, E. Cartan and C. Ehresmann. Then we present the concept of a branched holomorphic Cartan geometry which was introduced by the authors in [BD]. It generalizes to higher dimension the notion of a branched (flat) complex projective structure on a Riemann surface introduced by Mandelbaum. This new framework is much more flexible than that of the usual holomorphic Cartan geometries (e.g. all compact complex projective manif…
In [DM] it was asked whether all flat holomorphic Cartan geometries (G,H) on a complex torus are translation invariant. We answer this affimatively under the assumption that the complex Lie group G is affine. More precisely, we show that every holomorphic Cartan geometry of type (G,H), with G a complex affine Lie group, on any complex torus is translation invariant.
We describe invariant principal and Cartan connections on homogeneous principal bundles and show how to calculate the curvature and the holonomy; in the case of an invariant Cartan connection we give a formula for the infinitesimal automorphisms. The main result of this paper is that the above calculations are purely algorithmic. As an example of an homogeneous parabolic geometry we treat a conformal structure on the product of two spheres.
In this paper, we consider the problem of building a conformal boundary, embedding a pseudo-Riamnnian manifold as an open subset of a bigger one. We get first results about conformal maximality. We also show that in dimension $\geq 3$, there are rigidity properties for the topological boundary of such a conformal embedding. We get results of the same kind about general Cartan geometries.
We show that compact complex manifolds of algebraic dimension zero bearing a holomorphic Cartan geometry of algebraic type have infinite fundamental group. This generalizes the main Theorem in [DM] where the same result was proved for the special cases of holomorphic affine connections and holomorphic conformal structures.
We provide an intrinsic notion of curved cosets for arbitrary Cartan geometries, simplifying the existing construction of curved orbits for a given holonomy reduction. To do this, we define an intrinsic holonomy group, which is shown to coincide precisely with the standard definition of the holonomy group for Cartan geometries in terms of an associated principal connection. These curved cosets retain many characteristics of their homogeneous counterparts, and they behave well under the action of automorphisms. We conclude the paper by using the machinery developed to generalize the de Rham dec…
Lightlike Cartan geometries are introduced as Cartan geometries modelled on the future lightlike cone in Lorentz-Minkowski spacetime. Then, we provide an approach to the study of lightlike manifolds from this point of view. It is stated that every lightlike Cartan geometry on a manifold $N$ provides a lightlike metric $h$ with radical distribution globally spanned by a vector field $Z$. For lightlike hypersurfaces of a Lorentz manifold, we give the condition that characterizes when the pull-back of the Levi-Civita connection form of the ambient manifold is a lightlike Cartan connection on such…
We prove analogues for Cartan geometries of Gromov's major theorems on automorphisms of rigid geometric structures. The starting point is a Frobenius theorem, which says that infinitesimal automorphisms of sufficiently high order integrate to local automorphisms. Consequences include a stratification theorem describing the configuration of orbits for local Killing fields in a compact real-analytic Cartan geometry, and an open-dense theorem in the smooth case, which says that if there is a dense orbit, then there is an open, dense, locally homogeneus subset. Combining the Frobenius theorem with…
We study local automorphisms of holomorphic Cartan geometries. This leads to classification results for compact complex manifolds admitting Cartan geometries. We prove that a compact Calabi-Yau manifold bearing a holomorphic Cartan geometry of algebraic type admits a finite unramified cover which is a complex torus.
We prove that the only Calabi--Yau projective manifolds which bear holomorphic Cartan geometries are precisely the abelian varieties. (Nous démontrons que les seules variétés projectives de Calabi--Yau qui possèdent des géométrie holomorphes de Cartan sont les variétés abéliennes.)
Introducing the deformation theory of holomorphic Cartan geometries, we compute infinitesimal automorphisms and infinitesimal deformations. We also prove the existence of a semi-universal deformation of a holomorphic Cartan geometry.
