In this article, we are concerned with the Langlands functoriality conjecture. Cogdell, Kim, Piatetski-Shapiro and Shahidi proved functioriality conjecture in the case of a globally generic cuspidal automorphic representation for the split classical groups, unitary groups or even quasi-split special orthogonal groups in characteristic zero. Lomelí extends this result to split classical groups and unitary groups in positive characteristic. Thus, in this article we prove the Langlands functoriality conjecture for the even quasi-split non-split special orthogonal groups in positive characteristic i.e. we lift globally generic cuspidal automorphic representations of quasi-split non-split even special orthogonal groups to generic automorphic representations of suitable general linear groups in positive characteristic. As an application of this result, we prove the compatibility of the local gamma factors and the unramified Ramanujan conjecture.
We formalise a notion of $p$-adic Langlands functoriality for the definite unitary group. This extends the classical notion of Langlands functoriality to the setting of eigenvarieties. We apply some results of Chenevier to obtain some cases of $p$-adic Langlands functoriality by interpolating known cases of classical Langlands functoriality.
Functoriality conjecture is one of the central subjects of the present-day mathematics. Functoriality is the profound problem formulated by Robert Langlands in the late 1960s in order to establish nonabelian class field theory. In this expository paper, we describe the Langlands-Shahidi method, the local and global Langlands conjectures and the converse theorems which are powerful tools for the establishment of functoriality of some important cases, and survey the interesting results related to functoriality conjecture.
Using the overconvergent cohomology modules introduced by Ash and Stevens, we construct eigenvarieties associated with reductive groups and establish some basic geometric properties of these spaces, building on work of Ash-Stevens, Urban, and others. We also formulate a precise modularity conjecture linking trianguline Galois representations with overconvergent cohomology classes. In the course of giving evidence for this conjecture, we establish several new instances of \emph{p-}adic Langlands functoriality. Our main technical innovations are a family of universal coefficients spectral sequen…
We study the basic geometry of a class of analytic adic spaces that arise in the study of the extended (or adic) eigenvarieties constructed by Andreatta--Iovita--Pilloni, Gulotta and the authors. We apply this to prove a general interpolation theorem for Langlands functoriality, which works for extended eigenvarieties and improves upon existing results in characteristic 0. As an application, we show that the characteristic p locus of the extended eigenvariety for GL(2)/F, where F is a cyclic extension of the rational numbers Q, contains non-ordinary components of dimension at least [F:Q].
This is a survey lecture note on the applications of Langlands functoriality which were obtained recently by some people at the Langalnds school. This lecture was delivered at the Department of Mathematics, Kyoto University, Japan on June 30 (Tuesday), 2009.
This is a report on the global aspects of the Langlands-Shahidi method which in conjunction with converse theorems of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro has recently been instrumental in establishing a significant number of new and surprising cases of Langlands Functoriality Conjecture over number fields. They have led to striking new estimates towards Ramanujan and Selberg conjectures.
We generalize a beautiful method of Blasius and Ramakrishnan, that in order to exhibit particular instances of the Langlands functorial correspondence, it is enough to show that the correspondence holds in the semistable case, provided the arithmetic data we are considering is closed with respect to cyclic base change and descent.
We prove p-adic functoriality for inner forms of unitary groups in three variables by establishing the existence of morphisms between eigenvarieties that extend the classical Langlands functoriality.
Langlands' functoriality principle predicts deep relations between the local and automorphic spectra of different reductive groups. This has been generalized by the relative Langlands program to include spherical varieties, among which reductive groups are special cases. In the philosophy of Langlands' "beyond endoscopy" program, these relations should be expressed as comparisons between different trace formulas, with the insertion of appropriate $L$-functions. The insertion of $L$-functions calls for one more goal to be achieved: the study of their functional equations via trace formulas. The…
We study some tempered endoscopic cases of Langlands functoriality on the $n$-variable unitary groups via the simple stable trace formula. This extends previous work of Rogawski and Clozel-Harris-Labesse. Ramakrishnan and Kim-Shahidi have proved the existence of the automorphic tensor product for $GL_2 \times GL_2$ and $GL_2 \times GL_3$. We apply our endoscopic results to, in a sense, "lift" these theorems and deduce the existence of the automorphic tensor product for the quasi-split unitary groups $U^*_2 \times U^*_2$ and $U^*_2 \times U^*_3$. We then formulate the notion of overconvergent L…
By the theory of Colmez and Fontaine, a de Rham representation of the Galois group of a local field roughly corresponds to a representation of the Weil-Deligne group equipped with an admissible filtration on the underlying vector space. Using a modification of the classical local Langlands correspondence, we associate with any pair consisting of a Weil-Deligne group representation and a type of a filtration (admissible or not) a specific locally algebraic representation of a general linear group. We advertise the conjecture that this pair comes from a de Rham representation if and only if the …

We establish the Langlands-Shahidi method over a global field of characteristic p. We then focus on the unitary groups and prove global and local Langlands functoriality to general linear groups for generic representations. Main applications are to the Ramanujan Conjecture and Riemann Hypothesis.
