In this work we continue the systematic study of observable effects emerging from modified dispersion relations. We study the motion of test particles subject to a general first order modification of the general relativistic dispersion relation as well as subject to the $κ$-Poincaré dispersion relation in spherical symmetry. We derive the corrections to the photon sphere, the black hole shadow, the Shapiro delay and the light deflection and identify the additional dependence of these observables on the photons' four momentum, which leads to measurable effects that can be compared to experimental data. The results presented here can be interpreted in two ways, depending on the origin of the modified dispersion relation: on the one hand as prediction for traces of quantum gravity, when the modified dispersion relation is induced by phenomenological approaches to quantum gravity, on the other hand as predictions of observables due to the presence of a medium, like a plasma, which modifies the dispersion relation of light on curved spacetimes.
Finding spherically symmetric exact solutions in modified gravity is usually a difficult task. In this paper we use the Noether's symmetry approach for a modified Teleparallel theory of gravity labelled as $f(T,B)$ gravity where $T$ is the scalar torsion and $B$ the boundary term. Using the Noether's theorem, we were able to find exact spherically symmetric solutions for different forms of the function $f(T,B)$ coming from the Noether's symmetries.
In this work, gravitational collapse of a spherical cloud, consists of both dark matter and dark energy in the form of modified Chaplygin gas is studied. It is found that dark energy alone in the form of modified Chaplygin gas forms black hole. Also when both components of the fluid are present then the collapse favors the formation of black hole in cases the dark energy dominates over dark matter. The conclusion is totally opposite to the usually known results.
It is broadly known that Lie point symmetries and their subcase, Noether symmetries, can be used as a geometric criterion to select alternative theories of gravity. Here, we use Noether symmetries as a selection criterion to distinguish those models of $f(R,G)$ theory, with $R$ and $G$ being the Ricci and the Gauss-Bonnet scalars respectively, that are invariant under point transformations in a spherically symmetric background. In total, we find ten different forms of $f$ that present symmetries and calculate their invariant quantities, i.e Noether vector fields. Furthermore, we use these Noet…
Static, spherically symmetric solutions representing stars made of barotropic perfect fluid are studied in the context of two theories of type-II minimally modified gravity, VCDM and VCCDM. Both of these theories share the property that no additional degree of freedom is introduced in the gravity sector, and propagate only two gravitational waves besides matter fields, as in General Relativity (GR). We find that, on imposing physical boundary conditions on the Misner-Sharp mass of the system, the solutions in V(C)CDM exactly coincide with the ones in GR, namely they also satisfy the Tolman-Opp…
In this paper we investigate spherically symmetric vacuum solutions of $f(R)$ gravity in a higher dimensional spacetime. With this objective we construct a system of non-linear differential equations, whose solutions depend on the explicit form assumed for the function $F(R)=\frac{df(R)}{dR}$. We explicit show that for specific classes of this function exact solutions from the field equations are obtained; also we find approximated results for the metric tensor for more general cases admitting $F(R)$ close to the unity.
We discuss spherically symmetric black holes in the modified self-dual theory of gravity recently studied by Krasnov, obtained adding a Weyl-curvature dependent `cosmological term' to the Plebanski lagrangian for general relativity. This type of modified gravity admits two different types of singularities: one is a true singularity for the theory where the fundamental fields of the theory, as well as the (auxiliary) spacetime metric, become singular, and the other one is a milder "non-metric singularity" where the metric description of the spacetime breaks down but the fundamental fields thems…
We consider perturbations of a static and spherically symmetric background endowed with a metric tensor and a scalar field in the framework of the effective field theory of modified gravity. We employ the previously developed 2+1+1 canonical formalism of a double Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) decomposition of space-time, which singles out both time and radial directions. Our building block is a general gravitational action that depends on scalar quantities constructed from the 2+1+1 canonical variables and the lapse. Variation of the action up to first-order in perturbations gives rise to three …
In recent years, a number of alternative theories of gravity have been proposed as possible resolutions of certain cosmological problems or as toy models for possible but heretofore unobserved effects. However, the implications of such theories for the stability of structures such as stars have not been fully investigated. We use our "generalized variational principle", described in a previous work, to analyze the stability of static spherically symmetric solutions to spherically symmetric perturbations in three such alternative theories: Carroll et al.'s f(R) gravity, Jacobson & Mattingly's "…
We investigate the existence of analytic solutions for the field equations in the Einstein-æther theory for a static spherically symmetric spacetime and provide a detailed dynamical system analysis of the field equations. In particular, we investigate if the gravitational field equations in the Einstein-æther model in the static spherically symmetric spacetime possesses the Painlevè property, so that an analytic explicit integration can be performed. We find that analytic solutions can be presented in terms of Laurent expansion only when the matter source consists of a perfect fluid with linea…
In \cite{Bahamonde:2019zea}, a spherically symmetric black hole (BH) was derived from the quadratic form of $f(T)$. Here we derive the associated energy, invariants of curvature, and torsion of this BH and demonstrate that the higher-order contribution of torsion renders the singularity weaker compared with the Schwarzschild BH of general relativity (GR). Moreover, we calculate the thermodynamic quantities and reveal the effect of the higher--order contribution on these quantities. Therefore, we derive a new spherically symmetric BH from the cubic form of $f(T)=T+ε\Big[\frac{1}{2}αT^2+\frac{1}…
In this paper we argue that modified Friedmann equations with a bounce solution can be derived from a modified dispersion relation by employing a thermodynamical description of general relativity on the apparent horizon.