We prove that any compact Kähler manifold bearing a holomorphic Cartan geometry contains a rational curve just when the Cartan geometry is inherited from a holomorphic Cartan geometry on a lower dimensional compact Kähler manifold.
We develop a holonomy reduction procedure for general Cartan geometries. We show that, given a reduction of holonomy, the underlying manifold naturally decomposes into a disjoint union of initial submanifolds. Each such submanifold corresponds to an orbit of the holonomy group on the modelling homogeneous space and carries a canonical induced Cartan geometry. The result can therefore be understood as a `curved orbit decomposition'. The theory is then applied to the study of several invariant overdetermined differential equations in projective, conformal and CR-geometry. This makes use of an eq…
In this continuation of \cite{BDS}, we investigate the deformations of holomorphic Cartan geometries where the underlying complex manifold is allowed to move. The space of infinitesimal deformations of a flat holomorphic Cartan geometry is computed. We show that the natural forgetful map, from the infinitesimal deformations of a flat holomorphic Cartan geometry to the infinitesimal deformations of the underlying flat principal bundle on the topological manifold, is an isomorphism.
We prove that if a Calabi--Yau manifold $M$ admits a holomorphic Cartan geometry, then $M$ is covered by a complex torus. This is done by establishing the Bogomolov inequality for semistable sheaves on compact Kähler manifolds. We also classify all holomorphic Cartan geometries on rationally connected complex projective manifolds.

We calculate relations on characteristic classes which are obstructions preventing closed Kähler manifolds from carrying holomorphic Cartan geometries. We apply these relations to give global constraints on the phase spaces of complex analytic determined and underdetermined systems of differential equations.
We prove a theorem relating the automorphism group of a Cartan geometry to the group on which the geometry is modeled: a component of the adjoint representation of the first embeds in the adjoint representation of the second. Consequences of the theorem include general bounds on the rank and nilpotence degree of an automorphism group; a result asserting local homogeneity and completeness of parabolic geometries admitting a maximal-rank group of automorphisms; and a local freeness theorem for actions additionally preserving a continuous volume form.
We construct infinite families of regular normal Cartan geometries with nonvanishing curvature and essential automorphisms on closed manifolds for many higher rank parabolic model geometries. To do this, we use particular elements of the kernel of the Kostant Laplacian to construct homogeneous Cartan geometries of the desired type, giving a global realization of an elegant local construction due to Kruglikov and The, and then modify these homogeneous geometries to make their base manifolds compact. As a demonstration, we apply the construction to quaternionic contact structrures of mixed signa…
This paper is a study of the relationship between two constructions associated with Cartan geometries, both of which involve Lie algebroids: the Cartan algebroid, due to [Blaom A.D., Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 358 (2006), 3651-3671], and tractor calculus [Cap A., Gover A.R., Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 354 (2001), 1511-1548].