There has been a recent coming together of the Converse Theorem for $\gln$ and the Langlands-Shahidi method of controlling the analytic properties of automorphic $L$-functions which has allowed us to establish a number of new cases of functoriality, or the lifting of automorphic forms. In this article we would like to present the current state of the Converse Theorem and outline the method one uses to apply the Converse Theorem to obtain liftings. We will then turn to an exposition of the new liftings and some of their applications.
By making use of Langlands functoriality between GSp(4) and GL(4), we show that the images of the Galois representations attached to "genuine" globally generic automorphic representations of GSp(4) are "large" for almost every prime. Moreover, by using the notion of (n,p)-groups (introduced by Khare, Larsen and Savin) and generic Langlands functoriality from SO(5) to GL(4) we construct automorphic representations of GSp(4) such that the compatible system attached to them has large image for all primes.
We study the behaviour of automorphic L-Invariants associated to cuspidal representations of GL(2) of cohomological weight 0 under abelian base change and Jacquet-Langlands lifts to totally definite quaternion algebras. Under a standard non-vanishing hypothesis on automorphic L-functions and some technical restrictions on the automorphic representation and the base field we get a simple proof of the equality of automorphic and arithmetic L-invariants. This together with Spiess' results on p-adic L-functions yields a new proof of the exceptional zero conjecture for modular elliptic curves - at …
We discuss generalizations of the Langlands program, from reductive groups to the local and automorphic spectra of spherical varieties, and to more general representations arising as "quantizations" of suitable Hamiltonian spaces. To a spherical $G$-variety $X$, one associates a dual group ${^LG_X}$ and an $L$-value (encoded in a representation of ${^LG_X}$), which conjecturally describe the local and automorphic spectra of the variety. This sets up a problem of functoriality, for any morphism ${^LG_X}\to {^LG_Y}$ of dual groups. We review, and generalize, Langlands' "beyond endoscopy" approac…
Let $ρ_1$ and $ρ_2$ be a pair of residual, odd, absolutely irreducible two-dimensional Galois representations of a totally real number field $F$. In this article we propose a conjecture asserting existence of "safe" chains of compatible systems of Galois representations linking $ρ_1$ to $ρ_2$. Such conjecture implies the generalized Serre's conjecture and is equivalent to Serre's conjecture under a modular version of it. We prove a weak version of the modular variant using the connectedness of certain Hecke algebras, and we comment on possible applications of these results to establish some ca…
This is a semi-expository article concerning Langlands functoriality and Deligne's conjecture on the special values of $L$-functions. The emphasis is on symmetric power $L$-functions associated to a holomorphic cusp form, while appealing to a recent work of Mahnkopf on the special values of automorphic $L$-functions.
The Langlands Program relates Galois representations and automorphic representations of reductive algebraic groups. The trace formula is a powerful tool in the study of this connection and the Langlands Functoriality Conjecture. After giving an introduction to the Langlands Program and its geometric version, which applies to curves over finite fields and over the complex field, I give a survey of my recent joint work with Robert Langlands and Ngo Bao Chau (arXiv:1003.4578 and arXiv:1004.5323) on a new approach to proving the Functoriality Conjecture using the trace formulas, and on the geometr…
We prove three main results: all Langlands-Shahidi automorphic $L$-functions over function fields are rational; after twists by highly ramified characters our automorphic $L$-functions become polynomials; and, if $π$ is a globally generic cuspidal automorphic representation of a split classical group or a unitary group ${\bf G}_n$ and $τ$ a cuspidal (unitary) automorphic representation of a general linear group, then $L(s,π\times τ)$ is holomorphic for $\Re(s) > 1$ and has at most a simple pole at $s=1$. We also prove the holomorphy and non-vanishing of automorphic exterior square, symmetric s…
The object of this work is the spinor L-function of degree 3 and certain degeneration related to the functoriality principle. We study liftings of automorphic forms on the pair of symplectic groups $(\text{GSp}(2),\text{GSp}(4))$ to $\text{GSp}(6)$. We prove cuspidality and demonstrate the compatibility with conjectures of Andrianov, Panchishkin, Deligne and Yoshida. This is done on a motivic and analytic level. We discuss an underlying torus and L-group homomorphism and put our results in the context of the Langlands program.