Spherically symmetric solutions in F(R) theories in astronomical systems with rising energy density are studied. The range of parameters is established for which the flat space-time approximation for the background metric is valid. For the solutions in which the curvature scalar oscillates with large amplitude and high frequency, found in our previous papers, it is shown that the analysis of the Jeans instability is strongly modified. It is discovered that for large astronomical objects modified gravity can be repulsive, so such objects shrink forming relatively thin shells instead of quasi un…
In this paper, we study the effects of Generalized Uncertainty Principle(GUP) and Modified Dispersion Relations(MDRs) on the thermodynamics of ultra-relativistic particles in early universe. We show that limitations imposed by GUP and particle horizon on the measurement processes, lead to certain modifications of early universe thermodynamics.
We investigate the hypothetical process of gravitational Cherenkov radiation, which may occur in modified gravity theories. We obtain a useful constraint on a modified dispersion relation for propagating modes of gravitational waves, which could be predicted as a consequence of violation of the Lorentz invariance in modified theories of gravity. The constraint from gravitational Cherenkov radiation and that from direct measurements of the gravitational waves emitted by a compact binary system are complementary to each other.
The existence of black holes is one of the key predictions of general relativity (GR) and therefore a basic consistency test for modified theories of gravity. In the case of spherical symmetry in GR the existence of an apparent horizon and its regularity is consistent with only two distinct classes of physical black holes. Here we derive constraints that any self-consistent modified theory of gravity must satisfy to be compatible with their existence. We analyze their properties and illustrate characteristic features using the Starobinsky model. Both of the GR solutions can be regarded as zero…
We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm for the analysis of constraints to gauge theories defined on spherically symmetric black hole backgrounds. We find that the constraints for a given theory are modified on such spacetimes through the presence of additional contributions from the horizon. As a concrete example, we consider the Maxwell field on a black hole background, and determine the role of the horizon contributions on the dynamics of the theory.
Spherically symmetric dark energy structures are investigated in the framework of a generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG), which has an equation of state of the form $P = - A/ρ^α} $. We also study these in a modified GCG equation of state, which includes a matter term, i.e. $P = σ^{2} ρ- A/ρ^α$. The results of the latter are then compared with some observational data on low-surface-brightness galaxies which are supposed to be dominated by dark matter.
Modified gravity theories generically predict a violation of Lorentz invariance, which may lead to a modified dispersion relation for propagating modes of gravitational waves. We construct a parametrized dispersion relation that can reproduce a range of known Lorentz-violating predictions and investigate their impact on the propagation of gravitational waves. A modified dispersion relation forces different wavelengths of the gravitational wave train to travel at slightly different velocities, leading to a modified phase evolution observed at a gravitational-wave detector. We show how such corr…
Considering corrections produced by modified dispersion relations on the equation of state parameter of radiation, we study the induced black hole metric inspired by Kiselev's ansatz, thus defining a deformed Reissner-Nordström metric. In particular, we consider thermodynamic properties of such a black hole from the combined viewpoints of the modified equation of state parameter and the phenomenological approach to the quantum gravity problem called rainbow gravity.
In this paper we investigate the impact of modified dispersion relations (MDR) on (Anti)de Sitter-Schwarzschild black holes. In this context we find the temperature of black holes can be derived with important corrections. In particular given a specific MDR the temperature has a maximal value such that it can prevent black holes from total evaporation. The entropy of the (A)dS black holes is also obtained with a logarithmic correction.
The modified dispersion relation as a common feature of all quantum gravity scenarios provides a perturbation framework upon which the black hole thermodynamics can be corrected. In this letter, we obtain the corrections to the $d$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole thermodynamics by utilizing the extra dimensional form of the modified dispersion relation, leading to the modification of the Cardy-Verlinde formula. Furthermore, we show that the modified dispersion relation corrections to the Cardy-Verlinde formula can be taken into account by redefining the Virasoro operator and the central c…
Black hole entropy calculations which are based on counting of microstates and based on modified dispersion relations in the framework of loop quantum gravity are considered. We suggest that the inconsistency of two approaches can be explained by different ways. This inconsistency can affect the definition and constancy of the Immirzi parameter or order of the modification constants of dispersion relations. Possible results of these effects are discussed.