We introduce the concept of a branched holomorphic Cartan geometry. It generalizes to higher dimension the definition of branched (flat) complex projective structure on a Riemann surface introduced by Mandelbaum. This new framework is much more flexible than that of the usual holomorphic Cartan geometries. We show that all compact complex projective manifolds admit branched flat holomorphic projective structure. We also give an example of a non-flat branched holomorphic normal projective structure on a compact complex surface. It is known that no compact complex surface admits such a structure…
Consider an anchored bundle $(E,ρ)$, i.e. a vector bundle $E\to M$ equipped with a bundle map $ρ\colon E \to TM$ covering the identity. M.~Kapranov showed in the context of Lie-Rinehard algebras that there exists an extension of this anchored bundle to an infinite rank universal free Lie algebroid $FR(E)\supset E$. We adapt his construction to the case of an anchored bundle equipped with an arbitrary connection, $(E,\nabla)$, and show that it gives rise to a unique connection $\tilde \nabla$ on $FR(E)$ which is compatible with its Lie algebroid structure, thus turning $(FR(E), \tilde \nabla)$ …
The aim of the present paper is to lay the foundation for a theory of Ehresmann structures in positive characteristic, generalizing the Frobenius-projective and Frobenius-affine structures defined in the previous work. This theory deals with atlases of étale coordinate charts on varieties modeled on homogenous spaces of algebraic groups, which we call Frobenius-Ehresmann structures. These structures are compared with Cartan geometries in positive characteristic, as well as with higher-dimensional generalizations of dormant indigenous bundles. In particular, we investigate the conditions under …
The chains studied in this paper generalize Chern-Moser chains for CR structures. They form a distinguished family of one dimensional submanifolds in manifolds endowed with a parabolic contact structure. Both the parabolic contact structure and the system of chains can be equivalently encoded as Cartan geometries (of different types). The aim of this paper is to study the relation between these two Cartan geometries for Lagrangean contact structures and partially integrable almost CR structures. We develop a general method for extending Cartan geometries which generalizes the Cartan geometry i…
We exploit the Cartan-Kähler theory to prove the local existence of real analytic quaternionic contact structures for any prescribed values of the respective curvature functions and their covariant derivatives at a given point on a manifold. We show that, in a certain sense, the different real analytic quaternionic contact geometries in $4n+3$ dimensions depend, modulo diffeomorphisms, on $2n+2$ real analytic functions of $2n+3$ variables.
We extend the notion of (branched) holomorphic Cartan geometry on a complex manifold to the context of Sasakian manifolds. Branched holomorphic Cartan geometries on Sasakian Calabi-Yau manifolds are investigated.
Motivated by the rich geometry of conformal Riemannian manifolds and by the recent development of geometries modeled on homogeneous spaces $G/P$ with $G$ semisimple and $P$ parabolic, Weyl structures and preferred connections are introduced in this general framework. In particular, we extend the notions of scales, closed and exact Weyl connections, and Rho--tensors, we characterize the classes of such objects, and we use the results to give a new description of the Cartan bundles and connections for all parabolic geometries.
In his 1910 paper, Élie Cartan gave a tour-de-force solution to the (local) equivalence problem for generic rank 2 distributions on 5-manifolds, i.e. $(2,3,5)$-distributions. From a modern perspective, these structures admit equivalent descriptions as (regular, normal) parabolic geometries modelled on a quotient of $G_2$, but this is not transparent from his article: indeed, the Cartan "connection" of 1910 is not a "Cartan connection" in the modern sense. We revisit the classification of multiply-transitive $(2,3,5)$-distributions from a modern Cartan-geometric perspective, incorporating $G_2$…
The paper is focused on the existence problem of attractors for foliations. Since the existence of an attractor is a transversal property of the foliation, it is natural to consider foliations admitting transversal geometric structures. As transversal structures are chosen Cartan geometries due to their universality. The existence problem of an attractor on a complete Cartan foliation is reduced to a similar problem for the action of its structure Lie group on a certain smooth manifold. In the case of a complete Cartan foliation with a structure subordinated to a transformation group, the prob…
There are two well-known parabolic split $G_2$-geometries in dimension five, $(2,3,5)$-distributions and $G_2$-contact structures. Here we link these two geometries with yet another $G_2$-related contact structure, which lives on a seven-manifold. We present a natural geometric construction of a Lie contact structure on a seven-dimensional bundle over a five-manifold endowed with a $(2,3,5)$-distribution. For a class of distributions the induced Lie contact structure is constructed explicitly and we determine its symmetries. We further study the relation between the canonical normal Cartan con…
We provide five examples of conformal geometries which are naturally associated with ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The first example describes a one-to-one correspondence between the Wuenschmann class of 3rd order ODEs considered modulo contact transformations of variables and (local) 3-dimensional conformal Lorentzian geometries. The second example shows that every point equivalent class of 3rd order ODEs satisfying the Wuenschmann and the Cartan conditions define a 3-dimensional Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl geometry. The third example associates to each point equivalence class of 3rd o…
We study a geometry associated with rank 3 distributions in dimension 8, whose symbol algebra is constant and has a simple Lie algebra sp(3,R) as Tanaka prolongation. We restrict our considerations to only those distributions that are defined in terms of a systems of ODEs of the form $\dot{z}_{ij}=\frac{\partial^2 f(\dot{x}_1,\dot{x}_2)}{\partial \dot{x}_i\partial \dot{x}_j}$, $i\leq j=1,2$. For them we built the full system of local differential invariants, by solving an equivalence problem a'la Cartan, in the spirit of his 1910's five variable paper. The considered geometry is a parabolic ge…
This note shows the compatibility of the differential geometric and the topological formulations of equivariant characteristic classes for a compact connected Lie group action.