We present topics in the Langlands Program to graduate students and a wider mathematically mature audience. We study both global and local aspects in characteristic zero as well as characteristic $p$. We look at modern approaches to the generalized Ramanujan conjecture, which is an open problem over number fields, and present known cases over function fields. In particular, we study automorphic $L$-functions via the Langlands-Shahidi method. Hopefully, our approach to the Langlands Program can help guide the interested reader into an exciting field of mathematical research.
We prove that $L$-functions from Langlands-Shahidi method in the case of $GSpin$ groups over a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic zero are Artin $L$-functions through the local Langlands correspondence. It has an application on the proof of a weak version of the generic Arthur packet conjecture. Furthermore, we study and describe a local $L$-packet that contains a generic member in the case of $GSpin$ groups. Using this description of a local $L$-packet, we strengthen a weak version of the generic Arthur packet conjecture in those cases (local version of the generalized Ramanujan co…
Langlands' beyond endoscopy proposal for establishing functoriality motivates interesting and concrete problems in the representation theory of algebraic groups. We study these problems in a setting related to the Langlands $L$-functions $L(s,π,\,\otimes^3),$ where $π$ is a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A}_F)$ where $F$ is a global field.
Let H be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and let G be an abstract group. In this note we show that every homomorphism from the Grothendieck semiring of H to that of G which maps irreducible representations to irreducibles, comes from a group homomorphism from G to H. We also connect this result with the Langlands conjectures.
Motivated by the Langlands' beyond endoscopy proposal for establishing functoriality, we study the representation $\otimes^3$ in a setting related to the Langlands $L$-functions $L(s,π,\,\otimes^3),$ where $π$ is a cuspidal automorphic representation of $G$ where $G$ is either $\mathrm{SO}(2n+1)$, $\mathrm{Sp}(2n)$ and $\mathrm{SO}(2n)$. In particular, under what conditions on partitions $λ$, we examine whether or not $\otimes^3$ detects the subgroups $\mathbb{S}_{[λ]}(G)$ for $G$ with type $B_n$ and $D_{2n}$ or $\mathbb{S}_{\langleλ\rangle}(G)$ for $G$ with type $C_n$. Here $\mathbb{S}_{[λ]}$…
We prove Langlands functoriality for the generic spectrum of general spin groups (both odd and even). Contrary to other recent instances of functoriality, our resulting automorphic representations on the general linear group will not be self-dual. Together with cases of classical groups, this completes the list of cases of split reductive groups whose L-groups have classical derived groups. The important transfer from GSp(4) to GL(4) follows from our result as a special case.
We show that the local Langlands conjecture for $Sp(2n)$ follows from that for $GSp(2n)$. In particular, we prove the local Langlands conjecture for $Sp(4)$, based on our previous work on the local Langlands conjecture for $GSp(4)$. We also determine the possible sizes of $L$-packets for $Sp(4)$.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean locally compact field. We study a class of Langlands-Shahidi pairs $({\bf H},{\bf L})$, consisting of a quasi-split connected reductive group $\bf H$ over $F$ and a Levi subgroup $\bf L$ which is closely related to a product of restriction of scalars of ${\rm GL}_1$'s or ${\rm GL}_2$'s. We prove the compatibility of the resulting local factors with the Langlands correspondence. In particular, let $E$ be a cubic separable extension of $F$. We consider a simply connected quasi-split semisimple group $\bf H$ over $F$ of type $D_4$, with triality corresponding to $E$, …
We establish Langlands functoriality for the generic spectrum of GSp(4) and describe its transfer on GL(4). We apply this to prove results toward the generalized Ramanujan conjecture for generic representations of GSp(4).
