Contact path geometries are curved geometric structures on a contact manifold comprising smooth families of paths modeled on the family of all isotropic lines in the projectivization of a symplectic vector space. Locally such a structure is equivalent to the graphs in the space of independent and depedent variables of the family of solutions of a system of an odd number of second order ODE's subject to a single maximally non-integrable constraint. A subclass of contact path geometries is distinguished by the vanishing of an invariant contact torsion. For this subclass the equivalence problem is solved by constructing a normalized Cartan connection using the methods of Tanaka-Morimoto-Čap-Schichl. The geometric meaning of the contact torsion is described. If a secondary contact torsion vanishes then the locally defined space of contact paths admits a split quaternionic contact structure (analogous to the quaternionic contact structures studied by O. Biquard).
We exploit the Cartan-Kähler theory to prove the local existence of real analytic quaternionic contact structures for any prescribed values of the respective curvature functions and their covariant derivatives at a given point on a manifold. We show that, in a certain sense, the different real analytic quaternionic contact geometries in $4n+3$ dimensions depend, modulo diffeomorphisms, on $2n+2$ real analytic functions of $2n+3$ variables.
There are two well-known parabolic split $G_2$-geometries in dimension five, $(2,3,5)$-distributions and $G_2$-contact structures. Here we link these two geometries with yet another $G_2$-related contact structure, which lives on a seven-manifold. We present a natural geometric construction of a Lie contact structure on a seven-dimensional bundle over a five-manifold endowed with a $(2,3,5)$-distribution. For a class of distributions the induced Lie contact structure is constructed explicitly and we determine its symmetries. We further study the relation between the canonical normal Cartan con…
We address the problem of local geometry of third order ODEs modulo contact, point and fibre-preserving transformations of variables. Several new and already known geometries are described in a uniform manner by the Cartan method of equivalence. This includes conformal, Weyl and metric geometries in three and six dimensions and contact projective geometry in dimension three. Respective connections for these geometries are given and their curvatures are expressed by contact, point or fibre-preserving relative invariants of the ODEs.
We give a classification of $1^{st}$ order invariant differential operators acting between sections of certain bundles associated to Cartan geometries of the so called metaplectic contact projective type. These bundles are associated via representations, which are derived from the so called higher symplectic, harmonic or generalized Kostant spinor modules. Higher symplectic spinor modules are arising from the Segal-Shale-Weil representation of the metaplectic group by tensoring it by finite dimensional modules. We show that for all pairs of the considered bundles, there is at most one $1^{st}$…
First we introduce a generalization of symmetric spaces to parabolic geometries. We provide construction of such parabolic geometries starting with classical symmetric spaces and we show that all regular parabolic geometries with smooth systems of involutive symmetries can be obtained this way. Further, we investigate the case of parabolic contact geometries in great detail and we provide the full classification of those with semisimple groups of symmetries without complex factors. Finally, we explicitly construct all non-trivial contact geometries with non-complex simple groups of symmetries.…

We consider local geometry of sub-pseudo-Riemannian structures on contact manifolds. We construct fundamental invariants of the structures and show that the structures give rise to Einstein-Weyl geometries in dimension 3, provided that certain additional conditions are satisfied.
We report on some aspects and recent progress in certain problems in the sub-Riemannian CR and quaternionic contact (QC) geometries. The focus are the corresponding Yamabe problems on the round spheres, the Lichnerowicz-Obata first eigenvalue estimates, and the relation between these two problems. A motivation from the Riemannian case highlights new and old ideas which are then developed in the settings of Iwasawa sub-Riemannian geometries.