We introduce and discuss (local) symmetries of geometric structures. These symmetries generalize the classical (locally) symmetric spaces to various other geometries. Our main tools are homogeneous Cartan geometries and their explicit description. This allows us to describe the structure of symmetric geometric structures and to provide a general construction of such structures. Since we can view the classical (locally) symmetric spaces as special case, this allows us to classify various geometric structures on semisimple symmetric spaces. Then we investigate the case of symmetric parabolic geo…
This work is a spin-off of an on-going programme which aims at revisiting the original studies of Lie and Cartan on pseudogroups and geometric structures from a modern perspective. We encode geometric structures induced by transitive Lie pseudogroups into principal $G$-bundles equipped with a transversally parallelisable foliation generated by a subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$, called Cartan bundles. Our approach is complementary to arXiv:1911.13147 and is based on Morita equivalence of Lie groupoids. After identifying the main examples and properties, we develop a notion of flatness with respect…
Earlier we introduced and studied the concept of holomorphic {\it branched Cartan geometry}. We define here a foliated version of this notion; this is done in terms of Atiyah bundle. We show that any complex compact manifold of algebraic dimension $d$ admits, away from a closed analytic subset of positive codimension, a nonsingular holomorphic foliation of complex codimension $d$ endowed with a transversely flat branched complex projective geometry (equivalently, a ${\mathbb C}P^d$-geometry). We also prove that transversely branched holomorphic Cartan geometries on compact complex projective r…
Contact path geometries are curved geometric structures on a contact manifold comprising smooth families of paths modeled on the family of all isotropic lines in the projectivization of a symplectic vector space. Locally such a structure is equivalent to the graphs in the space of independent and depedent variables of the family of solutions of a system of an odd number of second order ODE's subject to a single maximally non-integrable constraint. A subclass of contact path geometries is distinguished by the vanishing of an invariant contact torsion. For this subclass the equivalence problem i…
Each sub-Riemannian geometry with bracket generating distribution enjoys a background structure determined by the distribution itself. At the same time, those geometries with constant sub-Riemannian symbols determine a unique Cartan connection leading to their principal invariants. We provide cohomological description of the structure of these curvature invariants in the cases where the background structure is one of the parabolic geometries. As an illustration, constant curvature models are discussed for certain sub-Riemannian geometries.
Some of the well known Fefferman like constructions of parabolic geometries end up with a new structure on the same manifold. In this paper, we classify all such cases with the help of the classical Onishchik's lists \cite{onish1} and we treat in detail the only new series of inclusions providing the spinorial structures on the manifolds with generic free distributions. Our technique relies on the cohomological understanding of the canonical normal Cartan connections for parabolic geometries and the classical computations with exterior forms. Apart of the complete discussion of the distributio…
This note aims to demonstrate that every parabolic geometry has a naturally defined per-Courant algebroïd structure. This structure is a Courant algebroïd if and only if the the curvature $κ$ of the Cartan connection vanishes. In all other cases, if the parabolic geometry is regular, there does not exist a natural universal expression for a Courant bracket.