The Lagrangian derivation of the Equations of Motion for topological static spherically symmetric metrics in $\mathcal F (R,G)$-modified gravity is presented and the related solutions are discussed. In particular, a new topological solution for the model $\mathcal F (R,G)=R+\sqrt{G}$ is found. The black hole solutions and the First Law of thermodynamic are analyzed. Furthermore, the coupling with electromagnetic field is also considered and a Maxwell solution is derived.

We generalize the adiabatic renormalization to theories with dispersion relations modified at energies higher than a new scale $M_C$. We obtain explicit expressions for the mean value of the stress tensor in the adiabatic vacuum, up to the second adiabatic order. We show that for any dispersion relation the divergences can be absorbed into the bare gravitational constants of the theory. We also point out that, depending on the renormalization prescription, the renormalized stress tensor may contain finite trans-Planckian corrections even in the limit $M_C\to\infty$.
Deviation from standard dispersion relations for electrons and photons in the form of an extra term proportional to an arbitrarily high power of momentum is studied. It is shown that observational constraints lead to a region in the parametric space that is similar in shape to the region obtained earlier in a theory in which the extra term was proportional to third power of momentum.
Different versions of consistent canonical realizations of hypersurface deformations of spherically symmetric space-times have been derived in models of loop quantum gravity, modifying the classical dynamics and sometimes also the structure of space-time. Based on a canonical version of effective field theory, this paper provides a unified treatment, showing that modified space-time structures are generic in this setting. The special case of Euclidean gravity demonstrates agreement also with existing operator calculations.
Recent observations of anomalous line-of-sight velocity dispersions of two ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) provide a stringent test for modified gravity theories. While NGC 1052-DF2 exhibits an extremely low dispersion value ($σ\sim 7.8_{-2.2}^{+5.6}$ km/s), the reported dispersion value for NGC 1052-DF44 is quite high ($σ\sim 41.0 \pm 8$ km/s). For DF2, the dynamical mass is almost equal to the luminous mass suggesting the galaxy have little to no `dark matter' in $Λ$CDM whereas DF4 requires a dynamical mass-to-light ratio of $\sim 30$ making it to be almost entirely consists of dark matter. It…
We develop a technique to construct analytical solutions of the linear perturbations of inflation with a nonlinear dispersion relation, due to quantum effects of the early universe. Error bounds are given and studied in detail. The analytical solutions describe the exact evolution of the perturbations extremely well even when only the first-order approximations is used.
In this paper, employing the modified dispersion relation, we have derived the general modified Friedmann equations and the corresponding modified entropy relations for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) Universe. In this setup, we find that when the big bounce happens, its energy scale and its corresponding modified entropy behavior are sensitive to the value of $k$. In contrast to the previous work with $k=0$, our work mainly demonstrates that the bouncing behavior for the closed Universe with $k=1$ appears at the normal energy limit of the modified dispersion relation introduced, and when…
Observables which would indicate a modified vacuum dispersion relations, possibly caused by quantum gravity effects, are a four momentum dependence of the cosmological redshift and the existence of a so called lateshift effect for massless or very light particles. Existence or non-existence of the later is currently analyzed on the basis of the available observational data from gamma ray bursts and compared to predictions of specific modified dispersion relation models. We consider the most general perturbation of the general relativistic dispersion relation of freely falling particles on homo…
Globular clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way have characteristic velocity dispersions that are consistent with the predictions of Newtonian gravity, and may be at odds with Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). We discuss a modified gravity (MOG) theory that successfully predicts galaxy rotation curves, galaxy cluster masses and velocity dispersions, lensing, and cosmological observations, yet produces predictions consistent with Newtonian theory for smaller systems, such as GCs. MOG produces velocity dispersion predictions for GCs that are independent of the distance from the galactic center, which…
In this paper, we evaluated the quasinormal modes of electromagnetic perturbation in a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by the static spherically symmetric quintessence by using the third-order WKB approximation when the quintessential state parameter $ w_{q}$ in the range of $-1/3<w_{q}<0$. Due to the presence of quintessence, Maxwell field damps more slowly. And when at $-1<w_{q}<-1/3$, it is similar to the black hole solution in the ds/Ads spacetime. The appropriate boundary conditions need to be modified.