We state an improved version of the conjecture of Langlands and Rapoport, and we prove the conjecture for a large class of Shimura varieties. In particular, we obtain the first proof of the (original) conjecture for Shimura varieties of PEL-type.
In this paper we propose a new way to realize cyclic base change (a special case of Langlands functoriality) for prime degree extensions of characteristic zero local fields. Let $F / E$ be a prime degree $l$ extension of local fields of residue characteristic $p \neq l$. Let $π$ be an irreducible cuspidal $l$-adic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(E)$ and $ρ$ be an irreducible cuspidal $l$-adic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ which is Galois-invariant. Under some minor technical conditions on $π$ and $ρ$ (for instance, we assume that both are level zero) we prove that the $\bmod l$-reducti…
A conference talk discussing the conjecture of Langlands and Rapoport concerning the structure of the points on a Shimura variety modulo a prime of good reduction.
We prove that a strengthened form of the local Langlands conjecture is valid throughout the principal series of any connected split reductive $p$-adic group. The method of proof is to establish the presence of a very simple geometric structure, in both the smooth dual and the Langlands parameters. We prove that this geometric structure is present, in the same way, for the general linear group, including all of its inner forms. With these results as evidence, we give a detailed formulation of a general geometric structure conjecture.
We calculate the asymptotic behavior of the dimension of the fixed vectors of $π$ with respect to compact open subgroups $1+ M_n(\mathfrak{p}^N)\subset\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ for $π$ an admissible representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$, and $F$ a nonarchimedean local field. Such dimensions can be calculated by germs of the character of $π$. We also make some observations on how those dimensions behave under instances of Langlands functoriality, such as the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence and cyclic base change, where relations between characters are known.
We prove that the reduction mod \ell of the local Langlands correspondence between supercuspidal representations of GL_n(F), where F is a finite extension of Q_p, and representations of the Galois group of F is well-defined. The results and methods of this paper have been used by Vigneras to give a proof of the ``local Langlands conjecture mod \ell'', that was proved earlier by her by different methods (local harmonic analysis mod \ell) for \ell>n. Unlike the local methods used earlier by Vigneras, our more global method also generalises well to the characteristic p case.
In this paper, we highlight and state precisely the local Langlands correspondence for quasi-split O_{2n} established by Arthur. We give two applications: Prasad's conjecture and Gross--Prasad conjecture for O_{n}. Also, we discuss the Arthur conjecture for O_{2n}, and establish the Arthur multiplicity formula for O_{2n}.
This paper proves the local Langlands conjecture for the non quasi-split inner form Sp(1,1) of Sp(4) over a p-adic field of characteristic 0, by studying the restriction of representations from the non quasi-split inner form GSp(1,1) of GSp(4) to Sp(1,1). The L-packets for Sp(1,1) are constructed based on the earlier work on the local Langlands correspondence for GSp(1,1) by Gan and Tantono. To parameterize them in terms of so-called S-groups, we establish and utilize the local Langlands correspondence for reductive dual groups which participate in the theta correspondence with Sp(1,1) and GSp…
We prove a descent criterion for certain families of smooth representations of GL_n(F) (F a p-adic field) in terms of the gamma factors of pairs constructed in previous work of the second author. We then use this descent criterion, together with a theory of gamma factors for families of representations of the Weil group W_F (developed previously by both authors), to prove a series of conjectures, due to the first author, that give a complete description of the integral Bernstein center in terms of Galois theory and the local Langlands correspondence. An immediate consequence is the conjectural…
Kottwitz's conjecture describes the contribution of a supercuspidal represention to the cohomology of a local Shimura variety in terms of the local Langlands correspondence. A natural extension of this conjecture concerns Scholze's more general spaces of local shtukas. Using a new Lefschetz-Verdier trace formula for v-stacks, we prove the extended conjecture, disregarding the action of the Weil group, and modulo a virtual representation whose character vanishes on the locus of elliptic elements. As an application, we show that for an irreducible smooth representation of an inner form of $\math…
In this paper, we give a method for characterizing the local Langlands conjectures in the vein of Scholze's alternate proof of the local Langlands conjecture for $\mathrm{GL}_n$. More specifically, we show that if a local Langlands correspondence satisfies a Scholze--Shin equation, as in the paper of Scholze and Shin, in addition to the usual desiderata expected of such a correspondence then these properties uniquely characterize the correspondence.