The chains studied in this paper generalize Chern-Moser chains for CR structures. They form a distinguished family of one dimensional submanifolds in manifolds endowed with a parabolic contact structure. Both the parabolic contact structure and the system of chains can be equivalently encoded as Cartan geometries (of different types). The aim of this paper is to study the relation between these two Cartan geometries for Lagrangean contact structures and partially integrable almost CR structures. We develop a general method for extending Cartan geometries which generalizes the Cartan geometry i…

We use classical (Penrose) two-component spinors to set up the differential geometry of two parabolic contact structures in five dimensions, namely $G_2$ contact geometry and Legendrean contact geometry. The key players in these two geometries are invariantly defined directional derivatives defined only in the contact directions. We explain how to define them and their usage in constructing basic invariants such as the harmonic curvature, the obstruction to being locally flat from the parabolic viewpoint. As an application, we calculate the invariant torsion of the $G_2$ contact structure on t…
We derive the equations of chains for path geometries on surfaces by solving the equivalence problem of a related structure: sub-Riemannian geometry of signature $(1,1)$ on a contact 3-manifold. This approach is significantly simpler than the standard method of solving the full equivalence problem for path geometry. We then use these equations to give a characterization of projective path geometries in terms of their chains (the chains projected to the surface coincide with the paths) and study the chains of four examples of homogeneous path geometries. In one of these examples (horocycles in …
We introduce and discuss (local) symmetries of geometric structures. These symmetries generalize the classical (locally) symmetric spaces to various other geometries. Our main tools are homogeneous Cartan geometries and their explicit description. This allows us to describe the structure of symmetric geometric structures and to provide a general construction of such structures. Since we can view the classical (locally) symmetric spaces as special case, this allows us to classify various geometric structures on semisimple symmetric spaces. Then we investigate the case of symmetric parabolic geo…
A contact projective structure is a contact path geometry the paths of which are among the geodesics of some affine connection. In the manner of T.Y. Thomas there is associated to each contact projective structure an ambient affine connection on a symplectic manifold with one-dimensional fibers over the contact manifold and using this the local equivalence problem for contact projective structures is solved by the construction of a canonical regular Cartan connection. This Cartan connection is normal if and only if an invariant contact torsion vanishes. Every contact projective structure deter…
We construct a dynamical quantization for contact manifolds in terms of a flat connection acting on a Hilbert tractor bundle. We show that this contact quantization, which is independent of the choice of contact form, can be obtained by quantizing the Reeb dynamics of an ambient strict contact manifold equivariantly with respect to an R+-action. The contact quantization further determines a certain contact tractor connection whose parallel sections determine a distinguished choice of Reeb dynamics and their quantization. This relationship relies on tractor constructions from parabolic geometri…
Contact projective structures have been profoundly studied by D.J.F. Fox. He associated to a contact projective structure a canonical projective structure on the same manifold. We interpret Fox' construction in terms of the equivalent parabolic (Cartan) geometries, showing that it is an analog of Fefferman's construction of a conformal structure associated to a CR structure. We show that, on the level of Cartan connections, this Fefferman--type construction is compatible with normality if and only if the initial structure has vanishing contact torsion. This leads to a geometric description of …
An almost complex structure J on a 4-manifold X may be described in terms of a rank 2 vector bundle E. A splitting of J consists of a pair of line bundles spanning E. A hypersurface M in X satisfying a nondegeneracy condition inherits a CR-structure from J and a path geometry from the splitting. Using the Cartan-Kähler theorem we show that locally every real analytic path geometry is induced by an embedding into C^2 equipped with the splitting generated by the real and imaginary part of the standard holomorphic volume form. As a corollary we obtain the well-known fact that every 3-dimensional …
Lie contact structures generalize the classical Lie sphere geometry of oriented hyperspheres in the standard sphere. They can be equivalently described as parabolic geometries corresponding to the contact grading of orthogonal real Lie algebra. It follows the underlying geometric structure can be interpreted in several equivalent ways. In particular, we show this is given by a split-quaternionic structure on the contact distribution, which is compatible with the Levi bracket. In this vein, we study the geometry of chains, a distinguished family of curves appearing in any parabolic contact geom…
Given a projective structure on a three-dimensional manifold, we find explicit obstructions to the local existence of a Levi-Civita connection in the projective class. These obstructions are given by projectively invariant tensors algebraically constructed from the projective Weyl curvature. We show, by examples, that their vanishing is necessary but not sufficient for local metrisability.
We discuss contact invariant structures on the space of solutions of a third-order ordinary differential equation. Associated to any third-order differential equation modulo contact transformations, Chern introduced a degenerate conformal Lorentzian metric on the space of 2-jets of functions of one variable. When the Wuenschmann invariant vanishes, the degenerate metric descends to a proper conformal Lorentzian metric on the space of solutions. In the general case, when the Wuenschmann invariant is not zero, we define the notion of a causal geometry, and show that the space of solutions suppor…
We show that infinitesimal automorphisms and infinitesimal deformations of parabolic geometries can be nicely described in terms of the twisted de-Rham sequence associated to a certain linear connection on the adjoint tractor bundle. For regular normal geometries, this description can be related to the underlying geometric structure using the machinery of BGG sequences. In the locally flat case, this leads to a deformation complex, which generalizes the is well know complex for locally conformally flat manifolds. Recently, a theory of subcomplexes in BGG sequences has been developed. This appl…
Recently, the behavior of different epidemic models and their relation both to different types of geometries and to some biological models has been revisited . Path equations representing the behavior of epidemic models and their corresponding deviation vectors are examined. A comparison between paths and their deviation vectors in Riemannian and Finslerian Geometries is presented.