In this manuscript, we investigate the effects of a modified dispersion relation on the thermodynamics of Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by the quintessence matter. We find that the MDR-correction states the same lower bound on the horizon, while the quintessence matter specifies the upper bound to the horizon depending on the state parameter. Due to MDR-correction and quintessence matter presence, we observe modifications in equation of state and specific heat functions of black hole. We show that a remnant can occur according to quintessence matter, and the black hole's stability depend…
The tunneling behavior of fermions with half-integral spin from a higher dimensional charged anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole in de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity is investigated via a modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The results demonstrate that the modified thermodynamic quantities not only are related to the properties of the higher dimensional charged AdS black hole in dRGT massive gravity but also depend on the parameter $β$, the coupling constant $σ$ and the mass of emitted particles $m$. In addition, the modified Hawking temperature is higher than the original temper…
Planck scale inspired theories which are also often accompanied with maximum energy and/or momentum scale predict deformed dispersion relations compared to ordinary special relativity and quantum mechanics. In this paper we resort to the methods of statistical mechanics in order to determine the effects of a deformed dispersion relation along with upper bound in partition function as maximum energy and/or momentum scale can have on the thermodynamics of photon gas. We have analyzed two distinct quantum gravity models in this paper
In this paper, analytical solutions describing static and spherically symmetric sources in the decoupling limit of massive gravity are derived. We analyze the model parameter range and specify when a Vainshtein mechanism is possible. Furthermore, we use gravitational lensing and velocity dispersion data from galaxies to put constraints on the mass scale of the graviton. The result for the inverse graviton mass scale lambda_g = h/(2pi)/(c m_g), in units of the Hubble radius r_H=c/H_0, is of the order lambda_g/r_H > 0.01-0.02 at 95% confidence level.
We consider the problem of calculating the Green's functions associated to a massive scalar field with modified dispersion relations. We analyze the case when dispersion is modified by higher derivative spatial operators acting on the field orthogonally to a preferred direction, determined by a unit time-like vector field. By assuming that the integral curves of the vector field are geodesics, we expand the modified Klein-Gordon equation in Fermi normal coordinates. By means of a Fourier transform, we find a series representation in momentum-space of the Green's functions. The coefficients of …
Planck scale modified dispersion relations are one way how to capture the influence of quantum gravity on the propagation of fundamental point particles effectively. We derive the time dilation between an observer's or particle's proper time, given by a Finslerian length measure induced from a modified dispersion relation, and a reference laboratory time. To do so, the Finsler length measure for general first order perturbations of the general relativistic dispersion relation is constructed explicitly. From this we then derive the time dilation formula for the $κ$-Poincaré dispersion relation …
A modified formulation of energy-momentum relation is proposed in the context of doubly special relativity. We investigate its impact on black hole physics. It turns out that such modification will give corrections to both the temperature and the entropy of black holes. In particular this modified dispersion relation also changes the picture of Hawking radiation greatly when the size of black holes approaching the Planck scale. It can prevent black holes from total evaporation, as a result providing a plausible mechanism to treat the remnant of black holes as a candidate for dark matter.
The Hamiltonian formulation of modified dispersion relations (MDRs) allows for their implementation on generic curved spacetimes. In turn it is possible to derive phenomenological effects. I will present how to construct the kappa-Poincare dispersion relation on curved spacetimes, its spherically symmetric realizations, among them the kappa deformation of Schwarzschild spacetime, and its implementation on Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes with arbitrary scale factor. In addition we will construct the general first order modifications of the general relativistic dispersion relation…
The entropy of the Reissner-Nördstrom black hole is studied within the context of a brane-world scenario. Such a black hole is a solution of the Einstein field equations on the brane, possessing a tidal charge which is a reflection of the extra dimension. We use the modified dispersion relation to obtain the entropy of such brane-world black holes. The resulting entropy differs from that of the standard Bekenstein-Hawking's and contains information on the extra dimension.
Quantum Field Theory is plagued by divergences in the attempt to calculate physical quantities. Standard techniques of regularization and renormalization are used to keep under control such a problem. In this paper we would like to use a different scheme based on Modified Dispersion Relations (MDR) to remove infinities appearing in one loop approximation in contrast to what happens in conventional approaches. In particular, we apply the MDR regularization to the computation of the entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole from one side and the Zero Point Energy (ZPE) of the graviton from the other…
Rainbow metrics are a widely used approach to metric formalism for theories with Modified Dispersion Relations. They have had a huge success in the Quantum Gravity Phenomenology literature, since they allow to introduce momentum-dependent spacetime metrics into the description of systems with Modified Dispersion Relation. In this paper, we introduce the reader to some realizations of this general idea: the original Rainbow metrics proposal, the momentum-space-inspired metric, the standard Finsler geometry approach and our alternative definition of a four-velocity-dependent metric with a massle…
We study the thermodynamics of a moving Schwarzschild black hole, identifying the temperature and entropy in a relativistic scenario. Furthermore, we set arguments in a framework relating invariant geometrical quantities under global spacetime transformations and the dispersion relation of the system. We then extended these arguments in order to consider more general dispersion relations, and identify criteria to rule them out.
